Profile of a woman in the box
It took me months to write a little about myself on this site as I was having difficulties to log in to the post page, I thank the President and Founder of SHC Mr Terence Seah for creating this club and the website where every one of us could write about ourselves and comment on certain posts.
Well, I am a lady who is shy but was a successful business woman from the 1970s to 1990s, have seen lots of things in my life, not very active in outdoor space due to lack of time and commitment, had a little set back in my life but I believe it’s a plan by our creator for something better to happen may be.
Right now, I am a kindergarten teacher of 13 years after I became single again, a great career switch though but I feel great achievements when I see my weaker students became stronger and I have made a great difference in helping the families of my students to become stronger, too. I am still upgrading myself by taking up courses 3 times a week where there are exams and assignment, hope to come out from the kindergarten setting and set up my own tuition centre one day which is my dream.
I am a deep, no nonsense, introspective and analytical person, I can accept nothing to face situations & people, and I am fascinated by the mysterious and unknown. I enjoy periods of solitude in peaceful surroundings and need time to study and reflect. I love ocean, it has a powerful attraction to me but pity that I do not know how to swim.
The study of philosophy, psychology, scientific research, Meta physics or religion appeals to me and I am scientific in my approach to truth.
I have been to the monthly gathering once in May I think, I was overwhelmed by the large crowd, though I did not really know many of them yet except a few where we have exchanged our contact numbers. I met my long lost friend Mary Chan, it was nice to meet her, and I have met the founder Terence, too, he is a very nice man indeed.
Hi Nancy Major Tan!
I was surprise to see a new comment on my “profile” post, that was written Oct 2008. Thank you for dropping by. So – I read your profile…
What a fascinating person….wow….
actually – I have met you at the self-development talk at the intercontinental hotel basement vault… I remember you as a slim, neatly dressed, pretty lady. Too young looking to be qualified for the silverhair club.
And wow… your profile has generated so much interest!
Yes – we are rather similar, aren’t we?!
But – I suspect, you are a much much more clever and resilient person… from the way you wrote about your life experiences.
Hope to catch up with you soon.
Hi CharlesC @# 85
The limerick is meant for SHC members, not for the protagonist. Hope to use it as a closure for a sad episode.
Hi Nancy
The silver lining – it ‘inspired’ two poems. :)
Cheers,
Hi Charles Chua,
You are right, the boar will respond zero, any way, thanks for reponding Jasmines’s well versed poem.
Have a good week ahead!
Hi Jasmine,
Well done! That is a well versed poem! Wow! Keep up the good job!
Thanks so much for that post.
Here is another one:-
There came a Chauvinistic BORE,
He criticized, scrutinized & categorized respectful ladies, and many more,
He showed no respect of we ladies’ rights,
The respectful ladies no choice but use well verses to fight,
The Conceited Boar definitely has lost his pride,
That Miserable BORE has gone to hide.
A funny rhyming scheme, all rights reserved, too.
Thanks!
Hi Jassmine T,
That’s a good one but I fear your efforts and talent are wasted on the ‘Boars’ with ‘baser’ instincts.
Your reply will be ‘like water off a duck’s back’, just a shrug of his shoulders and it falls off.
But I should really not be responding here lest I get dragged into it.
What are the odds he will respond? Perhaps approaching zero?
Have a Good day ahead. Cheers
Hi Nancy
Here’s a poem dedicated to all in SHC, and especially to you and KarenT:
*Limerick
There was, on the prowl, a randy, Conceited Boar
Who enjoyed scrutinizing the female species, and more.
He told the gregarious hens in Hensville, “You are frustrated and desperate!”
He offered them his sympathetic ears as a healthy outlet.
They struck the Chauvinistic Boar with a cat-o’-nine-tails till he was sore.
(*limerick – a humorous poem of 5 lines with an aa-bb-a rhyming scheme. ** all rights reserved.)
Hi Jasmine,
Thanks so much for your post. Sorry for the late reply.
I certainly hope that I will meet you in person.
Yes, indeed, will also hope to meet up with the like-minded people to share and talk about poetry, what a wonderful thing we should do, huh!
Cheers!
Hi Daisy,
Its was so nice to meet you in the first cycling activity.
You take care,too.
Hi Celia,
Thanks for your post,too.
have a wonderful weekend.
Hi June,
I will be leaving town this weekend, and have to wrap up a few things this couple of days. Thanks so much and I will definitely look for you when I am back. Cheers.
Nancy
Do read what I had written on the Tan C B site.
U take care too n hope to see you again.
Hi Nancy
Don’t give up the forest because of a disappointing tree. Let’s meet with like-minded people and talk about poetry.
Hi June @# 7
I like your ‘aside’. So dramatic. Were you a drama student?
Regards to both,
Jassmine
Hi June,
Thanks for your posts,
I am very sorry that I won’t be able to meet up with you and Celia, I will be on course on that day.
But not to worry, I will definitely find time to meet up with both of you.
Cheers Ladies!
Dear Daisy,
Nice to see you here and I like you, too, you are a nice lady I have met, yes, indeed we have a good laugh over the “man in blue”. Not this small little thing will affect me, if you have read the issue on Tan C B, you will be very upset over that issue, too.
No worries, Daisy, you did not do anything to upset me either, I will be fine, I am just upset & wonder why people need to bring up certain sensitive issues that affects people’s lives.
Yes, they are nice people in SHC.
Thanks for your post Daisy.
Warmest Regards & take care.
OOps whn I was writing my comment, comment #75 wasn;t in yet.
My …u go girl ,,,,is for Major….:-))
Yes!!! I like your Attitude…u go girl!
Hey Major and Celia
wanna meet up this Frday at Oxford Hotel, Middle Road, 6 pm thereabt?
chatting is not so fun whn u don’t see a face..:-))
Nancy Dear
I have just got to know u n had hoped to see you more at SHC events but now u r saying u do not want to come back? It’s me who’s heartbroken!
I hope I had not done anything to upset up during our first encounter at the SHC’s cycling day. I like you and I do find you have a sense of humor too! We had not been happy with the man in blue’s comment but we had a good laugh at it.
If I may say u had liked Terence, Yew Kwong, Ah Nee, Susan, Maureen, Charles Chua and Ronald Wie, now that is more nice people than the one man in blue.
I too am not perfect but thru’ these years I’ve learned and realized many many things n I would like to share something with you. We cannot change what people are like or their way of thinking but we can do these for ourselves. Your sense of humor will help too!
Please do not give up on us yet!
Hi Celia & June,
No worries, I just need time to reflect & solitude, too much to think about.
I definitely will find time & ways to meet up with you, this iron lady here is very tough and I can accept nothing to face situation and people.Hahahaha……………
Warmest Regards!
huh…why like dat? what happened? tell me…did someone push your bike down that day?
come on Major, tell me
Dear Major,
I felt a tinge of sadness when I read your latest post. I was hoping to somehow able to meet up with you later if there is a chance somewhere in SHC. As with all the rest, I truly admire your posts, comments, talents.
Speaking for myself only, I always remind myself just these few words, “its all right” and “never mind”.
Warmest regards.
Hi June,
Thanks for your appreciation & compliments about my rhyme.
I wrote rhymes after I came back from the cycling activity last week, that was my 1st time to joy the SHC cycling activity & am sure it will be my last.
I felt good about SHC, the Founder, the Event Organisors and the members, I thought it is a good place for people to meet up, know one another, enjoy our silver years with people out of our families, learn from one another, appreciate each other’s company and respect one another for whom they are but my wishes are broken and I may not want to go back to the “FAMILY” any more as I felt very heartbroken.
I am grateful to the founder Mr Terence Seah and thankful to the EOs for their time & hard work in organising meaningful events for SHC members, I wish all SHC members will enjoy their silver years and the activities & events to the fullest.
I am sorry June that I won’t be able to teach you the rap as I am not coming.
Hi Jassmine,
Glad to know you, good to hear that you like to pen poetry, great! Do put up in the forum to share with the members & others, keep it up!!!

Hi Ah Nee, Susan, Daisy, Maureen, Terence, Charles Chua, Ronald Wie, Yew Kwong & many SHC members,
Nice meeting all of you.
Here is a small reflection on today’s adventure in the cycling activity, have not been cycling for the last 20 years.
Ronald Wie invited to come this weekend,
Cycling at East Coast Yew Kwong Planned,
Here I come for the cycling event,
Over here I met SHC friends.
While I cycled on the track,
There is no one behind my back,
Yew Kwong was my cycling guide,
Charles Chua was with him beside.
Terence treats us with chicken curry,
Our stomachs were growling, hungry,
There was a man he wore in blue,
“If you wanna eat, go get fork and spoon!”
It was quite a shock to me,
I was wonder who is he?
The chicken curry was quite tasty,
It will be nice to go with bread and roti,
Thanks again for the curry,
All of us went home happily! :D
Hi Vivian,
Thanks for your post, will love to meet you in person, too, am sorry for the late reply, have been very busy with work and studies.
Will sign up to learn how to swim if time permits but you have to promise me that I will not sink.
Hahahaha………..
Have a nice weekend.
Till then………
Take care!
Hi June,
Yes, you may be right, the tunnel may be dark and stuffy as well packed with runners and walkers, think I better not sign up for that event, thanks for your concern.
I am glad that you have become more chatter, I was like you before when I was very much younger, very shy to talk.
Till we meet then.
Enjoy your weekend!
Hooray!
Hi Grace,
Thank you so much for your welcome note and the compliments on the Poems Of Love.
Certainly, I will love to meet up with you some day to enjoy the interestings activities that enthusiastic & deligent members of SHC have planned for us, we may enjoy our silver years together and inspire each other so as to live our silver years to the fullest!
Enjoy your weekend.
Cheers!
Hi Nancy,
I am new too in this club, you ‘re really such a interesting person that I would like to meet. I do give coaching for swimming,if you like you may call me at 97777409 anytime.
Vivian lai
Hi June,
I just got back from errands. Haha not just ‘hak mang mang’ but one will need to have a very strong pair of elbows/hands/arms to jostle into and out of the tunnel. I think it will be overwhelming of easily into thousands of walkers and joggers. Hmmmm.. Really nice chattering with you and Major on line. Must really see each other in person.
Aye aye Major and Celia…nah the tunnel’s out for me…”hak mang mang”, can’t see sky, may be terrifying..:-))) Nah, that was just kidding. The truth is I am staying overnite in chalet 13/14 Sep with couple of girlfrens, so most likely chattering till wee morning….:-)) Funny ah, girls chatter so well…:-)))..chi chi cha cha chi chi cha cha…:-))
I must really get to see u both in person. I hardly “chatter” so much with new members…:-))) Guess it was the major that first attracted me…:-)))
C u soon…
Hi Nancy,
As I read your sharing on POEMS ON LOVE, I am very touched by the words. The bottom truth is so real and I certainly agree with you. Thanks for this beautiful piece.
May I take this opportunity to welcome you onboard the SHC SHIP; embrace with endless fun and laughter. I am sure you will find interesting activities and new friends to keep you company during your journey throughout the “silver years”… a warm handshake…and hope to meet you soon!
Regards,
Grace Kok
Hi Major,
Congrats to your earlier exam and all the best to your yesterday’s exam too. The Sunday gathering is at this coming Sunday morning about 10am onwards at Burger King, East coast Park. If you are going, maybe we can meet there at about 11.00 am, if you are not going, then maybe we can go another time. cheers.
Hi Celia,
Oh, I had one exam 2 weeks ago, got a distinction, yesterday’s exam was very tough, dont know what I will get. :(

What time will you be going?
Hi Major and June,

Hi Dear all,

Why? You laughed, what’s wrong with my grandpa’s name? Does it sound funny?

The tunnel looks interesting too.
If there’s a major, there must be a minor……..one nearing puberty. So if there’s a Major Tan, there must also be a minor charles……..a little boy looking up at the world of the grown-ups, wondering, asking questions and seeking the crystal clear truth.
Thanks Nancy, it is now crystal clear how it all started. I won’t ask to see the photo of your great grandpa, Hock Major Tan. ha ha ha.
Celia Wong, capital c or big C is still the same name, as long as it is not spelt upside down.
Look forward to meeting both of you soon. Have a good day ahead.
Hi Charles,
I am sorry that my fat fingers had hurriedly spelled your name with small cap ‘c’. Sorry about that. Warmest regards.
Hi Major and charles,
Thanks for the post. Ooops, I forget at #38 to also mention to hope to meet up with Danz Huang and Caroline Gee and the rest. cheers.
Hi Charles,
Nice to meet you here, that’s very normal, many people have asked the same question, not ‘kaypoh’ lah.
Well, My great grandpa was named Hock Major Tan and he was a major, my dad loves him too much, I was the first great-grand child, so,my name was named Nancy Major Tan, my sir name is Tan but Nancy Major wasn’t registered in my NRIC,that’s how it comes from, you can address me as Nancy, it doesn’t matter, there is the 2nd part of the story about my name, I would only let the person know when I know him well, hee………….Hope I have answered your questions.
Thanks for your post and your curiosity, am sure many members would like to know, too.
Warmest Regards!
Have a good week ahead!
Hi Nancy,
Just curious about your name Major Tan. Pardon me for my ignorance. Is ‘Major’ a rank or part of your name and is ‘Tan’ a surname.
How did ‘Major’ became part of your name? from your parents’ name . and how do you name your children.? Sorry, so many questions! just kaypoh lah!
Hi Major,
Just a short break to see my dear friends that’s all.
Thanks so much and hope to meet up with you, June, Yew Kwong, Terrence, Mary Chan, Ron Lai and nice fellow SHC members soon. cheers.
Hi Celia,
Wow!You are going to Frankfurt and Munich, for tours or vacation? You make me jealous.
Well, wish you have a wonderful flight and safe journey, will see you soonest.
Jog regularly to keep up the stamina and enjoy while you can!
Cheers!
Hi June, thanks for liking my name, you will address me as Major then,I grant you the permission, hahahaha………
By the way when is the closing date for registration for GE 10km run on 26th Oct.?
Did you read Yew Kwong’s latest post about Tunnel Run?
Regards!
Major
Hi Major and June,
I will be signing up for the New Balance run in October so I will give it a miss for the GE 10 km run. On a side note, I will be going to Frankfurt and Munich end of Aug for 3 weeks visiting 2 very close friends of mine and we were together since our secondary school days. I will be doing lots of walks and jogging in the parks esp. in Frankfurt, as I will be staying for more than 2 weeks than in Munich. So, I hope to jog as much as I can.
In case I give a wrong impression of myself, I am just a regular jogger.
Hope to meet up with you guys soon. cheers
Hi Major…(I love this name) and Celia…are u interested in the GE 10 km run…26 Oct? 27 Oct is Deepavali. I may sign up. If I sign up, I will be walking (not running) the 10 km. Want to join me and my friends (non SHC) walk?
Hi Yew Kwong and Nancy,
Wow, did not know so much about fruits with numbers. Thanks and will pay more attention. Thanks Yew Kwong for the other interesting run.
cheers
Hi Gals
There is another run, 1st of its kind here, which may interest U. More info here – http://www.swingkpe.com.sg/
Hi June & Celia,
At least you took part in those runs, I really admire both of you, I don’t even have time, opportunity & guts to do it.
Keep it up!
There is some issues on fruit labels, the fruits that we purchase daily in the market, may be I should share with all of you here or may be some of you have known about it.
Here it goes:-
Subject: Did You Know About Fruit Labels?
Read the Numbers on Your Fruit ,I just found this out about a month ago and I’ve been quite an organic consumer for over about a year not totally but on and off. I learned that sticker labels on the fruits actually tell you how
the fruits have been grown ? whether they were organically grown or conventionally grown with pesticides and herbicides; oh, and let’s not forget about the genetically engineered fruits. Conventional Fruit Labels Four digits and does not start with 9 ** mostly starting with the digit 4 Organic Fruit Labels Five digits and starts with number 9 Genetically Modified Fruits Start with the digit 8 So next time you go shopping, remember these critical numbers and know how to avoid purchasing inorganic and GMO fruits.
ShopSafe :) This is good to know because stores aren’t obligated to tell you if a fruit has been genetically modified (grrr?shy;.) Okay, so if you come across an apple in the store and it’s label is 4922, it’s an conventional apple grown with herbicides and harmful fertilizers. If it has a sticker 99222, it’s organic and safe to eat. If it says 89222, then RUN!!!! It has been genetically modified (GMO).
Happy reading!
Hi Yew Kwong,
Once again thanks very much for the info. Yipeee.
cheers
Hi Celia & Nancy
Can always get the latest updates from here :
http://www.sgrunners.com/blog/upcoming-local-races/
Hi June and Major,
Hi June, hahaha, yes thats what I also do when and if there are cameras zooming at me, hahaha.
Hi Major,
So nice to be able to chit chat with you guys at this website. Kudos to Terrence for all he is doing.
cheers
Its a luxury to have a day off being a school holiday today, so that I am able to chat with the SCH members, I have never had this experience before, great!
Actually I am preparing for my examination tomorrow, it seems having mental block, whatever I have gone through with my lessons this morning, it simply does not go into my brain, can anyone teach me what to do?
But I think it really doesn’t matter that I have grand visions of doing all kinds of amazing things today, the drudgery of work calls and I think I must answer. I may be tempted to try a courageous escape, but it’s not a good idea. I must just bite the bullet and do what’s expected of me, I think so,otherwise it will be a waste of effort that I have put in, hee……….. Leave the great adventure for another day, may be.
Well, am off to revise my study again.
Until then.
Cheers!
Hi Major and Celia…there’s the GE run too in Oct…link attached..
http://www.women10k.com/
I can’t run.
So whn I sign up for such runs, I walk instead..:-))
The last SHAPE run, yours truly walked the 10 km…but whn see cameras, I jog a bit…:-)))
Hi Yew Kwong,
Thanks for the information about New Balance Real Run 2008.
Your response was fast, great!
Warmest Regards!
Hi Nancy and Yew Kwong,
Thanks so much Yew Kwong for the info. Yes, that was the one I was thinking of taking part. I had run at the Singapore Johor Run 2006 marathon for 10 km and since then, I am keen to try to join such marathon from then onwards. Thanks so much again.
Hope to see you guys soon, cheers.

Hi June,
Well, my colleagues address me as Major, my students’ parents call me Mdm Tan, friends call me Nancy, you may choose the one that you feel comfortable with, I am fine with either one, thanks.
Nice to meet you here.
Hi Major!..can I call u that or u prefer Nancy?
Hi Celia,
Nice to meet you here, hope to meet up with you one day. Cheers!
October New balance sports run? I have not heard about it, don’t know whether I am fit to go for that, would love to if my stamina allows, hahaha……… where can I get more information about this run? I was a cross country runner when I was young. :D
I would like to join if my schedule permits and of course my stamina allows.
Have a good week ahead!
Warmest Regards!
Hi Nancy,
I am a newbie myself and looking forward to seeing you and the rest of the SHC members soon.
Am wondering, are there anyone out there going for the October New balance sports run, the X-trail run at Changi Exhibition point. I am interested in taking part in the veteran race for 15 km. Is there anyone out there keen to join too. If, then we can practice together.
cheers
Hi Mary,
Oh, you will be flying tomorrow, I wish you have a pleasant flight and a safe journey.
Enjoy yourself Mary, take lots of pictures.
Until then, see you when you are back.
Cheers!
Hi Ronald,
Thank you so much for your welcome note, and your encouragement, too as well, which is very important to people like me,:D, you are such a kind soul, it makes me feel at home, too.
Thanks for your compliments, too.:D
Glad that you have the same interest as me, we can always share our thoughts to help more people around us if we can just like what you are doing in the past, now and future, too.
Oh, you have interest in the teaching profession as well, that’s great! We can always have discussion and share ideas on this topic when we have a chance or time permits.
So, until then, see you!
Have a wonderful week ahead!
Nancy,
I haven’t started yet. I will be flying off tomorrow.
Thank you for your wellwishes. You take care too and I will try and log on whenever I can find a pc.
Cheers
Hi Nancy,
Hope that you will overcome your shyness and will join the cycling this Sat. I admire your strength, courage and determination to dream even single handedly and your no nonsense scientific approach to understand the unknown too.
On your feedback that it took months to be able to post, I hope Terence maybe find a solution of accepting email registration else many other new members may have just given up, so cheers to your determination again to join SHC.
On the other comment that in your first meeting you did have a chance to really get to know anyone, except Mary, I hope our members that note of this and not be too occuppied with themselves only at such meetings.
So Steven and those in the teaching profession get to know this iron lady and listen to her dream and maybe we can all help her achieve it in some way. I am some interest in the teaching arena, maybe in programmng or gaming or something so will like to share in this friendly discussion.
So welcome once again Nancy, and dont worry if you cycle a little slow, I will helping Dor to get her first step on the bike for her maiden ride out of the fear of falling.
Christina Chan,if you can already cycle I am sure you can keep pace with Nancy, or do you finally need my help??
Cheers
Hi Tim,
Goog morning!
Thanks so much for your post, and your well wishes, too.
Have a wonderful week ahead!
Nancy, you hv committed 1 grave mistake. While Terence SKS or Senior Kommander Sengh is SHC founder, he is neither a President nor a Prime Minister.
I note that you hv had 1 set back. Lucky you. Many of us have set backs after set backs. In my case I have my back to a sack, and will be packed in there to be dumped into the deep blue ocean which you love and it makes a powerful sttraction to see a gunny sack popping in the waters with 2 hands stretched out paddling. fact that you cant swin means that i wont be disturbed.
Wish you well in your endeavour to eventually found and establish your tuition centre.
Mary,
Oh, you are not in Singapore, guess you are touring Europe, right?
Well, have a wonderful & a pleasant vacation & a safe journey home,too.
Will see you soon.
Regards!
Nancy,
No problemo. You are one of the few who write very well. What’s a few typos? :-)
Look forward to seeing you again when I return on the 13th of Sept.
Take care.
Sorry, Mary, your name was spelled in lower case, I apologize for the careless mistake. :D
Hi mary,
Yes, finally I got here, yes, no more long lost friend, hee………….
Thank you so much for your encouragement.
Warmest Regards!
Hey Nancy.
You finally made it! Good on you! How nice to be mentioned in your profile. :-) Yes, my long lost friend no more.
Have fun here and make a lot of new friends.
You have a lot of potentials. Have faith in yourself and dare to do, Nancy. You deserve happiness.
Cheers!
Hi Florence,
Glad to meet you here, Would love to and hope we will meet one day in person of course.
Have a wonderful weekend,too.
Cheers!
Hi Joy & Ming Choo,
Joy, glad that I have someone who has a little in me, there was a business man labeled me as a legendary woman,I do not know what it means, colleague & Suzhang said that I am woman with substance, hee………..thks for that, I hope I am.
Ming Choo,I was like you, before I went to the May meeting, I was hesitated whether to go for that meeting as I am reticent about meeting many new people or to be in a big crowd where no one knows me, I am still thinking whether to come again for the next one, any way, I have signed up for some, hope to see you there one day, do make a start,Ming Choo.
Hallo Nancy,
I’m a newbie too, been to a meeting only once and met some nice people. Like Joy Chuang, I also see a little bit of me in you. I’m very slow in warming up to people, esp in a crowd.
I also had dreams of starting up a kindergarten (creche) but that was a long, lomg time ago. I used to volunteer at the centres though.
Would love to meet up with you in the near future. Right now I’m out of circulation due to some personal committments.
Cheers. Have a good weekend,
Florence
Dear Nancy,
Welcome to the club. I am a newer newbie than yourself, as I have not been to any meetings. Not sure when to do so, as I am rather reticent about meeting many new people at the same time. I guess I have to start somewhere. In the meantime, I am reading the posts and doing some correspondence to understand the culture of the club better.
Good wishes to you,
Ming choo
Hi Nancy
You have an interesting name and profile. I see a little of me in you. Hope to meet you one day.
Joy
Hi Suzhang,
Thanks for your compliments, well, we can always learn from one another, would be glad to meet you, too.
