Gathering at Hans Cafe

Hi Terence,
I agreed with Charles that we might able to make use of Han Cafe for our
next meeting judging from the increased size of attendees every meeting.

We might hv to consider another location instead, maybe try finding a
function room in Community Centres and pay a minimal amt for usage.  It
would be better that Silverhairs club start collecting minimal charges from
members turning for meeting so that this amount can roll over for the next
meeting of which I am sure most of the member would mind paying.

There were lots of new members present in our first weekend Silverhairs
meeting but as what I shared Yew Kwong, some groups might prefer to stick to their own group.

As I was chatting with some of new members, below are some of the activities
that they would like Silverhairs to organize apart from brisk walking and
cycling.

1) Fishing
2) Karaoke
3) mahjong
4) back-packed Europe holidays
5) Line dancing
6) Batam/Bintan holidays
7) Many mores which I cant recalled right now and the list right nw at my
office table as I intend to post in the forum but unfortunately was delayed
due to work constraints but I will post those that I left out here later…….

Terence, maybe you can help to post them in the Forum so that other members
interested can group together for these activites….

But as Yew Kwong, we can start to organize these activities but helpers are
definitely a must to ensure that activities would be successful.

Nevertheless, it is a good sign to see many new members coming forward to
join the Silverhairs club.

  1. Dolly,

The 1st weekend gathering was a great success. I spoke with the Hans cafe manager, after the event, and he told me he was surprised at the larger than expected group. He counted 75 people. We can try to use this place again, but the Hans management has written to me that he wanted to charge $350 for that corner that we use. I dont think the charge is reasonable. We will have to look for another place. Again, recommendations for place are always welcome.

As for the monthly gathering, I would still prefer that it be of no charge to members. This is to ensure we cater to a “as wide as possible a crowd”. Members continue to buy the drinks as they see fit.

For forum, we encourage members to post themselves, but there are difficulties for some. We will have to see how to manage this.

The crowd is growing, and we have to look at how to manage this good problem.

  2. Hi Dolly,

Hans Cafe at China Square is an excellent place, because of its size and good spread of drinks and food.

However, they have recently written to me to say they will charge $350 for that corner that we use on the Saturday. I am dis-inclined to accept this arrangement. I have responded, and I hope to have a positive response from them.

We had another offer of Faven place at the Singapore Poly, but there was resounding comments that the place is out of the way of public transport. Let’s keep trying.

  3. I guess if we have to eventually, we can gather under the “bridge” near the Waterfront promenade besides the “Durian”. Everyone will bring their own drinks and we can chat the whole night long. Thereafter we can adjorn to nearby for dinner to continue our chat. If we are still not finish, we can continue it until supper time. With such arrangement, I’m definitely sure that we can solve our biggest woe.

  4. Please take note that gathering at public places need to apply for police permission especially we have such a huge crowd to congregate.

Though our motto is clearly stated that there shall be no sex, racial discrepencies, MLM and Direct Sellings involve, the law still need to be observed by the organiser.

I would suggest that we congregate in either community centres or private condominiums or private residentials which will be more appropriate for conducting monthly agendas.

  5. On Patrick’s note, I do agree we should keep within the laws of large gatherings.

So far, we have no offers of gatherings at private condominiums.

Perhaps, we should keep our gatherings small. For weekday convenience of most people, so far, we have considered places that are quiet, especially non-peak periods. Near to MRT and public transport. Some coffee or tea is available of the counter. Food is not a pre-requisite. Lasting usually two hours. We need to keep trying for places that do not charge us for the use of the place. Unfortunately, the conditions are not easy to meet.

For weekend convenience, if there are places in Jurong, Choa Chu Kang, Yio Chu Kang, Ponggol, we should consider. Let’s keep the ideas flowing.

  6. Guess one of the good alternatives is “Going Online” to meet each other. We dont need to apply for permit, can sit comfortably at home and toy with your computer and chat the whole night long. Other than this, members can meet each other in the respective groups that run the activities which they are interested in. Last but not least, communicating through emails will update us of new happenings.
