“Party services” for the young and old – maybe another idea

Now, back to my cranky thoughts.  We have discussed a number of ideas, something for our retirement days.  In line with the Blue Helmet concept, I am beginning to think that some of us can gather together to provide party services to the public – young and old.  Something which I think we can do, even if we are over 45.

Singapore has a bigger population of high-end PRs and new citizens.  Maybe more kids, more need to meet with fellow Singaporeans.  Maybe more generous and open to kids parties.  Singaporean families may be looking forward to bringing their kids friends together; and of course in a more relaxed mood.  Maybe as a business, we can provide party services to them.

Then, there is the older generation in Singapore.  I guess parties would be good.  Not simply cooked food in the house.  Maybe parties, at home or somewhere in a untouch spot in Singapore.  Maybe, kids are looking at more than just going to a restaurant.  A birthday party, an anniversary or even a family gathering.  A different father’s day or even a celebration for good school results.

I dont have all the ideas and plans; but I guess for those who are interested, we can get together.  Of course, some would like to be party organisers.  Alot of work; but I think this is something suitable for the over 45s who are looking for some work, hopefully exciting and rewarding.

Broadly, I would think this party services would take in some SHCians in different roles.

If you are interested, please drop a comment here, saying what you would be interested in.  Please do not email or sms me, as I prefer ideas to be shared.

  1. Terence,
I like your idea but someone has to champion this ‘business’ and it has to be someone who’s currently not working and has the time to plan, organise and keep track of events and allocation of resources etc.

One thing I could think of is food which quite a few members are good at or has good recipes e.g. making cookies, cakes etc. to sell during festive seasons and slowly building up SHC’s signature food items where we can cater for functions, company events, etc. Thru this excercise, members can do something that’s of interest to them not to mention building camaraderie for members while having some source of income too. Just sharing my thoughts. Rgds, Lisa

  2. Hi Terence,

An interesting business proposition. My suggestion is not to restrict the business to “party services” only but to include other services as well. In short – a kind of “service provider” agency where people request for a specific service and the agency looks for the service provider.

Let’s get together and talk business……..lol! but seriously :)

  3. I have been staring into ling boxes recently, the last was 2 nites ago when O bowed at the wrong mand and almost signed the condolence book of someone I had not got to know when he was alive and will forever never now that he’s dead.

Yes, there were 2 funeral services conducted in 2 void decks next to each other on the same nite. Any donation made in error or not will probably not receoverable unless someone wth a similar experience tells me that he got a refund……….

So, this is one service to look at and the potential hinterland can only grow, hehee……

    ????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????????????

  4. What we are looking at is probably a limited company offering “event organization”. We will need to decide on the niche market. Some years ago, I happened to engage an event organizer for a company family day. Looking at their operating model, I believe this can be undertaken by part or full time silverhairs. Basically, requires good organization skills, good contacts on service providers, plenty of part time help on the actual day itself. Worth exploring.

  5. Hi Jassmine, Lisa and Conrad,

I am glad to hear your positive outlook on such party services. Besides some of us seeing opportunities in this segment of services in Singapore, I also believe it will be a great opportunity for some SilverHairs (fulltime or part-time) to participate.

Kind of think the business can be fun and rewarding. Yes, experience in event organisation, knowing who can provide what and at what price, plus importantly corporate contacts.

I shall keep this post open and likely hold a meeting around National Day. Got to celebrate too.

  6. Hi Terence Chief or ”daddy” kekeke, just joking hehe.
Thumbs-up to you, always looking at ways n means to help out fellow SHCians with various projects. Salute!!

  7. An eye opener indeed. Very interesting but agreed with Jassmine, this kind of businesses shd have more option in our services from food to party, etc etc.. Cheers.. Dolly

  8. Calling members who would like to participate in Party Services. If you have experience running party services, have contacts with forward looking corporations and shopping malls, I would like to invite you for a discussion on Tues, Aug 3 at 1500 hrs at Caffe Brastilava. Session will be two hours. Lisa, Jassmine, Dolly and Conrad, if you can make it to the meeting, great.

If you are busy and unable to attend, do drop a note here, and we can meet another day.

The objective is to brainstorm the key services that can be offered, and the different market opportunities. Ideally, Party Services should aim to employ the services of SHCians. At this stage, we wont go into investors discussion.

  15. Terence, seems to me that you’re not an astute bizman and cant sniff out a good deal which you can find in the long box biz.

Let me ask you : 200 years ago, wd you be able to sight maiden thighs other than those of the one married to you?

Today, toddlers run abt panting but pantless. Adults choose the most skimpy of bikinis to show more than legs, thighs and grissly hair, and so explains why the adult theory of adultery looms large.

Today, the decreed proper display or manifestation of filial piety/love is to cry like no tomorrow. But think again and think more honestly. And dont you think many old farts deserve to be long gone long ago, having outlived their shelf lives for decades?

For the truly loved ones who hv lived to their ripe old age, wdnt the old fella lying inside the box like to hear some rock music, laughter and yumsengs, smthg he wd like to join in if he cd climb out? Spare him the chantings which was a nuisance to him when he was alive and has no reason to change his mind when he is deade.

Revolutionalise the death industry. Change the band. Kick the dong dong chinag man out. bring on Elvis, John Travolta dn reunite with michael Jackson. Give him a rousing send-off ! And you’ll be remembered forever for that, more remembered than we do for KarL Marx.

  16. Hi Tim,

I remembered two years ago, I took a cable car ride up Genting Highlands. Everybody around me enjoyed the scenaries with their eyes wide opened. For me, I didnt like it; I preferred to close my eyes all the way to the top. I guess I dont like heights.

There are other stuffs I dont quite enjoy. Dont like late movies, you know the ghostly and ghastly types. These shows come alive around midnight. Again, I have to close one eye. Well, the other eye can still see.

It’s good to see you have come alive again. I like your adventurous thoughts. Sleep well.

  17. Hi Terence,
I’ll try to be there today, if not, will see you on the 5th. Can you pls provide the actual address again as I need to input that to my GPS, otherwise don’t know how to get there. Thanks, Lisa

  18. Haha, Terence, so you’re one incorrigible guy who likes to close his eyes, stealing peeps in btwn sleep. That can be arranged – I’ll ensure it – when it comes.

Yes, I slep well last nite – had a good day earlier – and slept with both eyes close but saw you run all over town, covering connaught drive, shenton way, u-turned into robinson rd and finally found refuge in the Bra. I finished the game for you by chasing away that ghastky ghost, reversing the route it chased you.

Lisa-O, the Bra is in MPH bookstore. I you come in the direction of raffles place -> shenton way, keep a look-out for the SGX Centre. At its end is an overhead bridge where you shd make a right turn. The MPH is abt 20 m away, on the right.

If you come the direction of anson rd -> robinson rd, MPH is on the right at the next junction after the maxwell-robinson rd junction.

Parking inm town is quite expensive but if you drive the all green inflatable car then there’s no worry. Terence and i will blow the car back to shape for you, heheee……

  19. Hi Terence,

I just saw your note, and just noticed that you’re having a meeting at Caffe Brastilava in one hour’s time! I would like to attend, but don’t think my schedule allows it today. Would you consider having a meeting on 10th August, evening, at one corner table. I think more members will be able to attend. I am keen on this “party services” idea. Most important, we need to brainstorm on how to advertise. Can we go on-line to advertise?

    Cheers, Lydia.

  20. I used to love organizing events for the singles such as BQ,house party, badminton, tennis etc back then in 1994 to 1996 (group size about 50+)…good in logistics planning … never lose money, break even or up a little as it was suppose to be non-profit…
If time permit, wouldn’t mind to lend a hand ….if it is business… I love to make money, lah …was also freelancing in service provider as consultant in my line for 10 years..

can consider if can fit in… will look out for more development from here

  21. Hi Tim #23, Many thanks for the the direction to Bra. Sorry I couldn’t make it yesterday due to last minute meeting so have decided to come this Thurs instead. Will definitely consider the inflatable car suggested or maybe the MRT/taxi whatever. See you there if you’re going. Rgds, Lisa

  22. A summary of yesterday’s meeting on Party services. SHC has many talents with event organsing skills. This is a good start, although very few names have surfaced.

Requests for party services that come through, will be assigned to different party organisers. As these events are very individual and needs to be customised, the party organiser can do the planning, taking into consideration labour, items, time, and cost. Our target will ikely be high end events.

Another similar meeting will be held on Thurs 5th Aug.

  23. Hi Terence,

I am keen in this idea, possibly even for a business venture. Would try my best to come over to The Bra @ 3pm today. Can only stay half hour though. Hope that is sufficient? We can then correspond via email, or discuss in greater details on 10th August @ Hans.

    Lydia.

  24. “I am keen in this idea…..Would try my best to come over ….. Can only stay half hour though. Hope that is sufficient?”

    Definitely enough.

The last chat 2 days ago ended with Terence’s eyes, none closed but both wide open like bullock cart wheels, obviously excited with my suggestion of the long box biz. What appeared to impede this as a straight-money biz was : where to find that important person with a size that fits all, to make the box to precision?

So it’s really nice to read that you’re keen “in this idea”. 1/2 hour is enough to take all the measurrements he wants, with time left to sip his special tonic soup brewed for National Day 2010.

  25. Lydia, Look forward to see you.

Tim, I see you are an expert in dealing with boxes. Do go ahead with this business idea.

For those who may be wondering what Tim is talking about, he is talking about the services that one requires when one pass away.

  26. Today, we had YatSing, TimL, Lydia Chin and Jassmine to brainstorm the idea of providing party services. Here are the suggested new directions. The meeting focuses on ideas, service providers and market opportunities.

    1. There is general acceptance that party services is viable; although there is competition from existing event organsiers.

    2. SHC has a number of guys and gals with years of experience in planning and organising events. Some feeling that we should not restrict to party services only. The intended entity can be the center to receive “service requests”. Selected EOs or event organisers can then look at the service brief, work out the plan & cost, to kick off the requested service.

Service requests will come from the public, corporations and individuals; intended to run as a business; and that party organisers and event planners will be paid based on competitive rates, and based on supply and demand.

Feel free to run your thoughts here, if you are interested in being a service provider.

  27. I can only confirm that I was there getting Terence to invest in the farewell parlour services but he was only willing to part with $1,000 which will tong one chiang. Tong tong choang will cost him $2,000 in funding. Obviously, he sees more value in $2k and has so ahred with all in #32.

Since I was busy figuring out Lydia’s 20 karate chops to break an everthing ice = icebergs, ice-cubes, ice cream – I cant say I am part of those ideas thrown up. But I am dead certain that the dead do not want to go in tears, or want others to shed tears when they go. So, there’s potential in the biz of making the sojourn home memorable and fun.

  28. So today’s Sunday Times have produced enough in the clamour for the funeral service to be given glamour. Will send my invite to Ronnie-S, Dan-H, Janet-C, Peng2 etc when I find the capital for a start-up……..Terence’s promised $1k and his cameo appearnce in a dracula shirt wont take me very far.

Death aside, much of life await us tonite as our fearless cubs take on Haiti in the YOG soccer semi final. Despite a 9-0 drubbing Haiti had in the hands (or legs) of Bolivia, the result will be close.

Altho big name European and Latin American teams (even Japan and Korea) are absent, it’s still a semi final of an Olympics event. The standard may be lacking but the enthusiasm and fighting spirit of our young men will be on show, going by their trailing the Montenegroes but still emerge victorious in the last match.

Not since the Kim Song, Tien Jit, Chiew Peng and Teng Sai days do we see so many Chinese players in the team. Except maybe 1 or 2, the team comrpises proud Sporeans, born & bred kaki lang (????? Die die also must watch.

    ??????????

  29. For those who have some experience in organising events and parties, or have party contacts, please do email me. I like to proceed on with the next stage. High degree of independence expected. Preferably you are not working now or have some available time in evenings or weekends.

  30. Jassmine, yes, a pianist would be great entertainment at parties. I take note.

Meantime, I have been thinking what SilverHairs can do when they retire. Some years ago, I bought a big book entitled “The magic book”. It shows step by step 150 magic tricks. Had been planning to learn the tricks, but my mind keeps wavering and therefore could not hesitate.

Now, it is time to really get serious. Are you any magicians among fellow SilverHairs. A friend of mine told me that magicians at parties get $200/hour. I think this is not a bad rate. Kids and adults just love magic.

Anyone? got to get serious on party services, a great way to entertain and be paid for it.
