  1. Yew Kwong & Team, very timely vs the backdrop of more work-years ahead so knowing IT definitely helps to open doors other than heading for that 1 door to the restroom with a broom and a hose waiting for us.

Keep up the good work, folks !

  2. Yew Kwong,

    Cheers! Yew Kwong,

Would be great if you can start from the very basic, ie. stripping out all the internal organs, explaining their functions, etc. follow by assembling with hands on. This would give the participants the in-depth knowledge of maintenance and upgrading one’s own should the needs arise in future.

Besides, would also appreciate recommendations for reliable brands of hard wares, be it internal or external.

    Suggestions only.

  3. Hi Benson n Edwin

Great suggestion! If U can find a place which can accomodate 4 to 5 persons n a working set of PC n monitor, I m ready 2 do it 4 U. Preferably on a Sat morning.

100% hands on from stripping 2 reassembling cum explanation.

  4. Hi Yew Kwong,

I am an IT idiot. Pl incl me for the workshops, any/all types (incl Benson’s suggestion at #2)……except that which teaches “how to use the keyboard”.

    Thanks.

  5. Yew Kwong,

I want to attend also. Good if you can include e-bay and blogging. Most importantly, teach us how to troubleshoot….like that hor, IT technician no business liao.

    Ah Nee

  6. Hi Yew Kwong,

Yes, i would like to find out and pursue
    more in-depth of e-learning.

Kindly let me know when will be the lesson,
I would like to attend at Chong Pang CC, cos near my place.

    Thanks

    Eileen

  7. Hi Yew Kwong,

Thanks, Yew Kwong, for providing this opportunity. Yes, I want to attend since I’m half-bake in IT. Anywhere, anytime, fine with me.

    Cheers

  8. Hi Yew Kwong

I am interested in knowing more about the hardware, interesting/useful sites, freeware, activex, flash, types of viruses, spam mail, spyware, etc, etc.

I would prefer the Henderson CC.

    Thanks.
    Joy

  9. Hi Yew Kwong

How many lessons will there be ? Am interested to learn but need to know the date. If every Sat. for the next few months will be tough for me.

  10. Hi Yew Kwong,

I am interested in joining the class to learn more about IT – Computer Hardware maintenance and Internet surfing.

Please let me know if you want me to help in any way.

    Bernie

  11. Ha,Ha. YK
u have a group of supporters for IT.
I have no firm discussion with the Henderson CC about the time and fee charges for using their IT room. Have u done any discussion with Susan Tien (Henderson CC) about it?

  12. Hi Kwong Wah

Importantly, we must 1st get the responses. Venues n fees are minor issues which can be easily ironed out. These workshops can even be conducted at members’ homes in smaller groups if spaces are available.

Will discuss with Henderson CC once we finalise the type of workshops our members wish 4.

  13. Hi Yew Kwong,

Please register me for the IT Workshop. Am interested in photo editing, web-page design, freeware, e-buying/selling, etc. Prefer lessons at Henderson CC.

Thank you for all the arrangements.

  14. Hi Yew Kwong

I’m interested in the workshop. Wonder if there is a possibility to include Excel and Access? I’d like to learn how to hyperlink and merge cells.

    Thank you.

  15. Yew Kwong, last but not least, think everyone should know how to use msn. It’s fun to find someone online to chat when you are free or bored. :)

  16. Whether you want to use the internet for biz or social, the ultimte objective is to generate traffic.

So I suggest a gotong-royong or self-help group. More of a workshop than a course. People learn on the job. We select a number of website/blogs from our members and have the group run assignments as a team to help build traffic to the selected sites.

Two birds with one stone. First, the valuable hands-on lesson on how to do it. And second, elp each other to get our sites up and running into the money.

There is a local self-styled blogging guru 25 years, Alvin Phang

His free preview is informative and recommended.

Alvin is focussed on blogging techniques and digital products. He doesn’t cover much on physical products and affiliate marketing. Hybrid affiliate marketing together with old fashion party-group MLM is a lethal marketing tool.

Ebay is much more effective for trading physical products and bigger ticket items. A listing on Ebay costs US$3 per week for the average product.
For scale dependent on reserve price see
    http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fees.html
You have to be pretty serious with a product before doing this.

Note the previews are at PSB Academy also near Tiong Bahru MRT. There are many places in the campus where the group can meet including the canteen. Value for money. Coffee or no, you can stick around for the whole day. Ideal for a downtown SHC clubhouse. This is another possible venue.

PSB or Henderson CC are ideal locations. Car park is $4 per night. If we want some place to hangout, we can go up the road to IKEA. With IKEA Friends card, beverages are free and meals are discounted. Swedish meatballs anyone?

  17. Hi Yew Kwong,

Pls include our names in the list.
We would prefer the Sat class at Chong Pang
CC and preferably in the afternoon.

  18. oh yes!..pls register me,dont want to get left behind lah :)

Sue..actually on the contrary, not everyone knows msn….like me(suaku)…i know there’s such thingi..cos notice my kids seem to hook on it!
but never tried…seem no time to chat leh ..
    hahaha :)

  19. I am interested in PC Building n Maintenance (includes troubleshooting). It will be interesting to build a PC from scratch and being able to troubleshoot when problem arises. (Hopefully none!!)

  20. Hi Yew Kwong,

By the look at the response, you are definitely being over-loaded. Can I be your assistant to share some load? For IT, I am okay with Hardware and Software, and maybe some applications software. Need a helping hand, let me know but in advance because I still have to travel frequently, at least for this year.

    Cheers,

    Ronald Lee

  21. Hi Ronald Lee and YK,
It’s encouraging to have such a response.
We need to start with a core group to discuss and organize how, what, where, when and who to conduct the IT topics to members.

  22. Hi Yew Kwong,

I have a suggestion. Instead of booking the CC mentioned, can we have it in someone home or finding a room in town.Just let me know the hours needed as I know of a place to conduct it at reasonable cost.

Of course those participating would have to bring their notebooks or desktop. I will provide the transportation.

I can bring along 2 or three notebooks and a desktop.

  23. Hello Dan,
Welcome your suggestions to YK. To conduct a topic in the home, I think we can do it with only 3 to 5 participants at a time, (plus a trainer and 1 or 2 helpers), and preferable that their notebooks or desktop are running on the same system. If it is of different O/S, it is going to be very taxing for the trainer. We need about 3 hrs. per section.
Tks. and please forward more points for discussion.

  24. Hi Dan

According to Yew Kwong’s post, it only costs $5 per person for a 3-hour session at the CC. And the PCs would likely have the same operating system and software, which would make it easier for the teacher and the students.

    Just my two cents worth.

    Joy

  25. Thank you Dan for the concern, and nice to have Lily Ho offering her study room.
Beside YK, Ronald Lee, YeungAndrew and myself, we need more trainers and helpers for the lessons. Any member who wish to teach or help (even for 1 topic) please let YK know.

  26. Hi Yew Kwong,

Would like to learn photo editing. How to download to PC and how to post on the web.

Am sure some of you are keen too. We will bring our digital camera along.

  27. Hello YK,

If time permits any possibility to learn the difference between Window XP and Window Vista. As we note XP will be phased out in due course and Vista coming onboard. For some (like me) could be an added knowledge!

    Thanks/Grace

  28. Grace

Your worry is unfound. Win XP will not be phased out sooner but rather Microssoft will not provide support for it when the rite time comes once Win Vista stablises. Even then Win XP will still take some donkey yrs 2 phase out.

For info, there are ppl still using Win 98SE 10 yrs after it was 1st launched. All because they are used 2 it n its pretty stable.

Users are more concerned wif application software n utility programs rather than windows (OS). If U ask them they will tell U they prefer Win XP. I wd also say “yes” altho I m using both Windows.

  29. Yew Kwong

Are you talking about me. Thanks for not mentioning my name. But I have to confess here, I really love the Window 98. An lazy and stubborn silverhair.

  30. Andrew

Not U but others. Some companies in Singapore are using Win 95 but server version Win NT version 4 which runs DOS application program.

So its not a case of which Windows U use but what U need 2 use.

  31. Hi Andrew ,Yew Kwong,

    I am STILL using the
    Windows Millenium 2000,
    and is OK with it.

I am still behind time .What more talking Windows VISTA ?

  32. What YK said is absolutely correct.

Any new version of the O/S is only added with some new features and more user-friendly operations. Some of these features are not necessary useful to us, unless we want to specilize on that operation.

Example: Media Player version 9 is good enough for most of us, but if U need to do more on music and video, then you need to upgrade to the version 11(W98&W2K cannot support it,WXP yes). U can do Power-Point with W2K, but if you want more user-friendly operations or more features, U have to do it in WXP which can support the latest M/S Office 2007. Same with the Vista, but I don’t know what are the new features.

    Hi lynn,
Glad to know that U are willing to pass on what you will learnt to others. Do become a helper when we teach. U will learn more and faster this way. It is a double-gain situation –
the trainer has a helper and the helper can pick-up some querries he or she never come across.

  33. YK and Kwong Wah,

Appreciate the feedback. Learnt from corporate IT support of the phasing out therefore was the concern. Well look forward to the sessions :)

    Grace

  34. Yew Kwong,

There is a internet cafe near Bugis MRT which can be used for PC activities. Would you like to explore on the venue and have some activities line up.
