12 November 2011 Monthly Walk – Botanic Garden

November 2011 Monthly Walk – Botanic Garden
Serene Low / Chris Chan in SHC main bulletin, Walking

Date: 12 November 2011 (Saturday)
Meeting Place: Botanic Garden MRT, Control Station (Circle Line, CC19)
Start Time: 4.30pm
Duration: approx 2 hours
EOs for this walk: Serene Low and ChristinaCL Chan

From the entrance of the Botanic Garden at Bt Timah/Cluny; we will walk towards the Eco Lake skirting along the edge to Jocab Ballas Children’s Garden.   This is a specialized garden constructed for children to learn about plants through play.  It will stimulate even adults to the wonder of plants and nature!  Let’s spend 20 minutes in this area.

Passing the Eco Lake from another side, we head towards a paved slope upwards to the Healing Garden.  This 2.5 hectare garden, took 3 years to set up, and was launched recently in October by President Tony Tan.  It is the largest in Singapore, showcasing a collection of 500 species of SE Asian medicinal plants.  The Healing Garden is designed in the shape of a human body — thematically relating to parts or systems of the body, such as "Head, Neck, Ears, Nose and Throat" and "Digestive and Related Systems".   It will be enriching to browse around and don’t be surprised to find some plants that have medicinal values are actually common plants.

After that we will continue to stroll through this green sanctuary via a different route back to the entrance towards Adam Food Centre for our dinner.

The rainy season seems to be here early.  Do bring your umbrella or rain coat, your camera, drinking bottle, sun block, a hat and walking sneakers.

This is an educational “green walk” you would not want to miss!

  1. Hi Terence

Sorry to interfere, #7 June is a new member recommended by me and have registered under name June Tan, she is my sister-in-law, her spouse Danny Lye and they have been participating in quite a number of SHC activities. See if you can search in your record under the name of June Tan.

    Tks & Rgds
    Hamidah

  2. thanks Hamidah,

Thanks for the clarification. Please avoid using “June” as the name to register for events. We have 16 June’s.

Please welcome her to the club.

    Terence Seah

  3. Hi Terence #4

You’re most welcome. I will advise Danny Lye that for future participation, to register his wife name in full.

  5. Hi EOs & walk team,
Apologies that due to unforseen commitment, need to give a miss on the Botanic Garden walk & hopefully able to make it the next walk before end year 2011.
Thank you for organising the monthly walk.

    See you all this Saturday.

  7. Hi, the walk team….

  8. Hi EOs
It is raining heavily at my place and at Lai Hock’s place as well. Lai Hock has decided that he will not be coming for the walk.
I will still come if it stops raining by 3.00pm.
I like to join in the fun very much.
    Cheers King Seng

  9. Hi-Serene
It’s raining heavily at my place. Being seniors we have
decided to give this walk a skip.
thks for the arrangement. Hope to join next time.
    Peter

  10. Hi Serene/ChrisCL,
It is raining dogs n cats here but I can see dat registration is still ongoing even till now.. Maybe more will be going 4 tis walk. Doe I must admit dat I m not a walkist cos no stamina and time constraints lo but I am always tempted 2 join every walk dat the walk teams had posted. I always liked the ways these events were posted with much clear instructions to all members pertaining to where to wait, wat time 2b there, wat other attractions 2 look out for n wat/where 2 eat aft each walk, etc etc. My greatest saluation to all of you.. I will definitely join all of us 1 day when I am more confident to do so… Cheers and hope d rain will stop soon and all of you hv a nice cooling walk… Dolly

Sorry, I am unable to update this walk in d latest web calendar as laptop is undergoing some maintenance servicing lor…

  11. Dear Participants,

In the west, it is raining. We the EOs will still be waiting to meet all who dare to venture…walking in the rain is FUN! raindrops keep falling on my head,,,,,
Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain,,,, :D

Come with umbrellas, raincoats… we’ll be there!

Let’s Ask for the sun to come out of hiding hehe

    Cheerio!
    ChristinaCL Chan

  12. #26 DollyL, thanks for your concern… fear not, our walkers have good faith hehe

walking need no confidence just a pair of strong legs! and you have :D

    Cheerio!
    ChristinaCL Chan

  13. WE BRAVE THE RAIN! KUDOs! to all who came!

With umbrellas in hand or with raincoats on, 34 of us walked, chatting; the rain didnt bother us a wee bit!

Thanks much to Danny for talking a couple of shots of the group whilst IN the rain! We, couldnt have more photos taken.

AliceS has such an elephant memory. She recalled that the walk from Ghim Moh to Ulu Pandan, all the way to IMM long ago, some of you present was there, too (March 2010), we had also walked in heavier rain than today, the distance was much longer and most of us have no umbrellas or raincoats. So, this was like “wet wet water”.

Today, we have some new members, what an eye opener it must be! hahahaha I look forward to see you guys again and again in our monthly walks.

FYI, Serene and I did the recce abt 2 weeks ago, the rain was much much heavy, our lower half body and our shoes were drenched. :D

Dear walkers, THANKS for this spirit! it makes our effort absolutely worthwhile!

If you feel today you have not exercised your legs, COME for our next walk on Saturday 10th December.
Our LAST walk for 2011. YOU will walk, walk, walk :D :D

MARK your calendar. LOOK OUT for our post about 2 weeks before the walk.

    NOTE:
RAIN or SHINE, we will be there once walk is scheduled! Every 2nd Saturday of the month(unless otherwise informed).
Unless it is not safe to step outdoors.

    Have a good weekend!

    Gracias!
    ChristinaCL Chan

  14. Just had a wet but most enjoyable Walk cum Dinner – all due to everyone’s high & sporting spirit to brave the rain and walk. Like to welcome again the new members – Melody, Stephen and Winson. Also nice to meet Christina Pan, after a long time.

Like ChristinaCL Chan said, keep 10 Dec free for our next Walk – we love your company, and you will be pleasantly surprised.

    Lydia Soh

  15. 29. Christina,
Thanks for organising the walk. Even with the rain, we still brave throughout the journey. Well done everyone for their bravery – rain or shine, we stay together as 1 SHC.

Due to the heavy downpour, I was unable to take more photos of the beautiful sceneries. Only managed to capture the group photos and a few shots of you fellows walking or talking on candid shots. I have done finished with my photos and have upload it to my Facebook @dannylye for viewing. Photos will also be posted on the SHC website after approval has been granted.

    Rgds,
    Danny Lye

  16. Hi Christina & Serene

Yes! we make it, walking in the rain with high team spirits. The rain does not deter us from walking, chating, laughter & meeting up with new members. My hubby K C Wong, friend Grace Gan & myself would like to thank both of you & the walk team for organisng this walk.

Hope we’ll meet again at Dec walk if time permits.

    Rgds
    Hamidah

  17. Having missed out all the beautiful sceneries yesterday due to the heavy downpour, today (Sun 13 Nov) my wife, June Tan and myself went back to Botanic Garden to take more photos under the humid hot sun. There were lot of people around taking photos, enjoying the sceneries and having fellowship together eating, merrying on a Sunday afternoon.

I have included some of this photos on my Facebook for your viewing pleasure. Hope you all will like them since most of us missed out the beauty of a sunny day yesterday.

    Rgds,
    Danny Lye

  18. Hi Lydia Soh #30,

As prompted, following is my masterpiece:-

12th Nov 2011 what a wet wet Saturday
Raining cats and dogs an exceptional day
SHC walkers sturdy as evergreen trees
    All gathered vis-a-vis honey bees

Attendance taken Botanic Gardens MRT Station
    Spirits undaunted thence Christina’s briefing
Let’s go Botanic Gardens already 4pm plus
Umbrellas hand in hand a venture a wanderlust

    Sauntering in anticipation
    Still raining no perspiration
The Healing Garden in Botanic Gardens
NParks nurtured various herbal plants and trees
A showpiece an attraction peoples overseas

Group photographs a must down memory lane
Danny eveready thee camera zooming thy best aim
In spite a downpour thy shots evermore
    Thou cajoling an even spread
All stood still a nice catch

Adam Road Food Centre thee ultimate
Plenteous food though but no nonya cake
After tucking in an evening meal
Time to go – Home sweet home!

Let’s wait the next monthly walk
An ideal outing SHCians could mix and talk
Kudos to all EOs and those behind thy scene
    Maketh Silverhairsclub an evergreen thing

    Best regards,
    Eddy Lee

  19. Freda Lim – my dear friend,
Come & walk with us on 10 Dec, and your “where ha” will be answered enjoyably. If it rains on that day, your love will materialise, except that you will be having a heavy walk under (hopefully) short rain.

    Danny Lye – our photographer
Your photos, whether they are taken under the rain or under the sun – they all showcased your skill and heart.

    Eddy Lee – our poet
    Silverhairsclub in need,
    Of your masterpiece indeed.
    No prompting is needed,
    Because your poems we need
    To stay evergreen needfully.

    (Please keep them coming…)

  20. #36: Lydia Soh,

Thank you. So..so..lah! My passion came lately after receiving the golden handshake. Walking is one of my pastimes (Margaret also) to spend the rest of our golden years. Didn’t know writing Singaporean poems interest people like you and some others though mine is not of the Shakespearean kind. However, penning such thoughts take some time and is merely to share our joy and encounters.

Danny Lye – Our photographer (my yesteryear buddy). His interest and passion..Outings camera on hand and go pap (places and peoples)..Shoot and shoot various snapshots. Then review, edit and disseminate to all friends to share and rejoice. Photos remain but memories may wane.

(Hope you and the rest could keep the Silverhairsclub’s flag flying unfurled)

  21. 35. Lydia,

Thanks for the compliments. Will always be there for photos shooting whenever there’s a walk organise by SHC if time permits.

This is another form of exercise for myself and June Tan to keep fit and healthy as we seldom and not so often exercise other than walking around our neighbourhood. Photography is just another hobby to capture what I see and to share with friends. The skill is yet up to the standard of a professional photographer. Just so-so to please myself.

    Rgds,
    Danny Lye
