Riding Passion: SHCians Go HIR!

Wanna know where the 6 crazy SHCians were last night from 10pm – 5am?  We embarked on a "60Km: Half Island Ride" from 28 June – 29 June.

We cycled from ECP MacD – Fort Rd – Nicholl Highway – Shenton Way – Telok Blangah Rd -passed by VIVO city and reached Labrador Park at 11:45pm for break.  At 12am, we proceeded to West Coast Highway – Jalan Buroh – Jurong Port Rd.  We arrived Yuan Ching MacD at 1:30am and took a 20-30m break.

About 2am, we moved on to Boon Lay Way – Ulu Pandan Park Connector, passed by Jurong East Central – Clementi – Commonwealth Ave – Alexandra Rd – Havelock Rd – Eu Tong Sen – Victoria Street.  We rested at nearby Allson Hotel.

We journeyed on our last segment from Victoria Street – Nicoll Highway – Stadium Rd – Tg Rhu completing the ride back to ECP MacD with the first batch landed their firing bum at 4:45am.

Throughout the 60km+ journey, we have had a mixture of feelings – fear, excitement and ultimately, the adrenaline of a new challenge.  We were riding alongside vehicles along the busy hubs, highways and were treated to the night sights and sounds of Singapore.

To feel the wind rushing against our faces was an unforgettable experience and together with the good companionship of SHCian cyclists, it was indeed a treat away from our normal hectic and stressful lifestyle.  To top it off, we were blessed with a breezy and cooling night weather which made the ride all the more memorable.  It was a ride forever etched in our memories.

Despite some of us have initial doubts about our BODY and SOUL adjustment. No doubt, we SHCians have proven  that we are still able to keep up with the stamina and stay awake!  In fact, we did it with much enthusiasm and rewarded with a thrill experience!

So, Comrades! Are you still game to join me for the next biggest challenge of "Round Island Ride of 120km?

By the way, we started our Adventure Riding this year.  Those who missed the boat can do a search under "cycling/riding passion/outdoor activities" on the following:

1. ‘Lou Hei ride on 16 Feb 08

2. Explore Park Connector: Tanah Merah-Bedok area – Pasir Ris Park on 23 Feb 08

3. Have Passport will ride to JB, Tg Pengerang on 12 Apr 08

4. National Runway at Paya Lebar Air Force on 25 May 08

5. PIP….

We are reviving our Riding Passion to regain the momentum with a regular long distance cycling workout.  We LOVE to see more SHCians who are as passionate and crazy about adventure cycling to explore places together with us:

  • Tentative date: 26 July 08, Saturday (postpone)
  • Meeting Time: 5pm at ECP MacD bicycle Kiosk
  • Route: Eastern Coastal Park Connector (detour, refer to email)
  • Workout > Dinner > Workout >Supper/Balek Kampung!

The usual riders are:  (own Bike) Rene Leong/Douglas Chan/Boon Liang & (rent bike) Joyce Tan….

Coming are: (own Bike) Kathryn Lee/ (rent bike) Mike, Alicia, Ros White, Teresa Huang, John Seah, Ronald Wie, Dave Tan

Anyone game for the adventure…please write here or email: rene.leong@gmail.com if you have some questions.

NB:*This is not a DUPLICATION of Monthly Leisure cycling for amateur "L" plate.  This is an adventurous sport.   Basically, it requires some thigh conditioning.

Cheers,

Rene and Douglas

Life goes on…..

I would like to share the story of an extraordinary love that a father has for his son.  It is the story of Dick Hoyt and his son Rick.  66-year old Dick climbs mountains, runs to the ends of the earths and swims across oceans to give his son Rick, a better life.

When Rick was born, he suffered from cerebral palsy (as a result of the umblical cord being caught around his neck at birth)  Doctors told Dick that his son would never be able to walk or talk and that it would be best to forget about him and leave him in an institution.  He would be nothing more than a vegetable for life.

Yet, Dick was determined to bring his son up like other child and wanted to ensure that he was not deprived of anything in life as a result of his condition.

Today, at age 66, Dick and his son Rick (44) have competed together in 950 races, 60 marathons and 6 Iron Man Triathlons.

But the most important part of his story is that Rick has successfully graduated from Boston University and this is an inspiration to millions around the world.  Watch the video of his story………..

Riding Passion

Cycling over 1500km of terrain covering high altitudes, difficult climbs and long stretches may not sound like your kind of fun.

How about exploring the Eastern Coastal Park Connectors – lush landscape, away from the hustle and bustle of traffic noise and exhaust fumes.  This is not meant to substitute or replace Yew Kwong’s (Lau Ta) monthly cycling event.  It is an extension for those who feel cycling once a month is insufficient.  The park connectors vary in lengh, ranging from 2km to 10km, cater for cyclists who prefer longer distances.

Our initial recommendation, try cycling from EC MacDonald to Changi Point.  Have some snack/drink before cycling back via the same route.  If Kakis are tired along the route, they may "U’ turn or wait/rest at the spot for our return (there are rest stops along the way and you can also see plane taking off or landing).  This route is straight, no hills, good shade, you can feel and see the distance.  It is simple and less stressful on beginners too.

BTW, Airshow is from 18-24 Feb (am I right?).  It would be a good idea if we could cycle along the park connector that is parallel to the airport runway on 24 Feb so that we could also view the fly past, provided the police do not seal off the park connector.

We do not know how many Kakis could cover that distance.  Worry you can’t do it?  Go through regular cycling regime in order to be able to maintain your strength.  It’s all in the Mind.

Much talk about this excitement! Let’s have a show of hands here before we confirmed the dates – other Sats or Sun (do not want to clash with monthly walk too)

Enjoy the festive season’s goodies first and then, come back to cycle harder.emoticon

If I am free and have no other commitments, I will be riding on either Sat or Sun – Feb 2/3

Extreme Sports fan, are you enthusiastic about this kind of ride?
