Dinner on 25 April 2009 at the H.K. Best Soup Restaurant

Dear SHC Friends,

Do you believe in drinking soup as a culture for life longevity ? Well, the HongKongers and Southern Chinese in China have done it.  As Chinese and especially the Cantonese, we were told by our mom, grandma, or even great grandma that drinking soup regularly is good for our body.

Basically, tonic soup is very nourishing to the soul, it improves blood circulations, boost energy and also increase one immunity level. It is also proven to be good for the overall well being.

There are many varieties of herbal soups. Do check this out if you want to know more on Chinese Herbal receipes on soup and its articles  : http://herbal.recipes.googlepages.com/index.html
(Disclaimer : By the way, the author is also Susan, but it’s not me……..) emoticon

Last weekend, about twenty of us (SHCians) attended a brief talk on the secret cum preparation of chinese herbal tonic soup  at “H.K. BEST SOUP” Restaurant. The owner/chef (???) is from Hong Kong, a highly respectable cook and is specialized in double-boiled soup. He is also a famous column writer on soup preparation/cooking in our local Chinese newspaper, ????.

For those who are curious and also to experience what Chef ? have in store for us, we are organizing a Hong Kong (Cantonese) cuisine dinner in April. This special value for money menu which Chef ? quoted for us, should not be missed !  For $220.00 per table, we are having “Pen Cai” (??) as our main course and also a special double-boiled wild yam or "Huai Shan" (??) soup. That’s not all, please scroll down to see the list of food in the menu below. This works out to be $22.00 per person nett only.

Read more about "Huai Shan" and its goodness here : http://herbal.recipes.googlepages.com/articles_30.html

(Note : for those not familiar (including me !)emoticon  “Pen Cai” (??) is the next popular dish after “Buddha Jumps Over The Wall” – ???)

  5. Hi Lina
Sorry for the inconvenience reg my DBS a/c. It should be Autosave and not Current. How did you transfer using internet? I have never done it using internet so I’m curious as to how you did it. Anyway thanks a million for the trouble caused.

    Regards
    Koh Tong Seng

  6. Hi Tong Seng,

Transferred by internet $44/- Ref. 2189997994 into your DBS Autosave account (tried current account and it did not work). Hope to meet you and your wife one of these days. Have a good day.

  7. Hi Lina Ng
My DBS a/c is a current account. Thank you very much for helping me to get the 2 replacements. The money transfer should not be a problem as POSB and DBS a/c holders use the same ATM for banking services.
Once again thank you and we wish all of you will have a great and delicious dinner on that evening.
We certainly would like to meet you one day.

But King Seng Lee said that he did an ATM transfer today. Sorry, King Seng, I don’t meant to doubt you. Do you by any chance have a Ref. No.? So sorry to trouble you.

  29. HI Lina

Today I transferred S22.00 into your POSB
Ac.122-04284-7, Ref: 4164, for myself. Please
    to inform. Thanks.

    Lee Patrick (song Juan)

  30. Haha! Thanks Maureen. So yours is the one with the special transfer. I thought it was a cute transfer cos there was one entry for $20/- and another one for $2/-. Once again, thank you for your support.

  31. Hi Lina:
I just transferred $22 into yr A/C, ATM Rec Ref 5782 for $20 & via Teller Rec No 00575 for $2, both dated 10.03.09, Sav A/C Name-Lin Sai Hong/Ng Lim Lina.

Ha ha…….. my place is guaranteed.

    C u then……yummy….yummy

  32. Thanks Helen Wong for the ATM transfer of $22/-, today. Somebody deposited cash $22/- into my account today. Wonder who?

Susan, wolfberry, besides being beneficial to the eyes also makes the soup sweet.

  33. Susan

You can buy wolfberry or boxthorn seed or frucius lycii
or “gou qi zi” (small red seed) as they called from any medical hall or supermarket. It is well known for eyes. People normally drink “kau kei tong” vegetable soup with egg white flower.

Hope this information helps you. Happened to be on the post on payment.

    Regards
    Helen

  34. Many thanks Terence and Daisy Yeo, for the payment. Mystery lady, thanks for your support. So, we meet again! Terence, am sure my money is more than safe with TL and JH.

Friends, remember to steep a handful of seedless dates and wolfberry in boiling hot water for a rosy complexion, good health and vitality! Drink this everyday. Easy to prepare.

  35. Hi Lina at #84. The mystery person is me! Transfer done at 10:07am today.

Thanks Suzhang for making it possible for both Maureen and me! Thanks too to Lina & Ah Nee!

Shall look forward to the makan besar with all of you.

  36. Hi Lina,

I read you have two bodyguard bouncers. One is JH and the other is TL. Very safe. I just transferred $22 to the account today. Reference 2155158918.

    Looking forward to dish #6.

    Terence Seah

  37. Lina, of cos others got to be careful of you………you are so sexy & seductive that once when I wasnt careful, I almost tripped following you into the ladies.

Seriously, you’re very ok and so are those I know. But into the future, Darwin’s theory will be tested. believe me………………

  38. Thanks Tim, will be careful. Or is it others have to be careful of me, haha! I know you have our welfare at heart. So you want a milk drinking party?

Neo Sock Cheng, thank you for the payment received 9/3/09. Who is the other mystery person who did the transfer today?

  39. Thnaks Caroline for the info and Dennis Wee for the payment. Also thank you to 2 others who did ATM transfers to my account today. Kindly identify yourselves.

Chin Boon, you are most welcome to pay me when you see me next. Your money will be in safe hands cos I got 2 Cisco Bodyguards. And I don’t even know SExy NG is a lady or a gentleman.

  40. Dennis-W, you said you paid, I also say I paid but there was only i sum of 2,200 cents that went into Lina’s account so the mystery deepens as to who the real honest payer was.

Heeee, of cos I didnt pay…..why wd I when there will hardly be any soup to drink (I prefer drinking milk right from where the milk flows) so I’ll leave cow beh with you and take cow bu for myself.

Jokes aside, with membership growing and money flowing, folks got to be very careful, whether you’re paying or receiving money. According to 1 theory (think it’s Darwin’s theory), if things can go wrong, it will.

And if things do go wrong, it can go very wrong……say a 14-day full-board & guided holiday to the States’ west coast selling for S$1,800, very cheap but not unbelievable so it’s tantalisingly enticing. Imagine 100 persons sign up, it’s a tidy S$180,000, enough for someone to vanish in the States…….

Heee, Dennis-W, Lina & Sue wont run away with yr 2,200 cents, they have assets worth only second to Walnut Buffet but it’s good to be very careful………….

  41. Hi Lina @ #75 & 76

I was the 1 who transferred the money 2 ur a/c on sat 08/03. Ref nbr is 9241. I cld not log on as my pc was down. Sori 4 dat.

    Cheers
    Dennis

  42. Chin Boon, Chin Boon,

You’ve got the best deal in town ! $22 bucks is damn cheap for securing a meal in H.K……ha.ha..

Hi Sockie #36, Got lah, you’re in ! “Huan Yin, Huan Yin” :)

#73 Jane Loh, we can’t squeeze in 11 per table as it’s rather uncomfortable. Sorry to disappoint you as we have already reached the max. of 60 pax. You have been placed on WL for now.

#77 ChrisC, we didn’t know your walk was on the same day as ours. By the way, where’s the walk ? Perhaps those who join the walk can come for dinner after that?

    Ah Nee

  43. Lina, what’s all this that I am “in already”? In where? I have to wait till that SExy NG is out too! I don’t get any sensation leh? Whatever, thanks for your effort, now it costs me 22 bucks for that in/out huh. Let me know when payment’s due.

  44. #13 Dear JoyceT,,, we shall not rescheduled again! You are right, the Monthly walk for April had been rescheduled TWICE! The original date given for D&D was in MAR09! and when we heard that it was changed; not to clash with it we have had the walk rescheduled and due to the Good Friday weekend; from the normal 2nd Saturday each month, we had changed it to the 4th Sat.

Joyce, the monthly walk for APRIL – 25th shall be as scheduled; we had done enuf recce, this trail is enjoyable and easy. The walk can be finished in 2 hours, let’s start at 4pm, I shall co-lead with you…. no worries, go, enjoy your trip this coming weekend.

    Cheerio!
    ChristinaCL Chan

  45. Weiwei Lina.

I think its Dennis Wee who made the transfer on 8/3/09 cos he mentioned it and that he could not log on.

    Cheers
    Caroline Gee

  46. Thanks Yew Kwong. Sexitary, kindly put paid against Yew Kwong and Jade Phua.

Someone did a $22/- ATM transfer to my account on 8/3/09. Kindly identify yourself. (This is besides Ann Lim.)

Chin Boon you are in already, now that SE Ng is out.

  47. Hi Suzhang,
As there are 4 persons on the waiting list for the 25 April H K Best soup dinner, is it possible to squeeze one into each table making it 11 persons. I know sometimes the table can be quite big. However, I’ll understand if otherwise. Thanks and regards,
    Jane Loh

  48. Sorry to say this. If S.E. Ng is not yet a member, it is not fair to put him/her up there and deprive our SHC member a place in this event.

  49. Hi Lina #67

  57. Wow Dolly, you are super efficient in updating this post.. so many paid already huh? Thank you, thank you……thanks to all who have paid. It’s really encouraging.

#49 – Yes, payment is important to secure a place cos we have to have 10 to make a table to enjoy this amount he quoted (S$220.00 per table).

Registration is now closed. For those on the waiting list, do not be dismay, we can always organise another one. Alternatively, you can visit H.K. Best Soup on your own to try out their food.

#52 Maria, you are right, we have to thank Eyvonne Chew for her recommendation to this restaurant. Frankly, I did get to taste his cooking yet cos was too full after the 2 bowls of soup that day. I guess Gingko, Eyvonne, Karen & some others who have eaten there can tell us more ? :)

Eyvonne #40, I am confused. Is Neo Sock Cheng or Ng Sock Cheng(38)? Noticed there’s another one Lee Seok Cheng on the WL too. [scratching my head…].

  58. Hi..Terence, nice to know you are joining us. This is not your usual tom yam goong. HK Best Food was first spotted by Eyvonne Chew in the Chinese Papers and she is kind enough to arrange for some of us to meet the si fu to listen to his talk and sample his soup. I guess all of us need regular dose of “por”, the chinese herbal way.

  63. Wei Wei Dolly…Help, help!

I can’t edit my post leh. Can you tell me how ? I can’t find the edit button.

Sigh ! Am tired & need to sleep. Can I check with you tmr?

Joyce #13 & Susan #20 – Unfortunately, we have committed to this date & unable to change it.

This afternoon, after learning that we have exceeded 40 pax, I called up the restaurant to book another table. Didn’t know that there are more coming….hmm..guess I hv to call him again tomorrow for table #6, but no promise yet. The rest will have to put on waiting list till I finalised with him.

  65. Oh oh, I forgot.

  66. How Suzhang? I also want to go. Can or not? On table no. 6 with Maureen.

Maureen, I think we got chance, lah. With a little charm from the 3 musketeers on Chef ?, we will be enjoying lunch together on 25th April. Right, EOs? Pressure, pressure, ha ha ha…

Suzhang, next time got good kang tao, please open your office window and yell to me about it, okay? I surely can hear one or ask Ah nee to help in shouting.

  67. Hi EOs

Wow! Looking at the response to this dinner, maybe you can check with Chef ? if you could ‘bao’ his restaurant that evening and the maximum no. of tables he can put up in his restaurant. This way, more can come and less will be disappointed.

    Oi Cheng

  68. Hi EOs:

  74. Suzhang, this soup activity is over-whelmingly successful. I have an idea for Tim, if he thinks there is not enough soup This week I was in Seoul and I tried numerous noodle soups. However, I kept the soup packets, as I found them to be too sweet and salty. So no worries, I bring the soup packets along. Just add in the chicken and the prawns. Well done.

  75. Hi EOs,

Your event selling like hot cakes. Immediately from the oven and next moment, taken up. Now, there are ppl on the ‘waiting list’. Spoilted for choice nowadays.

I have registered for the Walk. PLR3 already missed, now PLR4. Really spoilted for choice.

Dolly – ya lor, cycling on the 18th. Also cannot miss this event. Is a once a month affair.

  76. All places were snapped up within hours of offer and all bcos of soup. But if you look thru the menu carefully, other than dish 6, whuich is soup, the rest are neither soup or susu.

In fact, if you sieve all the liquid out of the other dishes into a pot, you may not have enough for distibution as soup to all 10 seated at one table. Worse, if someone blur blur drops dish 3 into this pot of potpurri, what-little-you-have in there will all be soaked up and it’s a case of soupy bo mati…..

So go enjoy the food glorious food but if you think too much of soup you will probably end up sobbing like they do in a soap opera……….

  77. Susan, mai change la… we have cycling event on 18/4, dun 1 2 miss that event cos March, I hv to miss cycling liao..

Pls pls EO ?, mai change hor.. Dolly

  78. Hi Suzhang, Ah Nee and Lina,

Please include me for the dinner at H. K. Best Soup Restuarant. I am a Cantonese and my grandmother used to boil soups for us to drink everyday, such as ‘old cucumber’ soup, ‘water cress’ etc. I love to drink soups but nowadays I never get a chance to drink the authentic ones, so this should be enjoyable.

    Cheers

    Bernie

  79. Hi Susan / Ah Nee,

We’ve no doubt how Chinese Herbal cuisines benefit us and your menu looked so tempting.

Just to highlight that due to SHC’s D&D and Good Friday in April, the monthly walk for April has been rescheduled to 25Apr. This date was mentioned twice by Christina under ‘posting on monthly walks’ on 21 & 30 January.

Is it possible to change your timing or may be the walk for April should be rescheduled again?

    Cheers,

  80. Hi Susan,

Thank you for putting up such a comprehensive introduction, with Chinese as well. Susan, would have liked to put up the names of those interested for you, but have no edit feature.

Guys/gals, we put 12 names up first to make this post different. Should you not be able to make it, not to worry, we will be happy to remove your names.

Dan, ‘3 mustketeers’ or ‘3 spice girls’, we are glad for your support. Also thank you Dolly, Caroline, Annto and co., Joyce Kwok and co. and of course, Terence. Susan, Ah Nee, this is going to be fun!

  82. Good morning to all lovely SHCians,

I would like to share my experience of drinking Tonic Soup / Herbal Tea and its benefits for total body wellness…….

“Tong sum” or “dang shen” is a mild herb which resembles a dry twig, the size of a finger. It is called the poor man’s ginseng in some instances because it shares similar properties with the more expensive ginseng. “Dang shen” is actually a root which benefits the spleen and lungs and is often used together with other herbs in soups.
This inexpensive herb helps to boost immunity, nourishes blood and lowers blood pressure. It is also use for promoting digestive system, especially if you have a sluggish digestion (bloating & upset stomach caused by indigestion).

Here’s a simple way of brewing this healthy Herbal Tea for daily consumption.
To simmer this Tea, you need some Red Dates (with seed or without seed also can) and some “dang shen”. Wash and put both into a pot of hot water and throw in some wolfberry. Simmer gently for 15 to 20 minutes or until you smell the aroma. Remember to drink it warm.

It has surprising results for me after drinking it for a few weeks. I find that I am less fatigue and not so prone to cold & flu than before. I have to thank Juliet Ong for recommending this healthy Tea to me and not forgetting Eyvonne Chew for bringing us to listen to this Herbal Soup cooking class. :)

  83. Hi Suzhang,

It encouraging to see the ‘3 musketeers’ doing their bit for the Silverhairs Club. Whether it fun, food or fellowship we want to join in!

So this is not the Cantonese or Hokkien clans, no password required. I seldom get to enjoy soups much less herbal soups, this will be a good opportunity to indulge in healthy living!

    Count Joy and me in.

    Dan

  84. Weiwei Dolly. I see and hear you liao. Got good food, how to miss rite?

  86. Hi Suzhang,
