I need a new lease on life, do you?

A chance to improve one’s situation or to live longer or more happily without plastic surgery is all I strive for. Where I am today is the result of the choices and habits I made and also what I eat. I am going on a 30 days meat fast with the hope that some of the maladies which I now experience will be reverse. Yes, no meat, no fish and no eggs….. I just discovered that sugar or too much carbo is not the culprit but the oil that we consume is what our bodies suffer from. I believe one day I can be free from insulin.

The thought is still on my mind and I have not started on it. The spirit is willing but the body is weak. I am looking for like-minded person to join me on this arduous journey. Share with us here what other method is available beside mango?

Desperate Dan.

  1. I am just the opposite of your finding I just discover that my high triglyceride is due to high carbo. and sugar My good and bad cholesterol are fine
I think oil, butter, pastry meat etc are the ones that give high LPL reading So cutting on carbo, sugar, fats and exercise can reduce cholesterol
As to diabetes I am still researching what contributes. I do not think that sugar is the cause I thought I am at risk but my reading has been ok

  2. Hi Dan,

You must have taken some time from your job to write this Post.

I guess you mean you are planning to go without meat for 30 days. I think you dont have to suffer this much. I would instead suggest that you monitor your blood sugar levels 3 times a day, two hours after each meal. Then, you will know whether what you eat is appropriate for your sugar level, after 30 days.

I read about diabetic treatment, what we can eat, cannot eat, that we have to exercise, etc. If you have to be on insulin, stay on it. Your doctor probably sees that whatever oral medicine and exercise you have done are insufficient to maintain reasonable sugar levels.

As you know, I too am diabetic.

  3. Hello Dan,
If you give up meat for the next 30 days, you will need to find alternative sources of good protein – perhaps plant base. My recommendation is for you to seek the advice of a Nutritionist. It is important for a diabetic to eat correctly for the body to function well. Do not start a diet without consulting your Doctor or a Nutritionist. Take good care.
    Warm regards, winnie

  4. Hi Christina,
Thanks for sharing, I guess I will need to try this out. I am still in the process of sorting out what to eat for my three meals.
Terence, the thought of going on a vegetation diet have been in my mind for the last ten years but never have the discipline to enforce it. I do not wish to delay much longer. It’s good that now I know of a friend who have recover from this regime and with his guidance it ‘do or die; for me.
Dear Roland, good to hear from you. What I am into now will be purely nuts, fruits and vegetable and lot of herbs which are obtainable from certain dry good markets.

  5. Hi Terence and all,

    Terence,
To answer your comment on the topic of mangoes. Yes, I “WAS” diabetic. I wrote my story some time back on my case in your SHC forum but will rehash it.
I was in Pattaya back in 2010 and quite suddenly was having severe eyesight problem of double vision for seeing far. This is definitely unusual and very uncomfortable for me. I went back and requested for a diabetic test which they called Glucose Tolerence test. I was made to drink a very sweet orange juice and have my urine analysis. My worst fear came true. I was diagnoise with full blown Type II diabetes and put on 1000 mg metformin treatment and weekly blood sugar monitoring immediately. Come to think of it, I may be carrying this for quite a while ( a few years) as I have the other classic diabetics symptoms.
I went on an self imposed diet and exercise regime immediately while embarking on the medical treatment . I began to jog every day and cut down my diet : Less carbo, more fibre. The food part was easy but not the exercise. I pant and pant even over short distance and walking but did not give and increase my distance and start to jog and short sprint burst. My weight dropped from 75 kg to 67 in 3 months which i am still maintaining now. My blood sugar drop to within normal level and I reduce my metformin tablet slowly without confessing to my doctors. Thus I continue to take the normal supply faithfully. Within 9 months after reducing from 1000 mg to 500 mg to 250 to zero, my blood sugar was still between 4 to 4.5 and I told my doctor I have not being taking the medicine.

It has been 4 years now, and my yearly health screening clearly indicate no sign of diabetes. I have those medical records to show if any one of you wish to.

Coming back to whether, I eat mangoes, yes I do but I no longer monitor my blood sugar. I love durian which is a no no for diabetes but I have no issue with it now.

    My advice ;
    1) For those who are daibetics and on insulin, yes do monitor your blood sugar regularly
    2) For those who are overweight and eating rich food, and having dangerouly high
blood sugar of around 6 constantly. Do change your sedentary and food lifestyle as you are now pre- diabetic. Once you cross the line, it is not irreversible for everyone. Quickly bring down your BMI .

I now have quite fair bit of metformin pills ( accumulated but not taking when on treatment) . Believe medicine have much longer shell life. I have yet to throw them away and not sure if it is of any use to any one out there on the same metformin treatment. I amprepared to give away if it can save some medical cost for you but do consult your doctor first

I still maintain a diet and exrcise plan though my BMI just exceeded that for my height very slightly.

For those who are keen on what causes cancers, as there is no attachement allowed in SHC forum, you can write to me at ngsngl@yahoo.com.sg

  6. Hi Dan

You don’t have to take such drastic measures; but to seriously make changes to your diet and lifestyle.

If you have Type 1 Diabetes, then taking insulin is for life. Type 2 is the more common malady.

Diabetics should have 5-6 small regular meals per day. This is so that you control your sugar spikes. Not all carbs are bad; go for low GI (glycaemic index) foods. eg ‘Sunshine’ and ‘Gardenia’ has low GI bread. Brown / unpolished rice is OK for you. (White rice / bread is definitely a no-no.) Be aware of ‘hidden sugars’ – what do not taste sweet but have sugar incorporated into the food – read labels of foods.

Not all fruits are suitable as some have rather high sugar content. Some fruits may be eaten before they get too ripe – eg eat bananas before they get too yellow and spotted. When too yellow and spotted, the sugar in the fruit is well-developed, thus not good for you.

Change to alkaline water – this will possibly lower your blood sugar, but over a fairly long period of time (depends how much water you drink).

You definite need lots of exercise for your medical issue.

    There is a great deal of info on-line – check with – realage.com – hpb.gov.sg

    Take care of your health.

  7. Hi Winnie,
I already know what to source for from the dry market as an alternative food to consume. Given time i may list them all here. Thanks for the advice.
Hi Lau, from your sharing you have given us a lot of hope that it can be done. I will still go on this regime with high expectation.
Thanks Sockie for sharing and concern too. Alkaline water is highly recommended but I find the machine too costly at a tune of almost $5K.
Hi Kristy, I will certainly inform you once I am ready to start. Wat I need now is a kick in the butt!
    Dan

  8. Thanks Sockie for pointing it out.
Seok Cheng, a thousand apologies as this is the second time I committed such a misjudgement. I guess it early dementia and I got to dip into more Gingko Biloba to remain sane.
Another problem is my hearing. Just today I pick up a lady wanting to go to Store Hub in Kallang Way. She specify to go by ECP and out by Fort Road. I said no it better to take a shorter cut going by CTE and PIE into Kallang Way. She concluded that since I am the driver it better be right. I check my Google Maps and it said it take about 18 minutes to reach and when we reach the destination she wail no, no. I want to go to Sport Hub, Kallang Wave. Aah ya kesian I think I am not good to be a taxi driver.

  9. Hi Dan

Let’s Dump this mind set abt our brain/eyes/ear r failing us when a cruel or discouraging thought pass through our mind.
It’s not uncommon for elderly who r still in d workforce to encounter problems similar like yours. Once a taxi driver also got my destination wrong n he refuse to accept my full payment, so don’t quit unless yr job is no longer worth hanging on to……………Good luck

  10. Freda,
I do not bemoan with regret my shortcomings but rather taking opportunity to laugh at life and myself that I am capable of such comedy of error. Thanks for the concern,

  11. Hi Dan,
I am also a cab driver and presently looking out for a new hirer. My health is about ok i guess except i got high cholesterol level, am taking medicine and looking after my weight. Just write to say hello and maybe catch up face to face sometime.
You’re right, sometime we got pax’s destination wrong and felt really really bad despite our counter referencing.
Anyway keep things positive and best of luck. Cheers;p

  12. Thanks Leow for sharing again. I am into my third month as a hirer and still looking for a relief or super relief driver. Just realized that Smrt is coming up with a 2 hirers scheme and I see hope there.
Steven, vegetarian meals would be good but the worrying factor is the cooking oils used. A drastic change is needed here for me.

  13. I am going on a no meat fast for 3 months. That was 6 months ago and I finally started on it. My attempt fall flat from day one.
Breakfast should be just fruits, that was easy. Lunch and dinner, just rice and organics toppings like raisins, bird seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and dried cranberries.
Got myself a rice-cooker and finally cooked rice for lunch and dinner. So far so good.
No curries, no laksa, no roti prata, no trotters, no eggs, no fish and no vegetables if oil is use in cooking. Life is pretty boring, those were my favourite pastimes.
Christy, I started oredi, are you ready to follow me?
    Dan.
