Good-bye Dust
I have a robot to vacuum my house. I’m not joking .. it is the irobot Roomba model 550. It vacuums my floors by itself and goes back to the dock to recharge when battery is exhausted.
When the irobot went on sale last year in Singapore it was costly. The features were quite basic and I did not think that it would work properly and expected frequent breakdowns.
When I saw a more advanced model for US$225 at Costco in the States, I could not resist getting one to try out. Tested it in my daughter place and found that it really works. It meticulously gathers up specks of dust from everywhere it can access. I have been using it for the last three months here, and there are no hiccups. Touch wood.
For those of you who interested – a more expensive model is available in Singapore – Roomba model 560 with similar features – costs about S$930. Or you can get it on the internet for a much lower price. Those interested may want to explore further. I add this here for the product details it provides. You may want to explore ebay and amazon.com or other sites that ship overseas.
Good wishes,
Ming Choo
Sorry, I believe I’ve got the wrong Ming Choo who belongs to the same golf club as Janet. I looked through your profile again and realise you couldn’t be the Ming Choo who plays golf. After all, she is still single and you’re happily married. Now you know what’s up huh. Cheers.
Chin Boon
You must excuse me. I am not quite sure what is going on. Do not know what WGCC is.
Aiyo yoo….Aiya yaa…..Chin Boon, you still prefer a robot huh ???? who says none of them won’t even hold hands with you, got lah…plenty of swee swee ladies waiting to danz with you mah. You going to start your danz class right, happy danzing…waltzing….rolling…twisting…ha..ha..ha….
Ah Nee
Aiya yaa, Ah Nee, what’s the point of having chubby cute cute wan and slim sweet sweet wan when none of them won’t even hold hands with me? This soft-at-the-touch robot can at least whisper sweet nothing on my ear for a price of only $18 converter, wat.
Lina, Who needs curves when it’s soft and warm and can massage huh? But I do away with this curveless robot if you’d care to volunteer. ;-)
Ming Choo, you’re a member of WGCC too? Janet Loo (never met her) of WGCC wants to form a flight with fellow SHC. I run out of skirt to join in.
Hi Ming Choo,
Agreed that you will need to use a converter for US uses 115VAC while it is 230VAC, important point to note is the Wattage rating on the converter else you may blow up the convertor. There should be a wattage rating on the Robot, could be about 500 watts for example, so Cat when you buy the convertor it should be more than 500 watts, maybe about 600 watts, the higher the better but of course it will cost more. Look out for the newer electronic converters that goes up as high as 1000 watts and are smaller and more efficient (more commonly found in US than here) as compared to the older bulkier ones that uses transformer and tends to overheat easily.
A question here, will this robot really vacuum every sq in in the room, under tables and chairs or will it avoid certain obstacles. What about the edges of the room will these areas be cleanly vacuum too? Lastly what kind of filter does it use, and will it be difficult to get the filters here. Thanks, Cheers,
As I have mentioned to Catherine, you can use this appliance here with a voltage convertor which costs about S$18 from Sim Lim.
Dear Ming Choo,
May I know how you managed to use the robotic vacuum cleaner that you bought from the United States here as we have different voltage system. Did you buy an adaptor or did you change the whole plug?
Like you I love shopping at Costco (they have such a wide range of goods) but I refrain from buying electrcal gadgets because of the voltage problem. Would love to know how you manage to get around this problem.
Lastly, welcome to the club!

Find me a robot which can out-talk and out-last Patrick Khoo…………….I dont set a budget for that.
Hi Jane Wong/others,
….better for u guys to find a lovable wife/gf …. if u get their hearts, they will sure do all those for u.. hahahaha…. goodluck.
Lovable wife/gf is not a “slave” to housework.
She have other better roles to fulfill.
Suzhang #2, If the robot can do ironing I am sure it will burn all your clothes too.
Steven #5, I think you might as well find a robot that reads bed-time stories as well!
Chin Boon #3, So you want a robot that is soft and warm to the touch and dances with you. But, with all the curves at the wrong places! haha.
Ming Choo.
Your robot sounds wonderful! Some questions though. Is it flat enough to get under the sofa and narrow enough to get into the corners of the room? By the way, what shape is it?
Do you know how long the battery can last before it has to be replaced? I know it’s rechargeable, but what is its life span?
It will be fantastic if the inventors can come up with one that will mop as well!
Cheers.
Hello friends,
I hardly expect this writeup of mine would set off a chain of high-hope fantasy. Naïve of me to think I am being helpful. However, it is only human to dream. If not the airplane would not have been invented … so dream on.
Naively,
mingchoo
Hi all,
even if there is such a robot, will be costly to own and maintain and it is ‘COLD’, better for u guys to find a lovable wife/gf …. if u get their hearts, they will sure do all those for u.. hahahaha…. goodluck
Aiyo yoo..Chin Boon, why you like that, you already met some of us…chubby cute cute wan, slim & sweet sweet wan, so many of us and you still want a Robot that can dance with you…apa macam ????
Steven, I doubt got this kind of robotic device lah, maybe in our next life…so better stop dreaming of robot and you can save your $3000 for another tour to the wonderland lor.
Ah Nee

Let me know if there is one, I am prepare to pay $3000 for this wonderful robotic device and on top of it you earn a 20% commission. Ai mai!
Hi Ming Choo:
Thanks for sharing this very useful info with us.
Its a wish list come true!
Hope to see you soon
Hello Ming Choo
This is the 1st time we correspond but your subject matter intriques me.
Now, is there a robot which can perform not only house cleaning, but also karaoke, dancing (must be soft at the touch, not stone cold) cheek-to-cheek, samba, jive, rock & roll, swimming, cycling, golfing, whisper sweet nothing on your ear, and oh yes, someone says massage your body too?
If so, let me know and tell me how much it costs? My budget is $1,000, and you get add. 10% commision. (I recall someone says on my profile that SHC is “here to please”, what)
Hi Ming Choo
Was fascinated by your robot. I need one too…. to do all my dusting & housework… including ironing…he.he.. Besides vacuuming, can it clean up the floor as well ?
Hey Lina, think Ah Nee & me need one robot to help us with the cleaning. You ‘ve already got a part-time maid, so why need a robot to just clean the table tops? I think you’ll need one to massage your body instead…he.he..
Have a great weekend !
Hi Ming Choo,
Sounds great having a robot to do all your vacuuming. But I woundn’t mind having one to do the table tops as well! Have a great day.
