  1. Hi Steven Ng

We are planning one in Sep to put up a nite at a resort. Details are not finalised only and after a recce is done. Do keep a look out.

  2. Oops…. see Steven Ng as no. 12 but with Janet before me, then I’ll be no. 14 on wait-list, please….. If I get to go, I would need rental bike, helmet maybe use son’s. Thank u!

Hope can come back in time for wedding dinner on same day too.

  3. Hi Yew Kwong,

Please register me for this Pengarang cycling trip.

I will need to rent a bike only from Changi.

Thanks for organising this Pengarang cycling again.

  4. Hi YK,

ArhhhMmmmm, no need helmet for me – using my Sun-hat is good enough, only need renting a bike.

    Yeee!Ho!Ho!…..sounds like a happy nickname.

Btw, those who wish to use/bring own “FOLDABLE” Bikes. If it is those with Wheels of Small Sizes like 14-16inches in diameter…. do note that the total distance (to n fro) is 34KM …. that’s going to be a lot of paddling if the wheels are small ……. so just be aware ……. we dun want to be back to Changi Ferry Terminal Point and then found that some poor guy/gal is still paddling ferociously somewhere in the scenic countryside of Pengarang … Hahahhahaha —- just joking/kidding lah! Can or not!!! :)))

  5. Hi Yew Kwong,

I’ve NEVER cycled 34 clips at a go, but AM GAME TO TRY.I
need to rent both bike and helmet.
Please throw in some USEFUL advice to newbies to help us prepare for the trip – eg best type of (protective)clothing to wear, any warm up exercises to do days before to prevent over strain? What kind of bag to use/pack and how do we pay up? Got back up car following us or not? :)

  6. Ivan

U are starting to frighten off the foldables. Foldables also come in big wheels of 26 inches. In fact the high end ones allow u to pedal more but using less strength much to your surprise even on smaller wheels. Prices are also expensive. They can go as fast as 30+ kmph on flat road.

Advantage is that u can carry it around easily and also on public transport. It’s a good investment in the long run.

  7. Hi Yew Kwong,

We (my wife, Catherine & I) are game for it. Please register for both of us. We need to rent 2 bikes (fyi, we are newbies too, hehehe!!!)

    Thanks & Regards
    Alex

  8. Yew Kwong, Thank you for enlightening Ivan on the foldables.
My foldable is dahon Speed T Pro, a 20″ wheel road bike. My average speed is 25 kmph and above. I dont have very good stamina and it helps to have a powerful bike.
I had cycled to Penggarang before with a group of 6 very experienced serious cyclists. Instead of meeting at Changi Ferry Terminal to begin the trip, we started from carpark F at ECP which is 17 km from changi village. On the return we cycled back to carpark F. So it is 34 km longer than the distance we will be covering.
Unlike our trip with stops along the way to visit the ostrich farm and chinese temple, the group I joined sped all the way to sg renggit for the seafood then sped back to jetty.
I am not a newbie, having joined 40 to 50 km cycling events to overcome fear of riding on roads in singapore.

  9. Hi YK,
“frighten off the foldables” – No lah! Jus wan 2 highlight a small issue about small wheels for out-of-country paddling. And ya, thanks for “ENLIGHTENING” us that foldables have “BERSAR” wheels too …….

    Hi Audrey-C,
Glad to know that you have done this route before. Me? have never been to Pengarang and me, only social/leisure cycling – wouldn’t know the difference betw a dahon n a trouper, dun care either …….

Have a gre8 weekend everyone! Certainly looking 4ward 2 this cycling trip and the fun we will be having ……

  10. Audrey

Yours is quite expensive. Glad u had decided to invest in it. No regrets. U will enjoy it throughout.

Last year I brought the same number of people to Sungei Rengit in Sep. I included visit to Chinese temple and Ostrich farm in its itinerary. We left at 7 a.m and only 3 persons need to rent bikes. The rest had their own. This time,I push back the departure time to 8.30 a.m. instead to cater to those who cant make it early.

Since I took up serious cycling one year and seven months ago, I had rode to places which I wouldnt have known and explored. My memorable start as a new cyclist always reminds me, I should bring people to see the beautiful outside world on 2 wheels.

For those who are keen to see more on 2 wheels, u need to train and build up cycling skills like endurance, speed, good knowledge of road safety and bike handling.

  11. Hi Mabel at message 23,

I participate in Yew Kwong last year trip to Sungei Rengit – I was one of the three people who need to rent bikes and helmet.

I do not think you will need to prepare yourself specially for the trip especially when an old uncle like me who is not so healthy and inflicted with hypertension and high blood cholestrol can make it last year without any training or exercises. There is no special clothing or bag you need to pack – it’s just a normal recreational cycling albeit slightly longer.

  12. Hi Mabel

From experience, one who have not been sitting long on the saddle, usually suffer some butt pain. To overcome this, do some rides from now until that day. Be it 30 min or maybe an hour, u need to get used to it.

Clothing wise, wear bright color and light clothing like tee (not cotton type but those which allow your sweat to dry up fast on the go). Good if u can get yourself a cycling jersey with 3 pockets at the rear to keep your much needed stuff otherwise bring along a small drawstring bag will do.

Warm up exercise, this video may help.
    http://www.cyclingforfun.co.uk/video-cycling-warm-up-exercise.html

In the ride last year, both Steven Ng & Steven Chan did great.

  13. Hi Yew Kwong,
You said “No Regrets.” exactly what the bike shop staff said to me when I couldnt decide between this bike and another 8 months ago.

Before this bike, I cycled on big mountain bikes and only on park connectors and the furthest I dare ventured to was along ulu pandan pcn to the lakeside garden.

With the foldable bike being able to be transported on trains and taxis, I began to venture further from my house and discovered the joy of cycling for leisure, exercise and as transportation to “..places which I wouldnt have known and explored…” according to YK.

The Nat Pk is doing a great job in landscaping the new and up and coming pcns. Lovely for leisure and slow pace cycling.

Last Saturday morning, the weather was lovely. I rode the pcns from ecp car park F2 to changi village, then to pasir ris, tampines, bedok and back to ecp. It was a relaxing ride and my first.

Hope Yew Kwong will organise a sightseeing trip on a bike be it in singapore along the pcns or overseas.

  14. Mabel,
In addition to what YK has advised, here is a checklist u could use as reference to what I pack or wear: a towel, a light rain coat (from $2/-Daiso shop), UV protection arm sleeves (my jerseys are short sleeves), a black pair of cyclig shorts worn over a matching above ankle fitting pants or a 3/4 yoga pants – serves as sunblock for the legs.

If you are quite sure you will be taking up cycling again, why not get the helmet first. Else bring a scarf, a thin cap or a skull cap to put on before you put on the rented helment which could be infested with dandruffs or lice hahaha….

The road has no traffic lights and it is a rather quiet road.

Yee ho ho!! looking fw to meet this fun group of active shcs.

  15. Hi YK,
I hope the rental bikes in Changi are not LKK(Lau Kok Kok)like the ones in ECP. 2 weeks ago I rented a bike and rode for 2 hours from McDonald’s up to the sailing Club and back down to Big Splash – the aftermath … like you described – Butt Ache! For Pengarrang’s 34 clips and 5 hours – Must buy padded shorts, huh? Dun want to develope “bike saddle calluses” leh. ewwwwe :).
Yep, had seen Audrey’s Dahon. We’d dubbed “her” FANCY. She’s mango yellow, but not at all cowardly. Heard she’s a light weight at only 5 kilos but really fierce on the road!

  16. HI Mabel ,

    Not to worry . :)
The rental bikes at Changi Point is almost brand new.
I had rented so far 2x for cycling from Pengarang to Sungei Ringgit and or Desaru.

NO complaints whatsoever. If you afraid that your fragile butt might hurt ,bring along a small pillow and place it on top of the seat of the bike. Extra cushioning guaranteed. Then you can pedal in peace.

  17. Paul @ #34

All the information is readily available in the post.

    Mabel @ #35

The bikes from the shop at Changi are supposedly good compared to those at Pengarang. As I have always indicated it will be good and most comfortable if u are using your own and personal one. Perhaps u can start looking around now but buy it after the trip.

  18. Steven chan’s advice to Mabel to use a small pillow to improvise as cushion really tickles me. If Mabel follow up, I will be tickled from beginning to end, occasionally seeing the pillow sliding off that ultimately becomes flat as a pancake.
Steven, the ride to desaru must be very tough. How long did u take to arrive desaru?
Mabel is the culprit for naming my bike “fancy” leading me to fantasize it has mood swings and behaviourial problems. Mabel has got Fancy’s wt wrong. It was already 7.5 kg at birth. After some “dressing” up, with the shoes being the heaviest, it shd weigh more than 8 kg. David’s diy bike all dressed up is much lighter than Fancy at around 7 kg if I remember correctly.

  21. Hi cyclists,

For those of you who would like to join me for early breakfast at Changi Terminal market , I will be there from 7.00 am onwards.

Hope that the popular nasi lemak stall is opened too.

  22. Steven-C #45,

Will join you for breakfast but I dun think the Nasi Lemak stall will be open …. too early for sure.

And if you thinking of the Malay Stalls Nasi Lemak / Roti Brata ….. then 7am, we are too late … sun already risen … Hello!!! Ah-Bang, fasting month lah!!! Ark-Pa-Ma-Chiam!!!

    LAST REMINDER!!
All Cyclists – whatever it is; remember to bring PASSPORT!! Other thing like underwears, socks, g-strings, gold-bars, amulets, all these can forget to bring……. but no bring passport – sigh..sigh..sigh.. YOU HAVE TO ASK THE SKY, u know the taiwan hokkien drama show? Wan-Mein-Tea! After that we have to say bye-bye to u at the changi village jetty bcos you have to go home……..ok!?
….plus/and/but you still have to pay EO SGD24-00….. for the ferry…..

  23. Hi ivan Lim,

Thanks for joining for b.fast . We can eat other food if nasi lemak is not available. Ya lah aku lupa Pausa month leh.

    Hi Anna Sweet ,
Although it might rain cats n dogs, all of us are well-equipped with our ponchos. As a newbie, pls. ensure you go to the comprehensive checklist given out by our experienced EO , Yew Kwong.

If you were to follow strictly, you would have no problems whatsoever. However, if it really rains hard, then it is better for all of us to cycle slower as the road might be a bit slippery.

Looking 4ward to the F1 cyclathrone.

  24. Hi Yew Kwong,

Many Thanks for exercising a lot of care in safety and guiding we, cyclists along the country side road .

Most important of all , everyone reach Spore safe and sound. :)
