Do you know of a small restaurant?

Do you know of a small restaurant which meets the following specifications?

  1. The place feels nice to you, has a history or nostalgic, has no white paint on the walls.
  2. Size-wise, it should be small and able to handle 50 people.
  3. Location-wise, it can be located anywhere in Singapore, somewhere in Jurong, Chua Chu Kang, ChinaTown, nearby islands, Batam or Johore.  For a change, the place can be difficult to find.  Can be under the trees, facing the sea or the river.
  4. Price-wise, it’s important not to be expensive. not city prices, less than SGD 10 person Nett, incl tea.
  5. Table & chairs, can be old, clean, comfortable to our bony bottoms. No white table cloth.
  6. Food-wise, can be porridge, tim-sum, soups, surgarfree dishes, no oil all over the bottom of plate, nothing is covered in flour, and where you can recognise the meat without tossing the dish around.
  7. Mood-wise, we can sit down and chat as long as we like.  And, some strong SilverHairs relationship among us.

Do you know of such a place? Is there such a place in Singapore?  We like to go there this year.

  1. Hi Terence

I know this place but it’s in JB. Anjung Warisan in Jalan Petri some 2km from town near the Hyatt, great food, great natural surroundings set in thatched huts and great prices, too! The food is halal so also a bit oily Malay style, but you can have nasi briyani, tom yam, cool desserts and coffee under the trees. See http://www.BestOffer.com.my/anjungwarisan

There are dozens of places to eat in JB including my favourite roti kaya, eggs and coffee. Jalan Trus, just off the customs/immigration has two fantastic places where for S$1.50 you get toast, two huge eggs and delectable local coffee; one set in quaint upstairs surroundings, the other with the mouth-watering Malay foodstall to roll over to after your breakfast. The first shop sells all the favourite Hainan-ese set lunches, too.

We can go anytime of the year; no need to wait for some special occasion. You can take the MRT to Woodlands or Kranji, then the bus for a short ride across. No car levies and no jams: just some lovely coffee, toast with kaya jam!

    When you want to go??

  2. I believe that you can take precautions and also not to become too paranoid about the horror stories you hear or read.

Every day, thousands of JB and Singapore citizens make the causeway trip, either for work or pleasure. Just don’t go into dark, unsafe areas and expose yourself by flaunting expensive jewellery and watches, flashing high-end mobile phones and bulging wallets. Don’t be a target!!

Having said that, you can enjoy your trip to JB or to Malaysia. I think some SHCs are planning a trip to Malacca this coming weekend.

  3. Hi!
I wonder if you people considered cheap for daily makan or some kind of celebration.
There’s a small restaurant at Bishan Park.
The ambience is very relaxing and price — about
    Jack’s place category.

  4. Kenneth, we should keep looking for new places all the time for SHC gatherings. When I am in Singapore, I shall call you and we can go out together then. The website is useful.

Hi Ho, the Bishan place sounds a nice place place too. What is the name and how far from the MRT? Keep this place fresh, and we can go check it out too.

  5. Hi! Terence,
I,ve 4gotten name of restaurant. Will check it when free or when I pass by 2day.
It’s along Ang Mo Kio Ave 1 entrance to the car-park. Hope it’s still there! Went there twice last year. It isn’t near MRT. I’m sure many will like it because it doesn’t seemed that you’re in S’pore when you’re in the place.

  6. Hi everybody,
The restaurant in Bishan Park is named Acacia. It is air-conditioned and surrounded by serene environment. However, the food is not that fantastic and it is also not that cheap.

It is definitely good for meetings, not for food and drinks. haha.

  7. There is a coffee shop at Purvis Street. It is situated behind Raffles Hotel. It’s run by Hainanese who are well known for their chicken rice, mutton soup and western food. I like their pork chop. Meal & drinks below $10. No aircon but place is clean and comfortable and these Hainanese in their 60s or 70s are sincere and friendly.
Terence, do you need the place for monthly meeting or some function and what time would you be holding the function?

  8. There is a newly completed wide space with fishing pond (I think, cos’ I have never been there myself. Only passed by and seen cars and people there enjoying themselves.) at the junction of Yishun Ave I and Ave 2. It is certainly big enough for a gathering. However as for the restaurant, am not sure. Why not check it out.

  9. Yes, Terence

What is the purpose of the place?

Do you need it for SHC gathering and how many persons are you wanting to accomodate?

Also when and is it for dinner, lunch or tea?

Haha! Gives us something to think about, right? Keep our minds turning and brains churning…

  10. Kenneth, I am looking for a place to hold a few of our gatherings. The idea is for these gatherings to be small, and for more close knit discussions.

Not something fixed in stone, although I would think this would be a evening or weekend event.

  11. Hi Terence

Do you like to consider Raffles Marina at Tuas ? It has excellence ambiance facing the sea especially in the evening. The restaurant and cafe and bar are open to non-members.

If possible, you can contact the Club Manager Vincent Lim Tel No. 6869 2200 to see whether something can be worked out for SHC members.

  12. Yes, I agreed Raffles Marina is excellent place for SHC gathering. However, it is really vry far out and we definitely need to take into consideration of those SHC members with no transport there as I don’t recall seeing any feeder bus going there…
