Came across the Silver Hairs Club website entirely by chance. I feel it's a superb platform for people like myself who have spent most of our lives working or raising children, another chance to make more friends with similar interests, especially now that the children have more or less flown the coop. Am 53 years old, recently single again and looking forward to living a more fulfulling life, and taking time to smell the roses. My fiduciary consulting business is more a half-day past-time now. My days are pretty occupied with taking care of my own investments, travelling, taking walks, cooking, meeting up with family and friends for a meal/cuppa, going for massages and facials and playing with my grand-daughter.

  1. Hi Marilyn,

Any criteria for attending, foster parent, associate parent? What if I adopt a puppy?

Dan & Joy are coming with a bottle of wine!

    Dan & Joy.

  2. Ahem, the ladies will be talking about parenthood, the guys will be doing the bbq-ing and odd jobs. :p

Joy can join in the womenfolk’s group…an objective point of view is good for the topic discussed.

Marilyn, isn’t there a max pax for your bbq pit? Spillover go take care of the greenery ah? :p

    Ros

  3. Ben #1,

You’re welcome to join in the BBQ.

    Dan&Joy #2,

Don’t see any need to impose any hard & fast rule; as long as you consider yourself a parent and come with Joy, you are welcome too!

Admin – i don’t seem to have access to an EDIT feature, so kindly update the 3 additional attendees.

    Cheers,
    Marilyn

  4. Ros #3

As mentioned in my earlier comments, the BBQ pit can accommodate a maximum of 25 pax, so once this figure is reached, registration will close.

    Marilyn

  5. Hi Marilyn,
    Tks for the invite.
Nina Choo express her interest to participate but cannot lock in. (Admin can you help?)
    Do include her pls.

#10 Maybe dessert like ‘Bo bo cha cha’ if it is okay?

    Paul

  6. Hi Marilyn

    Sockie

  7. #12 Sockie

As I have mentioned to Dan, I don’t have any hard & fast rule on definition of “parent”. So long as you think the company’s going to be great, you (+camera + fruits) are most welcome to join in!

I wanted to drop Marilyn a separate email to ask her what she needs. Since you brought this up in the forum, i will ask her lor. Marilyn how? can u tell me what you need coz I don’t know what you have planned to buy. can u give me a suggestion? If not, there will be duplicates, triplicates. :-) Thanks !

by the way, Ros, what delicious thing you bringing apart from yourself huh ? :-) haha

  9. #17 Maggie Teo,

Woman, I’m bringing a fruity/nutty kind of salad and also marinated chicken wings. You can bring lamb chops, pork chops, steaks, sotongs, satay, etc. Hahahahaha YOU asked what! :p

  10. Hi one & all,

    Thanks for the superb response.

    #15 DennisH and #16 Christina

I would like to abide by the rules of the condo management and limit the group size to 25 as originally stipulated in my post.

    #17 Maggie

No need to stress yourself lah. If Ros’ suggestions are too troublesome (??), perhaps you can bring some otah?

    Marilyn

  11. Hi all!

Please do not be shocked by the way I communicate with Maggie Teo. For those of you who are unaware, I’ve known Maggie since 1986/7 when we were both younger and prettier. :p

  12. My dear Ros
Yes those were the days when u wanted to learn swimming by tying balloons to yr legs to keep afloat but I’m sure the shcians are not interested in what we did when were younger. maybe you should start a new forum on what funny and naughty things we all did when we all were younger. so let’s not take up space in the forum about food ok? we’re just going to enjoy ourselves at the BBQ.

    cheers !

  13. Maggie, you were a lousy swimming instructor! :p I can swim now although I still have a phobia about deep ends.

    Sorry Marilyn, for going off-topic.

    Ros

  14. Hi All,

If anyone is interested in karaoke or billiards before the dinner, please let me know and I will make a 2-hr booking. The pools are nice, so do feel free to come for a swim too!

    Marilyn

  15. #25 Marilyn,

Thank you for your kind offer to let us swim. I daren’t ask as I believe it is socially correct and good manners to wait for you to offer. :)

    #26 Maggie,

Woman, are you taking leave on that day? Wanna swim? No need to tie balloons on my feet liao. The pool at Marilyn’s place is shallow so I won’t be panicking. There’s always the baby pool…….:p

  16. Hi Marilyn,

is it ok to put my friends Margaret and Monica on waiting list too
I wonder it is ok for me and my friends to go for the swim and karaoke if we can’t get in for BQ due to the quota

    thanks

    christina

  17. #30 Christina

Are both your friends Margaret and Monica SHC members, and do the 3 of you fall into any one of the categories of parent/parent-in-law/grandparent?

    Marilyn

  18. Hi Marilyn

Margaret and Monica are SHC members, we are not in any of the categories of parent/parent-in-law/grandparent I’m not aware, is this mentioned?

    christina

  19. Hi Christina #32,

For participation at SHC activities, it is better to give their full names, especially if they do not register themselves. We currently have 17 Margarets and 4 Monicas.

Plse have Margaret and Monica contact admin@SilverHairsclub.com. Thank you.

    Terence Seah

  20. #32 Christina

This BBQ post is a spin-off (created by Admin) from my thread BEING A PARENT/PARENT-IN-LAW/GRANDPARENT created on 13 Jan 2010.

    Marilyn

  21. #30 Christina Pan,

If I am not wrong the invite to make use of the condo’s facilities by Marilyn is for those members attending the BBQ only. Even though I know Marilyn as a friend, I never invite myself to her home or her condo’s facilities WITHOUT her inviting me first. That, I do believe, is basic social etiquette. Please do not be offended for my speaking out.

    Have a nice weekend!
    Ros

  22. Thanks Marilyn
noted as I don’t follow all the post here

    Terrence
My friends Margaret Soo, Monica Tan and Janice Han all had spoken to you before that they had problem logging in, that’s the reason I had been signing them in on their behalf
I will tell them to email you for resetting the password again

Ros, I thought she had already invited us to swim.
I just sounded out if it is ok for me and friends to participate in the activities and not the BQ as there is a quota reached.
I hope you understand I stay in the East and can go to many of my friends’ condo pool here, not to mention some social clubs. I did it more for my friends who are all living in the North

thanks everybody for your patience and understanding

  23. Hi Marilyn Tang,

    1) I would appreciate v.much if you could get some one to stand by the back gate from 5.15 to 5.30 pm to open to those of us who need to come that way as had been done for the Dec gathering. ok?

    2) Btw, I will be bringing some homemade herbal white carrot soup which I had learnt and got a recipe from my friend in KL.

  24. #36 Christina Pan,

Yes, Marilyn invited those 25 members in her list for a swim/karaoke/billiards on the 5th Feb. You are on her waiting list so surely you would not be so presumptuous as to invite yourself? I think her non-response is as clear as daylight. Why don’t you wait for her invitation?

    Cheers
    Ros

  25. Admin,

I think some misunderstandings have arisen as a result of this new post being created without linking it to my original post of Being a Parent/Parent In-law/Grandparent.

I have taken it in good faith that those who have indicated their interest to join in this get-together session fall into any one of the categories (although there need not be any hard & fast rules as to the definition; can be god-parent of sorts too!). That said, I am quite sure that it will be perceived as offensive if I were to request for verification…

I would like to think that we are all matured adults, and bottom line is to have a fun time and enjoy each other’s company. Apologies to those who feel left out of this event.

    Marilyn

  26. Hi Marilyn, my apologies for sounding so fierce in your thread. I just cannot fathom nor visualize what it’ll be like if ALL confirmed 25 guests in your BBQ invited 3 friends each for a swim. My goodness, the total would be 75!!! If you agree to one, then you’ll have to agree to all. I think your condo management will get a huge net and fish everyone out of the pool!!! hahahaha

    Dear Dear Ros,
I shall make myself patiently very, very, clear in-case my england is that bad that you have to talk and talk so much here unnecessary…..

Firstly I was not aware that this event is meant for grandma, mother….

Secondly my request is only to put me and my friends under waitlist as some may drop out last minutes

Firstly, did I beg her subsequently to accomodate us for that desperate swim after she explained herself to the qualification to the event
Secondly we are still on waiting list Even if she is willing to oblige my request for that desperate swim, the condo can take in only 25 guests ( I would think as a courtesy to the condo owners there, it is not nice to call too big a group there)

my dear Ros can you understand the whole picture or must I repeat it again

    christina

  28. Hi Marilyn,

Pls let me know the costs to share as I won’t have time to prepare anything and will come straight from work. See you all this Friday! Thanks & regards, Lisa

  29. Hi Lisa,

As I still have not figured out what to bring, do you want to share so that will release you from the hassle of running out to buy something while at work?

Just a suggestion, so feel free to decline….hehe (If you agree, please give me some idea on what to buy hor?)

  30. LO#43 n CY#44,
    How about 20cups of Walls/Nestle/Mag Ice-Cream? …. but hor … me cannot be there leh …. full-house oredi…got waiting list some more….

  31. Hi Catherine #44,

Sorry I could not reply sooner as I was on MC 2 days. Altho not fully recovered, but will make it a point to come over and join you all. Paul has very kindly provided me the map and instructions so hope I can get there eventually. As for the sharing of food costs, I’m ok with anything. Just go ahead and buy whatever you think is nice and let me know how much to pay you back. See you all later, Rgds, Lisa

  32. Ivan #45,
Your suggestion sounds good esp. for my sore throat. Anyway, whatever the costs, just let me know and I’ll be glad to share. Thanks. Lisa

  33. LO#48,

    Ivan

  34. Hi Marilyn Tang,

Thanks so much for your kind invitation to the BBQ.

I brought along my swimming attire for standby but none of us swam. We had a wonderful time too busily chit-chatting and enjoying the delicious food brought in by SHCians.

  35. Hi Danz and Joyz ,

Danz , I thought you said you wanted to swim earlier before the BBQ begins in yr comment.

Are you waiting for the “Midnight Swim” by the romantic pool ? :)

  36. Hi Steven,

I dun remember mentioning having a dip before the BBQ. I do remember hinting having a swim before the dinner for the Westerles!

I did brought my swimming gear just in case anyone is game enough to join me for a midnight swim by the pool!

Either your memory failed here or mine?

    Dan

  37. Hi Marilyn Tang @ 50 / Catherine Yeo,

    1) Sorry forgot to mention that you were a wonderful host too . Thanks to
Paul Kong and Ben Foo for BBqing the sea food, vegetables n meat.

    2) Thanks Catherine for your kind offer to ” tompang” me to Marilyn’s home.
    Appreciated. Steven C

  38. Hi Marilyn
thanks for hosting a great BBQ last night. It was really fun with great company with all the ‘xiao’ people.

we shall do the heineken beer advertisement scenario again some time?

thanks for being a wonderful host (not hostess ok?).

cheers and have a great weekend ‘

  39. Last night’s BBQ cum gathering was so relaxing and interesting. The guys doing the bbq-ing and the ladies doing the eating….hahaha

Thanks Marilyn, you’re a generous & wonderful host. We had plenty to eat, Satay, Chicken wings, Prawns, Sotongs, Salad….and many many type of fruits. Yummy Yummy!

Not forgetting the “agenda” for this gathering is to talk about being a Parent, In-law, Ah Kong & Ah Mah……hehehe, well I have a very fruitful chat with Lisa & Nina.

Lisa is still quite worry about her son not able to find a girl friend, but should her son get married, her advice is “never never stay together under one roof” ??? ;)

Nina is more optimistic, in fact she invited all her children (2 girls & 1 boy) to come back and stayed with her. She rebuild her house and each of her married children occupied one floor. Not a bad idea, everybody have their own privacy and Nina is free to visit any floors she like. But she stressed that it’s a must to employ maids, so that all domestic & unpleasant housework issues can be avoided. :)

Hmmmm…what to do? quite a tough decision…..luckily I still have about one year to make up my mind. Stay together or not stay together???

    Ah Nee

  40. The gals was so fascinated & screamed so loudly over Marilyn’s collection in her bedroom……..

Suddenly over at the living room, the guys couldn’t resist Malcolm’s whole range of “Heineken” beer displayed on the dining table. They too yelled at their top of their voices…..

The “Heineken” beer advertisement scenario acted by us was hilarious & madness….can’t believed all the “siow siow” people like us can be so “siow”, I really enjoyed everyone’s company….Thank you guys & gals, this is real FUN! Maggie, next round, we do the “Tiger beer advertisement…. :)

    Ah Nee

  41. Wow Ah Nee#57,

You sure or not “next round, we do the Tiger beer advertisement…” bcos the next Tiger beer advert still not out yet. U might want to get in touch with VP – Advertising of Tiger beer 1st …. hahaha if not they do a “tiger-show advert” then how …… whoever the EO will be in big trouble then liao! Too many gate-crushers will be there too for the event + TV media + News Kapo-writer :))
Just kidding … lah and (Oh!!) THK U V Muc 4 D Lift to HG Ave 8.
You have a great weekends too ….. this weekend, me GD man for spouse …. have to carry all the CNY barang-barang while she just shop n shop, buy n buy n buy some-more …. kesian me!!!
    Ivan

  42. Thanks Marilyn for organizing this BBQ. Our initial worry of insufficient food was uncalled for. :p We had plenty to eat with leftovers!!!

The ladies were uninhibited in their enjoying the bbq and ‘freebies’ offered in your home. What hilarity! It’s so nice to be able to let our hair down and laugh to our hearts’ content.

The gentlemen were really helpful and this is where us women has to admit – men do have their uses. Hehehehe

Thank you one and all for your warm friendship.

    Cheers
    Ros

  43. Thanks Marilyn, you are a wonderful host, making sure we have enough food to eat & also ample drinks to go around for all… we have had a good time eating, drinking & chit-chatting…..and thank goodness, the evening was cool & nice after a short downpour earlier. :)

To the few gentlemen who was there to give a helping hand….thank you too!

Ah Nee #57, I’ve never watched The “Heineken” beer advertisement before, so is like that huh?….so funny !

  44. Hi all,

Phew, the sudden torrential downpour came and left just in the nick of time!

My thanks to all of you who came, chipped in all around and contributed to the success of the function. It was tiring, but I had a good time hosting the function too. Special appreciation to:-

    – Thomas who brought enough fruits to feed an army (the sweetest & juiciest cherries, strawberries, watermelon, guavas, jackfruit, oranges), lugged 4 bags of ice, charcoal, even plastic sheets in case the rain doesn’t stop in time, etc.,

    – Paul, Peggy, Pearl & Nina who came early to help bring down all the drinks & barang-barang to the pit, wiped all the wet chairs and tables, so everybody’s bottoms stayed dry; Paul got the fire going in no time too!

    – Ros who brought a generous supply of chicken wings and salad even though she had to babysit and bring along her grandson

    – SuZhang (who got her stomach all heated up!), Ben, Malcolm, Dan, Sockie and everyone else who manned the BBQ pit; I was running around too much, but could see that food was steadily being served

    – all who stayed back to bring back the stuff to my apartment, and then, to top it all, nearly brought down my apartment with the hilarious Heineken advert reprisals….luckily, I did not received any complaints from the neighbours!

All in all, I hope everyone had fun as was intended.

    Cheers,
    Marilyn

  45. Marilyn,

Tks for the BBQ function. On the way out, I miss Steven and his group. The gate to MRT was lock. I had to walk round your condo back to the MRT station.
Any way, an enjoyable BBQ night. Well done, Marilyn.

    DennisH

  46. Hi

Yes the guys did all the hard work and we ladies just ate and drink. We should hv more occassions like this!

Ah Nee, is the tiger beer advert where they changed from gorilla to robot to hunk etc huh?wow tough act to follow ! I have not seen a carlsberg advert for a long time. oh well I am sure u all will be creative to come up with something.

    cheers

  47. Thanks Marilyn,

My apologies for not writing earlier to thank you for you for being such a great host as I do not have access to internet at home. Sorry for leaving early as I was not feeling that well that day and many thanks for your thoughtful gesture of baking the chicken wings for me and Ah Nee instead of having the BBQd. Really appreciate your hospitality and not forgetting all those who turned up that evening – it was great catching up with you all. Before I forget, here’s wishing each and everyone, “Cong Xi Fa Cai” and hope to see everyone again after my trip back from Taiwan. Best rgds, Lisa

  48. Ivan #49,
Thanks for your offer of strepsils but I guess it won’t help as I suffered from ulcers too due to being greedy in eating the sweet potato soup that our maids cook and burned my upper jaw, thus causing a blister which later became an ulcer. Went out to the pharmacy to buy a tube of Medijel which helps in the healing.

    Ah Nee #56,
I guess we’re both in the same boat (i.e. only 1 son) so let’s learn from each other how to be the best M-I-L without putting our son in a dilemna. I do agree that Nina Choo’s idea is good and I fully agree that we should have maids to serve both the families in order to avoid any dispute etc. Well………let’s not worry too much over this matter and let nature takes it course and as the saying goes, ‘Que Sera Sera, What will be will be’. On this note, I’d like to wish each and everyone again, Happy New Year!!! See you all on the 27th Feb! Best rgds, Lisa
