For the love of fishing at a kelong

Some of us like fishing from the Bedok jetty.  Others like pond fishing.  Brave ones go out and catch the big marlins.  Not so brave ones put their feet into a tub and enjoy rainbow fishes ravishing at their old skin.

We had a kelong outing, a few years ago.  SB Khoo caught a plate-size grouper.  Cannot remember, but RonaldLai caught a really tiny one.  Others just love the mahjong table.  I enjoy sleeping at the edge of the kelong, counting the stars after a couple of beers.

We are not going kelong fishing in this post.  But, if you have gone fishing in the last 12 months, share with us your experience, where you went to, what you got, what you ate, and how much did you spend.

Maybe, something might surface from your experience.  You never know.  Dont be shy.

  1. Hi DanielK,

I sense Ronald Wie holds you very well with good regards, and your being able to settle down in Johore Bahru. And, very nice to hear from you, from time to time.

Yes, I had a look at the two websites. We keep this kelong post running, and hear what our other kelong enthusiasts have to say. Please continue to share with us from time to time, how you are settling in JB.

  2. I never go kelong..& always wonder it must be satisfying waiting for those
    fishes to eat your bait?

I only know how to fish at Geylang market…hehe..oopss!..sori
but i love waiting for the fresh fish tangkap by my brother..& then
penggang it …wah!…that was so shiok sedap…hhhmmm..

  3. Hi Nor,
You should try kelong – very relaxing to watch sunset & sunrise. Where did your brother get those fresh fish?

    Hi Terence,
There is a fishing pond next to Sungei Buloh entrance – I fished there in April and got some baramundi and mulloway. Another good spot is the dams at Pulau Ubin – try to fish the outgoing neap tide for baramundi.

Bring your fishing kakis to Perth. Last week we caught some good size salmon, blue herring, skippy and bream at Mandurah – no need to go market for a couple of weeks.

  4. Marylee..one fine day when i visit your Perth home,u wanna take me go fishing?
You seem to know all the fishes names!

alamak…when i was a kid..i like to follow my brother go fishing…only at Changi beach..,just throw the rod to sea from the shore (so pathetic rite?)
& caught only small species ..unlike your baramundi & mulloway..whats that?…

  5. Marylee, with your good catch last week, will I get to eat some of the fish when I visit?
Please let me try to catch my own dinner too. Don’t wish to catch salmon because I find them too fishy and ‘orangey’.
Lynn loves salmon sushi but I watch and whince each time she puts one into her mouth (minus wasabi)- something I’d resort to to help me swallow anything so raw (ie if I have no other choices).

  6. Hi Nor,
Sure you datang sini & I bring you tangkap ikan. Baramundi is sea bass, sayang. Mulloway is not common in Spore but you can get some biggies from offshore Pengarang.

    Hi Amy,
Looking forward to meeting you at Perth airport very soon. Sure, you will catch your own dinner. The salmon here is not the ‘orange’ tasmanian salmon. No worries, you dont have to swallow raw food, I will fry or steam the fish for you, then freeze remaining fish & you can bring back to Spore. If we get more than 30 yellowtails or scalies, I can make keropok or salted fish for you.

  7. Hi guys!

Barramundi is also Seabass or Kim Bak Lor in our local terms; although much of what we eat is usually farmed… not too good a taste for discerning fish-eaters.

Yes, what we do with the fish we catch is more important to me… I’m not a sports fisherman and hate to see giant fish being hauled in just to get into some record book. A few good fish of eating size from real natural elements is the best! I envy those in Aussie, NZ and the US/Canada where fishing for “great food and company” is available easily.

For us in Singapore, we have to go to fishing ponds or charter an expensive boat trip to the surrounding areas. For fishing buffs this may not be a problem: but I’m no fisherman. For me, a fresh milkfish (bangus in Philippino, bandeng in Indonesian)or two on the coals smoking in my BBQ and eaten with kicap manis and cut red chillies is heaven.

For the diehards, you can explore serious fishing in Thailand from the Andaman right up north to the Chiang Mai/Mekong border… hundreds of fishing sites where only time and tenacity will reward you with fantastic catches. http://www.megafishingthailand.com

    Marylee… I envy you!

  8. Hello Daniel#1

I have never been to fishing before and am looking forward to try it someday. I went to the website u mentioned #1 but cannot see its photos and I have passed this query to a frequent Malaysia traveler from sg who also fishes, hope he has some inputs.

I was also told there are so many kelongs along the Strait of Malacca, some of its owners
are Singaporean and that I can try to check it up with this gentlemen, Mr. Daniel Ho, not sure the nbr is still valid incase u are interested to check it out

    cheers
    freda

  9. Hi Mary (Perth),

Kenneth, Amy and Nor have contributed to this fishing Post. You have made Perth very tempting for all of us here in Singapore. As for me, I am waiting to see if there are any special airfare promotions out of Singapore into Perth. Then, we will take a small group into Perth, to try to figure out why you and Stephen enjoy Perth so much. Yes, fishing will be on the agenda. Got kelong or not?

    Terence Seah

  10. Hi Kenneth,
You can get 2-3kg kim bak lor from Pulau Ubin. Coat them with belachan – wrap with banana leaves and foil and throw into the bbq – so yummy. I fished at Andaman Sea – caught bonito and garoupa.

    Hi Terence,
Try Jetstar for airfare to Perth. I booked PER-SIN-PER for Mar 09 – $380 incl tax. In Perth, you can fish and bbq at the beach – no booking, no fee. Here no kelong but we can share a caravan or sleep in ranger’s hut for a song – watch starry night and hooting wildlife.

  11. Hi fellow members on this post,
I had a wonderful time fishing for Abalone in Perth recently and thought that I should share it with you.
Just before I came out to S’pore in Nov.08, it was Abalone “season”. This is a once in a year opportunity when residents can fish for Roe Abalones in the West Coast Zone under a licence issued by the Dept of Fisheries. With the Sustainability Rules of the license, a lic holder can fish up to a max of 20 Roe Abalones (of min 6cm), on each of the 6 consec Sundays commencing from Nov 2 and in the hour between 7am and 8am. On the 2 Sundays that I went out for the abalones, I found that there were ample to be picked but one has to be very careful when the tides are coming in. Typically, you can see many Abalones on the rock on which you stand on. To pick, you select a good size one and capped one hand over it, then you ply it off the rock with a screw driver using the other hand. Cooking the abalones shortly after they were caught by double boiling for 2 hours with chicken stocks added, is a good way to preserve the sweetness and minimize any wastages of these precious catch.
The fishing for abalone season in the Northern and Southern Zones will continue to run till 15 May 2009. The Abalones in these areas are the Greenlip / brownlip varieties and the catch limit is 5 (of min 14 cm) per lic fisher or 10 on a vessel with 2 lic fishermen. I understand that most fishing spots are not for the novice. I will take a drive to see some of these locations to find out more, when I am next in Perth.
Incidentally, I am having instant noodle with my prized Abalone tomorrow.. yum yum.

  12. Hi Hou Chong, Terence, Mary and All

Hou Chong, you make catching abalone sound so easy. I’ve been here for more than 6 years and haven’t been out trying. Friends here have told me wonderful tales but seem to have given up on the activity.

Also I have yet to catch my first squid. My hubby and I met Mary and her hubby for fishing but could not catch hat we were hoping for and ended up at Mary’s place. She has a lovely home and garden with lots of herbs, fruit plants and we yakked instead. Left with different herbs to grow at home.

Mary, we will be going fishing with some friends at Cervantes. We remembered the 1st time catching herring, yellow tails and also buying live lobsters with the a few years ago. Will be going in Jan.

Wishing Terence and All a Very Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year 2009.

    Joan

  13. Lee Hou Chong.
Abalone! I love them and I mean the fresh ones, not those in tins.
But with instant noodles? What a contrast. I was about to say “what a waste” but thought better of it. It’s a matter of taste really. My daughters would say, “Yum, yum”.

My mum used to bring lots back from New Zealand and cook them plain in a crockpot for hours! The resulting soup is so tasty. She used it as stock for her cooking. Now, it’s so expensive, even in NZ that it’s not worth the trouble.

Have you tried grilling or simply frying them for a few mins? They are actually very tender eaten like that.

    MaryC

  14. Hi all you “fishermen” and “fisherwomen(?)”

All this talk about fishing brings back some fond memories I have of fishing in the Bay of Plenty with some friends. Yes, I HAVE gone fishing in the deep blue seas before, in fact not so long ago, in 2006.

There were 6 of us in a 20 (?) or 30(?) footer, I forgot, but it was a bit cramped. Any way, the lines were working nonstop. We caught so many big,red snappers, we stopped counting after the 30th one. My line seemed to be ‘laced with honey’ and I caught the most number of fish. Honest, no boasting, although I have to confess, I didn’t do the baiting, hee. I just couldn’t stand the wet, slippery prawns and squids they used. Luckily they didn’t use worms!

I did ‘battle’ with a beautiful kingfish, which I was forced to return to the deeps as it was 2 cm short of the minimum length. Such a disappointment really, but they ARE very strict about that in NZ, which I discovered when we returned back to shore. Some people ahead of us had their boat searched and their catch confiscated for contravening the regulations. Felt a bit sorry for them actually, but hey, who asked them to be so greedy?

We had so much fun that we went out again the next day, but the sea was so choppy we came back with a very much smaller catch that time.

I would so love to go on another fishing trip like that, provided I can fish from under the shade of the canopy of the boat, like I did in NZ, hee hee. It was actually very cold, which was very comfortable, unlike here where the heat and the humidity is enough to tire one out.

That was an experience to be remembered, thoroughly exciting and enjoyable.

  15. Hi Mary, and everybody in Perth,

I just look at the Jetstar flight return airfares from Spore to Perth for Mar and Apr 2009. Around $420 including taxes. Hmm, exciting. Jetty fishing trip, eeh?

Gosh, recession is here; and we are thinking of fishing in Perth. MaryC, high class lah. fishing on a 20 footer. I can only settle for jetty. And Hou Chong, you are so new in Singapore, and you are tempting us with instant noodles with expensive abalone. Joan, go catch some abalone quick, before the season is out.

Mary (Perth), any chance of a large bungalow near where you stay? for a month. I am dreaming; and good to try to make dreams come true. Maybe, ada chance to buy a bungalow at current australian prices. Have a fun weekend.

    Terence Seah

  16. Hi Hou Chong, I used to catch abalone with my brothers in Perth. Slice fresh abalone thinly and fry with garlic – eat with hot steamed rice! or put them in porridge. One Italian guy from Safety Bay gave me 20 fresh abalone for 20 branches of curry leaves from my garden – I stewed the abalone for home-made ipoh hor fun.

Hi Joan, how are your herbs doing? I just harvested some garlic this morning and I will wait for Amy Soon from SHC to come before we harvest the potatoes and red carrots. Which day of Jan are you going to Cervantes? I will be buying some live lobsters for Christmas tomorrow – want to come along?

Hi MaryC, you can come along fishing with us. I plan to go to Pulau Sibu or Besar when I go to Spore in March and we fish at night.

Hi Terence, $420 airfare is ok lah for recession. Joan, Linda and I are staying close to each other – nearby accomodation can be arranged. May your dreams come true – buy land, build sustainability home – relax, golf, fishing, catch abalone – taste the good life here…I am in holiday mood – baking and cooking for Christmas. You enjoy your weekend too.

  17. Hi MaryLee,

I have been following your interesting posts and I’m impressed you are a very capable DIY person- “fisherman”, “farmer” “entreprenuer” …. I would think
there will not be a dull moment having your companionship.
My latent interest in gardening is awakened after reading yr #19 post…”harvesting of garlic, potatoes & carrots.
Woa! how I wish I’m there to partake in those harvests and learn from you how to grow those produces -I’ll be filled with happiness to see how from seedlings, food are now produced. No chance of me doing here in my high-rise apartment.
Hope one day we’ll able to meet.
Seasons greetings to you & all SHC in Perth!
    Constance

  18. All these talk about fishing and life in Perth brings back memories for me.
I was a very poor student at the Uni from 1969 to 1972. Each summer I’ll go into the desert to earn my keep for the following year. I worked in the Wheat Bins receiving wheat from farmers.
One summer, I worked in Three Springs, about a days drive north of Perth. A local lad taught me how to drive in his mini car. After one lesson the local cop agree to give me a test on my Sunday break. I drove the officer round all the 10 houses in town and he ask me to park the car under a tree next to the police station. He offered me coffee in the station and gave me my driving licence. At the pub that night the local farmers had a good laugh about Mao ( they call me after Mao Tsi Tang)having a License to Kill.
Today I am still driving, thanks to the good people in Three Springs.

  19. Hi Constance, you can grow herbs in pots in your high-rise apartment. I can send you some seeds to start your herb garden. I keep seeds of basil (throw some leaves into seafood), chilli (4 varieties – birdeye is hot & best), parsley, rocket & lady-finger. Fill the pots with good potting mix – put in 5 seeds about 1cm under soil and water. Keep the pots under partial sun. I gave some basil seeds to Gwelyn at Hotboys kelong in April and she is enjoying the basil. You email marytan@iinet.net.au and I will send the seeds to Spore.

  20. Hi Tian Soo, wow who can forget such wonderful memories of how you got your license in trublu style. Any thoughts of coming to Perth?
One farmer invited me to their farm after she bought a bottle of emu oil from my stall at the market. I went to her farm of 1000 macadamia trees and she offered coffee with honey-comb & freshly baked blueberry cakes. We got along very well and she will always look out to hug & kiss that ’emu girl & emu boy’ (that’s me & hubby) at the market.

  21. I will be going to Ah Ngan Kelong from Dec 28 – 30 with church friends…will do catch report when I get back! We will be doing another trip with the church youths in Jan…anyone interested in joining us is more than welcomed.

  22. Hi MaryC,
Sure, we will meet next time either in Perth or Spore – I still have your mobile no. Happy Christmas to you & family too! Enjoy your holidays.

Hi Vincewong, where is Ah Ngan kelong? My grandson is waiting for me to book either kelong or island chalet for his next school holidays.

  23. Hi all,

I am new to this club. I recently lead a group of people to the kelong off Pasir Gogok near Pengarang JB.

We took the bum boat from Changi point ferry terminal to the kelong, which took about 90 minutes. We had seafood steamboat dinner and also a BBQ supper. Very relaxing. Got karaoke where we sang the whole night through.

Photos are available at http://www.flickr.com/photos/maxpac/sets/72157610891938106/ for your viewing pleasure.

  24. Hi all

Mary, can’t tomorrow as I’m playing golf. Trying to squeeze in golf whenever the weather is still quite cool to warm before the temperatures hit high 30s.

Regarding fishing at Cervantes on 7-8 Jan, a 3 hr drive from my place, I’ve booked a chalet for $159 for 7 people. It’s pretty reasonable as linen is also supplied. We’ll be fishing from the jetty which is lighted at night. The fun thing is that you can drive right up and even fish from the car boot. Maybe one day will go up with you.

Yes, Mary Chan, Terence and all, do come up to Perth one day. Mary and I can provide accomodation. For details, email me at joanwong2002@hotmail.com

If there are some who are interested in golf, I can help to arrange lessons with a golf pro. Playing golf here is cheaper than back home and that’s why I picked up the game here, especially as I overlook the nearby golf course.

Regarding fishing, hope to go fishing when I’m in S’pore – from a kelong? Mary (Perth), hope to meet you when we are there.

    Season’s greeting
    Joan

  25. Terence @18

The sight of Perth’s calm waters, clean beaches, and water-breakers/jetty everywhere makes going fishing ever so tempting ! I had a look at the satellite map of the Mandurah area in WA,Perth http://sg.geocities.com/sme_sg/mandurah.jpg . Do we still need to find a kelong there :) ?

March ’09 is good timing for me as it coincides with the school holidays.

    Hi Marylee @5,
Seems like you know more fishing spots in S’pore than many of us living here. Can have more details of the exact location of Sungei Buloh entrance and Ubin dams? What tackle and baits did you use for landing the baramundi in April here?

  26. Hi PatrickL,

Fishing from a kelong is very relaxing. I believe that there are many people, especially retirees who love this peace and quiet on a kelong, besides the trill of having that little monster at the end of the line.

When I first put up this kelong post, I was thinking of have another overnight out in Batam, Malaysia or even within Singapore waters. Really, I am looking for someone who is going on such a trip, and I will tag along with other SHC guys and gals.

    Terence Seah

  27. It does seem there are many attractions in Perth. Fishing and golf are just some of them. No need to confirm your participation, but just on a show of hands, how many of you would be interested to go to Perth between 15 Mar and 15 Apr 2009.

We can have some crazy moments with Joan and Mary, and their families, drink red wines, go fishing, catch abalone, have outdoor BBQ, have golf, meet up with other Singaporeans in Perth. I have been to Perth a number of times, and I think Perth is nostalgic, fresh and liveable. If this works, we can go to Perth once a year, every year.

Mary and Joan, thank you for creating a vision for Perth, for us SHCians here in Singapore.

    Terence Seah

  28. Hi Patrick #31
The fishing pond is along Neo Tew Road – just after the Sungel Buloh entrance – you start fishing at 8 p.m. just before they release the big fishes for the evening. Baramundi loves live prawns – you can use a float with a longer leader.
The fishing spot at Pulau Ubin – turn left from Wayang stage, pass the CC, then Jln Jelutong, then Jln Edut Senin -you can fish at 2 bridges – prefer the one after Kampung Ubin chalets. Start to fish during the 2 intervals when the neap tide is going out – around 10th & 25th of lunar calendar. You can use prawns for bait – either using a float or use a rolling swivel and a ball sinker.

You can check out other hot fishing spots & what tackle to use at http://www.geocities.com/checkitoutsg/index

  29. Hi Joan
Abalone fishing can be risky and it is advisable to have an experienced fisher guide you on your first outing. As for Squid, perhaps they are not yet in season on your last outing. Last year, while my friend and I sat in a small boat drifting aimlessly off the waters of Garden island, a couple of large Squids came by. These Squid repeatedly attached themselves to our fishing lines but would drop off each time we haul them above the water level. We finally changed to Squid Jigs and were then able to bring up 2 large ones (over a foot long) to bring back. I hope this story will encourage you to go on trying.

    Hi MaryC,
Thanks for your recommendation re cooking Abalone. Will certainly try grilling or frying them for a few mins or cooking them in a Crockpot. They can so easily become tough and chewy if cooked in a wrong manner. NZ sounds like a good place for the Ardent fisherman.

    Hi Mary Lee,
Is there any chance your Italian friend might want other leaves, maybe Laksa leaves (Dal Kosong) in exchange for Abalone?. he he .
Porridge with Abalone is indeed beautiful. I had this exact dish for breakfast 2 weeks ago in an Asian Country (+30degN). I suspect this country has overfished their abalone stock to the extend that they are now difficult to find in the market and very costly if available. Becuz of such situations, I come to appreciate the local Fisheries Dept’s conservation programmes to manage the ecologically sustainable levels .
You obviously know a lot about fishing, cooking, gardening etc. I hope you will allow me to tapped on your expertise or share some ideas at some future time – gardening is one of my favourite past time. I will be in Perth from Jan 09 and will be contacting you then.

    Hi Tian Soo,
I like your story about how you got your driver’s licence. I hope to see you again soon as I may be visiting your farm within the next few days. However if I can’t make it, then I hope you will call on me the next time you come to WA for Golf.

    Hi Terence,
Thanks once again for making it possible for SHC members to get together.
I looked forward to meeting you again in S’pore or in WA .
As I mentioned previously, do let me know if you are coming to WA and I will assist wherever I can, to find suitable arrangements for you and those traveling with you.
    HC

  30. Terence,

Yes, kelong fishing is indeed fun. Could see it from the pics posted online by ystay. Me too looking fwd for a trip to the kelong as I’ve not been to one.

As for Perth, am interested if time is right.

  31. Hi Hou Chong,
We add curry leaves in curries, my Oz friends blend them with olive oil & garlic, then spread the mix on chicken or other cuts before tossing them into the oven or bbq. They bought my laksa leaves & infuse them in hot tea.
In Perth, we follow local fisheries guidelines and throw back undersized fish, crabs, etc.
I learned heaps on fishing, cooking & gardening from my parents as I grew up with chooks & fresh eggs; organic veggies; where to dig for clams, how to cast nets for prawns & how to stick crab-traps at the mud-banks along the Serangoon river. Here in Perth, I am still learning to grow different veggies for each season, local fishing techniques and most importantly how best to cook our catch and produce.
Please contact me when you are here in Jan09.

  32. Dear Marylee, Lawrence Lee

Ah Ngan is one of the 4 kelongs situated off Sibu Island. Its a 2 hr drive from S’pore to Tanjung Lehman Jetty and from there we take a halfhour ferry ride to the kelong. Over the years, I’ve picked up many different kelong fishing techniques so that I can target for different species of fishes at different times/tide changes during the night. This trip we target not only large selars, but also snooks, papan selar, big eye travellys, half-beaks, wolf herrings and sotong. I’ll try to capture all the different techniques we use on photos during this trip and show them to you all. Cheers.

  33. Terence,
Next year, I will have my term break in March, between the 15th and the 22nd of March. If you are planning a Perth trip then, I am interested. If it stretches to after the 22nd to the 29th, I might be able to get leave, but it would be better in the week of the 15th.
So keep me in mind. I’m keen.

  34. Hi Vincent,
Ah Ngan sounds good. How to book and how much per person? 1/2 hr boat ride is just right. Are you organising for SHC during school holidays?

I stayed at Sibu island & we went night fishing on a boat near Tinggi – caught heaps of big sotongs, some barracudas, sting-rays and red emperors.

  35. Hi Terence,

Thanks for posting this interesting forum, Fishing at kelong sounds interesting, I have never experienced this before, would like to try one day if my time permits.

Well, fishing is a great way to combat boredom, fish are dumb because they eat almost everything, from feathers to wooden lures, besides that we learn about nature & different types of fish & different techniques of fishing as well.

I remembered my Dad & Mum told me about their catch of abalones in Australia when they visited my surgeon brother in Melborne, I missed that experience as I joined them later, they had a good catch indeed that they cooked abaloned meals every day from abalone with liver porridge to abaloned steam boat, they even brought lots of them home.

I admire Mary Lee & Joan Wong from Australia, it seems they are very experienced in fishing, must learn from both of you one day, carry on the good job and enjoy yourselves, nice to meet you here, too.

This leisure experience suits me as I love quiet, calm & soothing environment to relax and recharge.:P

Thanks for other SHC members ,too in sharing your experiences about fishing.

    Have a Wonderful year ahead!

    Cheers to all!!!

  36. Hi Terence,
Am interested in Perth and Sibu Kelong trips.
Maybe can start new postings to get interested members to sign up.

Cheers & Merry X’mas to all

  37. Haha, Mary-C, it’s very bold and audacious for you to say it so openly at #15. Let’s see what went on in your mind which triggers off thots in my mind now.

“Abalone! I love them and I mean the fresh ones, not those in tins. But with instant noodles? ……….what a waste but ……it’s a matter of taste really. My daughters would say, “Yum, yum”.

I too love fresh juicy and wet abalones but it’s squeamish to read of people wanting to put them in tins (and the cruel carving out process, to do that). I do however agree that it’s a waste with noodles which, long they may be, are skinny which will never quite give the arrgh arrgh sensation. It amuses me that yr kids had said it’s a matter of taste and gave the “yum yum” to noodles.

“My mum used to bring lots back from New Zealand……..used them as stock….”

She must have had a good reason to import and keep stock of ang mo abalones ……she must have had a lot of ang mo friends here?

“Have you tried grilling or simply frying them for a few mins? They are actually very tender eaten like that”.

No I dont grill, fry and eat them. I “eat” abalone differently…….nibble gently, tenderly and, in the course, do in different styles & patterns. That usually lasted for almost an hour, not minutes…….

  38. Hi Terence,

Me too keen on the Perth or nearby kelong trip.
In fact, airfare at $420 (all in?) return sounds like a
    great deal.
Looks like the Perth itinery is as good as the Mae Hong Son trip
Wonder how much it would cost for lodging, food, transport,
fishing and other misc expenses if we stay there for a week?

    james

  39. Hi All

    #38 Hou Chong
I really hope to catch squid, abalone and maybe bigger fish one day. I lost a few hooks and squid jigs and I suspect that it must be the squids that got them. I could not reel in my line and that fish? actually pulled my line towards the jetty supports. The line then broke and once a friend of mine experienced the same and nearly was pulled into the water. That was scary! I thought I could learn from Mary (Perth) but on that day when we met up, there was no fish/squid.

Mary is now also planning to go to Cervantes in Jan. Hope that our 2 groups can meet up – all very keen on fishing. So those who are coming in Jan, perhaps it’s a time to meet up.

    #34 Terence
Yes, if you all are planning to come in Mar, if you need accomodation, let me know. Email me directly if it’s easier to discuss costs and what you want to do. Mary and I have discussed some aspects. Where she has a bagful of activities planned for members, I tend to be more laid back and am looking at a relaxing sort of programme – golf, fishing, sightseeing drives to wineries, markets. It may therefore be just B & B that I can provide.

I will be in S’pore from 1 Apr for 2 months. In August, my hubby, me and a relative are doing a self-drive from Perth – Adelaide- Victoria. We have decided not to campervan.

    Season’s wishes to all
    Joan

  40. I just became “hooked” into fishing! Since I returned from a 3D/2N visit to a very unique kelong called The Shalom Resort. http://shalomresort.webs.com
My family of 4 thoroughly enjoyed the stay and the time to bond. I never knew fishing at a kelong was so easy – especially when fishing for bait fishes such as kuning and other smaller fishes.
Apart from those small ones, I got myself a table size parrot fish, some selahs and a couple of sotongs (squids).
Check out the photos at http://www.freewebs.com/shalomresort/gallery.html

Looking forward to visiting the haven again…soon.
    Cheers.

Oh, looks like our ‘liud’ friend, Tim Liu is back with his usual lewd comments!
Someone should put him on a hot grill and make him squirm for his love of twisting people’s words.

  42. Hi Joan
    Re: your # 53
What you described is similar to my experience with fishing Black Beam under the Causeway Bridge at Swan River. The Beam upon being hooked, would dash for the rocks to take refuge. Nearly always, the fishing line would be entangled on the rocks and recovering it, is seldom successful. I do not know what is the solution. Perhaps reeling in the fish quickly would deprive it of any opportunity to make a run.
Cervantes – this is one of the location which I have picked (on Google Earth) previously as a “must” to visit because of the unusually broad beach covered in white sand (appear to be anyway). Do you know whether the condition of the coastal road leading to this township is reasonably good ? I asked because my car do not carry a spare tyre.

  43. Hi MaryLee & JoanWong(Perth),

WOW,WOW !! both of you are great in promoting ” WELCOME TO PERTH”. I been to Perth many years ago. From this thread with all the interesting activities mentioned here, I am all ready to raise my hands to join in, fishing, kelong and trip to Perth, wow, wow.

Amy,I envy you,shd be in Perth now with MaryLee, right? Wish you a nice stay in Perth.

Thanks for other SHC members ,too in sharing your experiences about fishing.

MERRY CHIRSTMAS & have a Wonderful year ahead!

    Cheers to all!!!

    Lilian

  44. Hi Hou Chong, Lilian and All

I will be up in Cervantes 7-8 Jan and will meet Mary as well as her family, SHC Amy and friend. I’ll be up with my hubby, a cousin and 2 other fishing friends.

Hou Chong, I hope the coastal road is open as it was a dirt track when we last went. It will cut down distance and will be a scenic drive. Will let you know after my trip. We had to travel back to Brand Hwy but it was a pleasant ride. We also visited Jurien Bay which has grown tremendously. Brand Hwy is very scenic during springtime with the wildflowers in season. Hope to do a drive up to Kalbarri next spring.

Perth is certainly a good place to unwind and enjoy the simple pleasures like walks, fish and just take in the scenery and have the time to do what you like. Am certainly looking forward to meeting you all in Perth.

    Joan

  45. Hi Joan
    Re: your #59

Thank you for the info. I look forward to hearing about your trip to Cervantes etc. I have driven many times to the South ie Albany, Esperance etc but made only limited trips to the North. Guess there must be much in the offering up North as well.

With the plans for a likely trip to Perth by SHC members on another thread, it would be useful for Mary, Yourself and Myself, to discuss some arrangements for the visitors. Shall we get-together after your trip?.

    Have an enjoyable trip.
    HC

  46. Hi Hou Chong,

Are you an Australian resident? If you are, and like Mary and Joan, I would like to learn and understand what makes you move to Perth. Take some time, we should have this activity sometime.

    Terence Seah

  47. Hi Terence,
    Re: yr #61
Yes I am a Resident of Australia.

When I was closing onto 50, I decided to make some changes to my daily routine (we have but only one life afterall ). So I did what I did aiming to do what I haven’t done and to have what I didn’t have. Otherwise, there was no Push or Pull factor at that time. Perth was just a personal choice.

In today’s news : a man went missing off Pt Kennedy believed to be taken by a 4m Gt White Shark. Fragments of his wetsuit were recovered. Offshore diving or fishing is not suitable for the moment.

  48. Hi Daniel,

The pictures at bobshoestayresort.com look tempting. We can definitely go there for a 2D/1N event, with fishing and some food thrown in.

From the map, I guess there is no sea but a lake or river. Would you consider going with me in March, over a Sat/Sun. Once we both agree, we will start a group. What do you think? I just love the trill of having the ugly looking kup-kup at the end of the line.

    Terence Seah

  49. Yeap i agreed with Terence#65, d pictures at bobshoestayresort.com looks very tempting. Don’t like going up to Malaysia on weekends too crowded how about weekdays anyone?? Me and my husband knows nothing about fishing anyone interested to take the led?

    cheers

  50. Guys

I just came back from a 3 Day, 2 Night stay at Ah Ngan Kelong, off Sibu Island. We were a party of 12 from the same church. We went up to Tg Lehman Jetty on Sunday 5.30am in the morning in 3 cars and got there at 8am. Going thru the new Malaysian customs and immigration complex takes some getting used to….so first timers should go early to avoid the traffic jams…it can get pretty frustrating getting stuck on the causeway!

Getting to the kelong was a breeze but when we got there, I got my first shock…the kelong was packed with fishermen and their families – about 100 people staying over! Lesson learnt…never go kelong on the last 2 weeks of school holidays!

With the crowd, fishing was’nt very fun but there were huge schools of baitfish – at the end of Day 1 we caught about 300pcs of tamban, kunning, some selar.

The expected school of selar did not materialise but those selars that were caught were huge – averaging around 800gms each.

Over the 2 nights the fishes were there but no feeding frenzy coz we had dead current at night. With howling winds coming from the mainland and dead current, it was very difficult to cast the lines; and with so many rods, it became very easy to tangle your line with other people’s lines. Quite frustrating. The highlight of my trip was Day 2 morning at 5.30am – I caught my largest wolf herring (saitoh) ever – it was abt 3ft long and weigh 2.5kg! It caught me by surprise coz I hv not seen anybody catching such a huge saitoh!

Because the fish were not in a feeding mood, all the various fishing techniques employed had limited success in catching the fish we wanted. However, we had good company, good food, the weather was pretty decent and the nights were very cool. All in all it was a good vacation and reasonable at Rm 255 per pax.

    Enjoy the pictures…..

  51. There seems to be a complete absence of fish in the ‘Gallery’, ‘Attractions’, etc in the resort’s website. Just wondering whether there will be anything worth fishing for there. Anybody who has been there able to provide more info on this?

The place seems to promoted as a resort, with fishing as an afterthought.

    Terence:

I thought the banner at the top was supposed to be used for photos of SHCians. Are we now accepting dried fish as members, or do members now look like dried fish? :o)

    Cheers,

    Ron Koh
    (yes, still alive and kicking)

  52. Hi Terence,
Pasir Gogok kelong looks promising as it is off Pengarang JB by bum boat from Changi Point to Pengarang – this was recommended by SHC newbie Yong Seng #29.

  53. Haha, Ron-K, you are absolutely spot-on…………this is how some of us look like when we decide to remove our make-up and be our prestine selves…………

  54. Hi all,

I’ve this local spot to share with you. You might want to try your luck here before heading to a Kelong. Good chance of hooking up garhish with a float, small hooks and white bread.

I recce this location yesterday and witnessed fishermen there catching garfish and sea bass. Was there for about an hour and saw uncles hauling up a sea bass and some garfish, all about 12 to 18inches in length. This fishing spot seemed to be less crowded than Bedok Jetty where half of the stretch of end section is now temporary closed.

I will find a time when high tide coincides with either dusk or dawn to fish there. You may contact me at pat1404sg@gmail.com if you wish to tag along.

The spots where the fishes were landed are circled RED

  55. Hi Daniel #1

I’m afraid d frequent Malaysia traveler from sg who fishes does not know that kelong contact. He think maybe its because kelongs appeal more to holiday makers rather than to serious anglers.

    cheers

  56. Hi All

Back from 2N/3D fishing trip at Cervantes, a 3 hr drive north of Perth.Though summer, the temperatures in the shade were pleasantly cool and it was breezy. We had expected it to be very hot, in the mid 30s and so had decided to do evening/night fishing.

On the 2 evenings, we started at 7pm and 9 pm and ended at 2am and 1.30 am. Altogether, 3 of us caught 45 fishes – mostly herring, a few yellowtails and skippies. Our 2 friends caught around 45 also. Not too good for 2 days.

I must say this. We met Mary and Steven with their guests, Amy and Lynn when we checked in. that 1st evening, Mary taught me how to catch fish My line was all tangled up. She took a look and said that my line was too long etc and as she was leaving, she passed her berley cage, hook, bait etc to me. After that, I was catching fish – caught 23 that day out of the 25!! Thanks Mary. Those who want to go fishing in Perth, you must get hold of Mary.

Also as it’s crafish/lobster season, each cost AUD 12 but as we ordered 1 dozen, we paid only $10 each.

Next few days we will be enjoying what’s left of our catch after giving some away and yes, the lobsters.

Cheers and happy fishing wherever you are
    Joan

  57. Joan (Perth),

Here, we talk about fishing in Malaysian and Indonesia waters. You talk about fishing out of Perth Australia.

Aiyah, time to give up out job and come and join you. Reality, reality, but not impossible. Keep your fishing and other Aussie attractions coming, lobsters and abalones included.

This week here singaporeans talk about the 50+ and the Silver market. And tomorrow about our Stars-in-Concert. Next week, we will firm our Perth schedule. Cheerio.

    Terence Seah

  58. Hi Joan,

You guys are great – fishing till morning! We caught 28 fishes and bought 12 lobsters (I boiled them at the holiday home). From Cervantes, we drove up to Jurien Bay and then to Moora, New Norcia, Swan Valley for Margaret River chocolates and wine tasting and then headed to Manduring for world-class pizza. Yesterday Amy, Lynn & I took the train from Success to Wellard to visit an ex-principal from Spore before touring Rockingham, Peron Point and Safety Bay, then back to Kardinya for shopping. This morning we headed to Perth city for more shopping and to Fremantle for fish & chips, then to Mundijong for macadamia ice-cream. Amy & Lynn leave for Spore tonight.

We plan to drive to Esperance during CNY – wanna come along?

  59. Hi Terence #75

Hope that you and other SHCians will realise your dreams of retirement soon – sometimes it’s just a matter of making a decision but at the time that you think is right. Recession has a kickstart effect. Advice is to start planning for retirement when things are OK. Will see how the schedule works out.

    Hi Mary #76
You truly have boundless energy – must be the honey you are taking! Esperance? When and some details. Are you thinking of fishing there? If dates are suitable, maybe.

    Cheers
    Joan

  60. Hi Mary

Dates are out as my daughter will not be around then to help look after our cats, birds etc. Keep us posted of your trips wnd hope to go together another time.

We are going fishing on Wed morning – 6.30 am at Woodman Pt. Hope to catch whiting. Join us if you can. Still have your 2 plastic ontainers. Thanks for the ice cream and cooked food – liked the fish with the sauce.

    Joan

  61. Hi Joan,
The fish with sauce was the salmon we caught from Mandurah last week. This evening we caught another 2 big skippies and 4 blue herrings from Mandurah – already pickled 2 herrings for lunch tomorrow. May join you at Woodman Pt.

  62. Dearest MaryL

I have been following this post and am very envious each time I read how much fish you caught…hmm… am anticipating for that day to come when I will go back
to Perth just for fishing with you & Stephen.

Happy fishing and hope to see you again in Singapore some time.

    Suzhang

  63. Dearest Sue,
I am still waiting for you & hubby to come leh. Amy & Lynn from SHC came last week and we went out for 3 fishing trips – Coogee (mackerel), Dawsville Cut (salmon & herring) and Cervantes with Joan-from-Perth & her family.

  64. Dear MaryL,

You’re making me envious again.. wow, that’s a pretty good catch. You must be enjoying those fishing trips. You can have lobster salad and Salmon Yu-Sheng for your reunion dinner all fresh from the sea hor…. so nice. Yeap, I will keep you inform of my trip when the time comes.

Meanwhile stay healthy & happy and wishing you & all at home a happy Lunar New Year!

    Cheers,
    Suzhang

  65. Thanks, Sue. May you & family be blessed with Good Health and Good Wealth, Gong Xi Fa Cai & nian nian yu yi.

We are going fishing on eve of CNY to get some fresh herring for yu-sheng.

  66. Hi Mary

Didn’t see you on Wed. We caught 23 sand whiting, first time, at Woodman point. For dinner, fried them and ate the, bones and all as they were small and crispy. Whitings are Ikan pasir pasir that we used to catch at Changi and P. Tekong back in the 60s-70s.

Will try to drop by to return your containers. Who knows, may even see you at Dawesville next week, if you are going there.

Most likely will be going to Cervantes again in Mar for fishing and crayfish.

Gong Xi Fa Chai to you and family
    Joan

  67. Hi Joan,

Sorry could not join you at Woodman point as I had visitors in the morning & 2 trips to the airport.

Wow, you got ikan pasir – I used to catch heaps from Mews Road (near Kailis) and Rockingham jetty. I am also planning Cervantes – let me know the dates so we can fish together under the moonlight (last night 11p.m the moon was so huge & lovely). I love more crayfish too as I am sending the last dozen to Spore this week.

  72. Hi Mary Lee #84 n #89

Fresh fish n fruits straight from the garden……..how I wish I have that for my ingredients on my “low hi dish” during CNY. Can u email me your pictures of fresh veggie & fruits plants in your garden? I m a garden lover but not my cousin in Perth, I am hoping that on my next trip I will find enough time to do some digging and bring some life into her bare garden in Canning Vale. My email “limfreda@gmail.com”

    cheers

  73. Hi Freda,
I can give you some seeds or seedlings of herbs like basil, curry leaves, rockets, galangal, coriander & parsley if you want to plant them in your cousin’s garden. My place is 15 mins drive to Canningvale. I have emailed some photos to you.
