  1. Hi Terence,

Tuesdays are fine for me. Please include Thomas and myself for the afternoon session. How about the lobby lounge at Carlton Hotel/Bras Basah? Just a thought.

    Regards, Edwin Chen

  2. Book me.

What happens if you are half working/half retired. Sometimes.

Anywhere is good. So long as we don’t have to marathon to piss.

What about near the beach. You can’t miss…..

  3. Hi Terence,

What about Captain’s Cabin? Capt. Beer will be very happy to provide deep fried fresh vege ‘Pakora’, sauce & chutney (home Made), bread and cold drinks at S$5.0 per SHClubbers from 1700 to 2000 hrs. He can accomodate about 30 clubbers in his day room, dinning room, private bar and garden.

    Cheers!

  4. Hi Terence,

Another venue worth considering,is the MYMCA coffee house along Stevens Road. Air-conditioned comfort,drinks/food prices very reasonable. Private section available if you have a minimum of 30 persons. Sorry, no beer! Please check their website.

    Cheers, Edwin Chen

  5. Hi KT,

A good spot near the beach is the Ski Club Chinese Restaurant(former swimming lagoon)along the EC park. It has a roof top garden too! Check it out! No pissing problems, plenty of toilets!

    Cheers,Edwin Chen

  6. Edwin,

Can you let us know which Thomas you are referring to?

Lounge at Carlton Hotel, hmm. We have to look at it, as normally we do not hold gatherings at drink joints. But, but, we should consider it sometime. Good thought though.

    Terence Seah

  7. Kaushal, we need to look for a place which can take 70 people, at least. No food needed, only some hot and cold beverages. Which place are you referring to? We would take note.

Edwin, we would take note of the YMCA and the Ski club.

  8. Hi Terence,

Having read about your requirements, I have been checking on venues when an opportunity comes by whilst on my music engagements.

The MYMCA coffee house at Stevens Road offers good ambience, pricing and other meeting facilities where required. The private section alone can easily hold 100 persons comfortably even with buffet style food arrangements. No beer.

The Ski Club is a little spartan in decor layout. I can understand this, what with people walking in and out sometimes from the swimming lagoon. Beer is available.

Perhaps, you check them out and keep these venues in your little note book for future use.

    Cheers, Edwin Chen

  9. Hi Terence,

Sorry, its Thomas Ong a new SHC member. He did us a favour by assisting in the transport of my equipment for the beer party.

The Carlton Hotel lobby lounge is a little quiet on weekday afternoons and has a separated cosy corner for private gatherings but maybe not for our intended purpose at this point. Anyway, check it out.

    Cheers, Edwin Chen

  10. Hi Terence,

Pls include me in Sep gathering. My work with the children that day ends at 4:30 p.m. Any problem if I get to venue sometime in between first and second sessions. Thanks and regards.

    June Chin

  11. Terence, very the aslamak leh.

According to the 2 time periods set, retired adults wont be able to join working adults so is there smthg too adult for overaged adults ?

Perhaps, open it to all SHCians, from 1530 to 2000 hours, so no adult will be curious what another adult get to do, see or perform…….

  12. Hi Terence,

I am refering to Captain’s Cabin at 16 Lichfield Road at Serangoon Garden, which also happens to be my ‘Home Sweet Home’. Even if Capt. Beer throws open his Bed Rooms and WC to some ‘Desparate SHClubbers’, he can not accommodate 70 Clubbers.
    Cheers!

  13. Hi Terence,

I had kopi & kaya toast at the 4th level food court at the Amara Hotel this morning. Not very crowded. It appears alright for your 70 pax gathering.

    Check it out!
    Edwin Chen

  14. Tim,

Everybody is welcome to join either group. This is the first time, we have organised it this way. Keep the fun going. And, get to meet others as well.

    Cheers.

  15. Hi Edwin

I was there with Ah Nee during lunch and it’s packed. Guess by late afternoon or evening maybe less crowded. Can give it a thought, but doubt that place is suitable for our kind of gathering.

  16. “Time: 1530 – 1730 hrs (Retired SilverHairs). 1800 – 2000 hrs (Still working SilverHairs)”.

Let me work overnite and over many nites to make another meaning out of it or get some clues from the birds when they talk………

  17. You are right Susan, Amara food court at 4th level at Amara Hotel are not suitable for the SHC gathering. Its a public place, no privacy and may be noisy too. No need to consider……

    Ah Nee

  18. Hi Susan/Ah Nee,

I thought nobody’s checking for suitable venues! Now that I have awaken you ladies, with an off beat place, could we have some suggestions, please?

Terence started with joints along either Pickering Street or Robinson Road. Any to explore and add?

    Cheers, Edwin Chen

  19. Hi Terence

It seems some will be lost in space, the friends (retired Silverhairs) in one section, and the other friends (Still working Silverhairs) in another section, alamak, we have to solve the jig-saw puzzles, or whether to cross the Berlin wall to meet our friends, leh.

    Ronlai

  20. hi Terence
Pls ‘un-register’ me…Susan registered for me, but i think she forgot its fasting mth
    Susan..thanks for remembering me :)
Edwin..u seem to love kopi & kaya toast…last time u told us, Siglap Kopitiam, now Amara..u go kaya-kaya everywhere,u must be orang kaya! hehehe :)

  21. Hi Norlinda,

I pick this love for things local when abroad. So, whenever I am back in my “kampung”, I always move around and go for everything local! My offer is still on, call me for breakfast… Shenton Way??

    Cheers, Edwin Chen

  22. Hi Ron Lai,

Do you see a Berlin wall? I don’t think Terence wishes to create such a wall. Quite to the contrary, I think it is a good idea for the non-working members to come in earlier, have a casual cuppa and get the conversations going. When the working crowd comes in,I think it would just mingle and blend in quite naturally. I don’t think we will see a situation where the earlier bunch would just stand up and make an exit.

    Cheers, Edwin Chen

  23. Insofar as Terence is concerned, it’s never one wall but walls….that’s him.

I know him decades ago when he was still a toothless toddler when he was already very stubborn, blocking the walls van from moving unless his small brudder me bought him an ice cream.

Well, altho the 2 time slots clearly mean what they meant, no use trying to change Terence who more than make up with his forbearance.

  24. Hi Terence

Surprise to see my name in the list, sorry am not able to attend, as I have already booked de VIRGO trip for 6D5N on 16th Sept to 21st Sept to Bangkok and Hua Hin, as I am taking advantage of the “1 for 1” offer, by Star Cruise.

    CHEERS

    Ronlai

  25. Hi everybody,

Tim is quite right, these two timings look like creating walls, not Ice-cream walls. Actually, it is intended so, for 2 reasons.

    1. Many of you know, we have not been successful finding a big enough place to hold the size of our gathering. True, it’s nice to meet everyone at the same time, at least once a mth. That’s why we always compromise on a late afternn.

    2. There are many nice lovely places, quiet clubs and relaxing cafes. We can use these places with good discount rates and at a more leisurely pace. But, the “Still working” cannot go, while the “Retired Silverhairs” wonder why gatherings must be in town with quiet cafes.

Good problem. Hope you don’t see me as stubborn. I am open to ideas and suggestions.

    Terence Seah

  26. Hi Terence,

At 2.30 AM you are STILL Working on the SHC website and NOT sleeping.

Kudos to you but adequate sleep is important to “flush” out all the harmful toxins from our body during sleep.

    Take GOOD care,
    Steven Chan

  27. Hi Terence,

pls put my name down for the 2nd session but I will be a little late as I work till 6pm.

    Many thanks.

    Warmest Regards
    Caroline Gee

  28. Hi Terence,

If the main obstacle is accomodating the crowd of 70+ SHC members and the gist of the meet is a talk shop, why not book a conference room at YWCA Fort Canning? or maybe at a nearby CC. We could arrange for tea & coffee to be included and then comfortably forget about dividing our members into two sessions.

    Regards, Edwin Chen

  29. Hi Terence,

Thomas Ong, our new member, suggested Raffles Town Club. Must give him early notice for booking arrangements though.

    Cheers, Edwin Chen

  30. Heeee, Edwin, we’re a very elastic people so if the cost is low, optional or non existent, attendance will stretch as far as the north pole but when cost becomes a not small consideration (such as if we book a conference room serving tea tarik/kopi anand etc) then the traffic can head south esp when it’s just meeting to chat, mingle & while away time.

Btw, look forward to watching you do yr 1-man band again, hopefully earlier than SHC concert.

  31. Tim, my dear Sage,

It appears that you understood my every move on the board. You must be pretty good at Chess? Sorry, no typo error again.

Expensive venue, not very popular with the general membership. Cheap2 places quite hard to find. Now I know why poor Terence has to divide … the group!

Hopefully not in the manner of the early colonial Brits of divide and rule, ending up with a Pakistan & India locking horns!!

    Have fun! Edwin Chen

  32. Edwin dear,

I can feel and am touched by yr kind regards but am also sagged by the sage placed on my back so you being my dearie, how?

In Chinese chess, I always sent my elephant across River Chu when I decided it was time to go home.

As silverhairs, we hv no choice but to plan for the future so we do stretch the dollar a bit more which of cos can pose a problem for Terence in choosing a suitable venue.

But we’ll reward him with Walls ice cream, and he likes the donald duck pattern best.

Well, if there’s only 1 time zone closing then it wont be as confusing but then again Terence is Terence…….love him, loath him & not forgetting he loves ice cream………Walls ice cream and must be donald duck………..

  33. Hi Terence,

Pls include me for the 2nd session and will be a bit late bcos i finish work at 6pm. This being my 1st time attending monthly gathering, so looking forward to meeting more shc members.
    Thanks! veronlee

  34. Hi Terence & friends,

Just to let you know, I found a teh tarek stall at China Square awhile ago. Must be old news to you but never mind, it’s for sharing. Nostalgic and pretty authentic!

Tried to talk shop with the boss of a bistro nearby for the use of his place by SHC. When I told him the expected total revenue, the man’s face was devastated!”Mati lah”, he looked nowhere beyond my cup of half finished tea!

    Cheers, Edwin Chen

  35. Hi Terence
As I am working till 6pm prob cannot attend this session. If its weekend will be great. Anyhow let us c where the venue is.I hope to meet up with you all.

    Thanks and rgrds
    Jane

  36. Hi Terence,

Do include me in the 2nd session, knock off only at 5.30 pm, should be able to make it. Would like to meet up with all the interesting ‘girls & boys’.

    Thank you, until then Cheers!!!!

  37. Hi Terence,

Count me in. I am checking out a place at the Plaza which have capacity up to 100 pax. Let me know whether you need the PA system and what other requirements.

  38. hi terence

no excuse this time – the time is great. i’m no morning man, to be honest! looking forward to meeting all of you and hopefully stay relevant.

    cheers, life should be fun!

  39. Hi Terence,

Just a reminder. At last month’s meeting, I thought someone mentioned about donating a small portable PA system for future SHC monthly meetings. Has it been handed over?

    Edwin Chen

  40. Hi Edwin,

The microphone offer is appreciated and would be useful. However, for the moment, I have asked for the gift to be KIV’d, until such a time as we can find new venues which would allow use of the mic. Many of the places we go to, do not permit use of microphones.

    Terence

  41. Hi Terence,

In my mind, it is difficult to address a gathering of 30 or more people comfortably without the help of an amplification system. As the SHC is growing in numbers, steadily but surely, I guess when deciding on a venue for these monthly meetings, due consideration must be given to this aspect.

Obviously, if meets are held at rather opened public places, miking is out! However. I still think that meets should be held at venues where there is a little privacy.

    Edwin Chen

  42. Edwin,

Yes, I agree on the privacy side. But, I have no intention of charging a fix fee for entrance, unless it is an adhoc or special event. Monthly event should dispense with too much organisation. Can come, come. Cannot come, there is always another time.

I am hoping that will make the SHC monthly gatherings flexible.

    I am open to ideas.

    Terence Seah

  43. With a mic, it wd be like talking down and the rest will hv to sit up & keep very quiet, and dozing off after a while.

Without a mic, you talk, I talk, he talks, she talks, everybody talks and so no one sleeps which also practises the true spirit of a democractic SHC founded on justice & equality so as to achieve happiness & prosperity for our………

The only person who can hv a valid complaint is the cafe operator…….so much sound & noise but so little business, like that, how to make enough money to live till 90?

  44. Hi Tim,

Thank you for your advice. You should have mentioned this earlier then we will have not taken the trouble to source for a venue. Any HDB void deck or car-park will do! Drinks? BYO !! So simple!

    Cheers, Edwin Chen

  45. Hi Terrence

Please count me in for the 2nd session of this mth gathering as I knock off at 6pm.

    Thank you and warm regards.

    Cheers, Eyvonne Chew

  46. Hi Terence

It’s really fantastic to know that there are still people like yourgoodself pursuing such a great social service like this. Fully agreee with your superflexi approach – can come, come. Cannot come, there’s always another time. Life is already too regimented, let’s not aggravate it! SHC is for relaxing and unwinding.

    Keep smiling!

  47. Can we have a venue where we can serve our own Banrie special “Carnation Black” and hot dogs. To the music stains of “Casablanca” from Edwin Kool and Gang.

    Play it again, sam.

  48. Hi Terence

Count me in for the earlier session and, if time and crowd permits, to stay on into the second half. Just don’t want to miss the fortunate ones who still have their jobs…

    Kenneth

  49. Edwin, any hdb void deck wont do lah…….some got dong dong chiang one hor and imagine you & I jostling for space with the lum-mo-lor who clearly has 1 advantage over us – he carries a sword.

But fret not that yr efforts might hv gone to waste – no, not at all, The ideas tossed up may make probable venues for other gatherings such as Terence’s mother-in-law’s birthday party.

  50. Hi Terrence, I should be able to make it for the first session as I have a class at 7.30pm that day. Looking forward to meeting some if not all of the members. :-)

  51. Hi Tim,

Strange isn’t, it’s so common to have these crazy banging of the gongs, clashing of cymbals at void decks. Terribly, annoying! Sometimes, this “lum mo loh” with his eyes half closed humming and singing his off beat songs totally out of tune. And slyly, would open his eyes when a pretty lass passes by! After his performance, he took off his yellow robe to reveal a black Hard Rock Cafe’s dragon T-shirt underneath and a pair of corduroy jeans. With a gold Rolex watch and gold chains/bangles to match. Sorry, no gold teeth!!

By the way, his sword is made of cheap soft wood, I bought one for $4.50 only in china town. Used it for Tai Chi sword practice and it broke into two!Obviously, china made!

So much now for our beloved first world country’s encounter with blatant age old chinese superstitions!

    Edwin Chen

  52. Yes, Edwin, it is strange.

While it shd be easy to hoodwink the dead, the living shd be a lot more questioning but I suppose they are kept busy performing the mournings for neighbours to see than to care 2-hoots what the supposed professionals do so long as rgey do it culturally correct like wearing the yellow robes and not a harley davison leather jacket.

Well, live & let live so I guess everyone is happy with the status quo which allows some gaming to take place like mahjong & blackjack at no risk of a police raid……..

  53. Edwin,

I think you are very rude to make fun of other religion and beliefs.

To each his own. You have your faith, we have ours. Dont pass comments on the forum page.

I dont find the sound of gongs and cymbals annoying. However, its your bragging and your gb I find annoying.

  54. Oooops, sorie, Caroline, I started it and yes, it does seem unkind for me to be seen as less than kind to those who observe & practise their rituals……….

Must crouch and be the couch for you to stand on to sing Love Potion No. 9 liao……….

  55. Apologies accepted Tim

Its just that I have reading the posting and keeping mum for a long time. I just wanted to see how far he will go and I think this time he has crossed his boundaries.

I am usually a very tolerant person but when someone steps on my toes, he will be sorry.

This is a very sensitive topic and we should by all means avoid this kind of confrontation. But some people just enjoy poking fun at others just for some cheap thrills or he has other things on his agenda.

Some people behave like some insecure old man, bragging and talking nonsense so as to feel superior.

Saying coconut tree loves Shirley. What kind of nonsense.

Whatever it is, I rest my case unless I am provoked to say more.

  56. Haha, Caroline, I think I know you well enough so I did what I did for you and you only hor….others dont copy-cat huh bcos Caroline is special to me, ok.

Yes, even without mentioning religion, I do acknowledge that the sensitivity test has been breached, which therefore brings to mind what OB markers are……..what is taboo shd be read in context, not at the mere sighting of a word.

My thoughts for Edwin changed after meeting him at the Captain’s tavern. He too has the substance to back him up and might have, like many of us, fluffed his opportunities in his heydays but that wont take away his strengths.

Heee, get to know him and many will fall for him.

  57. Caroline Gee,

I don’t think its rudeness when an expressed fact is a fact. Nothing more or nothing less. No religion is mentioned here. What Tim & I were talking was a roadshow, “void deck show”?, if you will.

    Edwin Chen

  58. What’s banging in the gong. Tea break?

OK. Boys and girls. Have a cuppa of Carnation Black. Let the dopamine rush fix things for you.

Now. isn’t that better. Hormones in harmony.

  59. Yew Kong,

No insults were thrown! Just a mentioned of a fact only. Every individual has a right to express what was witnessed. No religious debate was intented.

    Edwin Chen

  60. I dont see why my comment #76 shd still be awaiting moderation. It’s a simple stark msg to read.

Edwin & I had engaged ourselves in a certain frequency, playful with our comments on what we see but that, I concede, wd not give me the licence to incense anyone embracing a certain faith or belief.

Thus even if there was the slightest hint of a breach, and I do see the infraction myself, I hv no qualms letting it go and pursue the joke no more.

  61. To Edwin and Tim
Let me put it to you such ritual are neither road show nor void deck show and they are not meant to show to the neighbours. As I am typing this, my fingers are trembling with anger and pain. You see, I have lost my beloved sis-in-law just over a week ago and my brother’s family had engaged this ritual to be performed during the funeral. All the family wanted was for an easier journey for the deceased. Try and understand the purpose of why things are done and not just way things appear before your eyes. Have tolerance and emphathy. Thank you.

  62. Cheng, you & yr brother’s family hv my unreserved sympathy and empathy but if you think anger is also yr mood & prerogative, it too is mine.

Whether some wakes are put up to show & impress neighbours cant be your call as much as it’s not to say that yr loved one’s funeral was.

I have let this matter past but if you wd like to take it up, I am ready.

  63. Dear Cheng,

I am deeply sorry to hear of the demise of your sister-in-law and certainly, I can also speak for Tim and myself that we harbour no disrespect for your religion or inter alia practices. Kindly rest assured.

Fact is, it all started with our pranking of what we sighted during those periods of excessive burnings around the HDB neighbourhod and one joke led uncontrolably to another.

I am sure Tim and myself, have no intentions of hurting another one, especially those within our own close SHC midst.

Please accept our heartfelt apologies and also condolences for the breaved family.

    Edwin Chen

  64. Hi Cheng/Tim/Edwin,

Cheng, V. sorry to hear that your beloved sis-in-law has passed away a week ago.
My Sympathies to the bereaved family.

At times like this one has to be MORE SENSITIVE to the feelings of others who are suffering at the LOSS of their loved ones.

I felt very SAD and DEPRESSED when both my beloved parents have passed away.

If only I could spent MORE of my time with them when they were around in Kuala Lumpur.

    Steven Chan

  65. Steven, you can never enthralled me enough with yr idiocy and this time when you say so cleverly that “………sis-in-law has passed away a week ago…at times like this one has to be MORE SENSITIVE to the feelings of others………”

Why shed yr croc tears now when you cd hv cried a river at the wake with yr clairvoyance?

That’s why I call you the champ and hv left you to wallow with yr kind till you try me.

  66. Hi Tim Liu,

It is time that you should come out from the closet as hinted by Terence and write more of your own profile than to write about others.

You are as MYSTERIOUS as the “Phantom of the Opera” and yet as MISCHIEVIOUS as Chucky, the Rag Doll.

Or are you a guy with a “SPLIT” personality, the kind and serious or the UNkind and Vindictive trampling down everyone’s comments with no apparent reason.

Or just a Devil in Disguise ?

Regards and have a good weekend ahead,

    Steven Chan

  67. Steven, I am the devil in disguise but you’re a true blue devil no matter how you disguise, and a top notch idiot to boot, cutting & pasting here the piece which won you the nobel prize in literature for nincompoods.

Perhaps, you wanna do smthg else than polishing every apple and carrying every ball you can find, like telling us why you left tea cheering and come here to offer yr dogs for walks?

Will that bring more tears to yr eyes than crying another death in prediction?

    Let’s wait in bated breath……..

  68. Hi Tim Liu,

Only a “NINCOMPOOP” or an idiot for that matter would have say something like this:-

Caroline Gee Wrote to you …..

Tim wrote…Saying coconut tree LOVES Shirley.

What kind of NONSENSEE is that ?

Its just that I have been reading the posting and keeping MUM for a long time.

I just wanted to see HOWE FAR he will go and I think this time he has crossed his boundaries.

But some people just enjoy poking fun at others just for some cheap thrills or he has other things on his agenda.

Some people with LOW SELF ESTEEM behave like some INSECURE old man, BRAGGING and talking nonsense so as to feel superior.

People with higher Self Esteem are MORE CULTURED,knowing what to say at the right moment and appropriate place.

Whatever it is, I rest my case unless I am provoked to say more.

    Got it,SAVE my Breath
Cut and Paste, Ga yim Ga chol,
    Steven Chan

  69. Tim cool it. Actually I dont know what Steven is trying to say or do.

Dont be upset. You know my advice, just say your piece and ignore what comes after and move on and use your energy for better things.

Thats why I have put my point across and I close my case.

  70. My dear friends,

Fisrst of all this post is meant for the gathering on the 18th of Sept. But yet i can see people who have such ”Impressive Profile” posting here maj=king fun of other people’e religion. He is supposedly a ”religious person” who works/helps out in a religious organisation, but yet do not have the simple courtesy to respect someone’s else belief and practices.

I wonder if he ever take a look at himself before he makes such uncalled for remarks about someone who is going through a tough time.

I am really disappointed that there are such remebers here….

  71. I joined SHC with much enthusiasm and hope of forming some long lasting friendships, but am now not quite sure how things are going to turn out. Jokes are enjoyable as long as they are not offensive. Perhaps those of you who wish to crack jokes, that may be viewed as offensive, should do so in their own private emails, not openly like this.
Since apologies have been made, I think everyone should move on and get on with SHC matters as I am fast losing my enchantment with the club after what had transpired.
I thought we were all here to make and be friends???

  72. Hi Mary

I share the same sentiment as you. Do not be discouraged. Am sure you can find some true
friends at SHC, some time some where….

    Good luck.

  73. wahpiangz,Mary, dun be like dat le.. Same sentiment as Susan, I am very sure that there are plentiful of true frens here la… not 4geting me mah.. rite?? Hope 2c u around.. dun lose hope..ok :)

  74. I have just arrived in JeonJu, some 4 hours from Seoul Incheon airport. This is a nice small and economically vibrant city. Usually in late December, there is plenty of snow here, and I am usually here at about this time.

Korea is one of the most highly connected countries in the world. Almost every household is internet connected. However, it does not work too well when it comes to GSM networks. So, during the whole day, I am unable to read any Post or comments.

Well, I have now read through most of what comes in during today. Thre is not too much I would say on this thread, except that, indeed, some comments have disappointed other SilverHairs. To let matters settle, please stay off this thread for a few days.

Please note the rules of the club. If not, I would have to take out the scotch tape or the ruler. And, one day, I shall tell you a story about what I said some 25 years ago to a young lady, and I regret it till this very day.

The good thing is we are all over 45. And, we are more understanding than when we were younger. So, no need to make matters more complicated.

Enjoy the fun of the SilverHairsClub. It was set up with the intention of providing a platform to meet new and more friends.

    Terence Seah

  75. Hi Suzhang and Dolly,
I know I came out pretty strong about what was going on, but I’ve said my piece and am still determined to find friends here. So, pleased to make your acquaintance and I hope to meet you one day.

    Cheers!

  76. Hi Nathan and Mary,

Yes, I share your sentiments. However, like I said, it was the last straw that made me speak up otherwise I am happy just to enjoy reading what were written in the forum.

I agree with Susan and Dolly. Do not be discouraged as there are many fine people in SHC who are here to make new friends and spend our time meaningfully. I have made many firm and caring friends here. Otherwise I would have been clueless as to where to make new and good friends.

Lets put all the unhappy things behind us and move on to enjoy all the activities lined up for us. Hope to meet up with you all at coming events.

    Cheers!

    Warmest Regards
    Caroline Gee

  77. Good Morning, Mary

Don’t be discouraged, you will find truth, sincere, caring friends here that share healthy hobbies, interests and meaningful fellowship time.

    Cheers!

  78. I made the digress and will wrap it up in perspective.

Credit to Edwin for not only showing enthusiasm but actual solid efforts to search & find good alternative venues for SHC gatherings altho, relatively new, he wasnt aware of cost as an important consideration.

Probably exasperated bcos jibes were shown more clearly than appreciation, he thought of the hdb void decks which to my mind are usually taken up for wakes.

In our next exchanges, we wrote in our usual style, what we saw without malice. But when Caroline entered with her objections, I demurred and, recalling her profile, realised that I had inadvertently woven myself, taking Edwin with me, a web of entanglements that can turn untidy. So I took the next opportunity to send regrets.

That shd hv ended the fray but 2 silly free loaders thot of jumping in….haha, they shd hv chosen the beanpole’s bandwagon where in there, he will apologise for anythg to anyone for no rhyme or reason.

Yes, in SHC we can find new & more friends.

But it’s another thing if we need to wait until at least 45 years old to come to SHC and not the world at large to look for friends, then we must hv a problem.

So while be happy enjoying friendship, be easy if some friends turn fiends.

Looking into the crystal ball, I see that 1 day SHC will settle down to a core group – smaller than the ambitious 3,000 & counting, but enough to really kick off with blue helmet projects managed by dedicated folks who are ready to say I am here….accountants, doctors, foremen, cleaners who, with strengths in their areas of expertise, will shine with that 1 genuine spark.

  79. Heee, Mary, me so bad…the biggest of fiends and you still dare to be my friend meh?

Seriously, was having a good time last nite with my kid, munching chicken wings, quite happy that her lowest score was 92.5……..ooops, did a proud father brag worse than a brat?

  80. Aiyah Tim, you not a fiend lah. Frankly, I myself have sometimes cracked “sensitive” jokes too but one has to be mindful where it’s done. I rather enjoyed your chitchats and jokes so keep it up.
Wah, 92.5! What level? Must be a braniac.
Well, I gotta vamoose. Going for lunch and a show with an old friend, who is off from work today. I do have friends you know, but very few, so need to widen my horizon a little.
I will be back, like Arnie said.
    See ya all later.:-)

  81. Haha, thanks, Mary,

    Enjoy yr lunch & show.

While you cant ta pou the show, think you can do so for the lunch and ease my wait for dinner usually after 11 p.m..

  82. Have just read some of the latest postings here.
It is sad that the situation has turned quite unpleasant over some comments about religious rites. As a multi-religious society we need to be sensitive and respect each other’s beliefs and that includes religious rites as well. Every religion has prayers for the dead because the dead cannot pray for themselves anymore. So spare a thought and a prayer for the departed. Each religion has a form of prayer rituals and we need to acknowledge this and have some reverence for them. A joke on any such ritual will be in poor taste to anyone who reads the blog.

All said, let’s move on. After all we are in SHC to meet and make new friends and not otherwise. Hey, this is supposed to be a Sept Gathering post. But I just wanted to have my say.

    Cheers ………Philip

  83. Philip, what you hv said has been said ad nauseum. Glad that you realise that this thread is abt September Gathering and quickly said no more……….

  84. June, you siao liao huh?

I am busy repelling those who come in to throw stones with my cannon balls, and here you blur blur gelek gelek in with truck loads of kayu?

Btw, in Korean it’s Kim __nam 36.. Forget abt watching Korean serial, watch only this Korean senor……..suave, handsome and a cash-cow in the grooming.

  85. hi Terence…I was waiting for u to appear to save our ‘sinking’ boat!…phew!..at last u r the saviour…
& credit must go to Mary Chan too..
well…don worry Mary, u will find good frens here…I wanna be yr fren, hopefully we’ll meet up someday..
As u know, all members are above 45yrs old…some gets real ‘cranky’ & get carried away..hahaha…sori, its just a joke! :)

  86. Eat less, exercise more so reduce excess body mass and with weight lighter chances of any ship sinking with you in it are reduced but problem is, can you do it?

Serious, it’s not a joke…..dont trust me, trust the mirro, dont hate it.

  87. Hi Tim, sorry lah, didn’t tar pow anything for you. May be next time ;-P
The movie was soso. 881, a local production by Raintree. Quite good actually, but I think I’ve had my fill of “ker tai” songs and Hokkien songs. In fact this is the first time I’ve actually listened to them and of course read the subtitles to understand the lyrics. For corny entertainment value, I will give it 2 and a half popcorns out of 5. The other popcorns helped to keep me awake through some parts, hehe.

  88. Its not a problem…im loving it!now, whose ship sinking…yours or mine??…dont hate me!
Ooopps!..sori this is Sept Gathering post…lets move on….

  89. Anyhesayo June Lim (or ahjumonim)

It’s “Ajah ajah” for “Jia You” in Korean. “Tay han-minku tada tadada”. I love K-drama too. Want to go Korea with me in Dec? Night skiing and outdoor hot spring spa in winter? Real Korean food for one week? So far, Margaret Tian and Andrew Yeung are interested to come along. You want?

  90. Hi Tim….my JiaYOu or Ajah Ajah means…let’s move on lah :-)) not fight on :-)

Hi Lily…I wanna go to Korea again but not this year. Was there last Oct. And this year, was in China for a week in Feb, and next month going to Canada for holiday. Better save some :-)). Was in Korea in Dec 10 yrs ago. First time see snow…so so happy, so suakoo :-))) That time things were cheap. Wow last Oct, didn’t buy much….very lovely clothes, bags and all but so expensive!!!

  91. Hi Terence, I think I will put in my 2 cents worth of a suggestion. What about the Asian Civilization Museum at Empress Place? They have large colonial style rooms but other than that, I don’t know how much they cost, but I think they do serve tea and coffee. I’ve been to a function there once. How costly or cheap I’m not sure. It’s all relative isn’t it? Besides, it’s central and quite private. Perhaps worth looking into?

  92. Mary, no tar pow for me, tim angry liao (pouting…)

Seriously, talking abt subtitles, try figure out what this English translation is “Since old hero who never died? Retain take pill heart shine sweat green”

Without waiting for Terence to ask him to raise his hands, Wen Tian Siang too is already waving his hands furiously in protest that his last words “Zi gu ying xiong shui wu si? Liu qu tan xin chow han ching” have become a joke….heee, 1 popcorn will appease Terence but even 5 popcorns wont appease Wen.

Norlinda, yr question is just too elementary but I’ll still answer it.

Ask : whose ship sinking…yours or mine??
Ans : look at the mirror first, not the ship…….the ship with the fatter one in it sinks first.

You move on, I wont give chase (altho lighter, i can with 1 leg hop to overtake you……..anytime)

And of cos, akito hapkito lolilosor ajinomoto, heee, June, whether it’s Ajah Ajah or Agar Agar still it’s semua pun masuk tong sumpah….. How you move, which part of you want to start moving first, I’ll follow…..am ready, are you?

Btw, if next year you move on to K, can I follow?

  93. The Sept gathering is confirmed at Han’s cafe and Cake house, #01-03 Great Eastern Centre (near China Square).

There is No topic. No topic, or Hans will kick us out. Let’s try this mode of gathering. The earlier session for retired SilverHairs and the latter session for still-working SilverHairs.

Please get a sticky label from Cheng or Jie when you arrive. You need to write your name on the sticky label.

    Event organiser: Terence Seah

  94. Terence,

Unless we have more freeloaders than cheng-kays, why will Hans kick us out if there is a topic?

That Han’s place is empty anyway at the time.

Its easy to make them look up to us. Let Steven negotiate with the manager.

  95. Hi KT, everybody,

When we last held the SHC gathering at Hans, the Hans management objected to SHC having talks there. They have counter-offered us packages of $8 per person, which includes a drink and some pastries. I did not find this acceptable, in view of the varied members taste. Flexibility of cost and member participation.

The good thing about Hans@Great Eastern is the space, its quietness at times, the varied drinks and food and proximity to MRT statiion.

There are two key reasons why I have decided to hold this Sept gathering here. first, no space rental. The other consideration is the menu should be flexibility. We should avoid catering to food and drinks, and instead leave it to the venue.

I am not sure which Steven you are referring to, but if Steven or other SilverHairs can talk with the Hans management and negotiate, this would be a great. We should have our SHC monthy gathering cater to 200 persons per gathering, if there is no violent objection to Hans or any semilar venue.

As long as no talks and no blocking of space, Hans would not object.

    Terence Seah

  96. I presume you are referring to me? Gingko actually suggested I lifted my “skirt” a little to distract the security guard, not my shirt. Haha. Anyway, the people at Han’s would probably throw me out when they see my knobbly knees, hehe.

  97. Oi KT, me Joy, not Jie. Since your comment came after mine, I suppose you were addressing me?

But I know Jie too. She is a very nice lady. At my first monthly meeting, I was lost and alone and she took me under her wings. I was so grateful.

  98. KY, Joy,

Great humour on this Sunday morning. Height and skirts. I am here in Bangkok listening to English music on a cool quiet Sunday morning. Had my coffee, ate 2 star fruits and tapioca thai breakfast.

See all of us on Sept 18.

  99. Chan Mary Chan,

If you wish, you could do both…heehee; but, how are we going to conduct the “meeting” with all this commotion going on?

If Han’s throw you out, I’ll be at the entrance to catch you. That’s why I must go for my badminton session this evening…to keep my hand muscles strong.

  100. Alamak Mary,

You have forgotten this is your version… No oy oy or joget joget, but ooohla ooohla, and waggle, wiggle, wriggle, jiggle, joggle, shake, shake, shake…

Better get off this thread before Terence splash hot coffee and throw rock tapioca at us…

    Terence, enjoy your Sunday morning!

  101. Back again. Sorry.

Typed Type “Jie for “Joy” and shirt” for “skirt” wrong. Forgot Sirley’s neckline plunger too. Except she’s too busy at her Hotdog Wagon @ Hougang.

So Terence here’s the lineup for your Negotiating Team A.

I will be coach and strategist. Steven, Joy are alternate chief negotiators with Shirley in the reserve.

    Here’s the playoff strategy.

Steven – If Hans field a mangeress about 5ft plus, you head the talks. Remember to tower over her and discuss in full view of customers in the middle of the room. Wear your National Day red T-shirt and ask her loudly what Hans is doing for the country in terms of the seniors in line with PM’s speech. If she says anything that we don’t want to hear, pretend to be hard of hearing. Don’t let her bring a ladder. If Hans offer sitdown negotiations with free drinks. All 3000 odd SHC members sit down together. Quickly!

Joy (Shirley in the wings) – Other than a skirt, you guys take the field. Prepare for marathon talks. Wear a long skirt and roll up slow;y at the ankle.

Don’t worry at knee level. In Jewel in the Palace, the King inadvertently stole a glimpse of the heroine’s ankle and nearly blew an orgasm. From ancient times in many cultures, the ankle is the sexiest and most suggestive part. Anything further, you go to jail and no pass go.

  102. Hi Wong KT,

It is VERY GOOD to see you so ACTIVELY ENGAGED and adding HUMOUR in our SHC comments lately.

Forget about Soduku, this active writng and expressing of your views can also help your brain to stay ALERT and that is WHY I am also doing to keep me ALERT.

So less chances of getting DEMENTIA – the feared old age disease.

    Steven Chan

  103. Hi KT,

Comments are not to be edited. If you need to, please let admin know. A new comment to clarify the previous comment is needed.

Posts may be edited, for Event Organisers only.

    Terence Seah

  104. Hi Wong KT,

What a creative and humourous masterpiece of ANkLES but from different ANGLES ?

Enjoy your joke and couldn’t help laughing to myself.

Cowboy kept staring at me,you “SIAO”. HA! Ha!

Rem CAN CAN dance and the Men OOooooGLE at their Sexy legs from different ANGLES.

Too bad in Spore, we have once but now sudah TUTUP KEDAI.
    Customers SUDAH JALIAT ?

    Steven Chan

    Steven Chan

  105. Steven,

Spot on. What else could it be but dementia. For a king to risk his kingdom and 10,000 beauties in his harem for an ankle! Predictably, he died shortly after seeing the ill-fated ankle.

For Dae Jang Geum (Jewel in the Palace) fans – The Sequel prediction

Did you see the cute girl who suddenly appears as Jang Geum’s daughter towards the very end. Looks like her. Not him. Unless she wears a beard. Who is the real father?

Jewel Reboot – The great ankle tryst that will stake the future of the empire and puts the succession issue is in the play.

If only Princess Diana used her ankle instead of her head, she may have kept her prince and the empire instead of rolling in steel in a French tunnel. Sad.

  106. wah, after trying to read all the posts, I nearly forgot why I was here for!
such interesting forum I must say.
oh ya, pls include me for the latter session terence. tks, jeremy

  107. Hi Janet,
I will be going for the earlier session, but will stay a bit longer. I have a class to teach at 7pm at Tampines. We will go together, but I will have to head straight for school after that. Hope you don’t mind going home alone. Or we could catch the train together and I drop off earlier at Tampines ok?

  108. Come join this free and easy SHC Sept gathering at the Hans@Great Eastern. No topics.

Make arrangements to meet, chat and chat. A good opportunity to meet face to face to make travel plans, cooking plans, dancing plans, badminton plans, chess plans, beer plans or just fishing plans. Also, for you to meet your “My residential area” neighbours.

I guess this gathering is good for you to put a face, behind the who’s who when you participate in this online forum.

Have fun, whether you have retired or are still-working SilverHairs.

    Terence Seah

  109. Hi Terence, please confirm Hans@Great Eastern is the one situated at Pickering Street opp the former Pidemco Building? I have not been to this part of town for a long time! Thanks.

  110. Looks like this gonna be a big gathering. I am wearing a purple checker shirt, with brown and white stripes. Remember….SDU, for some of us then ??
    Ha ha….exciting.

  111. Daniel, heading for a hot date or what ?

Purple chequered shirt is quite common for upmarket guys so you still got time to match it with pink bell-bottomed pants, red scarf, orange knickers and 6-inch heeled suede boots.

Like that you’ll not only be unmistakable to SHCians but will also be the only one in town, from clarke quay to orchard rd to ann siang hill to istana to oxley rise…………..

  112. Hi Terence,

I’ve just been contacted by my friend who’s conducting the Hairdressing course which is heavily subsidized by WDA for people over 40 or those interested to learn a life-long skill.

To give our members a better picture of what it entails, e.g. how to enrol and what’s the costs and subsidy etc., this friend of mine is willing to come & give a short talk and share with us about this course if we can fit them in our monthly meetings. As there’s been a few interested members enquiring, these people are now ready to start a class if there’s enough participants. Can you pls let me know if this is feasible so that I can invite them to give us a brief presentation. I can be reached at: 67477234 (office hours). Regards, Lisa

  113. hi Lisa Ong..
I’m interested to be in yr fren’sHairdressing programe, if conducted, pls get me posted :)tks

Neely, Surly..are u all keen?, then we can do each other’s hair..save costs!..but dont botak my head hor!..hehehe!

btw Lisa..our ‘gang’ cant attend this evening’s gathering

  114. Alright, for you anythg can ….to oxley rise to bt batok east near hillview where opulent joy awaits all………..hee, happy now?

Wonder whether Dan still has his chequered shirt to wear home after the talk or kena snatched by Dan H and Daniel K to us as the chessboard for dum?

  115. Ha ha Tim, very joyful now. Only you and I are writing here. I think the rest are at Han’s watching Dancing Dan’s graceful moves on the not dum dum chess board.

  116. Hi Lisa,

It’s very nice of you to share ideas with fellow members.

As a guide, we would consider a talk during the monthly gatherings, depending on the event. However, as you may have noticed from previous gatherings, our events are strictly for SHC members only.

However, don’t be discouraged. Sometimes, I am just too sticky.

To encourage you, and if you are personally attending these hairdressing sessions, please feel free to write a new Post and invite other members to join you. I can see you already have interested participants.

  117. Hi Tim/Joy,

Was at Han’s earlier. But left at 5.45pm.

Manage to get Daniel Chan checkered shirt for a chess match with him and with KT.

Will be meeting Terence in the final for the chequer trophy.

Play Chess not dum, you dummy!

  118. Yes, Joy, I suppose the orang tua were all at Han’s to meet han tuah for some papayas to feed the buaya & bananas to satisfy the ah niahs.

(Wonder why didnt you go………del monte ones hor)

Terence can sometimes be put in a dilemma.

While he has to uphold and practise the very rules he has made for SHCians & himself, to enforce it strictly can be illogical….and can even be ludicrous.

There’re good healthy activities out there which a SHCian has come to know, and he wishes to share it here. But the activity organiser isnt a SHCian, and he charges a fee for entrants. And the SHCian certainly wont want to start the activity himself merely to be licensed to make the invite.

There’s where Mr T has to make judgmental calls, most of the times correctly, a few times he deliberately failed so that he cd sit for the supplementary with pretty gals wearing the 10 feathers he gave them.

    Clever Terence.

With praises heaping on him heavier than 881s, T’rence’s getting into that humsup trance again, draping the 10 feathers he made for pants and dripping…………………….perspiration (T, you expected me to say smthg else but sorie, cant pls you all the time hor).

  119. Hi Jane – Great to have met you at the Gathering, now that I know how you look like, I am looking forward to ‘bumping’ into you at NTUC Finest. Will catch up with you for coffee and our trip to Poison Ivy’s (once organised)

Mary – boy you sure are a stunning lady! Definitely get my vote for MS SHC! haha. It was certainly nice to have met you too and I will see you around at the next event?

Are you both joining Steven’s walk at Clementi?

  120. Hey Catherine, it took me a while to realise that “cyeo” stood for Catherine Yeo. I used to wonder who this cyeo character was. Hahaha, how dense of me!
And all this while, I was looking for a Catherine to write to.
You are too generous with your compliment but I will graciously say thank you.
I was out the whole day and got back only a while ago.
Yes I would like to meet up with you again. Let’s form a small group and go for lunch/tea one day, shall we?
Do you remember Jane Yeo? She also wants to get together again. Perhaps we could ask Christina Chan along too?
I will write to your personal email address and arrange something ok?
You are a lovely lady yourself and definitely too young to be a silver hair :-)

  121. Hey Christina,
It was great meeting you. Would you care to join me and a few others for lunch or tea one day? That meeting was too short a time as I had to rush off for work.
If you are game, I will arrange something either in the first or the second week of Oct ok?

    Cheers :-)

  122. Jane, we will get together sometime at the beginning of Oct ok? It was lovely meeting you and seeing you for the first time although only briefly.
I will try and arrange it on a Sat and ask some others along too. Then we can chat to our hearts’ content.
    Cheers:-)

  123. Hi Margaret Tune,
    What a musical surname. :-)
It was a pleasure meeting you. I’m trying to get a group of the ladies I got to meet at the Sept 18th meeting at Han’s, for a lunch or tea. I hope you are game.
    Cheers :-)
