I came to know about the SHC from eNN (Seng Kang). My interests are varied. I write on the forum regularly to improve my writing. In my autumn years, my priority is voluntary service. Hope to meet like-minded people and help initiate a programme/project for the disabled like the hearing impaired.

  1. Paiseh. The text layout is untidy. Don’t know how to edit the alignment because layout of text is fine before posting. Hmmm…i think it’s comprehensible.

  2. Jasmine,
I had already aligned properly for you. Try avoid using manual spacing and use shift/enter for a new line beginning. Happy trying… Cheers.. Dolly

  3. Frisna Tan – my Group Befriender, is organising
Jassmine Teo – my SHC Poet, is assisting
Freda Lim – my Dear Friend, is ‘liking’

So, Lydia Soh – my Good Self, is coming.

    (PS – need any help?)

  4. Hi Dolly # 2
Thank you for your help. Now the post is more shufu to read. :)

    Hi Freda #3
TQ. You always so positive and sunshine! :)

    Hi Lydia #4
Glad you are able to come. Your ‘spelling bee’ poem (on another thread)has given me an idea for an ice breaker game! :)

btw, do u have a friendly dog? We need a friendly dog. lol!

  5. Hi Jassmine

    Friendly Dog, I Have None
    Mighty God, I Have One
    Blessed Life, I Have Everything

(Back to post – do you need my help in program, food or

  7. Hi fellow SHCians,

Oh dear! I have so many karaoke and other activity requests from within and outside SHC to cope with, that my Mrs is beginning to feel forlorn and unwanted. She might be so ‘worked up’ that one day she might angrily chase me around the house with a rolling pin or go on strike by not cooking for me. Next time you all see me with a bandaged head and two black eye rings like a panda, the reason behind it all is self explanatory. Black eye rings look cute only on a panda, certainly not on me. Please don’t further embarrass me by demanding to account for my absence. Okay? Thanks.

Will anybody out there be kind enough to lend me a newly bought UNUSED metal dustbin cover so that I can use it to shield myself from my wife’s missiles hurled at me?

Now I need to ‘pak thor’ more often with her just like the good old days of blossoming courtship and beautiful dreams.

If you don’t often see me at a SHC activity, the answer is obvious.

    Have a nice day. Thanks.

    Terry Tang

  8. Hi Terry #8,

Paiseh to point out – I think your comment doesn’t belong on this thread. i liak bo kew (don’t understand why it’s on this thread). Hope you’re not offended.

  9. Hi Frisna – How are you? It’s been a long time since we had
the potluck party at Mary Chan house.

Hi Jassmine – Warm greetings to you. I have yet the pleasure of meeting you.
(I’m one of those non-active,selective participant
    of SHC’s events….lol)
Are you seriously looking for a friendly dog per your #5 posting?
I happen to have a awesome, happy & friendly dog – a cocker
    spaniel to be exact.
I’ll be happy to bring him to the event provided you can
chauffeur us to & fro as I dont own a car.

    Cheers,
    Constance

  10. Hi Constance #10
Wah you have a friendly cocker spaniel! If the picnic takes place, he/she will be the most popular member there, i’m sure.
I’ll see if anyone coming can provide transport coz i don’t have a car too. btw, where is your place?

    Hi Lydia #6
Do you drive and can provide transport for Constance and her friendly dog? It’s ok if the answer is “A car for transport I have none” LOL!

  11. Hi Jassmine Teo #9

That (#8) was my roundabout way of saying I couldn’t attend most SHC activities – a few should be OK – because I’m preoccupied with karaoke commitments. Already I have received some requests from SHCians to attend their coming karaoke activities apart from friends’.

It is just too bad some of my made-up jokes fell flat. Joking at my own expense won’t create unintended enemies. But joking at others’ most probably will as everyone’s level of sensitivity is not the same. And what is more, not all are thrilled by jokes. Whatever else, I’m disinclined to be quarrelsome or confrontational for no rhyme or reason. Thks for indirectly suggesting to me to be more careful over what to write in the future.

    Cheers,

    Terry

  12. Hi Sam Huat #7
It’s ok. Chor kang more important. How about the new faces under your care? All kena chor kang also? Think our job market not bad now. lol!

    Hi Terry #12
So glad to know you are not quarrelsome or confrontational.

    Cheers :)

  13. Hi Lydia #14
    Thanks for your generosity.

    Hi Constance #15
Thanks for bringing man’s best friend. woof! woof!

    Cheers :)

  14. I’m new and a little lost how to navigate the site, what are the activities, etc. Suggestion: Can we have a presentation on this for newbies like me at sometime, maybe not at this event cos it’s outdoor. As I mentioned to our wonderful club manager, can do at my centre at North Bridge Road if you wish.

Anyway, would like to join in for this if it’s confirmed. Thanks!

  15. Hi Jessica # 17
Welcome to the potluck picnic. About navigating the SHC website, it’s not difficult once you know what to do. All it takes is 5 min of explanation! We’ll do this at the picnic. :)

    Hi Kei #18

  17. Hi Jassmine, Frisna and Lydia,

I am very pleased to have you put in time and effort to be Befrienders to new members. From our latest news updates to all members, we have again heard that new members feel unsure how to approach the more senior members, and are unable to feel comfortable with an established group.

Please cotinue this good effort. You have my support to make such events successful.

I wish more members will join the Befrienders group. Joy
Chuang has come up with this name, so I wish this role name will become successful as we go along.

Please raise your hand if you wish to be a Befriender.

  19. Hi all picnickers

I revisited BGdns this afternoon (a perfect day for picnics)and saw some notices that say no feeding of swans and fishes, but the notices do not mention any fines! :)

The gazebos are listed on the maps in the BGdns as ‘shelters’. The one we are eying (it’s VERY popular) is the one with a grassy ‘promontory’ that ‘juts’ into the ECO lake. It also has a clear, wide view of the Eco lake.

  20. I wanted to join in but I have only attended one Botanic Gardens Walk (first time) I dont mind to pay but potluck I really have no idea how to cook so what do I do if I am interested to come. Can someone advise me by email asap

  21. Hi Vincent

Welcome to the SHC and to the potluck picnic on the 17th. Please read your e-mail. You will meet other ‘newbies’ and members who are not very active, at the picnic. We r also very interested in hearing you sing :)

  22. Hi Jassmine the SHC’s Poet

Have seen your name popping all over the SHC website, last saturday’s walk event was talking about you with Lydia mentioning meeting you in person.

Not a very old SHC’s member though participated in some of the events but does not have the pleasure to meet you. Do insert my name for tomorrow session, will be bringing some curry puff.

    Cheers
    Lam

  23. Hi Jassmine

    Sorry for the late response.
I’m not sure if I can make it but sure like to catch up with Lydia.
Will let u know by tomorrow.
Pls send me an email so we can exchange phone contacts.

    Thanks & Rgds

  24. Hi Lam #29 & Peggy #30

Better late than never. We are very happy that both of you are interested in joining us for the potluck picnic, altho Peggy is tentative. We r meeting at the Botanic Gdns MRT (Circle line), passenger service counter at 3p.m.

Check your email for my mob ph no……….

ok, see u both there this afternoon. :)

  25. Hi all picnickers

Today 17 Nov is the picnic day. Don’t forget to REMEMBER to come! :)

P.S. if sky is overcast when you are setting off for the BGdns, COME. This is the BEST weather for an outdoor picnic in a hot and humid country. The gazebo (shelter) is big enough to shelter 15 people comfortably if it should rain when we are there. So fear not the elements, folks.

    cheers

  26. dear jass

thank you so much for being the real EO! and insist on carrying oout the program despite the threat of thunder storm and leg
    limping! well done!
for those that i met for the first time today thanks for coming. am glad you guys and gals do mingle around.
as for the “second” timers nice to meet you again. hope all of you enjoyed the games riddles and the prize.
salute to Kristy for being so quick minded and to the new SHC talent iVincent!

  27. It’s hard to believe they were strangers,
    And distant acquaintances to one another;
The way they all chatted –
    Like ducks taking to water!

And Gibson was such a good scout,
    Bringing back two lost sheep.
Dashing up and down the undulating terrain,
Fit as a fiddle, this macho Bo Peep!

A perfect day for a picnic,
A beautiful view from the gazebo,
Of greenery – trees and lawn
And black swans gliding on Lake Eco.

And a friendly dog looking for a scratch,
And food so plentiful, much was left –
From vadai with green chilli from Little India
    To cut papaya individually wrapped.

The games were fun all averred.
Then Vincent suddenly offered a cash prize,
And the audience suddenly became more alert!
    Oh what a marvellous surprise!

    The picnic went into overtime.
The sun set; dusk was approaching,
The happy picnickers packed up; they had to leave-
The nocturnal residents were fast awaking.

    **********
Thank you, all picnickers, for your friendship and camaraderie. :)

  28. I came with Constance & Doggie,
I left with Constance, Doggie, Frisna & Vincent.
We acquired new friends (and dog),
We played guessing games with unique prizes,
    We ate endless snacks,
We sang “Green, Green Grass Of Home”
    Aptly As Our Parting Shot.

Thank you, EOs Jassmine & Frisna for organising.
Thank you, Everyone for your ‘friendliness & sportingness’.
    Do Keep In Touch,
    Lydia Soh

  29. Thank you Jassmine & Frisna for being such good planner for
the picnic – there were food galore, jokes, singalong, quizes, charade, lots of fun & laughter.

A BIG Thank you to Lydia for providing transport for myself & Cookie, the Hot Dog.Cookie was totally smash-out after a afternoon of excitement – running around with ball in his mouth and chasing the black swans & birds around the lake.
Because of you 3 wonderful ladies, my circle of friends are widened to include:

    1) Gibson Tan – the self-studied acupressure expert who stays forever young by practising on himself.

2)Annie – the Tai-tai with green fingers and travels far and wide as at when she feels like it. How envious!

    3) Peggy – our aspiring long-distance cyclist who also happened to make a refreshing ice-cold longan with fresh lemon dessert. Thank you Peggy!

    4) Kristy – Charming wife of late Robert. Happy to make your acquaintance. You were fast & quick witted on the riddle, winning yourself a cash prize from Vincent.

    5) Pat – once an over-worked secretary, now happily doing a less demanding receptionist work. Happy for you…I’m still struggling with the workload…

    6) Kie – admire your mastery of the Japanese languange. Maybe one day, should learn some Japanese from you. Arikato!

    7) Weng – with the advice that one must try to visit one of world’s 7 Wonders at least once – The Angko Wat in Cambodia.

    8) Ah Lam – the keep-fit and stay healthy enthusiat.

    9) Vincent – “investment guru” who said that after each time he invested, market crash will follow. He’s also the
jokes, riddles and cash provider of the day.

Thank you one and all! (Pls pardon me if my memory left out anyone.) It had been a great pleasure having your company yesterday.
Hope to meet you all again and building on the friendship.

    Best regards,
    Constance.

  30. Constance??????!
Indeed i enjoyed myself thoroughly….the introductions, the games etc etc….very well-organized. The group size was just right so that everyone could mingle & interact, none really feel inhibited to chat or to share, am I right? Wish i was able to stay longer. ‘Twas great to get to know all of you.

And yes, a big thank you to Jassmine, Frisna……& everyone of u who avail yourselves to make this gathering a success!

    Peggy

  31. Hi Constance

as for Cookie, perhaps we can have an outing for the ‘4 legs SHC members’ 1 of these days?

  32. Hi Jass

Thanks and pleased to meet you in this small gathering and not forgetting Frisna and Lydia.

Really have a nice chat with you Frisna and all in the gathering are just like old friends.
