One SHC member will be appointed to write the monthly update, each month

Hi SHCians,

I have been thinking it is rathering boring to read the monthly updates, written by Terence.  To give it some oomph, I would ask one SHC member to write the monthly update.  This should make the update more readable and enjoyable.

Generally, the monthly update should carry some information on the events in the coming month, plus some exciting reflection.  I shall then arrange to send out the monthly updates.  Should not be too long, averaging half a screen.  We shall try this for one year.  Have fun.

  1. Here is the July monthly news update, written by Paul Kong.

    Hi fellow SHCians,
My name is Paul Kong, and I have been given the honour this month to write the monthly update. We are now in the middle of2009, and I like to share with you some of thewonderful eventsI have participated.

    Perth Trip: 5th to12th April2009
Starting with Perth, wehad Stephen and Mary (SHC membersin Perth) to pick us up at the airport. Westayed withPatrick/Agnes and Mary/Stephen. Ourgroup includedTerence, Gwyneth,Veronique,Lisa,Grace, Kristin,Eileen, Peggy and myself.Agnes, nickname Super Mum pampered us with Singaporean delights and fried andsteamed fish.Shealso baked nice fragrant fresh bread. The night before leaving for Cervantes fishing trip, she was still in the kitchen at 11pm preparing food to bring along whileI went to bed.
Lisa Ong, nickname Mother Hen was another lady with a big heart. She had a persistence cough, shared her medicine with me, and practically spoon fed me periodically. AtCervantes, we were impressed with the natural rock formation at Pinnacles and the accompanying sunset. Atthe chalets, we huddled together for a romantic lobster dinner. Thereafter, the group suffered a bout of stomach cramps, not from thefood but from applying too much “buay kia yu” (no fear oil) paddled by Hou Chong (SHC Perth). Upon return to Perth,Patrick and Agnes wentout tobuy’lor han kor’, and cook it to nurse my cough. The ladieslater laced their throat with it andkaraoked the nite away.

Batu Pahat trip: 23rd to 24th May 2009
Iled thisMalaysia road trip, but it was more a ‘makan trip’ than a tour. But this did not stop Sam from trying his “huat ah” (to prosper) after visiting the giant fish at Sergenting. We had ourdurian fix in JB and had aroad side party.Played anIQ (Sang Kenchil) test to seehow ‘Malaysian’we are, andJane Kee leaked out the answer that Sang Kenchilis a car. Now, when is the next trip, everybody is asking.

    Padang Trip: 28th to 30th May 2009
I joined another trip, this time to Sumatra. Lisa Ongoverseed most parts of the tripfrom food ordering, to check in,pairing hotel room, and collection of monies to pay various merchants.EO Chin roped in his good friend Tham andput the freshest lobsters on our dinner plates. After a full day at thewaterfall, shopping and dinner, wewent forkaraoke, before a good night sleep.
So, if you are looking out to join other SHCians for other activities this month, have a glance here. For details, visit http://www.SilverHairsClub.com.

  3. April update is written by our Club Manager Dolly Lim.

    Hello SHCians, friends and buddies!

Have been pondering on what to write since the day, Terence requested me to do a monthly write up. Wow, writing composition is tough and never my forte leh. I first joined the SilverhairsClub with a good friend of mine in Y2005 after we saw an advt placed by Terence in singnet website. While friend is no longer SHCian but I chose to stay on as I was on the along the way making more new friends and buddies after attending numerous monthly gatherings and pot luck at ECP.

My first experience as EO for the SHC First D&D 2007 at SGCC did actually linked me even closer to the club. Given a chance to organise an event with a mindset of being price reasonable and food good so that all SHCians can attend. It was out there that I met up with more members given that fact we might be of different backgrounds, characters and personalities but at the end of day, all of us are still friends till today, right? Choose not to list the long list of names of frens/buddies here as don’t wish to make this write-up a boring one lor.. but I am sure you know who I am referring to rite. All I wanted to say is that miracle do happen in SHC, just like Lily and me, two different personalities but had been buddy since our Bangkok trip. By now, I am sure that everyone iin SHC knew that there are always spoilt for choices, be it indoor or outdoor activities. I hope to see more members come forward to volunteer as EOs to help organise activities as I am sure in SHC, we do have members with such capabilities.

List of activities for Y2009 as below which hopefully can be materialised in next couple of months.

    1) Pot Luck/Picnic at the floating deck at Bedok Reservoir.
    2) Hokkien Karaoke for a start, followed up other dialects later
    3) Talentime
    4) Chori Chor Nite
    5) More budgeted tour travels make available for members to select.
    6) Game Day and many others

However, cost should be keep low so as to encourage more participations from members. Over the years, more and more activities had been continuously organized by some of these selfless volunteers – A very big thank you to all of you as without you, all these activities can never be formed at all..

Just log on and you are spoilt/headache for choices!
Here are some happenings taking place in May 2009.

May 1 – Kelong at Batam
May 1 – Charity Lunch at SJ Home
May 12 – Monthly Gathering at Han’s Café
May 22 – Malaysia Trip to Johor or Malacca?
And the usual activities, eg cycling, walking, badminton, bowling, golfing

Hope to see all of you in these activities soon. BTW, if anyone got ideas to share with me with regards to the events, pls feel free to write to me for a discussion, I am open to any ideas.. ok…

  4. Hi Susan C,

Your write-up was well-written. You Kept It Short and Simple

It was a pleasure to work with you on the Sarong Kebaya Catwalk Fashion Show held last month. Thanks for being my co-EO

    Cheers
    Dennis

  5. Hi Sue,

It was good reading this personalsied update, to know of your experiences with SHC and to know more about you. After all you never did post your profile.

  6. Dear fellow members,

This month is my turn to do a write-up for SHC Dec Monthly Update, and I am most delighted to share with you all the wonderful activities one can find within SilverhairsClub, without having to yammer & whine about the injustices of life!

To start off, I joined SHC as a member since April 2007. If I can vividly recall, my first participation was the 1st Flea Mart held on 15 March ’08 @ 18, Bali Lane. I met several members there with exchange of contact numbers and picked up some useful tips on proper handling and trading of our CPF investments etc. At this Flea Mart, I was introduced to Dan Huang, a bowling & dance enthusiast, who has been arranging bowling sessions on several occasions. As my main interests are bowling, dancing and travelling, I participated in these activities, which has led me to meet up with more members of similar interests, thereby enhancing & widening my circle of social contacts. Having attended the Annual D & D held @ The Pines in March this year, I was privileged to be introduced to more new members through an extremely affable member, Ms Molly Chua. Henceforth, I made an effort to attend SHC Monthly Gatherings held at different venues, to meet up with existing members, maintaining my rapport with them, as well as getting to know more new members. It is indeed heartening to know that most SHCians have their own talents in organizing different activities to cater to members’ interest, and that prompted me to team up with Dennis Wee, to hold a Kebaya Catwalk Fashion Show held last month.

Without further ado, I would like to highlight the following main events to encourage members’ participation:

    Updates for December 2008 & January 2009
    Monthly Meeting – Dec 17, 2008 @ Han’s, Upper Pickering Street. http://silverhairsclub.com/2008/11/2281.

    2009 Countdown Party – Dec 31, 2008 @ Safra Mount Faber http://silverhairsclub.com/2008/10/2190.

    Stars-in-Concert – Jan 11, 2009 @ Serangoon Gardens Country Club http://silverhairsclub.com/2008/10/2230.

Taking this opportunity, I would like to wish you and all members a Blessed X’mas & Rewarding Years Ahead!

  7. Hello Nor-Sayang,

    Anda menulis sangat baik,yo!

Thank you for sharing with us your experiences within SHC. Having read your detailed ‘report’, I do agree with you that there’s indeed several talented SHCians among us, and its only through participation in events, that we get to discover and know them better, ya.

Boleh berjumpa lagi di Nov ke-18?

    Cheers!

  8. Here’s our monthly update for 3 Nov 2008, written by Norlinda.

    Hello SHCians, friends and buddies!

When Terence approached me to write this monthly write up, I went, “Wow!” It has been a long time since I wrote and I only know how to deal with facts and figures in my working environment besides like to cakap-cakap! Nonetheless, I am honoured to be picked this time.

I joined the SilverHairsClub after much persuasion from my dear friend Susan Chang (Suzchang) and my childhood buddy AhNee who has also been, and still is, my colleague for over 20 years! (Hmm… Have we been together for the longest time or what?,hehe!)

My first experience with SHC was attending the Dinner & Dance in 2007. I was hesitant at first as I didn’t know what to expect. To my surprise, most of the people, I met were very friendly and we ‘clicked’ even within the shortest time we talked. It was so fun! Watching the show, I was especially impressed by our dancing queen Lily Ho, with her slim figure and swaying graceful moves – she was a natural! I was envious! With the encouragement of the ever energetic, bubbly and funny host Miss Dolly, I was eager to join the dancefloor but I was very ‘malu’ because everyone seemed so proficient and I thought I was the odd one out, a black swan! Susah lah… So poor thing but still I timidly tried to fit in. I told myself that I had to learn the moves, after which I joined the dancing classes organized by Dan Huang, the never-give-up guy who is very passionate about, and committed to, his work. My lessons ended shortly when my hubby found out that there were so many guys in the club. All the while, he thought the SilverHairsClub to be an all girls club! Hehe! Apa macam? Well, at least I got the chance to dance and performed at this year’s Dinner & Dance, if some of you can remember?

I am glad to have joined this unique club as I’ve made so many new friends. After joining, I became even busier, always chatting in the forums, at times even giggling to myself staring at the posts reading jokes and interacting with cyberfriends. I think I’m gonna be doing this for quite a while.

What I like about our club is that it has many members from all walks of life. I even got to mingle with retirees! It’s a wonderful privilege to be able to hear their stories and experiences. I will surely cherish and treasure their honesty and openness.

There are so many indoor and outdoor activities. If you notice, I am always at the cycling & Monthly gathering. I tried to join as many outings but usually weekends is reserved for my own family lah.. I also love to go holidays & got so many kakis, looking forward to the coming MaeHongSon & Chiangmai trip.

Just log on and you are spoilt/headache for choices!

Here are some happenings taking place in November 2008.

Come meet us and check it out!

Sat 8 Nov, 4pm – Tree Top Walk
    Sat 15 Nov, 4pm – Monthly Cycling
    Wed 18 Nov,3pm to 9pm – SHC Monthly Gathering
Thu 20-29 Nov – Dream Trip to MaeHongSon and Chiang Mai
Thu 27 Nov, 6pm – Self Development Talk
Looking forward to more good times, and eager to meet all of you.

    I am Norlinda M.A, signing out…

    Thank You…. & smile!

  9. Hi Fellow SHCians,

Here’s this month’s update at SilverHairsClub.

My name is Ron Lai, and I joined Silverhairsclub about two years ago with my wife, Alice. This has since led us to a bigger circle of friends. We also encourage others to do so, as and when we have the opportunity. With Silverhairs themselves, organising many activities, members, in general, would not loose touch with one another, fostering greater friendships and growth of the SilverHairsClub for years to come.

August is the month, Singapore celebrates the nation-hood of its 43rd National Day. As members of the SilverHairsClub, we join in to celebrate this joyous
occasion, organising various activities to meet members’ interests, participations and enjoyment for the whole month of August and months to come.

What’s upmost in our mind in the past weeks, was the news interview of our founder, Terence Seah with the Straits Times, reporting on the SilverHairsClub, especially the subject of “Baby Boomers”. The interview highlights the functions of SilverHairsClub to the public encouraging them to come forward and join the club. We have since had more than 500 new members joining us.

We were also informed by Terence that he would be stepping down and relinguishing his post in the year 2010. Until then, a successor would have to be found to take over his place, giving him the opportunity to lead a “new life” at the age of 55, where he would have more free time to run his own business, and spending more time with his family in Thailand.

Since the inception of SilverHairsClub in 2004 and noting his intention to give up his role at SilverHairsClub, I have some reservations. Terence Seah should hold the reign, as a “figure-head”, and pass the daily routine to
    someone else to handle.

In the days ahead, we will see various activities coming up, organised by SHCians. The monthly cycling event on 16th Aug organised by Yew Kwong, will start off as usual at the East Coast Parkway. This will be followed by an
overnight camping also on the same date, at the same venue, to be led by Terence until the morning of Aug.17th where we will have our August monthly gathering at the Burger King outlet.

On Aug.23rd and 24th, we have an organised trip to Kukup, Johore, by Dan Huang, where members will enjoy fishing, dancing, mahjong games and sight-seeing.

On Aug. 30th, June Lim is organising a “Saturday Nite Fever” at the Oxford Hotel. The response from members is overwhelming. They will be looking out for a night of dancing, fun and games.

On Aug.31st we have the Investment cum Retirement Talk, which has pulled in lots of interested members wanting to enrich their knowledge. These talks will be conducted and moderated by Eleanor Chan, K.T. Wong and Ronald Wie.

Other events, such as the Self-development Talk, organised by Robert Quek, will be held at the Intercontinental Hotel on Aug.28th. The Heart Rock Concert, organised by myself will be held at Marina Floating Bay on Aug. 16th. Those of you who are interested, please do not hesitate to contact Dan Huang, Tel: 90996602, a few tickets are still available at $10 each.

Members, do come forward and enjoy yourselves, participate in any event you like, interact and make more friends, that’s what the world should be.

  10. Hi Lina

Congratulations to a well written piece – Precise and Concise. Thanks to the (we know who) ‘accident perpertrator’ who brought you to us @ SHC. YOU – have certainly added to the colours. Keep it up. :)

  11. Lina Ng has finished writing the end July 2008 news update which will be sent to all members by tomorrow. Lina is a very colorful lady in SHC. Do get to be introduced to her, when you come to the monthly gatherings.

    “Hi friends,

In Oct. 2007 I joined SHC by accident. And I mean, a real accident, literally! This fellow SHCian reversed into my car and in our subsequent conversation, introduced me to the club. He told me that I would find many friends and have lots of fun. Indeed, he was right. My initial apprehension of meeting ‘strangers’ evaporated. Before long, I made many new friends and participated in many organized activities. I found my ‘kakis’ and every weekend we find lots of things to do. Goodbye, boredom!

SHC offers a myriad of activities, some on a regular basis, some ad hoc, while some only exist in cyberspace. You get to enjoy Catherine’s jokes, Dolly’s hokkien English, Tim’s wisecracks, Dan’s never-ending dance classes, Yew Kwong’s cycling and IT workshops, Christina’s scenic walks and Lily’s partying, Terence’s monthly ‘get to know you gathering’, Robert’s self- improvement classes and ‘always free’ concerts, Steven’s ‘makan’ and lots more from others.

What I found most comforting is the ease at which I get to make new friends. Just introduce yourself on the website and the friendly responses from members will turn into friendly faces…. soon you think you have known them for ages. All your inhibitions just fly out the window!

Don’t expect to meet people with lots of silver hair though – they are mostly black! There is also no shortage of jokers and colourful personalities.

SHC culture is most commendable. It’s culture has actually evolved as the club matures with age. It happily respects the individual’s rights and views, and leaves a lot of space for initiative and creativity. So, what are you waiting for? Get your friends to sign up and join our activities!

    What’s coming up in August:
    Sat 2 …. 4.15pm …. Monthly Walk – Pipeline Ramble II.
    Sat 16 … 4.00pm … Monthly cycling at ECP.
Sat 16…. 12.00pm … Overnite camping at ECP.
Sun 17… 8.00am …. SHC Gathering at Burger King.
    Sat 23 …. 6.00am … Overnite Kukup Fishing Village.
Thurs 28.. 6.00pm … Self Development Talk – The leadership challenge.
Sat 30 …. 7.00pm … Saturday Nite Fever at Oxford Hotel.

Check the website for details. See you at the activities.

    Regards, Lina Ng”

  12. June Lim felt my writing of the monthly update was boring. Then, we had Oi Cheng, and Yew Kwong. And, we had positive feedback. Someone wrote to me and suggested we publish the monthly update. Well, and yes, we should. So, I am putting up Dan Huang’s mid July 2008 update. The next update shall come from Lina Ng, sometime end July. Terence Seah

Subject: SHC July update – gathering 16 Jul 2008
    Hi fellow SHCians,

My name is Dan Huang. This month, I am writing the SHC monthly update. Since joining the SilverHairsClub, I had been kept busy. I get excited whenever I log into the website. There are so many friends to meet, so many activities to participate.

My first sport session in SHC was badminton. There was problem of getting court to play. Sometimes it’s hard to please everyone in terms of time and location. Once I was the only player to turn up!

This month write-up, I want to share my passion for dancing. The first posting I put up was on Salsacize, response was poor due to the location being in Jalan Bukit Merah! Next venue was at Dance Passion at King’s George’s Avenue. Class on Cha Cha Cha attract a good mix of dancers, we have about 15 who signed up. It was followed by class on Rock n Roll. We really enjoyed the time of learning together and adjourn to supper after each class. Close bond was formed.

Somehow not everyone was satisfied with the dance arrangement. Through some introducing from fellow SHCians we rope in another dance teacher to teach us. Class on Rumba was decided. Response was overwhelming and we have to split into two classes on different day of the week because we have about 30 who signed up. From Rumba we went into learning Disco Rock. Still dissatisfaction set in, issue of cramp space, no parquet floor, and no mirror!

Next venue was at Bishan Community Club. Waltz class was decided, response was poor, not enough to start a class. We then decide that if not enough pax, the next course of action is to join an ongoing class. Right now eight of us are learning Rhythm and Waltz at Geylang Bahru.

It seems that there are many who want to take up dancing, just that the location and the cost must be right. Through the efforts of Joy Chuang we found a place in Clementi CC. The teacher was good, the fees were even better! We started with basic Rock n Roll and Square Rumba, about 20 signed up. Next we went in Retro Dance, Intermediate Rock n Roll and Bachata!

Looking back, I must say that we have more than 70 who can dance in SHC! The jams sessions we attend are The Dance Floor at Safra Mount Faber, Serangoon Gardens Country Club, Singapore Recreation Club and Raffles Town Club.

I am determine to learn as many dance types as possible. I do hope that fellow members of SHC will join me in this pursuit of gracious living.. Let’s all learn to grow ‘young’ graciously!

The month of June started off with a record attendance at the monthly social gatherings! Thanks to the sole effort of Grace Wong, most of us were given a uniquely designed name tags. Some of us were given live demonstration in the art of origami by Ron Koh. At the other corner at Han Cafe, Karen Thio attracted the attention of eager beagles in the art of crystal crafts and too many others to mention here!

The visit to the Organic Farm was another interesting place! Tian Soo and his wife gave an educational tour of the various kind of plants and its usefulness as a healthy form of food for consumption.

Next, our visit to the Palm Oil Mill. To the layman like us, most was not sure what to expect. The host was very nice to entertain us to free lunch and dinner. Eight of us were brought to Kota Tinggi to be given a close-up view of the different processes involved before the final products evolved. The host was a very humble who own more than 2700 acres of lands for the cultivation and growth of Palm Oil! At the end of the tour, we visited the residential and commercial properties he owned!

We had another Dinner & Dance event organized by our dance teacher Miss Maggie Ho. Two tables were booked by us. Lots of games and dancing! When it ended, we wanted more and decided to adjourn to the Dance Floor at Safra Mount Faber!

The crystal craft class by Karen Thio was another popular event! Out of the twenty, we have three guys who attended. Yew Kwong, Douglas and Boon Liang were all ears and eyes trying to learn the delicate processes of putting the craft together.

Our weekly class on a Monday on Rhythm n Waltz has ended. The Friday classes on Retro Dance, Intermediate Roll n Roll and Bachata will end in three weeks time. Next, we are on to Cha Cha, Samba and Rhythm and Waltz, three hours in a row!

As can be seen, we at Silverhairs Club have so much to live for! Visit http://www.SilverHairsClub.com for more details.

The coming monthly gathering will be held on Wed, 16 July at Kovan. To register, please click here http://silverhairsclub.com/2008/06/1821
