SHC overnight – July 2007

The idea of going out for an overnight outing in Batam, Johor Bahru, Pulau Ubin or at one of Singapore’s 7 islands has been raised a number of times, but we have never kicked it off.  One idea include going to Batam or Bintan for a 2-day overnight with games, health exercises, investment chats, etc.  Another idea was to Johor Bahru to a resort, and include games, eats, interaction, relaxation, retirement discussion.  So far, these are week-ends and supposedly very relaxing.  The aim is to increase interaction opportunities and knowing one another better.   Ok, we now set our minds to going to have one of these events.

Tentative, I have set a date for Sat/Sun 7/8 July 2007.  Please put your ideas or suggestions here.  There is no bad idea.  And, if you can come, simply register your name here.  And, I am on the lookout for SHC overnight Event Organiser too.  Raise your hands please.

If you know of a place, a hotel, a resort, a camp area with food, less than SGD 55 per pax, please share with us all.  Nasi lemak and teh tarik will do. 3 star lodgings or bungalows will do.  Domitories are ok, as long as one dunlop and one pillow per person.  No need for hot water.  One or two cockcroaches no problem. Hopefully, can bring bicycles along.

Let’s start.

There is a suggestion to go Batam, Comment 14.

  1. True Joy…..at my age I think I am all for comfort. Gone are the days when we were young and ‘gung ho’. Better yet, if I can get my breakfast in bed…..Jie

  2. I am game…. no problems with cockroaches, if its only one or two, in someone else’s room i.e., I like the bicycle thing, no need to depend on unreliable public transport, ha! Dear me, how to finance myself…. Hydrabad, Europe and now Batam!

  3. Yes, we can hv the cake & eat it, literally. This is how it goes. Terence will catch the cockroaches and I lightly fry them for breakfasts in bed.

Insofar as financing goes, no problem. Find some time to sell spore’s bak-kwa or bak-kut-teh while in hyderabad and europe, make some money which will be enough to cover more trips than to batam.

  4. The idea sounds workable. I am taking ideas for where to hold the SHC overnight.

If you have been somewhere, and you think it works for us, please share it. We might just decide to hold it there.

  5. Hi Terence,
Thers’s a place in Kukup. They charge RM 75 for a 1 night’s stay. The price includes afternoon tea, BBQ dinner, breakfast plus lunch at the restuarant.Sorry, transport is a different charge–can be arranged!
    What can we do there?
Karaoke, Mahjong, fishing–to name a few.
    Cockroaches? Not in the menu.

Hot water bath? Sorry, you are above a river. Will give u the numbers to call if interested.

Ladies–I think the toilet will be a problem. I think no modern sanitation

  6. Civilised? Hahaha, buay tahan but I honestly like that.

Civilisation began in Mesopotamia with early men living in caves so it shd be very fun to stay with the uncivilised and be uncivilised for a while, without losing our civility for a moment.

Agree that it’s the company that counts so maybe be in the counting only when it comes to the 2nd last ?

  7. Hahaha!

I’ll be bringing my caveman club… for cracking the crab shells of course! We must be civil if we get to eat in company… until the crabs are served!

On a serious note: Some year back, I went to Tanjung Piai which is the southern-most tip of the Asian continent. You proceed down south when you approach the Kukup turnoff and you come to the Tanjung Piai Resort. There are about 15 chalets built over the water, a seafood restaurant, lounge and meeting room. There are activities like farm visits, fire flies and beekeeping & coffee plantations.
I’m not too sure of the condition of the place now so a recce may be needed.

  8. That Tanjung Piai Resort thingy sounds interesting and deserves serious consideration. For those who hv that bit more time after farm visits, catching bees & fire-flies, they might want to mate a bee with a fire-fly and see what comes out of the copulation?

  9. I remembered going to a place like that, I think it was in Indonesia…. chalet and all. We were having great fun, eating all the hot and spicy food, and of course depositing all the crap at the back of the chalet.

Funny thing was, there was a fenced up area in front of the chalet, out at the sea for us to swim in. The high tide would invite us to jump in and swam in the sunlight/moonlight/starlight even lamplight. It was sheer delight until the last day there, when the tide was at its lowest and we were walking the flats looking at things in general. To our horror, we realised that our toilet at the back was open-ended into the sea, and the enclosed swimming area was just in front… yipes, see the connection. None of us dared swam there again!!

To be fair, it was really, really a great holiday then.

  10. Ann said “To be fair, it was really, really a great holiday then” thus ending a pictureque recount of her memorable time spent there. Yes, hv we, for the sake of progress, given up so much that we now hv to leave home for such wonderful experiemce ?

When I was a kiddo, we had a longkang outside my house which was a dumping ground for excreta. Bcos of good food, fish thrived and my neighbour liked to go under the bridge to catch fish.

Once I had a fight with him and when his mom came with a potty to dispose, I told her that her son was under the other end of the bridge when he was not. Haha, it was fun to see shit splashing in the water where he was, courtesy of no other than his mom. Funny, we became the best of friends thereafter.

  11. From Jane Yu:

    Contact: Holiday Bagus
Anita at Tg Katong Complex (near Paya Lebar MRT)
    Tel: 6742 6616

Singaporeans with kids would prefer to stay at Harris Resort. For comfort, I would recommend Holiday Inn Batam which is opp to Harris Resort. Holiday Inn charged $65 per person for a 2-bedroom suite (inclusive of ferry transfer and a buffet breakfast). The ferry will depart at Harbour Front for Batam Waterfront Terminal. The hotel provides shuttle service to town. Ladies may have their massage at Mustika Ratu, the “biggest” spa in Batam.

Holiday Bagus is closed on sundays.

  12. Hi Rosalind, have not explored Kukup yet. But, we shall keep this for another occasion.

Hi Jane, we have contacted Holiday Bagus. Seems there is a rate for Batam view. Let’s see how this goes. Comments needed.
