Riding Passion

Cycling over 1500km of terrain covering high altitudes, difficult climbs and long stretches may not sound like your kind of fun.

How about exploring the Eastern Coastal Park Connectors – lush landscape, away from the hustle and bustle of traffic noise and exhaust fumes.  This is not meant to substitute or replace Yew Kwong’s (Lau Ta) monthly cycling event.  It is an extension for those who feel cycling once a month is insufficient.  The park connectors vary in lengh, ranging from 2km to 10km, cater for cyclists who prefer longer distances.

Our initial recommendation, try cycling from EC MacDonald to Changi Point.  Have some snack/drink before cycling back via the same route.  If Kakis are tired along the route, they may "U’ turn or wait/rest at the spot for our return (there are rest stops along the way and you can also see plane taking off or landing).  This route is straight, no hills, good shade, you can feel and see the distance.  It is simple and less stressful on beginners too.

BTW, Airshow is from 18-24 Feb (am I right?).  It would be a good idea if we could cycle along the park connector that is parallel to the airport runway on 24 Feb so that we could also view the fly past, provided the police do not seal off the park connector.

We do not know how many Kakis could cover that distance.  Worry you can’t do it?  Go through regular cycling regime in order to be able to maintain your strength.  It’s all in the Mind.

Much talk about this excitement! Let’s have a show of hands here before we confirmed the dates – other Sats or Sun (do not want to clash with monthly walk too)

Enjoy the festive season’s goodies first and then, come back to cycle harder.emoticon

If I am free and have no other commitments, I will be riding on either Sat or Sun – Feb 2/3

Extreme Sports fan, are you enthusiastic about this kind of ride?

  2. Hi Douglas and Rene

Count me in. So glad to have kakis in this activity. Thanks.

Either Saturday or Sunday is fine with me but preferably after the CNY holidays. But got to
plan and pray for good weather.

I cycled from Changi Village to Pasir Ris chalets and back via the connector – distance about 15km. Wanted to cycle from Fort Rd to
ECP Safra, if I have the time.

So tempted to join both of you on Feb2/3, see
    first.

  6. Hello Douglas, Rely & Norly,

I also want to explore the Eastern Coastal Park Connectors leh, so when is the suitable date & time? Wei wei, we have to use our own bicycle for this cycling trip right? Norly, what happen if half way thru, our bicycle puncture, how ????, last time it happened, can pushed bicycle but now the distance is much longer…. :(

    Ah Nee

  7. Hi cycling kakis

Norlinda #5 that is a good idea, while they were exercising their jaws at Toa Payoh, we will be exercising our legs.Could we could meet somewhere for luch and proceed from there up to Changi Point-Pasir Ris.

Ah Nee#8, Alamak, ur tyre puncture,no problem,no problem lar becos you will have to go the extra mile lor-yours will be known as cycling cum distance walking.
But don’t worry, we will not leave u behind.

  8. Hi Rene

I wld definitely love 2 join U. Perhaps a better time is aft CNY on an early Sun morn. Meet at ECP McDonald 4 a light b/f b4 starting off. On rchg e oth end we can then hv tea break.

In e meantime I wld think of setting my bike issue – shd get or rent one. Maybe if I dun ride I can run alongside while U ride. Can?

  9. Hmmm, Riding Passion. What an eye catching title for a post. For a fleeting moment, I was thinking of something else. But then, reality hit that it couldn’t be because MM’s rules are clearly stated above. No sez (Andrew, this word you won’t find in Oxford nor encarta. It is KT’s brilliant creation to avoid moderation), etc…

Hee hee…notti start to a Wed because I am finally getting my break. On leave…today only la.

  10. OOppss!…sori Douglas for misinterpreting yr comments..paiseh,thot u really seriously standby for work lah!..

Ah Nee…yr bike puncture no problem…u got a small basket rite, bring yr portable pump..sure safe…haha
Lau Ta Yew Kwong…mai sunday lah…we go satdy..bcos,after riding for 4 hrs or so…our ‘pamelo’ sure will sakit lah…then at least we got sunday to recuperate..LOL

  11. hi Norlinda

#5. Hope to see you also. Joined SHC only
in Jan08. Met some of the other members
last Sat., event organised by June. What a
    lively group.

  12. Dear Friends,
It is heartwarming to see old and new friends keen on taking up this form of exercise.

    Nor,
Yes, CNY is a busy period but I don’t only do spring cleaning, I do it round the season. I still have to find time to exercise.

    Alicia Soh
Didn’t know you were at June’s fan making class. I was there too. Glad to know you are a cycling enthusiast too.

    Charles,
Why after CNY period? You also do spring cleaning huh? I thought only the ladies in the house are busy during this period.

    Andrew Kuan
Look forward to meet you on either 23/24 Feb.

    Yew Kwong Lau Ta
Sure, we love to have a handyman run along with us while we ride and go to Ah Nee’s rescue when needed.
We will have to talk about bike rental issues (for those who don’t have their own bike)

    Joy Chuang
Thanks for your comment. Hope you are able to come and join us too. :)

    Joyce Tan
    Safety measures will be taken.

Most probably, we will fix a date (either Sats except Feb 16 or Suns- Feb 17 & 23/24) after the CNY holidays. Yes, have breakfast and start early…follow by tea break…dinner …supper!
Rain or Shine, we would be there once scheduled.

    Cheers
    Rene

  13. Hi Rene

Let us target for 24 Feb Sunday morning at the ECP MacDonald outlet, say 8:30am. Will rent a bike there. Mid distance, about 25km?

Start with breakfast, end with lunch with breaks between…yes?

Might be lecturing Immediate Fundamental Analysis on Sat, 23 Feb.

    Cheers, Andrew

  14. I plan to recky on 16Feb morning..
anybody wanna follow?..I know Douglas & Rene going tim sum…but thats lunch rite…go cycle first, then timsum then again 4pm can join LauTa & ‘L’ plates..how’s that?..
wah kill so many birds with a stone!..hehe

  15. Nor @ #17

We abstain ourselves from any form of killing during CNY. Wat we could do best is 2 “stone” the birds n bring them home. Keep them alive 4 a while n then slaughter them at e rite time 4 a wonderful feast. Can?

    AndrewK @ #16

It’ll be an uphill task 2 rent bikes in e morning cos most rental shops open ard 11 am. Its sth tat I nid 2 find e rite solution. If cant then I will do running instead.

  16. Dear Yew Kwong

Noted, the opening time of bike rental. Last few times was cycling on friends’ bikes.

Would prefer to run either at the Bedok Stadium or own estate gym. Average 3.5km to ensure “life-long” useful knees.

Am still open for the afternoon cycling along the ECP. Can meet for lunch then cycle. Your pick?

  17. Hi Rene & Douglas,

Can join you guys from the 16th Feb onwards. Hey i m a bit confused. R we cycling from ECP to Pasir Ris Park or ECP to Changi Village? Sori Hor!

Douglas: Haf we met b4? Wld like 2 mit u.

    Cheers
    Dennis not the menace

  18. Aiya Dennis,
We have many Sats/Suns to explore mah. We start with a shorter and easier route so that the beginners are more at ease and some “Pamelos” also cannot ‘tahan’ long distance leh.
    We will progress accordingly.

    Andrew Kuan,
Yeap, we need to look at the logistics…any idea from kakis?

    Nor,
On 16 Feb, meet Douglas at Tanah Merah MRT station around 6:30am. Boleh? Cycly from there to Changi Point via the ECP connector parallel to the runway, rest at Changi point, then cycle back in time for me (not sure leh) to join other SHCians for CNY Tim Sum lunch from 11am-2pm. Thereafter, maybe join Yew Kwong’s cyclists to burn more calories again.

    Cycling Kakis,
We welcome your ideas and suggestions. Together we explore more!

    Cheers
    Rene

  19. Hi Rene, and everybody,

Would you know if we can now bring a foldable bike into a MRT station? I bought a used one, and I feel I should maximise its use.

By the way, what is the estimated KM for your 6.30 am journey? Thinking .. of joining you.

    Terence Seah

  20. Terence

Yes, U can provide it dun look tat huge after U hv folded it. If not e stn staff can refuse ur admission into e stn.

I guess urs is e smaller one meaning its e non-standard size. Rite?

  21. Hi Terence

Saw a couple of foldable bikes into our MRT stations.

Good idea, perhaps Giant sells them too.

Can consider investing on one too: no concern about ERP gantry surcharges.

    Cheers, Andrew

  22. Sorry to disappoint you guys… but there have been postings on other websites stating that bikes are NOT ALLOWED on MRT and buses. You must put your foldable bike into a bag and even then the MRT would have the right to eject you if they deem it too big.

  23. Hi Rene/Douglas,

Ah Nee and I are available for cycling only on 24/2 as we are attending MAS family day on 23/2. Also, we need to rent bikes as we have none of our own.

Tim #26, That’s what I mean by saying that you have a wild imagination. Fancy us going into the MRT on wheelchairs!

  24. Hi cyclist,

No doubt a foldable bike is convenient to bring around and can put in a car, but you may want to take note that a foldable bike is not a good choice for long distance ride. I tried it out before, its not so stable even for short distance ride, that’s why I have not bought one though I wanted very much to own one.

    Ah Nee

  25. Line, it’s real, not a fig of imagination. No argument & no time to waste at the turnstiles if yr wheelchair serves you as a bike.

Sit on yr wheelchair-bike and everyone will make room for you then after you get out & get up, fold it and walk as quickly as you can, they’ll be too amazed to go after you…………

Try it and file yr report.

  26. well…Ahnee got the facts rite, foldable bikes not for long ride,u paddle so long also don reach yr destination lah!apa macam, very tiring

Helo YK @18, nowadays u very naughty ah?..ok lah we keep till ‘chap go mei’..LOL

Rene @21..Ok, joted in my diary 16Feb we go recky.so wat time we meet up from home? 6am enough time to reach Tanah Merah?
after that u go timsum, i will go home & rest then 4pm meet at MacDonald, maybe briskwalk if pamelo sakit..haha

  27. Hello Nor,

After ‘chap go mei’..Yew Kwong want to do what huh????

You said at #31: Helo YK @18, nowadays u very naughty ah?..ok lah we keep till ‘chap go mei’..LOL, so after ‘chap go mei’ he want to do something naughty huh…… :)

    Ah Nee

  28. Hey, relax everyone, there are many sats/suns in a month, dont rush, enjoy the CNY and who volunteer me to meet Nor at Tanah Merah at 6.30am. Hey 6.30am is still my sleeping time hor.

    Nor#17: Feb16,I boleh,but6.30AM no boleh

Dennis#20, U seem 2hv met or noe me,Sorry,I can’t recall,as I only attended the cycling event for the 1st time on 12Jan. let me intro myself when we meet for cycling ok.

  29. Lina, so you too hv seen Terence’s bike ?

Yes, i can confirm that it’s a very big bike which was built for the Moscow Circus. With a bike like that, he can out-speed the mrt so he wont hv to take the train. But that kind of bike has no brakes hor………

  30. Rene,

Looks like my foldable cannot go the MRT. So sad. Will one be able to rent the bic at 6.30 am in the morning. Maybe it is a good idea to rent, then dont have to drag it to the lunch.

I am keen to participate, as I will be in Singapore.

    Terence Seah

  31. Dear Rene

I am keen to rent a bike and ride with you and rest, after lunch together….. on Sunday, 24 Feb….can you confirm please?

    Hi Terence

Believe bike rental shops open around 11am.

    Cheers, Andrew

  32. Helo Douglas…
its not me who decide the timing leh
Rene said to meet up with u at 6.30am?,so i thot u very early bird..very goooddie lor..
Yes many sats & sundys…but die die must do b4 ‘chap go mei’ lah…then the Rat yr will be with us!alamak…all very kancheong, sum yok yok! its all bcos of you also what?…tell us so much abt the connector :)

Rene…u got extra bike to lend Terence or not..so kesian lah he really like a small kid want to tag along leh..hehe

  33. Ha ha, Norlinda, sei kong kong fu wa : sum yok yok. multi-talented

Yes, there are many weekends to cycle …..I am on for Sunday, 24 Feb from lunch time till 5/6pm ….. let us meet at MacD outlet, around 12:30pm then proceed, Douglas, Rene, others….yes?

  34. Rene – ya, I attended June’s fan making session, was with Peng Peng, Peggy’s group.

I have a foldable bike, weight 12kg,no problem cycling long distances. Only problems is the weight, folding, unfolding. Looked like a wheelchair when folded, haha.

If we are going to cycle for many hours, renting a bike from Changi Village would be cheaper,S$5.00 for less than 5hrs, S$10.00 for the whole day, although the bikes are not the classy ones. Whereas it will cost a bomb if
we rent the bike from ECP.

I am on for either Sat or Sun from noon time onwards. Sat/Sun mornings cannot join at the moment, except 16 and 17 Feb08. Any dates fixed yet? How about 17 Feb08 morning?

  35. I m comfortable wif Changi Village cos of e abundant availability of bike on rental from early morn. At ECP, shops start biz ard 11 am. We can cycle leisurely (mayb a 3-4 hr) fr Changi 2 Pasir Ris then 2 East Coast (hv lunch) n bck 2 CV 4 dinner.

  36. Dear Yew Kwong

Good idea, thot of taking whole Sunday (24 Feb) off, after couple of overseas trips and couple of lecturing/talk sessions so far.

Are you game? Meet at Changi Village for breakfast first (8am) then cycle throughout till RV for dinner.

Believe have benefited from last year’s 55Km cycling experience from ECP (McD) to stadium, city/Marina South and back as an amateur, but on a friend’s good quality bike.

  37. Hi AndrewK

Yes, its a DEAL. Gd 2 do 55km which is fresh n challenging. Last yr I did a 46km one.

Quality of bike makes not onli a difference but a drastic one. Tats y its buying a gd bike can be a gd life long investment.

  38. hi rene

i would like to join but after CNY. I love cycling and often cycle to Changi V for makan at the hawker centre. that’s the draw.

i can be reached at 91078714.

  39. Dear Cycling Kakis,

Soli for my tardiness in replying. I was tight up with work projects over the weekend to meet today’s deadline. Phew!

Give me some time to find out whether the PCN is block on the 24 Feb for security reasons.

Daisy, Margie, Boon Liang and all,
