September 12’09 Monthly Walk – Kembangan MRT to Bedok Jetty / Bougainvilla Garden

by Serene Low / Joyce Tan in SHC main bulletin, Walking
Date: 12 September 2009 (Saturday)
Meeting Place: Kembangan MRT control station
Start Time: 4.30pm
EOs for this walk: Serene Low and Joyce Tan

The walk from the MRT would be along the canal of Frankel Estate and St. Patrick Secondary School towards the overhead bridge that connects Marine Parade Estate to the East Coast Park Beach.

Along the beach, you will see lots of picnickers, cyclists, joggers and roller skaters; you will feel the sea breeze, the ships lining up at the horizon and the richness of green matured trees giving us shades. Further down the walk, you will reach the activities section like the Cable Ski Park, the Skateboard Park, the anglers at the jetty.  Looking towards inland, you will see the skyline of East Coast with the many condominiums, HDB flats and the city front.

We can walk a little further down to see the Bougainvillea garden with many colors of the flowers.  You may take notes on how you can grow the plant by transplant on sandy soil and cocoa pits; or if you want a multi color flowering specie, try marcotting the various species on the stems of an anchor plant which could produce the multi-color effects of the Bougainvillea plant.

Walking back towards the ‘East Coast Lagoon Food Village’ try the famous rojak, cuttlefish kangkong, satay beehoon, sambal stingray and many others.  It can be very crowded though.

There is a feeder bus 401 that can take you to Bedok Interchange.  It travels thru part of Marine Parade Road, Siglap Road, New Upper Changi Road and ends at Bedok Interchange.

Do bring along your drinking water, an umbrella (for rain or sun), repellent, sun block, camera, cap and wear comfortable walking shoes.

See you at the walk!

  1. Rosalind, signing up for tyhis Walk is a long tedious process and by the time you have signed up, you’ll have to wait for the next walk.

First, you need to do up an affidavitt…why you cant walk on yr own, why you need to walk with ah peks and ah umms, why of all walks this arduous walk which will take you thru bushes, forests with hissing snakes hiding and pissing dogs barking.

Once you’re done with the affidavit, you need to have it witnessed by a commisiioner for oaths, and the bugger so used to people swearing before him might swear back once in a while, and you might be that once in that while.

Depending on the race of the commissioner, if he’s an Indian, you need to take it to the Indian Embassy to hv it consularised, or to the Chinese Embassy if he is a Chinese.

Last, not least, you will advertise your candidacy for this walk in the ST, appearing somewhere on the last pages where farewells are normally said.

Hehe, still wanna sign up for the Walk?

But of cos, you also can barge in and this means that you need only to indicate yr interest (which you hv already done), note the time and turn up for the Walk. No sweat….till the day of the Walk.

  2. Hi newbie ‘sotong'(you called yourself)#1 RosalindLee.

I walk with nature, enjoying the greenery on an adhoc basis, meaning I do not participate every time. At our age, we choose what we want lest we may walk a walk of no return, hahaha!

Just ‘lock’ yourself in for the walk, throw the keys away and you will be confined to walk the four walls for life.
Save the trouble to register every time. Happy walking. You may walk a dog too or even an elephant!!

  3. Haha, Rosalind you like me already and I am all ready to like you.

    Can, we shall date.

Rosalind and hubby will meet my partner and me and then we exchange partners and leave in pairs. while the dames go jalan jalan together, Ros’ hubby and I will go geylang geylang. The gals will lug home shopping bags while we will hv dragon gals in tow…….and the guys will ask for more of these dates till we drop dead………….hehe.

  4. Patrick Don Juan, it is true I can go walking on my own. I walk to market almost everyday mah. As for exercise, there’s more motivation to walk when there’s company. I see so many ah peks walking alone in the parks – strolling actually. So poor thing leh. We should tarek these people to join in group walks but not those who are hobbling lah.

Tim, I say I like you because of your humour in writing. I can be funny with the written words also but in person I am ‘chicken’… Maybe meetup, we cannot click..that’s possible you know.

I’m looking forward to the walk. Is there a set timing for it to end? What I mean is – is the walk is for serious exercise to keep fit or is it for socializing? I agak agak it’s mixed lah but I find it hard to picture brisk walkers at our age gasping for breath and talking at the same time. Can meh?

  5. My dear Ros (not so long lost friend:-)

First of all, I welcome you to SHC (Sr Havoc Club)and secondly I must ‘warn’ you of TL. He is very quick on the draw (with words, of course) and, do I daresay – a ladies’ man?, yes! SHC jester and ALL-IN-ONE…everything la – multi talented. He injects a lot of humour into this forum and he is always looking for people to ‘hum tum’ on the forum (hehe, no la, only joking).

I recently saw LP giving TL a run for his money writing on the forum. His talent was hidden for quite a while and now he is running wild (with words, on the forum la).

TL and LP – pls don’t ‘bully’ my dear friend ok or else you have me to deal with….dun play play :-)

  6. Aiyoh Maggie (the ta che ta),have the handome Don Juan met you before. Or did I miss your curvaceous sexy profile ‘Ta Che'(elder sister).

Thank you for the compliments. As I had said before, I cannot hold a candle to TimL. In fact I learnt from his post to emulate his style. By nature, I am a happy go lucky guy, a grandfather of 4 months. OH! such a lovely cute angel of a granddaughter. The joy of my life.

Suddenly, “all the girls I have love before” became redundant. Now I only love my little angel. And boy! what
heartaches I inflicted on the beauties of yesteryear !! Hahaha.

Do not over protect Rose Lee, TimL and me will like to change her to Rose Chan of yonder days. For the history of Rose Chan, please refer to Wikipedia.com.

Too bad, this coming walk fall on a wednesday and I have a four day seminar to attend. Die die will miss Rose Lee
and when will we have a rendezvous for sweet old times, Maggie. RSVP.

  7. Hi EO’s, Serene Low and Joyce Tan.

This walk is on Sat the 12th right? Why does the heading read, ” September 09 Monthly walk”? It got me and I think, some others confused too e.g. Patrick Lee at #8.

It it’s on the 12th, then please include me.

    Thanks

  8. Hi Mary / Rosalind,

Thanks and welcome to the walk. Yes, as usual it’s on Saturday (12/Sept/09). Guess Serene just want to indicate the ‘Month’ in year ‘2009’ of our monthly walk.

Ros #6, just come and enjoy the walk the way you want it to be – mingle with fellow Shc’ians; soak in the surroundings or pure exercise at your comfort. You’re no older than most of us, lah.

PatL/TimL/CharlesW/MaggieT, look forward to seeing u

    Cheers,

  9. Thank you Joyce but many things have already filled my day on 12 September 2009 such as Francis’ Danz & Buffet Nite, scuba diving in a bath tub (I am serious). But if you folks will walk very very slowly and continue walking into the next day, I will catch up to join you all on Sunday…..deal?

“……in person I am ‘chicken’… Maybe meetup, we cannot click..that’s possible you know.”

Rosalind, in person I am kind of a cock (as in a blur blur nincompoop) so when a chicken meets a cockerel it’s likely they will lick not wield the stick at each other.

Think there will be a lot of fun when you & hubby meet up with Marilyn & me, with Patrick-L and Steven-C popping their eyes from their hideout to drool on Miss Singapore and back into the bushes to play ball……..

  10. Hi JoyceT

It is a joy to be walking with nature. This time round I will bring my binoculars along for obvious reason. I will not want to miss a beat. Please include me JoyceT.

Guess will be stalking Miss S’pore all the way like the paparazzi.

  11. Tim #12

I will spring a surprise by bringing a beauty from SHC to meet you and your lovey-dovey half with Rose n hubby. Perfect 3 couple and poor StevenC will be enjoying himself in the bush watching our silhouette and thinking of Rose Chan again.

  12. Ok Patrick-L, I will wait with bated breath to see who yr SHC beauty is but hopefully when it comes to the unravelling, it’s not Steven-C in disguise. While not bad looking, I cant in my wildest imagination consider him as a “beauty” no mattter how much you doll him up even tho he had seen what Rose Chan cd do and he wanna do………

  13. Please hor, don’t call me Rose! Ros is what my friends call me. My name is spelt Ros-a-lind, so no Rose there. EEEEEEKS! Can’t stand the nickname ‘Rose’, sounds like Mamasan for NighKerLub.

Again, I want to stress to all of you that I look like an Auntie so don’t expect much. How can you all expect me to look like I was more than 30 years ago? *Pengsang* Make me malu only. :(

  14. Rosalind Lee

    Hahaha.

My sister’s name is also Rosalind and she also dislikes people to shorten her name. I guess ‘Ros’ sounds better tnan ‘Rose’ but a rose is a beautiful flower. That mamasan is history, so don’t worry about that.

And don’t let people’s comments and expectations stress you out. EVERYONE ages and as long as we know how to age gracefully, why should their comments make you ‘pengsan’ and ‘malu’?

I haven’t met you yet and I’m looking forward to do so.

    Welcome. :-)

  15. Regarding the monkeys

I wonder if Terence is indirectly trying to say something?? Or has he run out of nice pictures of SHCians?

Anyway, I don’t relish the sight of seeing their private parts everytime I look at the banner. Could someone at least give them a nappy or a bikini bottom please? Hahaha.

  16. “CCLC…..Is it coming already? Hee, so exciting….very happy for you….Can’t wait for mine, haha”.

Away from this forum and thread, it’ll no doubt be some kind of dialogue from a Deep Throat type of movie……

  17. #28 Christina #32 Mary

I can attest to the excitement of waiting for the arrival of a grandbaby (especially the first) and the immense joy they bring. My 17-month old grand-daughter is simply adorable.

  18. Whoa! Nice to hear there are some grandmothers/grandfathers here. I have a 2 years 4 months old grandson and a 10 months old grand-daughter. Yes, grandchildren are such a great joy!

  23. The fame of the Lee clan dates all the way back to Senor Lee Yian who, I believe, founded the Tang Dynasty.

So for the sake of upholding this great family name, perhaps SeiLor Leepatrick shd either meditate 49 days and change to be a pious holy man or avoid seeing his g’kid too often lest she also becomes humhumsupsup then how leh?

    Hehe………….

  24. Hi WeeChin / Pauline / Lena / Paul/Peggy,

Glad to know that you’re coming, hope it won’t rain this afternnon.

    Maureen,
Noted, we’ll see Irene next time.

    Cheers,
    Serene/Joyce

  25. Hello everyone!

I want to thank all the wonderful SHC members who were at the walk on Saturday for embrasing me into the group. It takes time I know, to get to know everyone and having individuals in the group approaching me spontaneously to chit chat helped made me felt less awkward amongst strangers.

My apologies for not completing the walk as :-
    1) that was the first exercise I had for two and half years;
    2) my legs’ muscles were screaming in agony;
    3) i was still recovering from flu and that kind of sapped
    my energy

The EOs were informed prior to the start of the walk that I
would stop when I find the going tough.

All in all, it was a good walk and without the company I doubt very much I could do it alone for the distance we went. Phew!

Thank you all once again for disregarding Don Juan’s very public announcement at the Kembangan MRT Station. He would have gotten a tweak in his ears if I know him better. Hehehe

Looking forward to seeing all you nice people again.

    Rosalind

  26. #48

Thank you Ros for your graciousness and ‘big heart’.
You added colour to the walk. Thanks to SereneL and JoyceT
for a wonderful time walking with nature and all present.
I certainly had a good time!

  27. The photos on the top post (wallpaper) was taken during our monthly walk from Kembangan to East coast. A perfect picture without a balance. 17 ladies to 4 outnumbered men with the deep blue sea behind as backdrop.

If I am not wrong Conrad took the picture. Where have all the gallant men gone to ?
