I came to know about the SHC from eNN (Seng Kang). My interests are varied. I write on the forum regularly to improve my writing. In my autumn years, my priority is voluntary service. Hope to meet like-minded people and help initiate a programme/project for the disabled like the hearing impaired.

  1. Hi Hassmine,

Welcome to the Club. Hope you are able to get yourselves involve in the many activities that we are organising.

In the area of voluntary work, you could do a posting and see how the response will be.

  2. Hi Dan and Steven

Thanks for welcoming me to the club. I enjoy reading your posts. There’s a camaraderie among the regular writers.

I will join the monthly gathering if the venue is suitable. I may visit the hotdog stall in Hougang as I’m familiar with that area.

Regarding voluntary work, I have the idea of sending used clothes and books to Timor Leste or other countries that need such donations, but I don’t have any contacts. If any member in SHC is involved in such a project, do contact me. I can get a church to donate used clothes and books.

  3. Hi Jasmine,

Are you interested in Thailand and China?

Using the tools of livelihood Project (some called Enterprise Development other coin them as Social Enterprise) to support the disadvantaged in climbing out of the proverty trap. The big difference is, it is your business, but you are willing to share the fruits with the people. Not an easy thing to do emotionally when the cash is in your hand. Let us talk about it with the Steven CHAN’s group from Clementi where a fraternity is growing quietly. :>)) Edwin ONG

  4. Hi Edwin

Sure I’m interested in China and Thailand. Will be happy to meet the quietly-growing fraternity in Clementi and see if there’s a role for me.
    Tks for letting me know.

  5. Hi Jassmine…welcome to the club. I am interested in voluntary service too. Pls count me in if you need an extra pair of hands. Don forget OK!!!

  6. Hi June
Thanks for your warm welcome. I’m happy to know one more person who likes to do voluntary work. Do you have anything in mind to help the needy? Maybe together we could start a small project.

    Regards
    Jassmine

  7. Would love to Jassmine but I am as greenhorn as u are.

Perhaps I give u an idea of what I do for voluntary work and u see where I fit in. The only voluntary work I hve done so far is selling tulips for the Children Cancer society and draw tickets for the Red Cross. But stopped doing that whn the NKF saga started. It started me thinking and wondering how much of such donations really go to the beneficiaries!!!! 3 yrs back I went with a church grp to ChengMai to visit a Karen tribe. We brought lots of used clothes for them, thot the children simple english, help repair a wooden bridge etc etc…it was a real eye opener for me. I enjoyed it tremendously, gave me so much meaning to life!! Last year end I couldn’t join them as my mom in law passed away one week before I was supposed to leave. This year no trip was organised bec of security reasons.

So am itching to do some form of voluntary work. Recently I met someone who is helping out in a hospice. So I may go check it out end of this year.

I too hve no connections. So really clueless on the small project. Yes, if only we can start something, and give all to the needy. Not like some who collects and keeps 90%!!!! We can make a difference! But how Jassmine?

Jassmine, I don’t visit this website everyday, and in case I miss your comment, here’s my email address should u need to reach me….junelim@mas.gov.sg.

  8. Personally, I draw a distinction btwn voluntary work which is institutionalised, and charity work which can and shd begin at home.

In voluntary work, you’re usually assigned a role, see $ come in but not knowing where it goes to.

In charity work, like June’s Chengmai trip, you’re put in touch with the beneficiaries, do exactly what you wish to do for those you seek out to do, and know precisely what they need, how much they need, and your limits.

For a start, if time and $ permit, one cd drop by at 1-room flats @ bt merah/henderson/macpherson estates to befriend the really poor..it’s not a day’s work, it takes time, patience, coaxing and a sense of committment & duty……….

  9. To June and Tim Liu

    Dear June,

To me you are already an experienced volunteer while I’m a newbie, but I’m keen to learn. Tim’s post has given me the idea of visiting the elderly poor in Macpherson, etc and bringing them some stuff. Interested?

    Hi Tim,

I know what you mean about not knowing where the money goes to. Many of us were hurt by the NKF debacle. Thanks for sharing your opinion.

Your reference to the poor in Bt Merah etc – whom do we contact if we want to visit these elderly poor?

Thanks for giving me a lead.

    Jassmine

  10. Hi Jassmine,

Sorry for cutting into this thread. If you are interested on what Tim had suggested with regards to befriending the elderly, you may want to join the Lion Befrienders. Do take a look at the website: http://www.lionsbefrienders.org.sg. This voluntary org. is set up by the Lions Club. Besides visiting the elderly, they are many ways that we can contribute and help (some times behind the scene). I know they need volunteers in many areas. Training is provided (foc) to those who are keen cos not everyone of us is cut for this kind of work. You may want to try out and get a feel of the work first by joining the volunteers on one of the weekends. Feel free to contact me (LKYIVY@hotmail.com)if you are keen. If there are other SHCians who are interested, perhaps you may want to form a group from here. Tim might have some ideas.

  11. Hello Ivy

Thank you very much for the information on the Lion Befrienders (LB). I will browse through their website when the need arises. Meanwhile I prefer to learn within the SHC fraternity as we have common denominators and, with regards to voluntary service, I think we share a similar philosophy.

Is it possible for a person to attend the free training without joining the LB? I hope you initiate a visit to the elderly poor for SHC members. I’ll be keen to join you.

    Regards
    Jassmine

  12. Jassmine, I’m not sure if LB provides training to non-LB members. Unlikely, I think. As I’m not living in sg these days (moved to hk two mths ago), it would be difficult for me to initiate an official visit to the elderly at this point of time. I think a lot of groundwork is needed to make official visits to such Homes under the capacity of SHC. Anyway, I do not hv such experience. So far, I had only worked along with the LB. Sorry to disappoint you.

  13. To Steven and Ivy

Ivy, there’s no need to apologize. Are you in HK for the long term? Take care.

    Hi Steven
Will you be interested if the elderly poor are in Toa Payoh? I’ll work on a idea while waiting for a suitable project/activity to pop up.

    Regards to both
    Jassmine

  14. Hi Jasmine,

I admire your noble intentions &
“priority in life is voluntary service”.

I wonder if you would be interested in being a Volunteer Resource Facilitator (RF) for aLife Ltd?

The aim of the RF is to help expectant mothers who visit polyclinics to ask for referal letters to hospitals to abort their unborn babies.

RFs speak with the mothers BEFORE they obtain referal letters to Terminate Pregnancy & try to help the mothers to find alternative means to “solve the problem” of the unplanned pregnancy.

aLife Ltd is a secular voluntary organisation that is pro life. Believes that life begins at conception and want to give the unborn child a chance to live.

According to 2006 statistics, about 200 mothers opted to continue with the pregnancy after meeting with the RFs.

Because of shortage of volunteers, Alife only has RFs in 8 polyclinics now. It hopes to be able to set up offices in more polyclinics so that more babies can be saved.

Training will be provided by aLife Ltd.

I can be contacted by email:
    stmary33@yahoo.com.sg

    Warm regards,

    Priscilla Wee

  15. Hi Priscilla,
It’s a good cause to champion. Have sent you an e-mail.
Wonder if there are other SHC members who are interested. Pl contact Priscilla if you are.

  16. Hi Jassmine,
    Welcome to SHC.

Glad to know dat u r in2 volunteer svc. Maybe u can look2 in2 Willing Heart @ 82 Jalan Taman, Singapore 329020, tel: 64765822. I oli bn there once 2 help to cater for lunch gathering for these old folks thru them. These old folks are residing (1rm flat) mainly in Taman Ho Swee, Bukit Ho Swee and St Michael’s district.

Dun noe the procedure of how 2b full time volunteer due to heavy work schedule rite now. However, if u r thinking of a 1x help for these needy old folks, perhaps, you can start the ball rolling to organise lunch or dinner. Normally they will requested us to prepare at least 6 dishes with 1 soup for 100paxs excluding take out, i.e. for those oldies dat are not so mobile enough to queue for food. This can be done either during lunch or dinner. Normally, my senior will liaise with the caretaker (Tony) on this and we will chip out cash/time for this kind of project. You can also include sing-along session for them.

Hope this info is useful to you… Dolly

  17. Hi Dolly,

Thanks for the welcome. It’s so heart-warming to know there are people who are helping to feed the poor.

Regarding the lunch/dinner – it’s on a very large scale – 1000 paxs! and excluding takeaways! I’ve to think very hard to see who among my friends have the experience of cooking for an army….will KIV this soup kitchen (esp the sing-along aspect).

I don’t mind chipping in and helping to serve or wash the dishes though. Contact me if they are short of manpower.

    Thanks for sharing about W-Hearts.

    Regards
    Jassmine
