Wishing all SilverHairsClub members a healthy, wealthy and prosperous Lunar New Year

Very soon, we will be celebrating Lunar New Year.  And, I like to take this opportunity to wish everybody a healthy Snake year.  I believe a number of us are sentimental as we remember the many traditions we used adopt during this Spring festival.

So, enjoy all the eating, drinking, gambling and meeting up with friends and relatives.  Let’s take this occasion to give our best wishes to our fellow friends.  Include some YouTube songs, stories and reflections

    I have 4 wishes:

    First wish:
The SHC and the new website become more exciting and attractive in the year of snake. Honestly speaking, the SHC is a little bit boring now. (actually I should not said that because I am an inactive member)

    Second wish:
This comment can gain me a ticket to login the new SHC site, and not be kicked out

    Third wish:
I can remember most of the active members by the end of year of snake. For so many years in SHC, I always told the others I am an idiot in recognizing people and remembering names. This is only an excuse for my not friendly and lazy characteristic. In the year of snake, I will still be not friendly (as I am low EQ and boring), but I will try hard to get rid of my laziness. In every event I join, I will ask the name of 3 to 4 people (name only, not phone no. or e-mail address, don’t worry) I don’t know. If I have asked your name, and cannot call you the next time we meet, please knock three time in my forehead to help me remember. Of course, must be gentle and not very hard lah.

    Four wish:
All the members ????, ????, ???? (this not important lah)

  2. May I take this opportunity to wish everyone in SHC a Happy and Prosperous Chinese New Year – Excellent Health accompanied with Plenty of Wealth so that we can enjoy to the fullest.

For those of you who are in business and investments, may the God of Fortune knock on your door.

  3. I wish everyone in SHC a Happy, fulfilling & peaceful Chinese Lunar New Year.
May more members, old and new, come forward to contribute new ideas, initiate and organize events for all, to make this Club an exciting and vibrant place , where friendship is natured and treasured and memories to remember when our days get shorter.

  4. Thank you everybody for the well wishes. All of us were borned during a time, when traditions and culture were carried down to us from our parents and grandparents.

Let’s continue to cherish the good old days. I am a Teochew, so Sin3ni1 khuai54lag1, sin3ni1 kian20khan3 to everybody.

  5. To Terence and all SHCians,
My Best Wishes for a Healthy, Happy & Prosperous Lunar New Year.

May I take this opportunity to extend my appreciation and heartfelt thanks to SHC friends who had supported me in my charity bake (Homemade Xmas Fruitcakes)in aid of St Joseph’s Home and Hospice. A total collection of S1260 went to the Home in December 2012. I look forward to your support again this year.

    Luv and Best Wishes, Winnie

  9. To all SHCs
A Happy & Prosperous Chinese New Year

#18 Agnes: Your Peranakan greeting sure brings memories of bygone times: It is actually very Chinese in wishing for longevity… and the Hokkien Peranakans hail from Fujian province, coming to Malacca and Singapore more than 200 years ago.

I shall be in Phuket next week to witness the Old Town Festival and hope to experience Chinese New Year like it was 40 years ago. The Phuket Peranakans come out in their finery dressed in “baju panjang” and the more familiar sarong kebaya, altar tables laid out with offerings, lion dances and firecrackers in a grand three-day parade.

I may well spend more of my remaining years in this old town!

    Kongxi Facai!!

  10. To Terence and all SHC members
have a blessed, happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

#18 To Agnes: Thanks for your peranakan greeting… in reply…kamsiah banyak banyak, semoga semua nonya baba di SHC panjang panjang umor, sehat sehat dan banyak banyak rezeki.

  13. Hi everbody,

It’s nice to take a little time to wish one another a Happy Lunar New Year. This afternoon, looks like it is going to be very quiet for me because it is raining, and I don’t expect any guest. Why must it rain? Can’t we have some snow?

I am going to be contented eating water melon seeds, and listening to Taiwanese radio. Kenneth, I should have joined you in Phuket at the old town. Hope it is not raining there too.

It’s so near to hear from Sekaran, on a Chinese New Year. Thank you for the good wishes.

How am I going to enjoy the rest of the afternoon, if it keeps raining? My folks are out of Singapore. Got to think of something. Cannot be lonely as we get older, and everybody moves out. Maybe we should have a chat.

If you like to chat, now to 6pm, please skype me. My account is swift_squirrel. Good holidays.

  15. Hi guys!

Here’s a suggestion for spending a wet afternoon:
Go watch Quartet: a splendid BBC-produced movie relevant to SHCs, even those concerned about ageing issues. I enjoyed every moment even the sad, moving portions. This movie and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel are two recent shows that appeal to me as a senior… and, I am sure, to most of us.
P.S. This movie is exclusive to Lido theatre only.

  16. Hello Terence and all SHC friends,

Never too late yet to wish every SHCians a very Happy, Healthy and Prosperous Lunar New Year.Today is Chap Go Mei.

Does LNYear celebrations go on for 1 month when children can still collect ang pows past Chap Go Mei? Interesting tradition.

    Geok Suan.

  17. Hi Geok Suan

Good to hear from you… yes, Chinese New Year was celebrated quite differently some forty years ago in Singapore. Chap Goh Mei (the fifteenth day) was as grand as the first: Young maidens would throw oranges for would-be suitors, firecrackers and fireworks fill the air, sumptuous dinners to rival New Year’s Eve. It was a great time!

I had a glimpse of all that recently on my Phuket trip… The Hokkien in Phuket celebrate Chinese New Year with all the old traditions. They also have the sugarcane offering on the ninth day in honour of some historical event… I am ignorant of its origin.
