Rail Corridor X-treme, 25 Aug 2012

  • Date : Saturday, 25 August 2012
  • Time : 9.30 am
  • Meeting Place : concourse of Kranji MRT Station

Getting There :

  • MRT North-South line. Get off at Kranji Station
  • Buses : 160, 170, 178, 925, 960, 961

EOs : Jeffrey Lim and Joyce Tan

The walk : Those who have done the Pipeline Ramble X-treme will find this walk relatively easy. The route, along the former railway line, will more or less be parallel to the Pipeline Ramble X-treme trail. But as we all know trains can’t go up steep slopes, so the walk will generally be on level ground.

This walk will be broken down into several stages, totaling about 22 km. Those who don’t want to do the whole walk can join/leave the walk at the various way points. Times given are approximate depending on the pace of the group.

Start point – Start at Kranji MRT 9.30 am

Way point 1 (7.0 km) – Break at coffee shop Block 160A Jalan Teck Whye (multi-storey car park) 11.00 to 11.30 am

Way point 2 (3.0 km) – Lunch Break at Rail Mall 12.30 to 2.00 pm.

There are several eating places at Rail Mall such as Cedele (deli), Subway (sandwiches), Ah Mei Cafe (prata, chicken rice), Eat (fish ball noodles). There are also a couple of pubs for those who are inclined for a mid-day tipple!

Way point 3 (6.4 km) – Break at Bouna Vista MRT 4.00 to 4.30 pm

End point (5.8 km) – End at Silat Road. 6.00 pm

There isn’t much by way of makan at this area. Depending on concensus we will adjourn to either Kereta Ayer Food Centre, People’s Park or Kok Seng (dinner point of Pipeline Ramble X-treme) for dinner.

  1. Hi EOs (Jeffrey Lim and Joyce Tan,

Your Rail Corridor X-treme sounds interesting. It is just another walk, look c look c and get together with SHCians (another SHC monthly walk????. Look to me like marathon, walking from 9am to 6pm with breaks in between. I think I will sweat all out by the end of the trip. Will consider about it when more infos are available later.

    Thanks for organising it.

  2. Hi Jeff and Joyce,

You are right to encourage the others to join this walk.

Just look for the nearest main road and take public transport back. Here in Singapore, you can never be far form the main road, a kopi shop or civilisation. Look at Mas Selamat, can survive for weeks.

I remembered tha last walk and how you encouraged me to complete the walk. So let be be the first to join.

    Thanks

  3. Hello HOs,
This is the kind of walk I am looking for. Unfortunately, I have signed on for another SHC event – Exploring Sentosa, which is another exciting walk. Hopefully, there will be another repeat. Thank you for the initiative.
    Cheers, winnie

  4. Hi All,

Let’s join in and sweat it out. If only we banish the notion of difficulty ahead, we all will not be discouraged by time and distance expected from any long distance walk. One axiom highlighted by an ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tsu as “journey of a thousand miles begins with one step” is as valid today as it was during his time.

It is good to burn energy together while chatting away in lively comradeship of the SHCian group identity as time speeds ahead. The long leisurely walk does improve blood circulation for the day which is beneficial healthwise for everybody.

It is obvious that long distance jogging or running is out of question for the elderly as newspapers previously did occasionally report the untimely deaths from heart attacks of even physically fit adults.

    Please list me in. Thanks.

  5. 5) Jacqwong says:-

    Hi All,

I just joined as member this morning. Interested to walk with all of you. Can I bring a friend younger than 45 years? I am of course older than 45.

  6. Hi Jeff/Joyce

After so much of shaking and dancing during the Arabian Nite, must turn my direction towards the 22km X-treme ramble on the railway line. As a hasher, how can I miss this long distance walk right?

    Please register me. Thanks!

    ON! ON!

  7. Hi EOs,

Pls count me in for this walk.

Just wanted to share an experience from the Pipeline Ramble X-treme. Had got both my toe nails clotted with blood from that walk. This was due to the pair of shoes I was wearing then had hard-caps. Took me a few months to have these clotted toe nails out-grow itself to get them clipped off….

So, Walkers, do use a good pair of soft toe-cap walking shoes for this coming Rail Corridor X-treme….

  8. Ivan #9

You hit the nail on the head… I mean toe!!

I suffered some two months of in-growing toenails because of poor-fitting shoes. It is not the hard caps but the fit of the front toe portion of the shoe: the shoe should grip the wider foot section just behind the toes and not squeeze the toes. For those interested to get good walking or track shoes… get a qualified shoe advisor from a sports shop to advise you.

There’s really nothing like a good pair of shoes and toes before you do the Rail Corridor Xtreme!

  9. Hi Kenneth @10,

I had in-grown toe nails before and I was told by the doctor that they are not caused by use of improper footwear. Rather that when we clean our toe nails, we usually dig out the dirt that gets accumulated on the 2 sides of our toes. This loosens the part of the toe, allowing our toe nails to grow to fill up the space. Then when we get in-grown toe nails.

The doctor insisted that no cleaning of our toenails should be done, particularly no digging out the dirt from the sides. He also insisted that the toe will naturally push out the dirt by itself.

While I find it hard to accept his advice, he might be right as I have not had any since my last visit to him.

Sorry to bring up such a topic, but wanted to share it with you.

Last Pipeline Ramble I used my open-toed sandals to walk, no problem. Only one stretch when we had to walk across a very muddy patch. As usual my foot sank into the mud and I was pricked by the mimosas around.

But really I don’t think we need to take all these precautions for this walk. Just bring some extra money, and if we feel tired, just head towards the main road and hail a taxi home. In Singapore, you cannot be too far away from any main road. Otherwise, just enjoy the company and plug along. Last Pipeline Ramble there were many ladies and some even finished ahead of the men, except for Jeffrey, of course. Also remember to bring some bananas, and some for those who don’t bring them.

Don’t let the “Extreme” scare you. Many cyclists were put off by the 30km., 50km., myself included, but when you complete such an event, you will be amazed at the confidence you build in yourself. And lick for SHC, Jeffrey is a very good leader in any walk.

Cheers and looking forward to the walk.

  10. Kenneth #10,
You will be participating in the coming walk – rite?

    Hahahaha Veronique & Jeffrey,
    Ya…ON! ON!
……do we need to lay the paper-trail for this walk?
……would there be an ice-block or pisspot at the end?
……those songs, can’t be sang at SHC walks – rite?
    ……brings back memories.:0)

  11. Hi All,

I am sorry that I’ll have to skip this walk as my wife will return from China on 25 August/12. She will reach home at about 10.00pm or later.

Meanwhile, I can’t let my pet dog go hungry as the SHC walk will end at Silat Road, Kg Bahru, at 6.00pm. By the time I reach home it should be between 6.45pm – 7.00pm. I know how terribly hungry it is for me to have my own dinner delayed. Since I don’t wilfully illtreat myself by having dinner late, I must not illtreat my pet dog likewise. Dogs without masters around do suffer from hunger pangs periodically from delayed meals.

Please cancel my name from the walk.

    Apologize for any inconvenience caused.

    Thank you.

  12. Hi Charles and Ivan

    No, I don’t think I can join the walk…

Charles, if your doctor thinks that cleaning toenails contributes to ingrown nails, then a lot more ladies will get them as they do pedicures, or am I mistaken?

Maybe you’re right… no cleaning of the sides of the nails??

Haha, I guess I will have to keep my toenails long and dirty!

  13. Hi Kenneth,

I don’t really know how many ladies go to pedicures, nor do I know how frequent they go. Also not having been to a pedicure myself, I am not familiar with how they clean the toes.

I do clean my toenails, but not the sides, ie I don’t dig the sides, only the top.

That is because when you clean the sides, the nail is loosened, a gap occurs allowing for the toenail to grow unrestricted. Then, In-grown toenails, abscess etc.

Also you have to cut your nails straight across, not curving down towards the sides, as most kids will do. That is a definite no-no.

Wear sandals like me, more appropriate for our climate.

Why are you not joining us for the walk? You don’t have to complete the walk. You can even join us midway. Just choose a convenient spot to join us, look for a kopishop when you arrive, call any of us to find out where we are, adjust your timing, read a book, etc and join us at your own timing. You can choose the evening to join us when it is cooler too.

    Cheers till then.

  14. Hi All,

Since my wife will be in China for TCM accupuncture consultation and she’ll be enjoying the company of my working daughter over there, if she is able to return to Singapore before Aug. 25, then, I’ll be freed from household duties like feeding my dog. In such a new “about-turn” development I should be able to participate in the “Rail Corridor Extreme” hike.

Let’s see how the situation pans out before a decision is made. It is still premature to talk about it now. I can’t put a horse before a cart, can I?

    Cheers.

  15. Dear All,

This activity is for SHC members.

    1) Such “Xtremes” walk is ‘ONCE in a blue moon! or perhaps if time permits, ONCE annually :D

    2) It is better that participant join the walk either
    a) at start point
    b) at Rail Mall when we break for lunch
    c) there are a number of break off points for Exit. Please ASK the leading EOs as they have recce the route.
Please REGISTER and indicate if you are joining only from Rail Mall, it will help to ease our logistics and also ensure that we are aware of your participation.

    For safety/logistic purposes – Please inform the leading EOs or any other EOs from the WalkTeam, before you break off from the group; unless it is a personal choice to lull amongst the bushes. {smile}

    Let’s RAMBLE ON! See u guys…. :D

    3x Cheers!
    ChristinaCL

  16. Hi All,

My wife called up from Shanghai indicating she’ll cut short her stay and fly back to Spore on 18th Aug/2012 meaning I’ll be able to join the SHC extreme walk on Aug. 25, 2012.
    WoW! = Wonder of Wonders!

Please list me in. See you all challenging bravehearts.
    Thank you.

    Terry

  17. Hello!

Altho’ I am no doomsday phrophet, we are in the middle of a rainy season, it’s good to bring a foldable brolly along just in case. It is anytime better than running for cover whenever it rains.

I’m speaking to strollers who won’t mind carrying some extra weight(umbrellas). I’m not suggesting that it would definitely rain on that day.

  18. Hi Jeffrey Lim & Joyce Tan,

Annie Tan and me wish to join this walk starting from Kranji. We also wish to join all for lunch at Rail Mall to end our walk.

    Stay Healthy! Be Happy! :)

  19. Hi Jeffrey/Joyce
I’m keen to join the walk – but am worried about the distance – because I’ve not walked such distances before. I wouldn’t want to be a burden in case i can’t make it through. Is the terrain rough? Slopes? Is normal running shoes good enough – esp after reading “scary stories” about the ingrown toe nails etc? I’d join from kranji and then decide if i can make it for the second half to Rail Mall and beyond. Thanks
    inez

  20. #25 Inez

As mentioned in the post, the walk is on level ground. Where there are slopes, they’re very gentle (trains can’t go up steep slopes). Also mentioned in the post, there are several way points where you can leave the walk if you had enough for the day.

Normal running shoes will do. That’s what I wore for the reccee and that’s what I’ll be wearing for the actual walk.

  21. Hi Jeffrey and Joyce

I will join you folks for the walk next Saturday. I assume you will be walking from Kranji Station into Kranji Road to go onto the Railway Corridor. I will wait for you guys at the junction of Kranji Road and the Railway Corridor at 9.30 am, because I come from Sungei Kadut direction.

  22. #25 Lim Tian Soo

Yes, we’ll be walking along Kranji Road to link up with the rail corridor. You can wait for us at the NParks signboard.

  23. Hi All,

I love wearing slippers anywhere, anytime except on formal occasions in response to etiquette requirements like going to church, a wedding dinner, or a dance party.

That said, I’ll be coming in slippers as usual as with all previous SHC walks. I wear safety shoes only where the terrain is very hilly and slippery upon receiving prior notice.

Subject to my being abroad, tied down by a prior appointment or have fallen ill, I’ll always make an effort to join any SHC walk to partake in comradeship with fellow SHC members. Concurrently it will help me to imprint in my mind the faces of my new-found friends inside SHC. This is not a lame excuse per se. The elderly often find it extra hard remembering new faces. I’m amongst the victims.

Thank you all SHC EOs for stewarding the walk.

    Blessings,

  24. Hi All
I understand that besides Charles Wee, some other members also took photos of the above event. If you are one of the photographers, I would be grateful if you could email your photos to me so that I can upload them at one go. My email address is lee_kingseng@hotmail.com

  25. Hi Jeffrey & Joyce,

If not going for the Sentosa walk, Annie and me will want to complete the whole route Jocye and you recce. Thank you Jeffrey for leading and organizing. This walk give us an opportunity to catch up with those we know and also meet new friends. Now i know Veronique not just a belly dancer but with full of energy running back and forth taking photgraphs. Hope to see you all ladies and gentlemen again.

    Stay Healthy! Be Happy! :)

  26. Hi Jeff and Joyce,

Thanks for organising this Extreme walk again, all the recces, posts replies, getting everybody together, etc.

We had very good weather and the walk was very well-planned.

I enjoyed the walk extremely tho’ I have to admit my hips hurt this morning, even tho’ I did not complete it.

But just as well as when I reached the loo in Alexandra Hosp, it was JIT. Will learn to get up earlier next time.

I look forward to the next walk, extreme or otherwise.

    Cheers to All.

  27. Dear EOs thanks for organizing this event.
It was a very enjoyable walk topped-up by a sumptuous dinner (and chilled Beer).
Hats off to the 8 youngsters who completed the trek!!!

  28. Hi EOs,
Just wanted to echo our THANKS again….
    Indeed a very enjoyable and a good “work-out” walk….
Looking forward to view the scenic photos soon…and the next “work-out” walk soon…

    ChristinaC,
Had just sent you an email for new/potential walking routes from Sengkang Riverside Park to either Yishun Central (SAFRA) or to Jalan Kayu (Roti Prata) vis Seletar North Link.

  29. Pictures will be uploaded by King Seng soon. Those who have taken pictures and want to share, please send them to King Seng (#37).

The pictures that were taken by me (actually just my camera, pictures were mostly taken by Veronique) have been sent to King Seng but they are low resolution pictures meant for web viewing. Whoever wants the high resolution pictures can e-mail me after they have been uploaded.

  30. I enjoyed the walk with you folks much more than the day Jeff & I did the recce, thank you for the great company.

Glad to see Gerry and all finished the whole trek with satisfaction too.

    Cheers,
    JoyceT
