Cataract surgery

Thank you for responding to my call for help, regarding cataract surgery.

Thank you for taking time to share your experience – by making comments on the forum, and by emails.

All of you have contributed to my decision-making process.

I had cataract surgery done at Tan Tock Seng Hospital – my right eye last week, and my left eye today. The good doctor applied the phaco emulsification technique.

It was indeed a “simple procedure” – painless. Post surgery, after a one-hour rest, I was discharged from the day surgery center. I can see immediately after surgery, albeit a little blur. As the day progressed, the eye’s focus became clearer.

Some of you wrote, asking me to update regarding my cataract surgery. The above update is brief. If you need more detail, please let me know.

I’d like to thank everyone, once again, for responding to my call for help.

  1. Dear Jacqueline,

I am pleased to know that you under went the cataract ops successfully. I now wish you a speedy recovery.

Do not go near steam or heat at the stove etc which will irritate your operated eyes.

    Rest well.

    Geok Suan

  2. Hi Jacqueline

All the best wishes for your quick and complete recovery! Do take care as Geok Suan says, and do not strain your eyes or lift heavy objects or… there’s a host of do’s and don’ts.

Yes, a cataract operation is nowadays a fast, simple procedure compared to what it was some forty or fifty years ago. I remember my grandfather after an operation had to remain motionless in bed for four days and wear those characteristic bottle-end lens glasses.

The present-day op is so effective now that you may not need glasses; my aunt after an operation can read off the bus numbers at a great distance and notice all the warts and blemishes on our faces!

  3. Hi Jacqi

Glad to know that the first operation was a success. Wishing you a successful and safe operation today.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

    Take care.

    Carly

  4. Hello Jacqueline

So nice to know that your cataract operation is successful.
I wish you a speedy recovery.

Would appreciate when you are feeling a bit better (i.e. with 100% clear vision on both eyes) ha ha ha! and(needless to put on any more spectacles) that you please share in more detail re : the phaco emulsification procedure. I am sure a lot of the members would be very interested also.

    Cheerios !

  5. Geok Suan #1 – I am doing just fine. Thank you.

How was the laser treatment to relieve pressure in your eye? All’s well?1

    Take good care.
    Cheers
    Jac

  6. Kenneth #2 – Hi!

Yep, there is a list of dos and don’ts….

    Thank you for reminding me.

Indeed – I am amazed at the medical advances made in the technology of restoring sight.

Yes – like your happy aunt – I no longer need spectacles! And yes – I can see all the zits and wrinkles on MY FACE.

Thank you for your “get well” wishes. I hope your AMD is responding well to treatment.

    Take care!

  7. Caroline #3 – HI HI HI

    Thank you for dropping by.

Actually, the left eye surgery was done on 23 May morning.
I wrote this post on 23 May afternoon – the very day after the left eye surgery. But this post was held up “pending review”, and published on 29 May.

Both eyes have recovered. The recovery was “speedy”.

Will catch up with you during one of the SHC gatherings.
    Cheers,
    Jac

    “Hi Jacqueline,

I pray that you have a speedy recovery and is able to join us soon for activities.

I remember the last time I met you when you were so kind to offer your condo club for our SHC monthly gathering.”

    Jacqueline Han Says:

Hi Steven Chan – I’ve copied and pasted your comment into this new thread –

HOW ARE YOU??? Long time no see.
Certainly I remember you – we met during the September monthly gathering in 2009 at Gillman Heights. Wait a minute… did I just say “2009”? What year is it now? Argh … 2012! It seemed like only last year…..

It’s good to hear from you. Glad to know that you have put your “suicidal episode” behind, and have made great strides forward, by coming out to participate in SHC activities, and speaking up in forums. Keep it up!

Thank you for your “get well wishes”!

    You stay well, too!
    Cheers,
    Jac

  9. Hi Jac,

Thanks for inquiring. The Doc lasered my rt eye, 21 laser shots. but I think that my sight has gotten worse. Could be that my cataract is worse now. The specialist talked about op then at last visit he told me there is no hurry.

    Still able to see.

    Geok Suan.

  10. HI Jacqui

  16. #13 Myra –

Glad that you find it interesting. No – no need to thank me.

I wrote the “cataract surgery” post, firstly to gather information. Secondly, to share the information.

When my eyes started to develop cataract, I was quite lost and bewildered. I didn’t know what to do.

Yep – I remember our Beginner’s Mahjong Lessons…. me too. I didn’t get to practice what I’ve learned.

We’ll catch up during one of the SHC gatherings.
    Take care.
    Jac

  17. Hi Jacqueline! Thank you for sharing your successful cataract surgery with us. Does the cataract in the eyes need to be ‘ripe’ before surgery can be done?

    Cheers
    ros

  18. Rosalind #18 – Hello, how are you?

The cataract does NOT “need to be ‘ripe’ before surgery can be done”.

I have two old neighbours – they’ve been having cataract for the last few years, getting worse, and “cannot even read newspaper nowadays”, yet their doctors said, “not yet ripe”.

After all the info that I have gathered, and been thru the surgery myself – I encouraged them to go ahead with the surgery – no need to wait for the “cataract to ripen”.

Do you have an aged parent/relative who is having cataract?
Do check out my earlier post “Cataract surgery – please help”. There were many helpful input from other cataract patients – real life experiences. I hope you find those info useful.

  19. Geok Suan #9

So sorry to hear that your “sight has gotten worse”.

My eye doctor said to me : “Cataract not ripe yet… come back in 6 months and we’ll check again…”

But my eye sight was blur, my right eye more blur than my left eye. I replied, “No, I have decided to go ahead with surgery. Please tell me more about what are my options (choice of lens, etc….)

After the discussion, I was sent to the eye-lab. A series of eye tests were conducted, and a surgery date was fixed.

    I hope this information helps.

    Take care.
    Jac

  20. Hi Jacqueline! It’s me I’m enquiring for.
I have cataracts but the last time I saw an eye doctor, she said ‘it’s not ripe yet’. If surgery can be done before my cataracts ‘ripen’, I would love to do it as I have been myopic since 8 yrs old – 650 degrees on both eyes and I have to use reading glasses for reading….:(

Thank you for the info, will check with an eye specialist on the op you had.

    Cheers
    Ros

  21. Hi guys!

Other than makan and travel, the next popular topic is health! And yes, as we age, we have more and more health issues to address.

I am so glad that cataract surgery has advanced so far that it is a simple procedure and can restore normal vision to so many. We all have some cataract developing as we age so the doctors say, but when we have to consider the op it is usually when the cataract/s interfere with our reading, driving, etc. We can, of course, opt for an earlier op if we like to… so the “ripe or not ripe” issue.

I would like again to suggest supplementation to help improve or delay the onset of cataract. Besides using good polarising sunglasses, there are certain supplements we can take: lutein, bilberry, zeaxanthin, vitamin E and C, omega 3 all play a role in eye health. There is also a clinically proven supplement from the pine bark, expensive but effective for the tiny capillaries in the eye.

If you would like the brand names of the supplements you can email me at dalken@starhub.net.sg

Geok Suan #9: You had laser?? I had this done twice for macular bleeding in the right eye. Somebody compared it to putting plaster on a wound in terms of effectiveness. I hope yours wasn’t a similar situation.

  22. Hi Jacqueline #16

Glad to hear that you’re recovering v well :-)

Re: my name, yes, named after the Angel Gabriel. Nonetheless, this is a boy’s name and the Priest (an Italian one) recommended the name “Gabriella” (Italian female version of Gabriel; English version is Gabrielle) to my parents when I was too little to object… I didn’t like the name cos most teachers/school friends were unable to pronounce it correctly and called me really ‘weird’ names then. Ha3

Ah Huat, huat huat calls me ‘Gabra’!!! :-(

    Warmest regards ……

  23. Rosalind #21

So sorry to hear that you have cataract. Do have a chat with your eye specialist, find out what are your options.

If you need further information, but you are shy to ask me in this forum, you may email jacqhan@gmail.com

    Take good care.

    Cheers,
    Jac

  24. Gabriella #23

“Most teachers/school friends were unable to pronounce it correctly” and called me really ‘weird’ names then.”

You didn’t like your name Gabriella? Wait till you hear the Chinese name that my Grandmother gave me!

I thought the short form “Gabe” or “Gabby” sounds endearing and cool.

    Cheers,
    Jac
