Funny familiar forgotten feelings.

In response to Terence’s fantasy on our secondary days I want to add on it. Those were the days in school where we rejoice over the time spend learning and preparing our life for the tasks ahead.

I remember where towards the end of our secondary days we gathered together to do something meaningful and where we will cherished for life. The thing we do is to get those friends that we met to write on our autograph books. It will be something for each of us to remember the good times spend together in school.

I want to recollect here some of the poems that were written down. Most of them I have forgotten. These are some I remember. Some are rhymes and rhythm, some love poems. How many have ever ask your school mates to sign your autograph?

Here goes:

"Roses are red and violet are blue, I am allergic, I will sue".

"Drink hot coffee and drink hot tea, burn your lip and remember me".

"Remember me and my wishes while in the kitchen washing dishes, if the water is too hot, cool it and forget me not."

"Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet and so are you."

"Remember me early, remember me late, remember me at the old school gate".

More to come and I hope to get more contribution from fella members.

After reading your messages in your autograph book, I am wondering what became of those class/school mates? Any idea?

Also, if we could turn back time (ooh, reminds me of a song), would we do what we did (knowing the shiat that awaits us or the happily ever after shiat). Hmmmmm……

  2. Geraldine,

look like not many would want to share their experiences in writing to their friends and schoolmates. Those fella students that we have parted with may have establish their own peculiar life and family.

I believe that there may be some remembrances of the past that influence the choices that we made. And this have made us what we are today.

Writing our own autograph means having ro recollect our past joy and happiness. The sharing of laughters and celebration of life have kept us sane.

    Here to share another:

Quote “You and I are friends
    You laugh, I laugh
    You cry, I cry
    You scream, I scream
    You run, I run
    You jump, I jump
    You jump off a bridge,
Well, I am gonna miss you buddy! Unquote.

  3. “Those were the days…” Autograph writing times were proud moments and we wrote carefully, decorating the page, colouring and throwing in the most popular acronym F.R.A.N.C.E (Friendship remains and never can end), followed by I.T.A.L.Y. (I trust and love you) and H.O.L.L.A.N.D. (forgot the meaning now!)

In my old autograph book, my favourite entries were and still are:
    1. Work has a bitter root but a sweet fruit…(from a classmate)
    2. The grand essentials of happiness are something to do, something to love and something to hope for…(from a teacher)

    Nostalgia. :)

  4. Hi Jassmine,

H.O.L.L.A.N.D. means “Hope Our Love Lasts And Never Die”

May i ask, is this written by a guy or girl in your autograph.? :)

    Stay Healthy! Be Happy! :)

  5. Hi Johnny #4

So H.O.L.L.A.N.D. means that. I thought I.T.A.L.Y.was good enough but H.O.L.L.A.N.D.is better! Regret not giving the writer a second look ………lol!Just joking. :)

  6. Roses are red and violets are blue, our hairs are silverish black.
Don’t look down on our SilverHairs for you will become the same thirty years from the future back.
If you ask us why our hairs are silver, your answers will not lack.

    Kaiors

  7. Janie, Rosalind,

    I wonder which is correct?

Keep it simple stupid, Keep it short n simple or Keep it short n sweet?

Now see if you can decipler this, “RICKY”?

  8. Hi Geraldine Ting,

What is shiat ? New Hong kong slant ?
    Pls. enlightened me.

    Hi Dan,

Sounds like Rub In C..K with KY. Ha! ha! :)
Must be reading too much of the Kama Sutras ???

  9. Hahaha, Sweet Giraffe Steven Chan

It simply means shit; I feel it is more polite, kakakakaa, to say shiat instead.

    Hope you are enlightened. Woof!

Curiosity is the mother of all inventions. Now we can fathom
why some scientists selflessly paid for their lives from scientific mishaps all in the name of advancement for mankind. Without science and technology, we all could be still riding on horse drawn carriages instead of flying on jet airliners from country to country.

  11. Hi Terry,

    Grammar correction noted.

How about adding 3rd part to Ricky?

    c) Remember Inside Car Kissing You…sex for contract? :)

    Stay Healthy! Be Happy! :)

  12. Geraldine,

Belly good, you got it! The worded question is intentional, anyway thanks for the correction.

Terry, you got it correct and added another version. Those were the days while in school we learn and do so many new things.

    Susan, is Terry interpretation correct?

    Johnny, that’s a interesting conjecture.

    From an anonymous.

‘You learn to like someone when you find out what makes them laugh, but you can never truly love someone until you find out what makes them cry’.

    Does this statement makes sense?

    Dan

  13. Susan,

I thought I know that but getting old and forgetful. Think I am of the older generation and you must be from the younger generation.

    More autogragh sharing:

    1. As long as Singapore stands, our friendship will never end.

    2. Never tell lies, always be nice, that’s the way to paradise.

    3. Good better best, go and never rest. From good to better, from better to best.

    4. Today is treasure, tomolo is pleasure, remember me forever.

    5. Leaves may fade, flowers may die, friendship may end but never shall I.

    6. I have a pen, my pen is blue, I have a friend, my friend is you.

    7. Stars may trinkle, baby may cry, friend may forget but never shall I.

Contributed by a member when she was about to leave primary school.

Besides autograph, school magazine were put together and cylostyle (wonder if this is the correct spelling)and bind together for each of the classmates.

  14. Re. Back to our SHC monthly gathering..#67 & 69

    Hi Yatsing #67; Dan #69
Between the two of u , u’ve spotted all the song titles in the passage.Very impressive, esp Yatsing.

Now i shall up the ante by stringing the lyrics of some oldies into a story and interested readers can try to identify the titles of the songs from the lyrics…

    Sample:
It is the evening of the day and all my bags are packed, I’m ready to go – just waiting for the starry starry night.

“Don’t go! I need you oh my darling, like roses need rain!” says he.

“The pipes, the pipes are calling, and i must go..” I say, sadly.

“Oh let us make a pledge to meet in September…” pleads he.

I nodded and got into a cab. “Please excuse me while i cry” I say to the driver.”To the train station.”

The vision that was planted in my brain still remains when i saw the old house looks the same as i step down from the train, and i’m glad i came.
    ****
How many song titles do you recognise from the above story created mainly from song lyrics? Clue: more than 8.

  15. Thanks Jassmine for your contributions on this post.

I shall attempt to identify the songs lyrics:

    1. As tears go by (Marianne Faithful)
    2. Leaning on a Jet plane (John Denver/Carpenter)
    3. Vincent (Don Mclean)
    4. Roses need the rain (Mailani Mukainai)
    5. Danny Boy (Johnny Cash)
    6. Seal with a kiss (Bobby Vinton)
    7. Sound of silence (Simon & Garfunkel)
    8. Green green grass of home (Tom Jones)

    Dan

  16. Hi Dan #25
Not bad. You’ve got 78% of the song titles correct. :)
No. 4 is wrong.( btw, who on earth is/was Mailani Mukaini?)And one song remains unidentified.

Any diehard fans of English oldies can spot the missing song? And song no. 4 (acc to Dan’s list)?

  17. Hi Jassmine#24,

Is it “Chotto Matte Kudasai” for your “please excuse me while I cry”?

Here’s first part of the lyrics by The Sandpipers …
    hope its correct, hee.

    Chotto matte kudasai
Please excuse me while I cry
    Seems sayonara means goodbye
But no one ever told me why

  18. Hi Pearl #27
    Bingo!Absolutely correct! :)

Hmmm.. anyone recognise ‘i need you…like roses need rain’?

Maybe lyrics are too mushy, that’s why few can remember the song …lol!

  19. Yay Yay Yay … I got right?!

Mmm.. “i need you .. like roses need rain” –
sounds like Cliff Richard’s ” Twelve of Never”.
    Here it goes …….

You ask how much I need you
    Must I explain
I need you oh my darlin’
    Like roses need rain
You ask how long I’ll love you
    I’ll tell you true
    Until the twelfth of never
    I’ll still be loving you

    Jassmine … iszit ??

  20. Oh dearie me .. I soooo want a karaoke gathering with all these old songs popping out. Shall we, Jassmine & SHC friends?

    Be There!
    pearl.

  21. It was fun trying to recall all the song lyrics which show that dementia has not set in. This is a healthy exercise of the mind, let’s continue to indulge.

Thanks again Jassmine and Pearl and Lena for your input. Pearl, your call for crooners is heard. Let’s try to carry it out.

“I am a man who give his life and the joys of the world for the love of a …………….” so he laments.

“I live a life that full and travel along life ways……” so he boasts.

“Never let me go for you have made my life complete and all my dreams to come true………..” what more could I ask for?.

“I made up my mind to live in memory of the lonesome time. Those happy hours that we once had so long ago…” Times will heal a broken heard.

“No darkness comes, no first of spring,no song of love, no April rain……….” so he mourns.

“When tears are in your eyes, I am on your side, I will lay me down…….”

“It may well be that you take the sun away……..”

“Let’s the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you……..”

How many song titles are reflected here?

    Dan

  22. Hi Pearl #29 & 30
Bingo again! so the 12th Of Never is not a familiar forgotten feeling among baby boomers after all! :) I think the original singer is Donny Osmond (but i could be mistaken).

About the krk, the one at kolam ayer is convenient for me to go to. If it’s in the afternoon i should be able to make it, but i think 20 ppl is a little too big a group for individual singing. Can we have group krk singing (those who know the songs, join in the singing)? Maybe we can ask for 4 mics ? Just a suggestion. :)

  23. Hi Dan #32
You are right about the mental exercise. :)

Your lyrics list is very challenging – i only recognise two songs! no. 5. I just called to say I love you by Stevie Wonder & no.6. Bridge over troubled water by Simon & Garfunkle.

  24. Hi Jassmine, Dan & SHC frens,

I’ve booked the Kolam Ayer CC’s karaoke Lounge –
Full capacity is only 20pax and my gathering is usually 15pax cos we like to move the front seats for dancing space for itchy feet, hee.

    Date: Sunday 11 Nov
    Time: 1pm – 5pm
    MRT : Boon Keng station.

Big car park space within CC’s compound … FREE.
    KJ is ‘super nice guy’!

    Be There!!
    pearl.

  25. Hi Lena#31,

    Nice to hear from you!
Join us 11 Nov for a cosy afternoon’s karaoke get-together ya.

Free flow of hot drinks inclusive.
    Food & snacks allowed.

    See ya!
    pearl.

  26. Jassmine,

You can do better than that.

Hi Yatsing, want to give it a shot?

I don’t believe these should be difficult, if you need more clues I will oblige.

Pearl, I shall join you folks for the karoeke.

    Dan

  27. Hey Yatsing & Dan,

So happy that both of you are joining in the fun of oldies.
You can bring your own favourite DVDs.
And oh .. if you wanna dance, just wear a pair of comfy flat as the floor is carpeted, not ideal for your proper dancing shoes ya.

    See ya!
    pearl.

  28. Hi Dan#32,

I shall try, see if I get them right, hee hee ….

Song Title – “ALL FOR THE LOVE OF A GIRL”.

    2. “I live a life that’s full and travel along life’s way……”
    Song Title – “MY WAY”.

Very impressive indeed! Looks like you are the go to person for those funny, familiar, forgotten feelings golden English oldies! :)

About the krk, please include Ann Lim and me. Tks for organizing. :)

  30. More lyrics to ponder:

    1. “I saw the light as I pass by the window, she was a woman……………. so he croons.

    6. “Look into my eyes my love and see, all the lovely things you are to me………..”

    7. “And then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid ‘I love you’………….”

    10. “Oh my heart won’t believe that you left me……”

    11. “Last night quietly, she walked through my mind, as I lay searching for sleep, Her soft hand reached out, she whispered my name………….”

    12. “Life is like a moutain railroad, with an engineer that’s brave. We must make the run successful, from the cradle to the grave, Watch the curves, the fills, the tunnels, never falter, never quail……………”

    Dan

  31. Hi Jassmine#42,

Hehe, dont be impressed .. you also can do it if you have all the time like I had, you too can remember the songs. Take Dan’s latest song lists #45, you can actually feel the title popping out .. si bo? Am sure many can answer these.

Ok, you & Ann Lim are included for our fun-filled Sunday. Xie Xie!!

  32. Hey Robert#44,

This is not any karaoke gathering –
if you had been following this thread, its all about ‘Engilsh Oldies’ only.
Some of the song titles had been posted here.
You can quickly learn to sing some easy ones like “My Way” within these 3wks.,
or you can duet “Hey Paula” with me.
They are very simple & easy to sing songs.

    See ya!
    pearl.

  33. Hi Pearl

Can I come just supporting you, not sing, not dance (if Judy there, I like to sing Judy, Judy, Judy to the 17 years old lady), Can? If yes, count me in. Thanks

  34. Yippee Yay Yay!!
    Andrew Kor Kor#49,

This is the sweetest verse for any organiser –
“can I just come and SUPPORT YOU’.

Andrew, you’ve been my greatest supporter unless you’re in HK. Xie Xie!!
You can sing and dance .. Judy will be excited that you’ll sing and call out her name and I’ve yet to Rock & Roll with you now that I’ve learnt it a few mths back, hee. Always love to duet the Canto songs with you.
This time, can I request that you sing “The Wonder of You”?
Here’s part of the lyrics …..
“And you’re always there to lend a hand
    In everything I do
    That’s the wonder
    The wonder of you”.

  35. Hey Pearl, count me in! Really can bring our own food? I’ll probably bring ter-kar fried bee hoon and some home made acar. Jassmine #33, All the voices come together can bring the house down lo but I want to join in!

  36. Waseh Susan .. ter- kar fried bee hoon .. YUMMMM!!
Reminds me of the Kallang River potluck picnic – Rosalind, are u coming?
Shall we all sing Tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree and …
Itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polkadot bikini + I will follow u?
Aiyoh, cant wait till 11 Nov leh, kekekeke!!

  37. Hi Pearl

Whenever I join the KOK, I will always hold on the mic, don’t let go, and sing no matter I know the song or not. Someone called the people like me as “???”

This time, I want to learn to put down and let go, don’t touch the mic unless Judy join, then I must sing the song “Judy, Judy, Judey” to wish her “all at one she seventeen, ?????”

But since you allow me to sing one song, I will learn and sing it. Hope it will not spoil the mood of the event.

To Rock n Roll with me, are you sure? I must declare in advance – I am very ?? when dancing, I will not take any responsibilty for accidental steps on your toes when dance with you. You have to be prepared and careful, haha.

  38. Haha Andrew,

So you have this habit to sing every song throughout …
you mean you dont know the code of conduct during K session? hee.
Well, glad you’re learning to put it down or I’ll shout “ANDREW”!!! kakaka.

Mmm, I did not say to sing one song ..
I am requesting ONE song from you, of course you can sing to your heart’s content when your turn comes. Would like to request another song …
‘There goes my everything’, hou mah?

As for dancing, I think I’ll be stepping on you more than you do…
so we are quite ‘fair & square’, hahahaha!!

  39. Hi Pearl

Thanks for choosing the song “There goes my everything” for me. I like this song from ENGLEBERT HUMPERDINK totally – music, lyrics and the singer. It is more suitable to describe me

“There goes my reason for living, there goes the one of my dreams. There goes my only possession, there goes my everything”

I choose this one instead of “The wonder of you” from Elvis Presley, I don’t quite like hime.

  40. Andrew, have fun!! Wish I could join you guys. Sigh…

K’ok is always awesome; a great stress-reliever when you belt your hearts out.

As the saying goes, there will always be a next time and hopefully the same group of fun people will be there and I hope Mr Oei will join in too.

  41. Hi GT
1, 2, 3, 4, nice to see your 4 comments, but sorry that I am the last to call. That means I am in the lowest priority, woo…. haha, joke finished

How are you, FRIEND, Missed our duet “????” in our last KOK – ?????,???????,??????,???” You sing the lady part so well. Hope can make it with you again. Take care, my HK (Singapore) friend. Sure we have the next time, haha.

  42. Hi Susan #51
All sing together better than wait frustratingly for one’s turn to sing! lol!

    Hi Dan #45, Pearl #46

The lyrics in the second list are easier to recognise.
    1. Delilah 2. Yesterday once more
    3. x. 4. x.
    5. Unchained melody 6.x.
    7. Something stupid 8.x.
    9. (forgotten title)10.x.
    11. Funny familiar forgotten feelings? 12. X.

Still unable to score 50% of ‘test’! :(

  43. Jassmine,

Not bad, 11. is correct. 12. may be difficult unless you are a church goer.

Christmas is round the corner, the air of festivities will soon pervade us. We may get to remember some Christmas carols and songs!

    Can anyone guess this?
“I come to the garden alone while the dew is still on the roses, and the melody that he gave to me within my heart is ringing, and he walk with me and he talk with me and he tell me I am his own and the joy we share ………..”

    Dan

  44. Hi Andrew,
Glad you like the 2nd song ..
we’ll all sit back and enjoy it.

    Hi Geraldine#56,
We’ll arrange another k-gathering when you’re back here.
Didnt have the time to chat when you were here for the arabian nite.
    Take care!

  45. Wei Jassmine#58,

Wahh you got half right wor!
You know something .. Dan tricked us, haha .. is it Dan?
No: 3 & 10 are actually the same song.
No: 6 & 8 are also the same song.

    Lets see ….
    3 & 10 – “Dont forget to remember me”.
4 – “Lets just kiss and say goodbye”
    6 & 8 – “The shadow of your smile”
    9. – “Blue Hawaii”

    The song #59 ….
    “In the garden”.

    Is it Dan?

  46. Pearl,

Yes, you are right. 3 & 10 are same song, so is 6 & 8. Thought I make it harder to trick you. You are good, getting the rest of the songs correctly.

It is funny that this post was meant to remember our school days where autographs are shared among us. Now we have gone into familiar and forgotten golden oldies which help to bring back those feelings we once had.

The outcome of this would be for us sharing a common passion and to get together for karoeke singing.

Are you ready for some Christmas carols and hymns?

    Dan

  47. ??, Andrew, didn’t know you would actually count in terms of priority.

I saved the best for last, honey, kekekee, so it’s not that you were in the lowest priority, okay?

Again, I reply to you last rite now before my drink is finished, hopefully to have sweet dreams ?, ???. ?????.

Thanks for your kind words. You know what? You are a natural and I totally enjoy singing with you. The clincher is our keys match so we are very comfortable doing duets.

  48. Hi Dan#62,

Whoohoo… so I was right .. you tricked us!
Well, school days was that much,
we did not have email, sms, whatsapp, fb nor skype to broaden our communication, therefore not much happenings unless you hear of certain boys following certain girls home.. got complained and canned by the discipline master infront of the whole class .. OUCH!!!

    Christmas carols & hymns?
Not now .. I’d rather old pop songs ..
then again .. depends on majority lah.

  49. The weekend is here, it’s a holiday today, what are your plan? Go lunching with close friends or sit at home.

Try to identify these favourite songs of mine:

    1. “Why you ramble, no one knows, wild and wind-blown, that’s how you’ve grows, who can cling to a…….”

    2. “…… Some folks they like their wine, some folks love their music, and they sing it all the times……”

    3. “Let’s pretend we are together all alone, I will tell the man to turn down the jukebox way down low…….”

    4. “They said you found someone new, but that won’t stop my loving you………”

    5. “If he bring you happiness, then I wish you all the best………”

    6. “Stay with me don’t go, talk with me just a while……….”

    7. “She knew when I am lonesome, she cry when I am sad….”

    8. “Well the bear will be gentle and wolf will be tame, and the lion shall lie down by the lamb……….”

    9. “Soft as the voice of an angel, breathing a lesson unheard, hope with a gentle persuasion, whispers a comforting word………..”

It’s too early for Christmas carols, next installments!

    Dan

  50. Hi Dan #66
Hmm i think i recognise lyrics of only three titles.
    3. He’ll have to go
    4. Am i that easy to forget
    5. Before the next teardrop falls

Shop & Save supermarts play English oldies. Looks like their target shoppers are the middle aged and baby boomers. Today i heard ‘Hello Darling’and paused from shopping to listen. soooooooooo nice! :)

  51. Hi Dan #66,
Let me join in the fun!
I have heard most of the songs before.

    1 Rambling Rose
    2 Goodnight Irene
    3 He’ll have to go
4 Am i that easy to forget
5 Before the next teardrop falls
    6 I don’t like to sleep alone
7 How can i tell her
8 ??????? doesn’t ring a bell in my head. i think u may hear this if u were to attend a church service!
    9 Whispering Hope

  52. Hi Mike,

If i remember correctly No 8 should be Peace In The Valley by Elvis Presley.

Not sure whether last heard during funeral. :)

    Stay Healthy! Be Happy! :)

  53. Afternoon Johnny,
u r right! It’s Peace in the Valley. i managed to search and find it over Youtube. Beautiful song. And it also reminded me of another great old sentimental song – All for the love of a girl by Johnny Horton.
    Cheers!

  54. Yes Mike, all for the love of a girl. Just googled to hear this song. Very suitable for those who is learning to play the guitar. Just pick, strum, pick, strum. :)

    Syat Healthy! Be Happy! :)

  55. Jassmine,

Good try, if you want to know more, try googling.

Mike, not bad almost got all correct but one. You are right No.8 mostly sang in the church or as Johnny mentioned at the funeral.

“All for the love of a girl’ is also one of my favourite which I usually sang at Kaoreke.

    Here some christmas Jokes:
    1. What did Dracula say at the Christmas party?
    2. Where do snowmen go to dance?
    3. How do you know when there is a snowman in your bed?

    Christmas melody to remember:

    !. “………On a cold winter night, was so deep…….”

  60. Hi Andrew,

Singing more than one song or singing other songs beside English oldies are perfectly ok especially those not so familiar with English songs. Its our own little gathering, who’s there to say its not ok?! We enjoyed ourselves – thanks very much to Susan & Ann for your yummy specialties and of cos .. thanks everyone for your songs, dances & gelek geleks!!

  61. From the East and the West came they,
From the NE too – to karaoke!

Hair let down; reservations flew away
When OUR songs the KJ started to play –
Golden oldies of our youth seduced and more,
Tapping feet took spontaneously to the floor!

Then Chang-e came; the pulsating tempo muted,
Arms, imaginary water sleeves gracefully lifted,
    And Cantonese operas held sway
Till Chang-e left for the milky way.

There was makan too with food a-plenty:
Delicious home cooked beehoon and muah chee,
    Fish cake from Tiong Bahru,
And a box of sweet grapes too.

After so much singing, dancing and good food,
We, fans of golden oldies, dispersed in a happy mood.

Thank you, Pearl, for organizing the K. :)

  62. Hi GT

FRIEND, nice to hear you call me again. This time, I am the one and only one you call, nice!owesome!

Yes, yesterday is a different KOK for me. I tried to far away from the mic and enjoying the others’ singing (but I sing more than one song, sigh. Pearl don’t scold me, I still feel sorry).

?? is you not there, otherwise, I can enjoy your singing or may be we can duet again

Actually, there are 3 songs I like very much, they are:

    ???? (???&??)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MYSVpVBXOo

    ???? (??? & ???)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpwY-oU79As

    Endless love
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVJnMj2oKfo

But I never learn them. The reasons are my voice and my technique not there. Most important, I don’t have the feelingS of the 3 songs.

I hope can duet these three song with you when we meet again? If you promise, I will use my heart to learn them. But when we duet, besides you voice and your technique, can you also give me the feeling of the song “to love and be loved”?

FRIEND, waiting for you to call me again. Haha

  63. ?, Andrew, so touched by your ‘?? is you not there’.

Are you trying to tell me something from the 3 songs that you like? ?????,honey? But ? likey……

Sure, we can do these songs together. ?? feeling ??? ???????,???? ?????? wor.

Okay, I’ll give you whatever feeling you wish. What’s in it for me? Love in return? Ooooh….

All this talk about love reeli brings on the funny, familiar forgotten feeling – all F words, (my favorite) kakakakaa.

  64. Hi GT

Nice to read your comment, especially those cantonese sentences – “?????”, “?? feeling ??? ???????,???? ?????? wor”. Remind me “???????”

????,??????????”, but I am not play-play, ?????, haha. ?, ????????. In order not to disturb Dan’s post and Pearl’s activity, will e-mail you for that. thanks FRIEND.

  65. Yes, Andrew, our personal stuff should be off air as it is not nice to disturb Dan’s post and Pearl’s activity.

Your soup is waiting since ?’????’.
