This is Home Truly, our home, our Singapore. Our greetings on this National Day, from the SilverHairsClub

Many of us have been in Singapore for more than 45 years.  We have a short history; and yet it is full of memories for us.  Let’s take this opportunity to share our feelings about Singapore.  It is very nice of Dolly to put up this National Day song; and I like to invite you to also share with fellow members your favourite ND songs.  Wishes too.

Enjoy this occasion.

  1. Hi Terence! This is a nicer version of ‘This is Home Truly’ but I am confused as to what the different scenes before the song was sang meant.

    1) Toilet cleaner suffering from backache;
    2) NS guy dragging his feet to camp and being punished;
    3) Tuition teacher reading to her student who finds her
    boring;
    4) Tired taxi driver who nodded of to sleep on his steering
    wheel;
    5) Foreign worker coughing….

    Can anyone tell me what is the message and how is it associated with the song’s lyrics?

    Blur Ros :(

  2. Just want to share my understanding of this “Another Home” music video produced by SINdie. According to the producer it’s was meant to celebrate SND in a different way. To be fun for sgrean to laugh at themselves. It show scene reflecting our local news before, on and after the GE2011.

    Each year our ND music video theme will paint a rosy picture of Singapore we call home. “Another Home” as it was named show an opposing view. It gone viral so much so that some thought it was this year official NDP theme. This year original song/video was dull compare to this one and less silly compare to last year fun-pack/lady gaga theme.

    “Can anyone tell me what is the message and how is it associated with the song’s lyrics?”

    Beside the point mention above that this music video was meant to provide a fun way to oppose the view of the ideal home my understanding of the different scene is as follows:

    1) Toilet cleaner suffering from backache and worker coughing… (Lower-income workers overworked….very ‘Cham’ look as she cleaned the mirrors of the Old School toilet. Coughing also need to work. Why not get MC? Bad healthcare for workers? Looks like producer is asking “What Do You Think?”)

    2) NS guy dragging his feet to camp and being punished; (Remember the news about Maid carrying NS man bag? Ha ha! Now this NS man got to carry own bag that is why he is draging his feet and was now punished for not carrying own bag before.)

    3) Tuition teacher reading to her student who finds her boring; (tutor is actually explaining about the growth of mushroom. Very “Chim” right?. Remember the story about trees and mushroom told by one of our minister during GE2011? Ha ha! Even adult find story telling by minister very boring.)

    4) Tired taxi driver who nodded of to sleep on his steering wheel; (another analogy used in GE2011. Try to recall the blue shirt opposition talking about the need to have a co-driver and the men in white rebutted. Now the driver in white was caught sleeping and the man in blue (co-driver) slap him to wake him up. Get the joke?

    Happy National Day.!

    Stay Healthy! Be Happy! :)

  3. #2 Johnny Pow,

    Johnny how absolutely brilliant you are in interpreting the various scenarios in this video! I thought it was the official video for National Day, albeit, an updated version!

    Oh yes, I can see the analogies depicted through your explanations. Thank you very much!

    Cheers

  4. As we each celebrate National Day in our own way, I cannot help but bring up some important issues highlighted in last Saturday’s Straits Times:

    In the Saturday section page D4: “Watch out for divide between old and young”: A very real fault line is developing between the seniors and younger citizens with serious political and social tensions that could threaten our society.

    Page D9 “Growing old is not a sin” again highlights the rising age-ism issues which will impact our Singapore society. How shall we address these?

    Page D8 “Adapting the workplace to ageing workers”: Although about European corporations, highlights the need to address the older workers’ skill, physical and re-training restraints.

    I am confident that our government is aware of and addressing these issues but can enough be done and on-time before this “tsunami” hits us?

    Can we encourage a social system of support and concern for our seniors, especially the less-abled in our midst? How can we impart civic consciousness and respect for the elderly beyond the “kindness” movement?

    What more can be done on “reserve seats” on the MRT? Don’t buses also have reserve seats and do not the same courtesies apply on them?

    More than the tongue-in-cheek of the Another Day ND song, we must look at and confront all these issues not only for ourselves but for the country’s future.

    Happy National Day!

  5. Hi Kenneth and members,

    I am pretty amazed to read that today’s baby boomers are more well-to-do than previous generations, and likely more also than with future generations. Of course, there are many who need help to get through day-to-day. While there is a need to focus on seniors, I see that many seniors are either employed or part-time employed. Maybe this explains why the national focus is on elderlies or invalid elderlies. Which probably explains why more nursing and homes and beds are being put up, in estates.

    Sometimes, I think that SilverHairsClub members are not representative of Singapore seniors. Which probably explains why many of us do not speak up on topics relating to seniors, elderlies and ageing. I am beginning to see that the silent or quieter members are concerned about these issues, but may not speak up.

  6. This year’s NDP theme song (Love At First Sight) is one of the best and sung so sweetly. :) Wonder who the composer and the lyricist are.

    Good news – in conjunction with the National Day celebrations, admission to ALL museums is FREE throughout the month of August! :)

  7. In the beginning there was this ND songs “Five Stars Arising”. Since then i believe many sporeans been looking forward to each year wondering what the next ND songs be. Is it going to be a retroistic song like “Count on Me Singapore”, “Stand Up for Singapore” or just another encouraging one to make us feel for Spore and be Sporean instead of just Chinese, Malay, Indian or Eurasian. As it evolve, ND song started to adopt a more pop culture feel and those patriotic ones start to read between the lines of the lyrics for its underlying meanings. Just few years ago the more celebrity sounding one like “Moments Of Magic” get good review.

    This year “Love at First Light” by Iskander Ismail which Paul Tan wrote have Olivia Ong (popular) and Natanya Tan (impressive 7 year old) as lead singers.

    Should ND song be an easily sing along or those that have notes that only singers can hit and sporean just listen to appreciate.? Are the lyrics easy to understand? I have to watch the repeat of this year NDP especially during the time when “Love at First Light” goes live. First time going holiday during our ND. Anyone remember 2010 when Kit Chan performed the popular 1998 NDP theme song “Home”? The whole nation sings along. Will this year be the same for “Love at First Light”?

    I love Singapore the place i was born,
    Never thought of migrating till i am gone,
    How i wish can write a memorable song,
    to encourage all singaporean be united,
    Stay Healthy! Be Happy! and Be strong!

    :) :) :)

  8. Hi Johnny #8
    So the NDP song title is ‘Love at first light’. Looking at the lyrics, this title makes more sense than ‘Love at first sight’.

    Personally i feel that an NDP theme song should be composed with mass singing in mind.

    As for your wish to compose a memorable song – well you can try singing your lyrics to the tune of ‘Bangawan Solo’ Just add another three lines of lyrics. I think it works! :)

  9. Hi Jassmine,

    I shared the same view that ND song should be all can sing along. Thank you for your encouraging suggestion. I have to go to Surakarta park to find Gesang’s statue for inspiration. :)

    Stay Healthy! Be Happy!
