What SilverhairsClub means to me.

I was first introduced to SHC by a dear church friend Pheng Sok in March 2007. The first event attended was at the Botanic Garden where the Singapore Chinese Orchestra performed.

I get to meet lot of friend during this visit, like Maria, Lina Tan, Joy and many others. Friend who has been with me till today. To mention them would fill a full page! From then on, it’s the event at Batam, where new friend like Lily, Dolly, Yew Kwong, Tim and Terence I get to meet. I must say that I certainly feel very comfortable with this group of friend. There was lot of fun and laughter. Friend whom I could talk to without putting up a guard.

After this experience of meeting all of them, I begin to look forward to new event to attend. But new events are not forthcoming. I then decide that I should try to organize them and get member to attend. That where I try to organize the Cruise trip to Redang and Kuala Lumpur, bus response was poor. In the course of time I get to meet more new friend like Lina Ng, John Howe, Boon Liang, Eliza, Ah nee, Susan Chan, Susan Chang, Chian Wah and Jessie Teo and Caroline Gee..

Not a person to give up easily, I decide to introduce badminton, dancing and bowling to the club.. These are the activities I enjoy thoroughly and why not get other who are like-minded to join in. More friend I get to meet are, Ronald Wie, Rene, KK Loh, Bira, Peng Peng, Wee Chin, Nor, Marg Tian, Alfred, Alice Seah and Eileen lee.

I must say that I do find satisfaction here in meeting new friend through the various activities, I realized that life can begin at forty-five and there so much to look forward to. There are so many things to share, which would fill pages and pages here. I am sure many other members here felt the same way and I look forward to your sharing with us.

  1. Hi Dan Huang,

I storngly agreed that what you mentioned “Life can begin at forty-five” onward. I feel this should be the time for us to meet around with the friends & join more activitys to lighten our senior citizen life. During our young age, I believed most of us will be attached to our family to take care of our child & work hard to achieve in our life, hardly got time for people like us to relax.

    Thank you!

    Judy

  2. No man is an island. Neither is woman. But put one man and one woman on an island? Hmmm, that would be interesting.

I digress. SHC has been a great blessing to me as I have met many new people and made new friends. I have also enjoyed the many activities like Friday night dancing, Annual D&D, Talentime, etc.

    Way to go SHC!

  3. Hi Dan, Joy and Judy,

I have similar experience with SHC as you. No one planned SHC as it is today. Privately, I have as much surprises and pleasure seeing so many new friends. Personally, I prefer male company, and still think I will always. Too many to mention, but I see the guys in SilverHairsClub make genuine companions. The gals are brave, love to travel, dance, eat and great at small chats. Many are strong willed, have big bright eyes and determined to live to a ripe age of 95.

I am still surprised with what’s happening in the club. Thank’s Dan for initiating this though. Other SHCians, share your experience with us.

  4. It is good, for a change, to read something as delightful as this and to share. I am not one who normally shares her private thoughts openly. This would be an exception.

I haven’t been to the website as frequently as I did, because apart from being busy, there were just too many unpleasant bickerings & nasty squabblings “glaring” back at me each time I logged in. Hope this wave has rolled out and will never roll back…

Time flies. I have just celebrated my first anniversary with SHC. Congratulations to myself! :-) Over this period, despite my very busy schedule, I’ve never had a dull moment. Participated in many activities and enjoyed most of them. Met many nice, kind & friendly members. Treasure those who became my close and sincere friends. Lost one or two in the process. Heartbreaking, but that’s the way of life… people come, people go. I try to think of happy times spent together and gripe not the unhappy moments. I should say this past year’s happenings have added a new enriching chapter to my life. Feel blessed.

I shall continue my role as an active member, supporting SHC activities whenever my time permits. As the years go along, perhaps grow old graciously with its members and the CLUB too…

    Have a good weekend!

  5. Hi Judy, Joy, Terence n Gingko,

Thanks for sharing with us here your thoughts.

Terence, surprised to hear that you prefer male companions. Well, I can’t say the same, I prefer female companions but having guys around does spice it up!

Joy, I concurred that life would be interesting given that proposition!

Gingko, whatsoever that is good, lovely and of good report we shall share it here. Indeed the storms has just subside and we look forward to the calming effect. Congratulations, to your 1st anniversary with SHC!

There are many other friend which I left out, there are Cat Yeo, Agnes Tan, Oi Cheng, Mary Chan, Ronald Lee, Roland Tong, Ron Koh and the list is endless! Sorry for the forgetfullness!

  6. Hi Dan/Terence

Thanks for the post and Terence thanks for SHC. I join SHC in March 2004. My first event was the meeting, which we have monthly now, at the cafe in Raffles Place, it was in April 2004, sorry forgotten the date. The attendees were few as compared to this week. My lastest and best experience was the Kelong trip.

Yes, agreed with our dear Gingko, we make good new friends. Good friendship take two hands to clap, if one dont clap well, move on. In life there is always a future and a hope in everything. Dont look back, if you do,reflect on the good times, bury the bad. We have manys friends in and out of SHC. I really would like to attend most of the events, but time is often the factor that make it a miss.

Glad that we have many new members who organise new events. To all my friends in SHC, enjoy the events and live happily.

    See U all.
    Gwen

  7. Hi Dan,

Grateful you started this post. I learnt about SHC from Terence and joined in early 2006. Nov 2006 I had a jolly good chat with Caroline Gee, Susan Chang, Ah Nee, Nor, Ronald, Margaret and others…then I went out with Susan Chang when she came to Perth in 2007. I met you, Tim, Gwyneth and many more at Hotboys kelong. This week Catherine Ho and I travelled to Geraldton & Kalbarri (north of Perth) – like we knew each other since young.

Thank you SHCians for the friendship though I live in Perth. Looking forward to meeting more members.

    Mary Lee (from Perth)

  8. Ter prefers guys? If so, you could have fooled me there. Must be great female impersonators.

Dan, don’t patronize. Take the Queen forcibly. Kill the King. Take no prisoners. Check and mate.

    Hee-hee

SHC’s been a life changing experience. I am still wondering whether its up or down. But one thing for sure. It’s been a great ride in the company of great people. I won’t change it for anything.

  9. Ya! ya! ya! Terence,

Even though I have similar experience as you. If I talk and write like you did in #3 “Personally, I prefer male company….” I will be in deep-shit trouble like Gingko.

Many a time, a hen cannot talk like a cock. (PS: Tim, Spare me hor, dun come in and “kar jiao’). How I wish to..so sad :(

In SHC, I have happy times and have my hits too. I wish to share and open. Again, how ah? Wait till my next life is a cock – Rover is my name.

  10. Wei Gwen, SHC started only 2005 mah.. so how can u b a member since 2004 or Terence got his calendar wrong again har? hehehehe…

Wat I can remembered was dat I was browing under singnet website cos at dat times, bo liao.. no sheng li, times were real bad n day in day out, chatg wif frens in MSN till it had became a chore cos no new issue lor.. Dat was where I came across Terence put a adv in Singnet talkg abt mtg ppls abv age 45 n honestly, at dat time, I was actually thinkg dat Terence is running some dating or match making bureau lor. But den, since I ntd, decided 2 resp 2 his adv lor n I can remembered his 1st group mtg (or rather mine) was at Midpoint Orchard, 1 small corner of KopiTiam leh with oli a handful of ppls attending lor but definitely Y2005 lor..

Since all of us have our own unique way n different mindset, we cant expect total acceptance by each n everyone. So as long as I am happy, I really dont bother to think about those that I cant get along with. This is too tiring n wasting much of our good times.

But, m glad 2 say dat I did get 2 know lots of frens here and couples of ‘sey tong’ here, I am sure they know who I am referring to whom can tolerate my temperament n ‘xiao hong’ lor. Mai put names here just in case, unintentionally left out, kena cheo lor.. hehehehe…

So to all buddies/frens.. stay as what we r n b open in sharing den there shd b no problem at all lor… Cheers… Dolly

  11. Dear SHCians,

It was a breezy evening by the Esplanade in Oct 2006. Suzhang, Norlinda, June Lim, Ann To and me was chit chatting over a cup of coffee after our CSC walk. We lamented over why despite eating less and exercise more, we are still putting on weight, one of us was particularly concerned about what kind of regular exercise deemed suitable for our age. It was as if something tickled Suzhang that she mentioned “SHC”. What “SHC”? SliverHairsClub lah, got so many activities for our age wan. Why Sliver Hairs and not Golden Hairs, ha…ha…ha….said JuneL. Suzhang continued….got walking, cycling, dancing, Karaoke, pot lucking……..

Dear Buddies, I am very thankful to Suzhang for making “SHC” known to me and that I am now a SHCian. My first event with SHC was cycling in Feb 2007, and second was the SHC D&D at SGCC in Mar 2007. Till now I have no regret joining SHC, as I have met many friends and some became my buddies. My lifestyle has changed since then, never before I reached home past midnight. My son commented that I am very hippeee hip this day, doing things that surprises him most of the time, like going dancing at Zouk, Roller Blading at EC, Cycling at Pengarang…..he he.hee… don’t tell your PaPa what I am doing. Well, having said so much, good or bad, I put it a side, most importantly I am enjoying SHC activities, especially cycling and the company of SHCians. Cheers to our Terence, founder of SHC!

    Ah Nee

  12. Dear Gwenyth @ #6

You said : “I join SHC in March 2004. My first event was the meeting, which we have monthly now, at the cafe in Raffles Place, it was in April 2004, sorry forgotten the date.”…..

The SilverHairsClub was conceived in Sept 2004. How is it possible for you to have attended it’s 1st meeting in March or April leh?? Although I did not attend any SHC monthly meeting until very much later, I know the 1st meeting wasn’t held at Pret-a-Port, the little café next to MPH at Robinson Road.

  13. Having read Ah Nee @ #11 brought back memories. I agreed with her whole-heartedly that we have Suzhang to thank for, for bringing the SHC to us. Ah Nee & Nor were fast workers, June was enthusiastic in her own way; but I being the lazy and passive person, lagged behind.

Whatever, I made many new friends here and enjoyed the events held. SHC managed to dab the 8th colour onto my rainbow.

  14. Look at SHC’s on-going activities and few will miss the name Dan Huang as their organiser. Thank you Dan for bringing us the memories of great enjoyment in the participation, and your relentless effort to give us more.

  15. Hi Tim,

Thanks for the kind words. Actually the heading should not read ‘What SHC means to me’ but ‘How I have benefited since joining SHC’.

Most any one can be an organizer, just that the fear of commitment put them off. We are all waiting for you to do something like soccer betting or horse-riding! How’s dat?

    Danz

  16. Dan-H, your audacious spirit to succeed and your adaptability to change so as to suit the mass have not gone unnoticed. You have given a lot of life and vibrance to SHC (imagine how boring it is if no danz, no badminton, no bowling, no Msian drive-ups, no photographer……………..no Dan-H).
We’re only too glad to hv folks like you, hehe, which means our expectations will continue to increase.

Legalised Gaming should only be foloowed, if at all, as a past-time. It’s never a quick fix to achieving wealth and certainly, an indulgence that ruins family. Hence, I’ll not actively promote it here other than the occasional commentary in jest.

  17. Tim, did you eat something wrong, your heart is sweeter as the days goes by! i almost cannot recognized you. Glad to have a supporter like you!

Gone are your days of mischief and tongue-in-cheek comments. Sound like the prodigal son has returned! Thanks again, with you and all the men in SHC united, we can performed!

You are an incredible guy, I wish you blessed days ahead!

    Danz

  18. Hey! Gingko #13

Let me clarify my ambiguous statement – it’s nothing more than just your sharing of “too many unpleasant bickerings &
    nasty squabblings”

Paiseh, will send my future comments for editing before publishing.

    Cheers!
    Rene

  19. Dan-H, you made one fatal mistake @ #18 when you called tim
ah liu a “prodigal son” when indubitably he’s the redoubtable “prodigious san”. For the mistake, I’ll chop yr gun into tiny cubes as fillings for MadRonald’s buns, a favourite for unholy part-time nuns who are already making a run for the buns and ordering them by the tons and now that you hv lost yr gun, the gals wont find in you the fun and so with shaolin temple you’ll sign on as its next monk………………heeeee.

  20. Hi Gwen, thanks for sharing. You certainly goes back a long way with SHC. Have you taken to dancing lately?

Marylee (Perth), we met at the kelong with your hubby and children. Would be nice if one day some of us here can pay you a visit. Have you done and fishing over there?

KT, I like your brand of humor. A very knowledgeable guy, always willing to help fella SHCians to be successful in the art of running a flea mart!

Rene, always jovial and lively but carry a heavy load of responsibilities! We will stand by you, try to offload here. Rene, we know you here and now, Rover we may not!

Dolly, whenever I read your singlish I need to put on my thinking cap, squint my eyes, and even my hair gave way! Yew Kwong is learning to write like you.

Ah Nee, always willing to share with us the good things in life. At this point of time, have taken to cycling even to Penggerang and roller-blade, wow, I must catch up with you!

Gingko, glad to know that you are enjoying yourselves and taking life as it come. My nickname is ‘cordiceps’ and together we form a lethal combinations!

Lily, our dancing queen, why are you keeping a low profile? You did a wonderful job choreographing the latin cha cha dance performance for our last DnD. Even Danz, Yew Kwong and Boon Liang find it easy to pick up the dance routine from you!

Annto, you know how you want to enjoy life! Fancy you taking up the Waltz, Rhythm, Rock n Roll, Rumba and Bachata now. Like they say, never to young to learn!

    Danz

  21. What does Silverhairs Club mean to me?
It has become an integral part of my daily activities. When I first posted my profile, I was totally unprepared for the numerous responses from so many people. It filled me with such gladness and warmth that these people who didn’t know me apart from what I wrote in my profile could welcome me like that.
It has been a year now and despite some hiccups, I still log on at least once a day, unless I’m away, and read all(well, almost all) ;-)) the comments voraciously. I’ve made many friends from various walks of life, lost a few
:-( and got back a few :-) and will continue to increase my circle of lovely people.
I’m not good at ‘contributing’ anything special to the club, but I hope my participation in the activities will be viewed as some kind of contribution. ;-)
I have to thank a very special person, Terence, for allowing me to come out of my shell, as I used to be very much a ‘loner’, having spent all my time on my family and not having had much opportunity to cultivate any kind of friendship.
Thank you Terence and God Bless You!

  22. Hi Dan,

I was delighted when Suzhang and Catherine Ho visited me in Perth. Last Thursday I went fishing with Catherine and we caught 36 herrings and 2 gardies. We also drove 5 hours north of Perth to Geraldton and Kalbarri.

Looking forward to meeting you and other SHCians in Perth and I can organise belly dancing class at my place.

    Mary Lee (from Perth)

  23. Hi Annto, no, I am not pointing to the attendance. Just noticed that both of us are attending the same number of dance class, are you also into Retro dance?

Mary Chan,I did enjoyed the morning walk with you and a few other SHCians at 7.30 in the morning in Pasir Ris many moon ago. Still playing mah-jong?

Marylee(Perth), what did you do to the fishes caught, eat them or sell them. Belly dancing, interesting when did you started on it?

Cat Yeo, a blessed belated birthday! How are you enjoying your holiday over there? Always the cheerful and hilarious gal around!

    Danz

  24. Dan,
I would like to resume the walks but no kakis leh. If you are interested, try and get a few more. Then I will join. Haven’t been playing mahjong. Also no kakis who want to play small small. Afraid to play with ‘sharks’ like you, hee.
How’s your dancing coming along? I want to dance with you one day. When huh? ;-)

  25. Mary,

Can be a problem to resume the walks, I am in the west and you are in the east! From the thread on ‘interest’ I do get some response on member keen on small stakes mah-jong and bridge, will keep you posted.

Dancing, no problem I am still having ‘jungle’ training now. Wait for the next ‘Jam n Butter’ near your neighborhood! I shall be there!

    Danz

  26. Dan, I will wait for your small stake games, but no sharks please. Even with small stakes, one can lose BIG playing with sharks, hehe.
I’ll look forward to dancing with you. Hope you salsa.

  27. “Can be a problem…………..I am in the west and you are in the east…….” Haha, where’s the problem if “East” isnt China and “West” isnt the USA but all within the red dot? It isnt very far to walk from the east/west to the west/east and then walk back. The PIE has few cars at nite and makes easy walking.

  28. Mary, I don’t Salsa yet, neither do I Samba but I do wriggle my hip with Bachata and Rumba!

Small stakes yea, calling Dennis and John Howe, are you there?

    Danz

  29. Dan,
Only wiggle (not wriggle dearie) your hips? That I too can do, whether Bachata or Rhumba or Merenge for that matter, hehe. Perhaps Rock n Roll?
Aiyo, Dennis and John Howe are big stake players lah. They are sharks like you too! Well, I don’t mind a game or two if you can get them to play, haha.

  30. Hi Dan,

As the fishes are very fresh, I steamed and ate with belachan. Some were frozen and brought to Singapore by Catherine Ho.

I am joining a group of ladies for belly-dancing this month. I am also keen on Indian dance.

    Mary Lee (from Perth)

  31. Hi Mary Lee (from Perth),

So nice to know that we share the same hobbies. I like kelong fishing very much and had invested a few hundred $ on my fishing gear. I used to spend 1 -2 nights at the kelong just to wait for barracudas.

My belly-dancing class with be commencing next week and I intend to pursue further for this particular dance.

In fact, I have been to Perth a few times many years back and I think is time for me to return to Perth again to visit my friends there. I really hope to take this opportunity to meet you. You may contact me via email: leescv@singnet.com.sg

    Hope to see you soon!

    veronique

  32. Hi Veronique,

Wow, we share 2 passions – fishing and belly dancing. Barracudas – very yummy in porridge! I used to fish at the kelongs IN Msia and Indonesia Riao islands (300 kelongs there!). I never miss fishing whenever I return to Singapore – last April, I went with grandson to hotboys kelong and then to Kranji (hearty catch with threadfin & red emporer). Planning to go to fishing at Rompin when I return to Spore. So must keep in touch for more fishing and belly dancing.

Or you come to Perth and we go fishing – big fat herring, mackerel, salmon, yellow tail, tailor, gardies. Besides cutting the fish for sashimi, I also make keropok and thai fish cakes.

    Luv,
    Mary Lee (from Perth)

  33. Dear Mary Lee (Perth)

    Thanks for your prompt response.

I was at the Hotboys Kelong from 19-20 Apr 08 with our SHC friends. Not many fishes during this part of the year and I managed to hook one catfish only. I used fish at AhYu’s kelong somewhere near to the Hotboys. Fishes which I caught comprising yellow tail, pei tor, selar, tambuan, parang fish, garoupa, big cuttlefish and the biggest catch was a 16 kg barracuda (shy to mention too many times). I agree, barracudas are very yummy for Teochew porridge and I had tasted that at the kelong when AhYu, the owner of the kelong, caught one and he cooked it immediately. Wow! That was real yummy……… Rompin, is this place in W Malaysia?

With this kind of temptation (big fat herring, mackerel, salmon……….) I really can’t resist. I used to find Australia rather boring when stayed with friends in Renmark, South Australia, Melbourne and Perth many years back.

Is it possible for me to have your email address so that we could communicate thru emails as our topic may make others yawn.

Dan, sorry! we are using your thread for subject which is irrelevant to your post.

    Best Wishes,
    veronique

  36. Hi Dan!
I’d joined SHC since last yr & went to the D&D @ SGCC but was too caught wif work to join other activities except the “Sing along session” held @ CBC Carol.. EO.

Tks to Steven C organising the lunch @ Annas whereby I met Caroline, Joan( Perth)& others too. Learnt that U people were going to CBC for a swim the next day. That’s where I met Tim,Mary C,Charles & U again. Tks for the breakfast.
Sori,I used yr card to write Charles tel no. My apologies.

I’m glad that I proceed for a game @ Kallang CC.
Tks to Terence 4 SHC lest I wouldn’t be able to go for a holiday in Perth on my own to stay wif Mary Lee (Perth)
    31/5 – 7/6
I went to church on that very evening when I reached there.
On 1st June Sun, we left Perth with Mary’s family (ranging from 7 years old to 60 years old) at 6 a.m for Geraldton and Kalbarri. We stayed one night at Dongara, got a glimpse of some wildflowers at Kalbarri National Park. We went tracking, sighting seeing & fishing etc.
Highlights of the trip was guava picking, running with the olympic torch down the gorges, bought some lobsters from the Murchison River, visiting Singaporeans in Perth (tasting their home-cooked food) and harvesting chillies from her garden.
I do enjoyed my stay here thoroughly esp. Mary’s cooking! We went fishing in Mandurah & caught 36 herring and 2 gardies.
On 6th June, we took a train from Gateway to Esplanade and walk through London Court, then hopped onto a yellow cat to Harbour Town – I bought a lot of luxuries.

Was wondering if U got the rite cat? Did u mistaken me as cat yeo?
Tks to Terence for having SHC!
Mary is a very gd host & whoever wants a break do go over to Perth!

    Cat Ho

  37. Hi Catherine Ho,

Thanks for sharing with us. Look like you already settle in and enjoying the gathering with SHC members.

Your trip to Perth was eventful, and we are all so envious. Time for a long holiday and visit to such lovely part of Perth, and fruitful fishing!

The cat i was referring to is still holidaying in the States and it Cat Yeo!
