Please do not give away your email address or tel number easily

As a guide, you do not need to give away your email address or telephone numbers to Event Organisers or Event Cordinators.  Large or small events can be organised successfully without having to do so.

Event Organisers or Event Cordinators are reminded not to ask for email addresses or tel numbers unless it is necessary.

Members who give away their tel numbers or email address run the risks of spams and unnecessary emails.

Ideally, you may do so if you know the organiser or the coordinator well.  If the event has started or and you are participating, the decision is yours.  With immediate effect, EOs or ECs may be asked if email collection is necessary for fellow members to join their event.

  1. In addition to what Terence has cautioned, I have this to add. Should the need of you to assist in releasing the email address or telephone number of member to another party, by courtesy please inform via email or sms to the member concerned. Ultimately the decision to release or not is best left to him or her not u.

  2. I do receive smses from unfamiliar numbers and what do i do?

I rub my hands in glee, look hard at the numbers, discrad the first which is usuaally an 8 or 9, and work thru the other numbers for a winning combination.

Luck has been fairly good to me so far………..you too can try it but you must call that number which has blessed you with fortune a few times a day, and many more times esp after midnite for those numbers which hv caused you to lose money…………

  3. To avoid spams or unwelcome messages through sms or email addresses, maybe it’s time to activate the Private Messages facility on this blog so that members can contact each other privately if the need arises.

  4. Tim-L #2, hahaha fat-hope lah! Me also got calls from “associates of SHCians” that they have a new “investment plan tailored for retireeeess only??? Hey, I told them I will still have to work even till the last day before lying down into the BOX! I told them that they can ly down there first if they want ….. and then they sort-off terminated the line ….. and some times I just put my phone down (2m away) and continue with my work and let them yak and yak (at the wall) at their own air-time expenses :)

LASTLY, SHCians of these ASS-sociates, please have some courtesy ….. you know who you are …. no offence intended.

  5. Haha, Ivan-L, so you too are a sufferer but lucky you, being my butty, you suffer no more.

When you’re next bombarded, fret not. Just transfer the call to me and you know I hv many associates who themsselves are associated all the way back to their home countries. My Bangla associates, esp Ahmed the lead-man at the yard, complains a lot and so loves to talk than work. No one ever out-lasted him in any talk.

  6. Terence, all EOs will receive emails with the email addresses of the postees who submitted comments to their threads.

To avoid exposing the email addresses to other participants in a particular activity, the EO should put his/her email address and bcc the other email addresses when sending out correspondences to the participants.

It would also help if members indicate to the EO that they want their email addresses to be private and confidential and except for the said activity, they do not wish to receive any emails unrelated to the activity they have registered for.

I used gmail and there is a button where I can allocate all unwanted mails to ‘Report Spam’ and not get any more mails from the addressee in my Inbox.

  7. In honesty, I do not mind giving (or exposing) my (free)social email address (such as yahoo, gmail, hotmail etc) to EOs or ECs or any SHCians whom we get acquainted with in the course of participating in SHC events/activities UPON REQUEST.
How else will we network with each other in the initial stage or in the least/no cost manner? Or liase with the interest group in a broad sense and timely manner? We should not make “life-difficult” for the EOs, ECs or other SHCians orgainising all these events etc etc…..
However, conveniently “mis-appropriating” our PRIVATE telephone/mobile numbers are not acceptable to me …… because it is a pain in the butt due to Biz Opportunity Cost for not answering that (damned) call ……
Just my 20cents worth of inputs/feedbacks/comments.

  8. WELL SAID IVAN….I welcome ANY email or SMS and I enjoy the freedom to open, read, reply or simply delete without reading. At our age now, it is a shame if we have to be told what to do and what not. A primary school chid needs to be cautioned perhaps. I believe we have seen enough come what may and should be teaching our grandchildren instead. With or without SHC “contributions”, SPAMS come anyway. Besides there are many ways to block unwanted email and sms.
    Happy networking all.

  9. #8 Daniel Chan,

I beg to differ. I see Terence’s post as his right as the founder of this Club to alert us in giving out our email addresses and phone numbers as there is a strong possibility of them being circulated to all and sundry. Perhaps for the male members it is no big deal but for the ladies, I believe they do not want to receive emails or phone calls/smses from members they hardly know or can recall. It’s not just the young who are mischevious. Playing pranks are not segregated to the past-time of some youths.

    Chill…

  10. YES Rosalind, I do agree with you on the frustrations expected when your email address and phone numbers fall on to the wrong hands. The onus however, is for you to be careful. There will come a time when you have no choice but to give, to a SHC member or beyond.

I appreciate Terrence’s goodwill and his efforts to protect his broods, some of which are apparently vulnerable. But I find this line rather amusing and impractical, quote “Event Organisers or Event Cordinators are reminded not to ask for email addresses or tel numbers unless it is necessary.” unquote.

I believe SHC is the first club to highlight such a ruling. How to ensure that this measure is effective? It only makes the EO and EC’s job difficult as he or she tiptoes on the fine line of “breaking the rule”.

This reminds me of the recent MacDonald saga, where the piggy toy was removed from the 12 Chinese zodia animals. This is a classical case of self censorship where a pre-emptive measure serves to inconvenience the silent majority for the sake of “protecting” the vociferous minority.

We don’t have to resort to that. Don’t tell any of your personal particulars if you don’t want to. But people can ask, can’t they?

  11. Hi friendly members,

Sometimes, members write to me to request for another member’s contact on some emergency requirement. I have to apologise that I would not give away any members’ contact telephone or email address.

Please treat this as another reminder, in case, you do not get a response from me.

Should you need to contact someone, please make use of this forum. The best way is to look for that members’ Post, and make you request there.

I am sooooo happy that you take PRIVACY religiously……………what ‘friendly’?????!!!!! Don’t be shy to flip the finger (my thing) Some are just pulling a fast one, whatever. Yes, some simply need to get in touch on an emergency basis.

Point is, you seemed (in the past) to encourage some cheap, whatever ‘service’ to this club and THAT absolutely does not sit well with me as I am always respectful of everyone’s PRIVACY.

Great that you do not respond to these and remind members to post it HERE…….the way it should be.
