Mahjong kakis and groups. Join a group or another group.

Recently, when I attended the monthly gathering for the West Enders, I found out that mahjong was a much talk about topic.  Once in a while, I also get to hear of individuals trying to find kakis; but have difficulties finding kakis near their home.  And, sometimes, when I attend functions, I see there are so many mahjong players.  I cannot play as I am afraid to lose money.

To help you find other kakis near your home, you may indicate you are a mahong kakis and the name of the road you stay, or just say North, South, East or West; and I shall list out by regions.  This is like a who’s who in mahjong.  I shall then ask the most active player to be the EO.  You dont have to organise, you just have to coordinate, North, South, East or West.

  1. Hi Gabriella, would you believe there is a course for beginners – I’m attending it. 2 sessions at 2.5 hrs each for $28. Got course notes some more! Patrick, it’s very fun to play banlak but must be playing for fun hor, little little money like last time at Frisna’s. I dont mind losing, but little bit ok?

  2. hi every body ? What is Ban-lak ? Google do not have answers
for me !! a kind of Sg Mahjong ?

WHY no one response to Chess-playing ? Thank you.

    cheers!

  3. hi Felice

    You are so cute..
    Banlak is actually Black Jack…

    Have a great day.,
I love chess..but simply no patience…maybe another 10 years..I will begin to luv it.

    regards
    pat

  4. Hi Janet & patrick,

    Thanks so much..now, i know what is ban-luck !!
10 yrs ago when i heard aunties said wah-a-lau, wah-a-lau in the hairdresser salon, i thought in my heart “who are they
refering to ? son, father, brother ??” Then my very hair dresser
told me ” felice, si-mi wah-a-lau, son, brother or father ??
ai ya, husband lah! remember NOT si-mi Andy Lau also “

  5. Wa Mei Li, looks like 2 of us typed at the same time and the replies came in 1 after another… so much for St Pat’s affinity….Cheers.

Hi Felice, are you from Singapore…Peranakan ya?

  6. Hi Gabriella, It’s in the West (Clementi). Near MRT station. 1st lesson 28 Feb 7 – 9.30 pm. 2nd lesson 6 March same time. Hope you can make it. Will email you later.

  7. Hi Terence

    Thanks for starting this thread.

I have not not played mahjong and pool for many, many years.

Used to enjoy these two activities when I was younger (am

rusty but I think I can pick up again quickly).

I would be interested to join a group in my area if timing

fits. It is best for me in the evenings but certain

weekdays afternoons may also be good.

I live in the Central area, at the junction of Braddell

    Road and Upper Serangoon Road.

    Thanks.

    sb

  8. Hi Felice,

I luv to play International Chess since my army days. Bought ton of books just to improve on the games. Played online chess most night till 3.00am. My chess set and clock is always with me in my car. Have chess will travel!

Chinese chess, I also play but not to good but ready to take on anybody.

Those keen to learn mahjong I can teach without charge, just provide table and chairs and enought kakis. My fees is two cups of coffee ‘siew tai”. How dat for a deal?

    Dan

  9. Aiyo Susan, Gabrielle and everyone:

no need to REALLY pay to learn mahjong. when you play the real game and keep losing that’s the school fee!!
Like Dan, i can teach whoever want to learn free of charge. no need coffee too as i’m none caffeine drinker.

By the way, Terence, i’ve been wanting to organise a fixed game day (serious & fun board games) for everyone. may i borrow your post here or create a new one?

  10. Hi Dan and Frisna

Re: mahjong lessons, would appreciate if you could keep me posted should you be starting any mahjong for beginners.

    Regards,
    Gabriella

  11. Mahjong! no problem, although I’m intermediate level, can still share some pointers with beginners. Anyway I have a Jun Shi behind me. Just count us in!

  12. #18 Gabriella: you live in the east right? i’ve another ‘learner’ also from east.
#19. Dorine: if you want to share some pointers with the 2 of them, we can set up 1 session soon. what’s your timing like?
#13 SB: you may join the east or the west. weekdays/weekends mid afternoon is ok with me.

#20 Felice: Dan Huang lives in the west, he can be the trainer for the west side

  13. Hi Frisna m always keen to learn something new not that I am a sitting down kind of person, mahjong is long hours session game if you are teaching wld not mind to learn , I live in the east (Simei) and free only on mon and wed aftns if the time and day suit me wld love to learn. Know of this game Rummy O or Rummy Cube most seniors play this game too don take up as much time as mahjong – 2 hrs good enough

  14. Dan ,

Can you organise some lessons for Mahjong/Chinese Chess
for the West ? My hubby said, the fees are NOT 2 cups of coffee but you can choose from the LIM’s Menu for the week…
chinese food ? western food ? Japanese food ? Penang fried
kuay tiau ? But all are in healthier versions…
    thank you.

  15. fyi, Mahjong has now been recognised by our ever-strict Government to have benefits for the Silver Haired Creatures.
Where once Karaoke was banned…and now we have it all over…

    The benefits are quite tremendous:
    1. Mental Flexibility – it requires quite intensive Intellectual prowess to think and strategise.
    2. Physical Dexterity – it helps if you cant move much and yet your hands move
    3. Vocal Variety – where one shouts Pong or Tai or ^%$^&$^%
depending on the circumstances and U get to slam the tile onto the table too – giving some tai chi effect of cause and effect..

If one has the time, it is indeed a good way to de-stress or even add stress to one’s mundane life.

So one can find Mahjong Clubs sprouting at the various CCs now – of course, cant play with $$$, but you know Singaporeans lah… v creative…

In life, there is always something to learn, so East or West, if there are kind souls to teach, if time permits,
    I would gladly join..

    Have a good Week ahead..

  16. Hi Frisna,
Weekday evenings and Sat(s) are timings that can be considered. I suggest we set-up two tables, one for experts and another for beginners so we can have the experts around to guide us when required.

    DT

  17. I don’t mind card games sessions like Gin Rummy or Black Jack where the bets are small. Cannot afford to lose too much or else family has no food to eat…:(

I cannot sit still for long…backside itchy must move about and around so mahjong is not attractive to me.

    I live in the East..

    Cheers
    Ros

  18. Hi Janet Loo,

Met you at last Fri’s gathering. Re yr comment #28, I too don’t like to sit too long hence don’t play Mahjong. However I like to play Rummi O/Rummi Kub. This game is more interesting than Black Jack as it needs a little strategising. Only five or ten minutes explanation is required and you can play immediately. However I don’t play with cash, just to stimulate the brain and fellowship. Live in the East. Cheers, Alice Seah

  19. just had my first mahjong lesson last tuesday – learned a couple of good tips for the slow learners like me – if you forget how many groups of 3s and a 2 in your hands to end a game, use your hand as a reference. See, the phalanges are fourteen in number, three for each finger, and two for the thumb. So you’ll need 5 groups of 4 threes and 1 two! isnt that cute?

  20. Hi, kwan pearl & simon lee,

please do keep me informed WHEN & WHERE is the mahjong
session.. Thanks. i live in the WEST too.
email address, please refer to Chaingmai trip.

  21. #24 Pat: very agree with your comments. but bear in mind we don’t want to treat mahjong as gambling or earning a living or else nasty things will happen on the table when some players can’t take the heat when they lose

so with the principle of “IMPROVING THE MIND in a fun and exciting way” i hereby would like to start the lesson:

#18 Gabrielle + #19 Dorine + SK Easterners: will saturday after 3PM good for you? (PS Dorine: to begin think can only form 1 table)

#20 Felice #30 Pearl & Simon Westerner: I hope Dan will be able to teach you. if not i can volunteer providing you’ve the table + tiles at home

#22 janet #26 Ros #28 Alice: am going to put up a post regarding the ‘short time’ game end of this month. you may register there. ok?

#13 SB #29 Susan (guess you must be proficient by now?) + Pat: you may join either the East or the West

Please write to me at frispjt@yahoo.com to discuss further about timing/day and place. thanks
