  1. Hi Terence

Cannot see them. Some link problems?

Also, when will you be posting the Tian Soo and Poison Ivy’s farm visit pictures that Ron Lai has sent to you ?

    Thank you.

  2. EO’s for the sembawang walk.
Apologies. Forgot to thank you all for a lovely and relaxing walk. Sembawang Park is another place I will keep in mind for a later visit, especially that quaint restaurant by the beach, with its unusual roof top balcony. Wish we had had the time to survey it.
Thank you once again and will look forward to the next one.

  3. Hi EOs for the Sembawang Walk, thank you very much for organising the walk. I enjoyed the event very much and am looking foraward to the walk at Bedok Reservior.

  4. Hi EO(Walking)

I hope its Bedok Reservoir for the next walk. If I may recall, we were told that its one of the venues slated for our walks – soon.

Many thanks for all the planning and leading. I had to skip the previous two because of family commitments.

  5. King Seng, Caroline,
Is that the next venue? It’s quite a nice area too and much nearer my home, so I will most likely be going if it’s on.

  6. Mary Chan

U are lucky is near your place but very far from my place. I will try my veyr best join u people for all the walk.

    See U

    karen

  7. No lah Mary. Just hoping that it is. Lets wait and see what the EO says. Keeping my fingers crossed tho’

Its nearer to my home too :)thats why I like. Better not say too much otherwise people will say, if you enjoy something, distance is not a problem.

Aiyah Kranji I will also go but its just having the cake and eating it too hehehe!

  8. Caroline,
Kranji is worth making a trip to. I went a few times and it was fun, but very warm.
So, will you be joining in the Changi Beach Club gathering with Terence?
This time round, I will swim if you will, hehe.

  9. Hi Charles #15

I am not a leader no matter how hard I try. However, I am most happy to assist in any way, to help the event organisers and lighten their load.

You all have done a good job and I am sure we appreciate the good work done.

    Thanks

    King Seng

I notice that most of the photos taken of outdoor SHC activities are usually focused on fellow SHCians. Nothing wrong with that, but surely we come across more than just fellow SHCians during monthly walks, etc. It would be great if some photos of the scenery, fauna, flora, unusual sights, etc could be included as well.

Such photos could encourage others to get off their comfy sofas and join future SHC activities.

Yes the photos are taken by Charles Wee and me.

Will bear Ron’s comments in mind when taking pictures of future monthly walk.

    Thanks Ron

  12. Charistina – Have u ppl organise walk at Bukit Timah Nature – my son lead me the way where the cyclist use – it take about an hour half and very interesting.

Charles Wee – have u been there

  13. Hi Charles W and Christina,

Thanks very much for always arranging the walks. Unfortunately our gratitude is sometimes silent but always there.

Call me if you want to try very good dam briyani or ‘lor mee’ in town. I am prepared to drive down and ferry you, but it must be early as they usually finish early.

    Gratefully

  14. Ron K. I agree with your #19. When I travel, I usually shoot the scenery with the people in it when possible. perhaps those with cameras should keep this in mind the next time.

  15. Charles Chua,
Is the offer of “very good dam briyani or ‘lor mee'” only for Charles W and Christina? Can I tag along too? I very ‘yeow kwee’ to try the fantastic ‘lor mee’ you were telling us about.I will be a good girl and help to queue up and pay my share. Hee.
    Btw, what is ‘dam briyani’?

  16. Hi Mary C,

No problem, let’s wait for a few days to see their response. I need a book to accompany the ‘lor mee’.

‘Dam’ means steam in Tamil (I think, or at least in Indian if there is a generic Indian language). The mutton, chicken or fish is steamed in the basmati rice with the other spices, till the flavours are infused into the rice, ala our claypot chicken rice.

Once you eat that, you won’t eat other types of briyani.

  17. CharlesChua, thanks for your offer to introduce ‘very good biyani & lor mee’. If you free lets fix a date for next week, early morning. Good if we can get another two to make it a foursome in your car ok? If place is accessible by mrt, more SHC could join in.

  18. Hi Charles W, Christina C and Mary C @26 and 27,

Ok, I am free on Mon., Wed.and Thur. Take your pick. I can pick you up from the Outram Rd MRT stn. Ideally we should meet about 11.15 to 11.30am because any earlier and they are not open, any if later, they might be sold out. I still have space for 2 more for those interested.

  19. Charles Chua, I can make it on Mon and Thurs. Wed is a bit rushed for me as I have a class later in the day. Thanks for organising this. I will see if Nora and Clara are interested. Will let you know later in the day ok?

  20. Hi Charles W @31,

Ok lunch is confirmed on Thur, May 22nd, at 11.15 am. I will wait for you at Outram Rd MRT stn. There are still 3 places for those interested, first come first served.

  21. Do you have the name and address of the place selling the dam briyani? Sounds too tantalizing to miss. Would like to drop by sometime, as I am unlikely to be able to join in on 22/5.

    Cheers,

    Ron

  22. Hi Ron K @ 33,

If you like briyani, here are some recommendations,

Geylang Serai hawker centre has 2, an Indian muslim and another stall by 2 Malay ladies (recommended by Dennis Wee).
Over in Little India there are 2 restaurants, Blue Diamond in Buffalo Rd and Goldfinger in Norris Rd.

Over in Kandahar St there’s a coffeeshop that sells all kinds of briyani, Arab, Pakistani, Iranian etc. In fact all the enemies of the USA have their briyanis there. It is at the beginning of Kandahar Str opposite the well-known Pariaman’s, the Nasi Padang coffeeshop.

We are either going to have ‘lor mee’ or briyani, depending on the consensus, next Thur, May 22nd. For the briyani, go to the Malayan Railway station. There are 2 stalls there, a Malay stall called ‘Ali’s’. His is typical of the Malay kenduri type you find in the mosques or weddings. The other is run by an Indian muslim who sells briyani with a number of curries, crab, prawn, mutton and chicken. Strictly his is not ‘steamed’, but you should try the mutton and chicken curries.

So take your pick, or book a place with us and enjoy. I once brought an Indian friend to eat there. Initially he was disappointed with (I think) the place, and having to eat a ‘one-dish meal’. Later he confessed that even thought he was disappointed to eat Indian food in Sgp, he had to admit the mutton was very good. Choose the mutton that comes with a bone.

Be warned that this is not healthy food. In fact it is the opposite. Sometimes I think it is not only a ‘one-dish meal’, it is also a ‘one-meal-a-day-dish’. I don’t know if it is the basmati rice or the ghee or both that sustains you to the end of the day.

After you try the above and still want more I can recommend the prawn briyani at Chat Masala’s

  23. Charles:

Thanks for your list of recommendations @ #34.

Briyani is what my doctor would call a ‘don’t even think of it’ food. but dam briyani sounds interesting. :o)

    Cheers,

    Ron

  24. You know what they say, “The wages of Sin is Death, but the perks ae lovely”

Try it and give me your feedback.

I forgot, the Islamic restaurant also has good dam briyani but they are closed for renovations. Avoid the ‘roti Mariam’ tho’.

  25. Hi CharlesC

Since you will be bringing them to eat “lor mee”, I would suggest these two stalls:

Blk 155A, Bukit Batok West Ave 8 opens 8.30am to 1.30pm.

Blk l09 Bukit Permei Rd 301-157 opens 7.30am to 3.30pm.

There’s is another stall of “lor mee” at Old Airport Rd new hawker ctr, center facing the main road did’nt take note of the unit number,
is just as good, with thick black sauce n lots of fish, (always long queue).

  26. Hi Ron

Shall we meet at Old Kallang Airport food complex this Friday for lunch?

Reminiscence of good old days of 60s to almost 2000. My parents lived till their ripe old age.

I was having my primary education (Mountbatten English School) just opposite the food/shopping complex. It was then 2/3 blocks of three-storey housing units.

Shall we call Alan and Ann too?

    Cheers,

  27. Hi Ron Lai,

We are eating the Bkt Purmei ‘lor mee’ subject to the consensus on that day. Is the one in Bkt Batok related to the one in Bkt Purmei? I may have read about it but am not familiar with Bkt Batok stall.

Why don’t you and your missus join us that day? Build up a good appetite before your tea dance in SGCC?

  28. Aiyoh Charles Chua, I think it’s not such a good idea befriending you leh. We are all going to end up ‘fatty bomb bomb’ soon. Food, food and more fattening food.
Eh, how come you are not one huh?

  29. CharlesChua,
A thousand apologies, i cannot make it for the makan next Thurs, May 22nd, You all go ahead and have a good time, ok?
