Amy Soon – Profile

Hi,emoticon

I am Amy and have been a registered member since 2006 but have never had the opportunity

to participate in any of your activities. I was the lone care-giver of my husband who only recently

 passed away.

I am more of an outdoor person. I cycle, swim and fish ( at the bedok jetty ). I play badminton, table-

tennis, gateball and pickle ball. Hope to be able to join some of you in these activities (before my joints

give way).emoticon

  1. Hi Amy,

Welcome to SilverHairsClub. There are activities within this club and outside that will keep use ageing gracefully, healthily and meaningfully.

    Cheers………Edwin

  2. Hi Amy,

Welcome to SHC. There are so many kinds of activities, of outdoors, indoors, games, get togethers here, do find some time and check it out and you can make many friends here. Cheers.

  3. Hello Edwin & Celia,
Yes, I am sure there are some activities that are of interest to me. Problem lies in taking the first step. I also realise that most of the activities are in the later part of the day or on weekends – these are times when I have company at home. Besides, I am not very comfortable going out alone at night.
Well, so much said, it still remains for me to work out my “fears”. Hope to join in soon and get to know some of my “neighbours” to go with me,huh?

  4. Hi Amy,

I like fishing too. How is the catch at Bedok Jetty? Do you get a lot of tamban – very good to make keropok. Thinking of bringing my grandson there to fish when I am in Singapore.

    Mary Lee (from Perth)

  5. Hi Amy
    Welcome to the club.

Sorry to hear about your husband.

Glad that you have pulled yourself together and is willing to come out to make friends and do healthy activities together.

SHC is where I found good friends, doing meaningful and enjoyable things together. I hope you will find time to join in the activities and enjoy the fun and friendship too.

    Have a great week.

    Warmest Regards
    Caroline Gee

  6. Hi Mary,
I am glad to know that there is someone out there who loves fishing (small fishes). I am usually one of the few ‘lady’ anglers at the jetty. Haven’t been fishing for some time now.
Yes, I used to come home with a big plastic bag of small fishes (mainly tambans, some kunnings, selars and finger-size ikan bilis). Occasionally, I do get bigger fishes esp when I use bigger hooks and fresh prawns as bait. But I honestly prefer too jiggle the tamban hooks (gives me some thing to do while I reflect…)
The old men at the jetty are very helpful. Ever ready to help you bring in your catch (esp when it is a big one – can’t bear to see the bodoh let it get away, haha.)
Maybe we can fish together. I live nearby and usually cycle there in the morning. Don’t be too hopeful though – some days there just don’t seem to be fishes.

  7. Hi Caroline,
My husband suffered from bronchiectasis and had to be hooked on to an oxgyen concentrator (24h). He was at his end stage of the disease so it was actually quite a blessing for him to go. His lungs were failing him and he was practically gasping for air.
We were all mentally prepared for his passing on.
Now that most things are settled, I guess it’s time for me to move on.
Yes, I am trying to get back my life.
So glad that you are understanding.
    Thanks.

  8. Hi Amy!

I am sorry for your loss. My condolences. It must have been a daunting task being the lone care-giver. It is good that you intend to come out and interact with others. Do make time to attend one or two gatherings, to meet all the wonderful ppl in SHC. One baby step at a time. Someone once said that “the greatest fear of all, is fear itself.”

  9. Hi Amy,

Wow, finger-size ikan bilis makes very good fritters.

Yeah, we go fishing together in March when I come to Singapore. Maybe we drive to Rompin and take the boat out for a day. If you have time to come to Perth, then we go for herring, squids and crabbing, ok?

Meanwhile take good care of yourself,

    Mary Lee (Perth)

  10. Hi Amy

I understand the pain and suffering you have gone through as I too was the lone care-giver to my husband until he passed on from pancreatic cancer. That was more than 5 years ago.

Its most painful watching a love one suffer and there is little else we can do to alleviate the pain. I agree that in this kind of situation, its better for them to go. Sometimes it hurts really bad but we have to learn to accept it and move on.

The heart ache will never heal but it has somewhat lessened over the years with all the love and support from family and friends I made in SHC.

I hope to meet you someday and we can chat about nice things over a cup of coffee. I used to go fishing by the jetty at Bedok but I have hung up my fishing rods for the bicycle and karaoke mics.

I also hope that you can find the friendship and happiness I found in SHC.

You may wish to write to me at Caroline.Gee23@gmail.com

    Take care

    Warmest Regards
    Caroline Gee

  11. Hello Jacueline,
Yes, I’d try my best to attend SHC gatherings.I’m glad to know that everyone is so helpful. I am a real hopeless case. I have no road sense (having always depended on others to take me places or do the navigating)and is not too good at taking public transport. Only recently have I started venturing out on my own (ie taking the MRT and buses).I am only good for familiar places (having been ‘taught’ how to get there). A bit of a ‘swaku’ really.
For the last 2 years or so, my husband spent more time in hospital than at home. I got quite used to being alone and doing things alone.

  12. Aiyo Mary, I am not such a great ‘fisherman’ – the only time I went out to the sea to fish was with my husband and colleagues. We spent most of the day jumping in and out of the water instead of fishing (much to the annoyance of the ‘pros’). Even that was a long time ago and I am not too sure if I can fish from a boat now because I do have motion sickness.
Yeah, I will go jetty fishing with you if you like.
Like to get to know you better. You take care too. God Bless.

  13. Very chiak luck, Amy, I also got motion sickness.

Me, like Caroline Gee, love to cook but I cannot sing as well as her. Besides fishing, I love gardening, pets, reading, walking & crafts.

Would you join us for holidays either from Perth or from Singapore? Jetstar fares are quite affordable. I paid less $400 return fare for Perth-SIn-Perth.

God bless you too & have a good day.

  14. Thanks for the invitation to be your travel mate. I have travelled quite a bit but usually on tour packages. Have hardly gone the free and easy way. It would be great to try something different. I have a good friend (God-sister), Lynn, who is my constant travel companion. She is presently on a 2 year work contract. I work my travel plans around her leave so that we can be room mates (that way, we cut cost while we have companionship amidst strangers).
We do have plans to visit Perth (free and easy) some time.
Have been there before while visiting Melbourne,Canberra,Sydney and again when in Tasmania.
Let us get together(when you are here)and size each other up, huh?
I had a beautiful tri-colour Australian beagle which I doted on. I delayed downgrading to a small flat because I didn’t want to give him up (he’s too large and active for a 3rm flat).
When he finally died (of old age and heart disease), I sold my house and moved here.I still miss my pets (had a Silky terrier b4 the beagle) and yes, and potting around in the garden. The double storey house was just too big for the two of us and I don’t intend to be a slave to my house nor pay for someone to clean the place.
I will e-mail you and hope to hear more about you.

  15. Weiwei Amy, welcome welcome :)
Alamak, the cycling activity will not be on next mth and probably will not be on Jan’09 due to CNY lor..

Believed me la, going holi wif group of SHCians here is very fun 1 as I hv been going holi with some of them, be a 1day short trip or 6days trip. A little of agrument here and there, but that make these trips interesting rite?

Not oli Jetstar got offer now, Airasia and Tigers oso on offer lor. Hmm, thinking of holi again.. Cheers.. Dolly

  16. Hi Amy & her Well Wishers,

It is great to read delicate subjects raised and the bonding of new found friends amongst total strangers initially.

Amidst the “hee haa happenings”, we need to continue to nurture the unseen portion of ourselves (some call the spirit, emotion, pyschology and mental). Check out this http://www.tsaofoundation.org and look at the training module of Guided Autobiography (GAB). With 15 SHCians, you can request for one started. I know I benefitted from it when I attended one 5 months back.

    …………..Edwin

  17. Hi Amy, Welcome, welcome. It’s good to know another Easterner in SHC. Tho’ not a very active member myself but selectively joined in whatever activities my schedule permits me as I’ve still got to work for my bacon (unfortunately). Nevertheless, it’s good to keep active these days regardless of age and over your recent loss, time will be the best healer and I’m sure our Karaoke queen, Caroline will agree with me, right Caroline? Nevertheless, you’ve come to the right club and I hope to meet up with you one day too, for fishing at the Bedok Pier or maybe join a few of you to visit Marylee in Perth. Take care & regards, Lisa.

  18. Edwin #17 (and Sorry Amy to use your space here on this matter),

I had a quick browse on the Tsao Foundation website. The training module of Guided Autobiography (GAB) looks interesting. It can be of interest to “Young” SHCians for down the road “prepareness”.

As a matter of interest, any “Young” SHCians out there who may be keen to attend this “training module”. Can we have a show of hands, I will need at least 20 committed hands before I start knocking on Tsao Foundation’s door about this matter….

  19. As a follow up to #20

Oh ya! Before I forget. Please have the courtesy to check out Tsao Foundation website and at least read through the section on Guided Autobiography (GAB) before putting up your hands …. this is to avoid scenario like Caroline Gee wants to teach me in Hainanese those #%@*&%$#@??? kind of words for backing out in the last few days ….. Thanks!

  20. Hi Amy

First my condolences on the loss of your dear one but like you said it is a blessing tha he need not go through anymore suferring. Am glad that you are taking things positively and are ready to come out and enjoy the outdoors again…soooo Welcome to SHC.

I am a newbie here too and had went on a trip to Vietnam with Dolly and 10 other “lian huays” and I had not even met them before the trip….. but I never looked back since cuz we had sooooo much fun…. there were lots of singing and laughing and not forgetting shopping all the way and most of all we had all became good friends after the trip.

I do like to fish too but only with hand reels (can’t cast a line to save my life hahahah) …..maybe one day the 4 of us, Marylee, Caroline, you and me can get together too and see what our hooks and sinkers would bring up from the deep blue see ya ;0)….and if the fish don’t bite we can play majhong while we wait LOL

Too bad I would not be able to attend the member’s gathering on 17th Dec as I have a line dance class to teach but I am sure there will be other chances for us to meet soon.

    Take Care
    Scokie

  21. Hi Sock Cheng,
Thanks. Yes, I look forward to fishing with you & co but I can’t play mahjong. How about a game of Scrabble or Up-Words instead?
Oh, you are a line-dance instructor. Sorry, that’s not my cup of tea either. Haven’t got a sense of rhythm at all.

  22. Yes Sock Cheng.

Hope that when Mary is here, we can have a fshing trip, whether by the jetty or long kang. we can pack a picnic basket too.

Hahaha Sock Cheng, enjoy until “mm jai kee toh lok”

    Have a great day :)

    Warmest Regards
    Caroline

  23. #21 from Ivan. If there is enough interest in GAB, we will start a separate thread on this topic. That is where the list can build up to a maximum of 14.

#26 Amy, not to worry. You are trustingly bold enough to reveal a little about yourself in good company. You see the rally, especially amongst the ladies.

    Cheers……………….Edwin

  24. Yeah Caroline, we pack picnic basket & cycle to remote beach at Pulau Ubin, at low tide we pick gong-gong and lah-lah, at high tide we drop nets to catch crabs, then fry our catch with home-made belachan for dinner..On?

    Love & kisses
    Mary Lee (Perth)
