Celebrating Singapore’s 2010 National Day

Very soon, we will be celebrating Singapore National Day 2010.  For many of us, we have lived on this island for more than 45 years.  We have grown, and so have our children, siblings, friends and relatives.  As we get older, we develop fond memories of the old Singapore.  We have also learnt to love Singapore.

I have picked an old National Day song and movie clip to show on our website banner, and I hope you enjoy it.  Feel free to say or sing your thoughts on Singapore.

  1. ‘Stand Up For Singapore’ is not really that old, Terence. :p

If I were to reflect on the early days in the 60’s, I can recall the racial riots most vividly. When Singapore became independent and the PAP was then led by Lee Kuan Yew, I saw the transition of a once-chaotic nation transformed.

45 years of independence. What can I say? The first 20 years were definitely better years. Struggling years for our parents but for us Baby Boomers, they were the years when we got to ‘grow’ with Singapore.

    Happy Birthday Singapore!

  2. Dear Terence

I’m not born nor raised in spore but when i became a citizen about 8 yrs ago, i was so happy and sent mails to my local friends. but their reaction? not many congratulated me and some kind of say “are you nuts or what?”

well, i must say i’m VERY proud to be a singaporean and have contributed my services to this country by being a grassroot leader and volunteering in several organisations (1 of them is the current YOG)

when i first attended the NDP, i cried when listening to “Mari Kita”….(though i didn’t know how to sing)and looking at the men in white esp the distinguished/charasmatic MM Lee, I feel so proud to be singaporean. do you?

    Forward Singapura!!

  3. Frisna, you lead people to cut grass and so deprive earthworms and centipedes, millipedes of sleep. You cry when people sing Mari Kita and you’re proud of an old man who falls far behind Terence in good looks or match Sam Huat in physique. If yr friends dont call you a nut then what?

YOG? More like a COG……….seems to me that we’re putting our children to a stiff test. Ok, get ready yr hankies to wipe the children’s tears if they start to cry. I can foresee that there will be a lot of crying which will hv nothing to do with Mari Kita or one strumming like a mad guitar.

  4. This year, we have an extended weekend because of National Day. If you have a greeting for Singapore or something to share, please go ahead.

Some members are joining Boonliang on a Kelong fishing trip to an island off Mersing. I am going so I know how I shall enjoy this weekend.

But what about you? What are you doing? Also sneaking out to Bandung or Kuala Lumpur. Or to the casinos. Go out and get some sunlight. There is a lot to do to feel young and look good. Of course, dont just eat or drink, lah.

    Have fun this weekend.

  5. Yes, Frisna, they used to run and let boats wait there but no more since the linkbridge was completed. I frisk there on my legs. It’s a laugh to pack & go to sentosa for some kiddy rides but if you surprise me bcos you do that, then I wont laugh.

  6. I am glad to be in Singapore this National Day. For many of us, the Singapore National Days bring back fond memories. I wish all SilverHairs many good years ahead of National Days.

    Enjoy the day.

  7. Many other locations are celebrating National Day simultaneously so there’s no need to rush down to the Padang to soak up the mood.

A NDay trivia : do you know the brother-team serving in the Govt of Spore, one as a minister and the other, a permanent secretary? Believe they are the first…………..dont think Lee Y Suan and Lee Y Seng serving together a decade ago, are related by kinship.

  8. Today you’re 45! Yeah! :)
    You’ve come a long way;
    A little red dot,
    By neighbours mocked,
Surviving nicely in the global economy,
    Fortunate are we!

In the first world league now,
    The government deserves a bow.
    A debt of gratitude i owe you;
    My loyalty pledge i renew.
    Viva la Singapore! :)
5 stars rising for evermore! :)

  9. This is HOME surely
Where my dreams wait for me
This is where I wont be alone
For this is where I know I’m …..HOME. Thank You Ah Kit!!

Hope fellow SHCians enjoyed last night’s National day parade!!.

  10. Singapore has another reason to celebrate 2nite when she beat Montenegro 3-2 in YOG soccer.

Physically out-sized, the young cubs showed enormous courage, character and resolve, unlike the senior lions who usually play like lame ducks when playing ??????.

    ????????

Whatever, these young men hv done us proud just like Rayner did in the pool yesterday. And yes, they hv every right to blow the vuvuzelas…………

  11. 2 goals were scored and 1 team won.

Much to the angst and anguish of Spore, our cubs were beaten 2-0 by the Haitians and thus cut short her ND celebrations.

Before the match, almost everyone thought that a SG win was a foregone conclusion; the play was mere ceremonial and perfunctory.

Well, the cubs missed 2 free-headers in the 1st halfand that sealed their fate. The Haitians took 1 tentative shot at goal in the first half and only the goalie knew why he didnt catch the ball but pushed it onto the rushing head of a Haitian.

I cant see the cubs repeating the 3-2 feat over Montenegro (which lost 3-1 to Bolivia in the earlier semi final) in the match for the bronze medal. After all the high hopes, Sg will more than likely come off the tournament without a medal.

    ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  12. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and is ranked 149th of 182 countries on the Human Development Index with a population of 9 million people and just suffered a catastrophic earthquake early this year.

Education levels in Haiti are low. Haiti’s literacy rate of about 53 percent (55 percent for males and 51 percent for females) falls well below the 90 percent average literacy rate for Latin American and Caribbean countries.

With our better resources and yet they can give Singapore a humiliating defeat. Maybe we have become too complacent. Something needs to be done.

  13. Thank you Steven-N for filling in on Haiti.

Haiti is a late replacement for Cuba. The team was assembled in under 6 weeks, training over a even shorter period as the country emerged painfully from a devastation. That may explain why they were hammered 9-0 by the Bolivians but I dare say Haiti wont lose this many to the same opposition in the final.

The Haiti vs Sg match was one of hunger vs fighting spirit. The hunger pang got more excrucisting as time dragged on but the human spirit was subject to frustration, loss of concentration, with loss of self belief creeping in eventually.

I see the Sg goalie as the weak-link.

At this under 15-year old level, I believe any good confident basketball player with a good jump and a firm hold of the ball will provide the stabilising effect as the custodian. But alas teams can only pick players from the list already submitted.

Also, the last 2 defenders are falling too far behind the midfielders, leaving a yawning gap for opponents to exploit, which Haiti gleefully did.

i still nurse a hope, albeit a faint one, that Sg will again beat Montenegro but in all honesty to myself, i cant see that happening………..
