Monthly cum Pre ‘Chong-Chew-Jie’ Gathering – 17 Sept’09

Hello SHCians,

For the month of September gathering, we have the honour to host it at Gillman Heights upon the kind gesture of Jacqueline Han, who make it possible by arranging the necessary logistics.  emoticon

This Gillman Heights Condo although aging in appearance (and severely need a coat of fresh paint) has wide open space with lots of matured trees and greenery. Other plus points are the "olympic length" swimming pool, and large wading pool. Also a good-size playround surrounded by greenery.  For those want to have a swim before gathering, they are most welcome to do so.  Ample parking spaces for car owners.  Though not near to any MRT but easily accessible by bus.

Jacq had even offered to provide free flow of her famous (self-proclaimed) pandan tea. It is a refreshing iced drink, freshly brewed from pandan leave and tea with sugar added. Pandan leave contains anti-oxidants, and is highly recommended to counter the effects of heatiness caused by fried stuff and spicy food. emoticon

Another factor being that come November 2009, Gillman Heights, as it is, will no longer exist. Yep, it is to be torn down, and redeveloped into something else.  So come to have look before it gone lor…emoticon

We never before had a monthly gathering at Condo’s function room but decided to give this a try, hence fellow SHCians come and support this gathering

We can have a Pre ‘Chong-Chew Jie’ celebration and I will sponsor two boxes of mooncakes to get these going but only 1 or 2 yolks kind 1 hor…  emoticon  And Terence is going to bring along another 2 boxes of mooncakes all way from Taiwan hor…

Function room is big enough host at least 60-80paxs and we can hv some light music accompany us thru’ the nite.  To make the gathering more interesting, Terence will bring along the wireless mic with amplifier set.  Anyone considering bringing along a portable DVD lar so that we can some singing emoticon

For this gathering, as we are thinking of getting mini buffet (ard $7) hence, registration is a must for better planning for food, so come and register early…

  3. Hi Dolly, Jaq,

    If there is any event I will not want to miss at SHC, it has to be the monthly gathering. Yes, I am coming for the buffet. I think I shall be returning from Taiwan, so I shall contribute two boxes of Taiwanese moon cakes to eat with Pandan tea.

    Will also bring a wireless mic with amplifier set. Gee, already feeling heavy.

    I encourage those who have retired to come early. We can swim then.

    ANee, why are you so interested to do Ballroom Waltz which is really waltzing and walking with a ball in a room. And since 17 Sep 2009 is the 2nd last day before the hades gate closes, one of its loose wires may be hiding in the ball to roll home with you. So, better to go Gillman Heights where you can be sure of more men showing than ghost hides.

    Dear All SHCians attending tis mtg, catering mini buffet is a must 4 every1 4 easy planning but if we r unable 2 meet d targeted headcount (ie 60paxs as reqd by the caterer), den, we will not go ahead wif this. But will definitely get some food dat nite n we will all share d cost evenly, ok?

    Sam aka Ah Huat told me last nite dat he will hang up some laterns to hv more ‘chong chew jie’ mood wor.

    He will also going 2 conduct 1 game n sponsor the prizes for tis game. 2nd game oso in the pipeline provided dat time is sufficient enough. We had concluded dat we will start d game ard 7.45pm assuming at least 80-90% already turned up liao. Knowing Sam, tis game will be interesting la.. ANee, u beta dun miss d fun.. ok..

  19. Frisna, if Patrick-L’s Chang Er is to wait for him at the bottom of the pool, it’s likely to be a mati CE. So more suitably, you shd bring him a white lattern in the shape of a barrel with blue wordings written on it. Dont forget hankerchiefs otherwise Mr Lee will have to use his bottom bikini to wipe his bak sai.

    Dolly, usually “chai teng mi” is played at Chong Chew Jie. Of cos the teng mi, if played, will be a Chinese-English mix as many of us are more at home with the EL. Whateveer, I do agreee with oyu that Sam will have havoc games that will send us roaring with laughter and Patrcik-L rolling into the pool with his big white lantern…….

    Today, I butt into this thread to give directions to Gillman Heights Condo. Those coming by bus:

    Gillman Heights is at the junction of Depot Road/Alexandra Road. If your bus is traveling along Alexandra Road, alight at the bus stop nearest the Depot Road junction. Watch out for the “wavy huge overhead bridge”. Walk over to Depot Road. The entrance is near the security guard house, same entrance for cars. Pedestrians seems to have “free access”, but if the guard asks you, you are attending a function at the club house.

    Buses to Alexandra Road: 51, 93, 97, 100, 166, 197.
    Buses to Depot Road: 57, 175, 195

    If your bus is traveling along Depot Road, you may alight right outside Gillman Heights Condo. Or diagonally opposite Gillman Heights (depends on which direction your bus is approaching). Don’t be shy to ask the bus driver to alert you before the stop.

    I’ve just discovered that the huge prominent signage for Gillman Heights Condo is now obscured by some renovation work in progress. So – keep your eyes peeled for the smaller signage, or watch out for the beige white buildings with strips of green…

    Sure, I will bring the amplifier set with two wireless mics. They are for SHC use. But, no DVD set. And, no worry, I will make my way day somehow, with moon cakes.

    Our group was the first group from SHC to go to Yunnan in Feb this year: Tian Soo, Charles Chua, Sekaran and Dhevi, and you. (There was another couple from outside SHC?)

    Do you want me to bring some traditional paper lanterns with candles? This should make the evening very romantic. As kids, we love it – these red, yellow and pink lanterns, and then before the night is out, we accidentally burn it.

    As adults, I remembered looking at the full moon and waiting for mermaids to walk all over the face of the moon. This monthly gathering is going to bring back good young memories. Cannot point at the moon with the first index finger, maybe with the thumb.

    Come early and enjoy the company of other SHCians. If you don’t know anyone, raise your hands plse.

  39. Sam Huat, catch no balls your Ah Beng lingo in writing but I will be there early, maybe will take a dip if there are bikini girls swimming around. Seeing Terence and Huat in the pool cannot steam up lah! So flat on the top.

    Sam, it is a common sight during every ????? to see lanterns with riddles hagning on it for folks to guess what they are. This is “Chai teng mi”.

    Try this riddle for example : what results when the god of fortune meets a china-type businessman over hokien cake?

    The mind is set thinking. God of fortune is chai sheng, a chinese bizman is a towkay and the hokiens make kway.

    So it’s chai tow kway.

    Shall we both put together smthg similar to chai teng mi. Of cos Patrick-L is of use here. Instead of writing and hanging the teng mi on lanterns, we can hang the lanterns on him and all over him. Then, make him act out what the teng mi says.

    We can be sure that that this talented Don wont disappoint as he swings his arms, gyrate his backside in a frenzy and do quick fore-aft movements of his head as if he’s possessed by Wang Sa, Yeh Feng and Michael jackson at the same time.

    Rene is right to predict that the Don’s antics will make all cheo kar peng……..and best, we pay no additional cover charge for this ????? special show.

    Your concern regarding a notice “consumption of liquor not allowed”. These notices are at the bbq pits, near the swimming pool area. Residents and guests are encouraged to abide by this rule.

    However, this notice is not posted in the function room. As such, it is “permitted”.

    The area is foresteed so Kristin if you know Monk who is married to Key, Mon, wifey of Yet and their landlord Malau Wong then chances are, you are their neighbour.

    They’re my nutties and I too can mobilise them if help is needed. Just reward them with pisang and they will be happy till pengsan.

    $7 will probably buy a plate of beehoon ($1.00), 2 drumsticks ($2.40), 2 otaks ($1.00), a stick of fishballs ($1.20) and a cup of drinks from the barrel (40 cents).

    But I suppose folks will look forward more to meeting up to celebrate this festival, food will probably come a distant second. But if I am still hungry, I can see that both Dolly and Sam have a lot of meat, succulent and sweet so give me a pit where I wd bbq them to eat and folks dont just sit & their fingers they lick but come join me for this great treat until all our teeth dropped and that saliva dripped so come come eveyone, it’s worth making this trip.

    the shopping centre not far from Gilman Hts, there’s a restaurant/cafe that provided catering, though not sure if they still do or if they are still there as I have not been there more than a year ago & normally no one around from 3-5pm,,,, perhaps you like to check it out.

    The “china 2 person try 2 out talked each other” is called siang sheng. Usually, there’s no pre-written script, just a topic with some parameters and everything else is spontaneous. To put up a good show, they need to have the chemistry, a good understanding of each other’s style, mannerism and thoughts.

    Todate, we had confirmed 71paxs attending and 84% payment collected. Kindly note that this function room can accomodate at least 70paxs with some moving space hence, we do not encourage any walk in without any registrations this time due to logistics planning and fairness to those who registered in d mini buffet. I had emphasized that payment for mini buffet is must for this gathering as mentioned in my earlier comt.

    Hence, I am closing the registration tonite at 2359hrs as I hv been going back to the caterers many tx with regards to the pax headcount – More understanding much appreciated if not I oso nid 2 take panadols like Terence liao..

Thank you Jacqueline-H for hosting a memorable evening for us, making availble the function room and facilities for our use, to you Dolly for putting in hard work to make sure food was enough, planning the games and givimng us yr cheering ah Huat who roused everyone into action. This thank you list wont be complete without extending it to all the helpers and fellow SHCians who made time to come together for this wonderful celebration.

    My antics on Rene-L seemed to work magic. With each wink and running my tongue across my lips sensuously, she piled another piece of fish on my plate. But when I tried the same with Andrew-T – the only guy food helper- he took back the small potato from my plate and said “next!”. I was happy……he is straight afterall.

    The game of stringing of armpits under sleeves was a novelty. Guys, except one, had a clear advantage because we wore nothing under out shirts, thus smoothening the passage of the string. Our team lost bcos of this topee guy. See, he not only wore long-sleeved singlets but also lacy bras under the singlets. The chillis and carrots all stucked in his cups. So we had to remove his cups and out dashed 2 tiny rats, both also wearing hats…………..We now know he is a pet lover. The next discovery is to find out what he hides under his hat.

    So, folks who didnt attend it, see what fun you had missed?

Not forgetting Jacqueline for allowing us to use the function room at her condo and her lovely pandan tea drink which was really refreshing and soothing for the throat, couldn’t resist to have more than 1 drink.

    To share with all other SHC members who did not make it that evening, SHC monthly meet is a sure cure for headaches and Eileen Lee can testify to that – she was having a terrible headache but after she turned up for the meeting, her headache was cured, hahahahaha………… Have a great weekend everyone!     We had a good turnout of 80paxs for this gathering and to this, I like to give thks to Karen for helping out in the registraton, collection of last min payment (can train 2b vry good debt collector, hahaha) n on a serious look-out with OiCheng for any gate crashers which I had to turn away 1 member as she was here wif another non-member and 2 non members away. My sincere apologies to these ppls as we need to abide by our rules and your understanding much appreciated. Hope to c u register next time.

    Some came without registration thru’ website was let in as they either hv problems with their logon IDs or forget their password, will be rectify this with Admin to help to resolve.

    Total collection is 77paxs as 1 is vegatarian and 2 were refunded as she bring in non-member n rejected.

    77paxs @ $7/pax is $539
    Total expenditure (inclusive of mini buffe) and other misc) is $532.55
    Bal of $6.45 and if there is no claim for other helpers, this amt will be kept for next gathering use.

    I will keep all docs related to this event till 30 Sept’09 end and should there be verification needed, pls ask. If not, will destroy them on Oct 1’09.
