  1. Sori, nid 2 opt out this time as I am not free on the morning. I tot this event will be on afternoon/evening leh? No meh?

    Cheers.. Dolly

  2. Dearie

EO Ivan not free in the afternoon mah. EO has the final say hor. Also, we try not to clash with the Pot-luck Picnic so that members can join both events going from one to the other lor.

  3. Hi Charles Wee,
    Thanks for the support.

    Hi Lily,
Thanks again for putting up the post.

    Hi All,

If you cannot make it on 19May. You can join the RECCE RIDE this Saturday (05May2012). The TIMING will be exactly the same as the 19May one.

Only difference is “the stretch from Ponggol PC to Ponggol Point”, I have not ride there yet. Hence, it’s a recce ride. We might discover some thing new there.

But if my memories serve me well, this part of the route, the walkers had been there already…..I think there is a Kampong Type House with a front garden somewhere, plenty of greens etc.

    Cheers!

  4. Hi Ivan,

I wish to join you this Saturday. Next week I have to help my wife make sushi in the morning for afternoon picnic.

  5. Hi Lawrence #6,
Great that you will join. Been a long time since we last meet. Btw, there are some nice fishing spots too at the NE Riverine Loop ….. near the Ponggol PC end and the Pongool Point side. BUT this time, you bring your bicycle and not the fishing rods ya!! Hahahahaa.

    Hi Johnny #7,
OK, you join recce ride also good lah! See you this Saturday then …. and thanks for the support.

  6. Hi Ivan,
Would like to join you in the recce ride as well.
I am staying there. In fact I can see the bicycle rental kiosk from my window.

  7. Have taken the route before.
Propose that we skip Yio Chu Kang Road as the route from Gerald Drive to Yio Chu Kang is dangerous for bicycles.
Instead we will go by Lorong Buangkok & exit by Buangkok Link to Buangkok Green.
Maybe they have improved the route, we will take a look tomorrow.

  8. Hi LawrenceL #10,

For the RECCE RIDE, we wont be going YCK or GD or even Buangkok side.

We will be following the route stated above. The unknown stretch is only along Ponggol PC to Ponggol Point Walk (via Ponggol Waterway). Please refer to route map at above weblink.

For the route via Serangoon PC – Buangkok PC way, we will do this another time – may be in July or August 2012. I think it will be interesting too because I think the construction of the PC in this area oredi completed liao. Would be pleased to be your co-EO if you can EO for this cycling route.

    Cheers & C U 2moro morning.

  9. Hi Ivan Lim / Lily Ho,

Pls. register me for this cycling tour. I MISS the last one also at Punggol. I am happy to hear that it is repeated but in a different area of Punggol.

Heard from Charles Wee that this area is quite scenic with lots of greenery and I am looking forward to this ride and meeting SHCians again. :)

  10. Hi Ivan,

Just want to share my experience on this morning recce. If not for my next Saturday tight schedule, I would like to repeat this morning cycling route. Although the first part is same as last month, the second part returning by the other routes I get to see different scenery. What more enjoyable is that while cycling I also get to chit chat with Ah Nee, Lawrence, Julian and Charles. No rushing and at this leisure pace six of us still reach our destination in less than two hours. I believe those who look forward to next week cycling will not be disappointed.

Cheers to all you nice SHCians. :)

  11. Dear Cyclists

    Please take note : Carparks

The carpark at Ponggol Park itself (limited lots) is no longer free but barrier parking system as verified by the recce group this morning.

  12. Hi StevenC #12,
Glad that you are joining us on 19May (AM).
Read your post on Dog Boarding! GREAT! Way to go! Good Job!

    Johnny #13,
Hey, you are welcome. Btw, do note that Rosalind’s Pot-luck and Picnic event is on 19May (PM)…..not next Saturday. So, don’t go prepare the sushi ONE WEEK too early. Hahaha…….

TQ again Lily, for helping to edit the post on carpark.

  13. This morning the weather was cooling and breezy after an early heavy downpour in the wee hours. After filling our stomach at the Blk 401 Kopitiam, We, Ivan; Lawrence; Johnny; Julian; Charles; Jogger Lai Fong and I, set off for the recce of the new cycling route.

It was a relaxing & enjoyable ride along the greenery…..scenic and passing by many architectural bridges. The distance we covered is about 19 km coastal ride, starting from the bicycle kiosk to Punggol End and go back by a different route.

It was indeed a great workout for all of us, thank you Ivan for gathering all the cycling enthusiasts and nice meeting the rest of you. Julian and I have to cycle back home, so both of us covered a total distance of about 22 km…hehehe…till then see you all again!

    Ah Nee

  14. Hi Ivan,

Good morning! Now my eyes and mind can see clearly. You are very alert even after cycling. I am laughing at myself now while typing this respose. How can I made such a silly mistake. During my carreer age bosses praise me for being meticulous. Why am I so switch off now? Why Ah? :)

Yes it should be 19 May Saturday. If you don’t alert me, I may end up bringing sushi to join ChristinaCL Chan for the Jurong Lake walk. :) I STAND CORRECTED. :)

    Cheers to you! :)

  15. Dear Lily

Sorry have to miss cycling again. Daughter needs my help at the markets. She has one in the morning n one in the evening.

    Regards
    Carly

  16. Hi Ivan

    Lai Fong

  17. Hi Eileen,
Thanks for re-confirming your attendance for 19May(AM).

    Hi Lai Fong,
Its OK! Yes, the Ponggol/Sengkang/Buangkok routes will be in July or August. These routes will be slightly longer, around 25km.
So, by end this year, the SHC Mthly Cycling Event will average about 30km per ride …… :))

  18. Hi there,
I’ve joined your cycling activities at East Coast once many moons ago but due to busy work schedule I’ve not been active since. As I’ve not cycled for a loooonng time, I don’t think I can cover the whole distance. But I would love to join in this time to catch up with you all again. I may have to give up half way. Will bring my own bike. I live nearby, btw.

    c ya

  21. Hi Ivan / others ,

How to go to Hougang KPTiam ?

Is this meeting place near the how gang mrt stn ?

If not pls. enlighten me. thanks

  22. Hi StevenC,
From Hougang MRT Station, please take Bus Svc #74 or #147.
    Alight at the 3rd Bus-Stop.
At this Bus-Stop, you will be able to see the 24hrs KPT Kopitiam (Block 401 Hougang Ave 8, Singapore 530401)and across this Bus-Stop, you will see the Ponggol Park itself.
Hope that you will be able to find your way there.
If not, please use google map, street directory, OneMap, SBSTransit etc.
    Thank you.

  23. Hi cycling kakis / others,

THANKS to Lily Ho and others who took time off to recee the place.

This is my 1st. time to the park.
I was AMAZED that there is so much greenery , rivers and windy coastlines as we cycle from one spot to another. THe place is not crowded even at weekends . Wonderful to cycle . Whee! The PCN connects to Pasir Ris, Sengkang ,Serangoon AND PUNGGOL . Whoa we had a huge playground to cycle.

Thanks to Charles Chua for kindly offering us some delicious cakes for all of us.

Unlike the ECP cycling park where we have to zoom in and out to avoid colliding with the children who suddenly dash out from nowhere and worse still the skate boarders.

However, the only set back is the trees are still young and do not offer much shade. Imagine cycling for 2h for abt 8km with some rests in between under the HOT sun yesterday at 34 deg C but was OVERCOME with the nice company of SHCians we had GREAT FUN.

In future,to avoid the blazing sun, we can start earlier and reach the rental bike station at 8 am. and finishes by 10 am. ( the air is much cooler then ) and the ride will be more pleasurable.

I am glad to meet new members Alan and Lawrence .

Alan, how was the very crispy salted roast pork , German pork chops , rare-cooked beef cubes and the specially cooked fried rice with beef scrappings and nothing else ( their own recipe ) .

Not forgetting to thank you for video taping and photoshooting us in our cycling journey with your special mini toy digital camera . Very impressive indeed!

specially fried rice with beef scrapings ?

  24. Hi Senior Citizens ,

If you belong to this class , then the rental bike will be only $3 per hr. during week days only. Perhaps, some one can be EO for this ad hoc event for week days so as not to clash with the official monthly cycling. This cycling exercise is a great way to maintain our healthy body and mind.

Alan or Lawrence or others would you like to volunteer to be EO ?

  25. Hi StevenC #32&33,

TQ veri muc 4 volunteering 2 write d “Cycling Event Report”.

Yes, it will b great if we can start earlier at 7:30am – 8:00am. However, this would mean only SHCians with own bike and living around/near Hougang (or those willing to crawl out of bed that early) can/will make it. Also cos d Jomando Bike Rental Kiosk only starts operating at 9:00am …. to 8:00pm

Alternatively, may be we should changed the starting time to late afternoon cycling to avoid the blazing Sun. Say, starts at 5:30pm instead of the usual 4:00-4:30pm? Starting at 5:30pm will also give us enough time (d usual 2hrs riding time) too, since the Bike Rental Kiosk closes at 8:00pm….

Apart from the above, we can also organise a late evening cycling event, say starting at 7:00pm-7:30pm…..this again will be for SHCians with own bicycles etc. Cos again due Bike Rental Kiosk closes at 8pm etc….

Just curious, besides the normal/regular SHCian coming to the Mthly Cycling Event, can we have a show of hands from the other SHCians keen to ride/join if we make some changes as per the timings as per below:

    Option A – start earlier at 7:30am – 8:00am
Option B – start at late afternoon, around at 5:50pm
    Option C – start later at 7:00pm – 7:30pm

If yes, please indicate your interest here. Thank you.

p/s: Had sounded out to the owner of Jomando Bicycle Rental Kiosk to possibly sponsor some of their company’s Dri-Dry T-Shirts and some other freebies for a SPECIAL SHC RIDE soon. Details will be announced later…….

  26. Hi Ivan,

How about another option to start at 4pm, like the usual starting time in our ECP rides. We can meet earlier for tea at 3pm, start 4pm, finish about 6.30pm, followed by typical Singaporean must-have, DINNER.

Then perhaps once in 4 or 6 months, we can try a night ride, cycle to Lor Halus, Pasir Ris and Changi Village for supper, and back, probably about 50 kms, but over a longer time, with more tea, water and supper breaks.

  27. Hi All,
Typo-error in Option B. Should be:
Option B – start at late afternoon, around at 5:30pm (not 5:50pm)

    Hi CharlesC #35,

The usual start time for the cycling event had always been 4:00-4:30pm, so no diff as per your post.

As for the Lor Halus to Pasir Ris Park, I did this on 19May (PM) since I couldn’t join you guys in the (AM) session.

Errh, not suitable for newbies and even some recreational SHC cyclists who are afraid of going onto the “traffic/main roads” …..it may be too risky for some SHCians.

As for Lor Halus to Pasir Ris to Changi Village, MMMmmmmm. Nice but I haven’t thot about that yet …. most probably it will be a 4-5hours ride. And most parts will be on the “traffic/main roads too. How?

I think will need to do some/many recce rides to find another/alternative paths for the above routes. So that we can avoid as many parts of these “traffic/main roads” as possible. This will take some time to do.

Will try to organise these recce rides but will need some of you guys/gals to come forward to help do it. For safety reasons, better group control etc, will have to limit the recce rides to a maximum 4 or 5 cyclists only.

Those interested to do reece rides with me, please email me separately. Starting point will always be Ponggol Park and you should preferably have own bikes…TQ TQ.

  28. Hi Ivan Lim,

I prefer option B ( starts at 5.30pm and end at 7.30 pm and proceed for dinner. –

Option A seems difficult. If at 7.30 am, I need to reserve 1h to travel from Clementi to Hou gang by MRT and then by bus to KOPi T. That means I had to crawl out of bed at 5.45 am still yawning zzzzzz in order to reach PPark in time. Well, we have to sacrifice some time if we want to start early.

Hope those interested made up your mind fast and sms to Ivan re your time preference to make the job of the EO easier. Thanks Ivan for exploring the inner depths of the PP.

The park is in Hougang area why name Punggol Park ?

  29. #33-Steven Chan:- weekdays is no problem for me to lead, just let me know a day in advance.

#34-Ivan:- Weekends evening is crowded with strollers at Punggol Promenade & Punggol Waterway Park. Walk will be more suitable and it’s beautiful at the Punggol Waterway Park.

#36 – Ivan:- Will join you in your next recce ride to Changi. Had followed some cyclists through this route last year. Took about 2 hours each way.

  30. Hi StevenC,
Noted your comments and interests. TQ.

    Hi LawrenceL,
Great that you know these routes – TQ again for raising your hands. Very much appreciated.
I will be busy next 3 weeks or so. Will organise the recce rides via private emails sometime in early ~ mid July.

    Cheers!

  31. Dear EOs and cycling enthusiats…..

I am Hougang “nan”, can join you guys / gals in the recce and cycling trips if I am free. No preference in the timing, just follow lor….

    Cheers!
    Ah Nee

  34. Hi, Steven,
I have to say sorry again for miss look your comment for the sumptuous and delicious dinner that I had attended. It is real good Crispy salted roast pork, (but it very nice and no salty), the beef was wonderful taste and tendering, (it make my saliva dangling at my mouth), but you forgot to mention about the salted crab and chilli crab, those are my favour food..
Thank you, I am awaiting for your invitation again for the special fried rice with beef scrappings.
