IT Interest Group Meeting on 15-06-2012 (Friday)

Last month, we had a hands-on session in one condo’s function hall. As for the Concern & Care venue, we are still awaiting their reply. So, for the time being, we still can meet at our usual place at Plaza Singapura.

This coming meeting, we can discuss about the differences between the desktop computer, the laptop, the tablet, the iTouch/iPad, the smart phones and others.

We plan to have a small gathering of size not more than 12 SHC members including the EO, for an effective and meaningful discussion, on a first-come-first-serve basis.

The details:

  • Date: 15-06-2012 (Friday)
  • Venue: Plaza Singapura Kopitiam Food Court (Level 6). Nearest MRT at Dhoby Ghaut.
  • Time: 3.00 PM to 5.00 PM

  1. Greetings Hew Lee

This not-so-smart member simply cannot get things going with his smartphone, so he’s only too glad to sign up for your session.

Thank you and be seeing you!

  2. Hello, can one of the big brother/sister who has the edit button help us to correct this including this comment. Appreciate that & a big thank you.
Continue to enjoy your week end.
    Cheers

  3. Hi Hew Lee

Please register me for this talk.

Re. edit – as the post writer u should be able to edit the comments. Look for the little ‘e’ at the end of the date/time of the comment.

    Cheers :)

  4. Hello Hew Lee,

How long will the IT meeting last? I would like to attend. I shall come from work altho may sometimes be a bit late.

We own a Desk top and no other type of machine. I hope to learn from your discussion.

    Thank you.

    Geok Suan.

  5. John Howe (#1), Andrew Yeung (#2), Rosalind Soh (#4), Alice Seah (#6), Peng Peng (#7) Jassmine Teo (#8), Geok Suan (#9), Peri Liew (#11) & Thomas Loh (#12) – welcome to ITIG; C U.

Andrew: If you have nothing to ask, just bring yourself. It is not possible to do hands-on in a public place (food court). Meeting is just for members to catch up with each other. We do have IT questions raised and other members can help me to address it. Don’t forget, I am also learning to update myself.

Geok Suan – please check the email I sent you.

  6. Hi Hew Lee
Thanks for the reply. I will bring myself and the money enough for a teh-C.

See you and the others on that day. Good morning.

  7. Hi Terence (#10)

With the ongoing discussion with Concern & Care (C&C) to request them to allow SHC members to use their classroom (with Wi-Fi) for free, this ITIG monthly meeting cannot be an EO event. This is because out of 20 participants in the class, C&C requested us (SHC) to allow them to include 6 of their members. This means that every ITIG meeting will have a mix of 14 and 6 SHC and C&C members respectively. This was reported through my Post dated 27th April 2012 via …

At the moment, my Post is not Publish automatically – still have to go through Review by someone. Having the Edit button can allow me to present the final text of Post more professionally, should amendments be required after receiving feedback from prospective participants.

    Cheers

  8. Hew Lee, so nice of you to organize this.

    Please include me, as tentative.

I only own a laptop, and an outdated mobile phone.

Would like to learn more about the newer gadgets.

    Cheers,
    Jac

Rosalind – I will email you separately to avoid breaking any rule on this web site.

  11. Hi Hew Lee
From your write-up (post), i understand that for this IT discussion to be ‘effective and meaningful’ the group size should not exceed 12. Now that there are 19 registrants, i assume the effectiveness/meaningfulness of the discussion would be greatly diluted.

Hence, may i suggest that these popular IT topics be repeated on another day convenient to you, for registrants no. 12 – 19(plus 4 new registrants)? Just a suggestion….for the effectiveness/meaningfulness of the discussion for attendees. Tks.

  12. Hi Jassmine (#28)

The reason for mentioning 12 participants (max) to be effective is that, in this food court, they have long rectangular table that can sit 12 persons comfortably. When we have more than 12, then the latecomers will have to sit on another table. Based on our past experience, not everyone has compelling questions to address.

I understand in a not so ideal environment, noisy background, small confined space; it is difficult to listen and to take notes at the same time. So I always tell those who attend not to bother to take notes, just listen and ask questions, if any.

I will summarize the discussion and email to everyone attended the relevant follow-up notes. So I suggest we carry on what has been said in #27 and do our best to meet everyone’s needs.

  13. Hi Hew Lee,

If you wish to find a quiet place with tables and chairs, may i suggest you visit City Square Mall Level 4 Kopitiam. You can hold a meeting without much distraction to others.

    Winnie

  14. Hi Hew Lee,,

    I will be there.

For those attending the ITIG:- Please note that I be helping Mr. Hew Lee because of the group size. Those fellow members with a technical question or problem can approach me and sit closer to me. Bring your problem gadget if it is portable for a diagnosis or bring a “thumb-drive” to have a copy of the software for remote support if it is computer related.

    I see you all there.

    Cheers

  15. Winnie (#30) – Thanks Winnie for your feedback. I agree some food courts, including City SQ Mall, are quieter than Plaza Sing. Since Plaza Sing. venue is only temporary – until we firm up the C&C venue, we will maintain our meeting at the said venue.

Ronald (#31) – Hi Ronald, thanks for your help. C U on that day.

    hewlee

  16. Annie (#33) – Thanks for your interest. For your info, even though Ronald is coming to help me, the first part of the meeting, all participants still group together to listen to what I have to say on the topic of the day. We hope we don’t cause a nuisance of ourselves and get chase out.

If this topic is of interest to you, please email me. I can arrange a separate one for you and your friends – by invitation only.

I will try to put my discussion text in the Internet. So those with iPhones, smartphones, iPads or tablets that can connect to the Internet can sit behind and read the text. This will relieve me from raising my voice. So, do bring along if you have one.

  18. Hi Hew Lee,

Please use the EDIT feature, since you are the EO of this event. This will help you from repeating the names. try it.

    Terence Seah

  19. hi. I’ve been following this thread and find it a very useful tool and with the lack of facilities & Noisy environment…can be quite a burden.

Im a Grassroots leader in some GRCs…and tonite I proposed hosting you guys in one of the CCs…FREE OF CHARGE.. just 3 min walk from an MRT..along the Green line – just outside the city…

If you guys are interested…. to host it for this round or the next – let me know…

The CC is also equipped with links to Wireless@SG and it will be a great opportunity to teach members to learn how to link it in most parts of Singapore….and also to have free wireless to surf and do a lot of things.

Drop me a mail Hew. at patoeishc@gmail.com if you are interested…and if Terence does not mind.

  20. Pat Oei (#37) – Thanks for your intention. We greatly appreciate it and it does help to have discussion in a quieter environment. You may be aware we are also discussing with Concern & Care with similar objective (#16). I have email you with details of meeting up with you.

    Terence and fellow SHC members:
Please let me know if you have any views/comments of holding our ITIG in a Community Club, FOC & with the compliments of the CC management committee.

    hewlee

  21. hi Hew, nice talking to you this am,
After the OK by Terence, I will arrange for you to see the rooms and discuss with the CC Director.

    Have a great day.
    regards
    Pat

  22. Thanks Terence (#40).

Hi Pat (#39), let’s meet and check up the proposed venue. Hope this will be the permanent home for our ITIG meeting venue.

  23. wow…22 of us!

I plan to first visit the Yamaha Music Store at PS and thereafter head for my favorite Indonesian Ayam Penggang stall at the far right corner of the food court at 1.30pm. Feel free to join me if you are keen. I can make out 16 names (not bad huh?) on the list, so it shouldn’t be a hassle to spot you. Hope to cya! (No need to register for this one, haha.)

  24. Hi Hew Lee
Sorry to occupy your space to do some personal thing. Hope you don’t mind.

    Hi Yew kwong ??
    SOS…… SOS…… SOS

Previously, I always use the Zamzar site to converse the YouTube link into the video or audio file. Today when I try to do so, I found YouTube has blocked Zamzar to do the conversion. I feel very depressed about this and make me reminded you (sorry for my out of sight, out of mind and only remember you when needed).

To me, you are the CM of SHC – not Club Manager, but Cycling Man, Computer Man or even sometimes the Crazy Man (haha). Are there others way (e.g freewares, another sites) to do the conversion? Please enlighten me.

If not convenient to tell in the site, please e-mail me: wcyeung28@hotmail.com

    Thanks, ??

  25. Hi Hew Lee,

I have been out-of-sort for the past 2 days…fever yesterday, no appetite and although I have no fever today, I could only eat 2 mouthful of porridge this morning and 1 tablespoon of noodles. If I still cannot eat properly by tomorrow I’ll have to see a doctor. Of course, without food I have no energy and I just feel like sleeping all the time.
Please excuse me from tomorrow’s meeting.

    Sorry
    :(

  26. Hi
    Annie Loh (#33)
    Susan Tan (#42)
    Rosalind Lee (#46) &
    Daisy Yeo (#47)

After some consideration, I think it is best I arrange a special session with four or not more than six of you to repeat this IT topic. We can hold it in any Starbucks or MacDonald outlets, e.g. in HarbourFront. The reason why I chose Starbucks or MacDonald is because of the availability of free hot-spot Wi-Fi – if you don’t have one free account, you can apply one and test it in these hot spot area. We need this for future IT discussions.

Please email me at hewlee@gmail.com is you all are interested in the above proposal.

  27. Hi Yew Kwong (#49) – Yes YouTube (Google) has stopped allowing Zamzar to rip the songs/video. Nowadays, I seldom use this. I have acquired an audio streaming device (Internet Radio) that can receive a lot of stations around the world with all types/kind of music – classical, jazz, country, rock, including news, etc.

I do not know of a similar site that can do the same job as Zamzar.

  28. Hi Andrew at message 45:

Let me share my infrastructure setup for my browser/computer to ensure that no videos are not undownloadable to me. First thing make sure you use a Firefox browser (internet explorer is not so user-friendly) and make sure you have some of the add-on/extensions or standalone software programme on your computer.

    (1) Internet Download Manager – It can simultaneously download a few segments of the video files and instantly combined it when it finish downloading. It can easily download at least a few times faster than other add-on/extensions or software programme. It cost about US$30 however if you have lobang you can get it cheaper or even free.
    (2) Ant Video Downloader – It can download video from youtube, google, dailymotion etc. It’s a browser add-on/extensions. When a video is downloadable, the button becomes clickable. This is free. Go to your Firefox browser — Tools ==> Add-ons to search and install.
    (3) Download Helper – similar as item (2)
    (4) SnagIt – It can record video live apart from other features. You need to activate your microphone and speaker in order to do a recording. It cost US$49.95
    (5) Camtasia Studio- similar as item (4) but at a higher quality video recording. You do not need to activate your audio recordings as it will retrieve the audio files automatically from your system, if the video has audio. It cost US$299 however if you have lobang you can get much cheaper or even free.

I have another few extensions/add-ons reside on my browser for back-up in case some of them are not working. However most of the time I use Internet Download Manager as it is fast and user friendly – an icon “Download this video” will appear as along it detect a video which is downloadable.

I only use Snagit or Camtasia Studio when the video is not downloadable but I die die still want to rip the video. I will then do a live recording. It take much much longer for a live recording.

  29. Hi Steven Ng

Thanks very much for your information. My son has advised me to use the Firefox browser previously. As I am quite lazy, never give it a try. This time, no choice, must try it out.

I think the item (2) Ant Video Downloader can suit my requirement, then I will try the other free one first. May be will try the not free one later if I found interesting.

Nice to know there is another CM in SHC. From your previous comments, I found you know many things besides IT. Will seek your advice/opinion when need. Thanks in advance. Hope to meet you some day in the future.

  30. If you prefer you can alway google with the phrase “free video downloader” and there are tons of free video downnloaders for you to choose.

We have met a few times – monthly cycling at ECP and Pengerang.

Hope to see you again if my schedule permit.

  31. Hi Steven Ng,

    Thanks for your information again.

My memory is not bad, but remember people (faces and names) is a blind point for me. Yesterday when I attended the ITIG meeting, I was complaint by a lady that we have met twice, but I still don’t know her name.

    Hi Jacqueline

Next time when we met, if I still cannot call out your name, please knock 3 times my head.

  32. Hi Andrew,

Definitely you are better than me as far as remember peoples faces are concerned. I can only remember a person unless he is the prettiest, ugliest, the tallest, nosiest – there must be some uniqueness in the person before I can remember him or her. If not, I will normally need to see her/him a few more times before he or she can be filed into my donkey brain.

This was a great handicap in my working life especially in a banking line. I was being branded as arrogant or stuck-up especially when I do not acknowledge a person as I cannot certainly recalled having met him or her.

Therefore I have already given up remembering peoples’ names if we are not going to meet again. If we are going to meet frequently I will definitely able to remember him or her later on.

  33. Hi Steven Ng

It is not so nice to know you have the same problem as me.

I know the reason of my problem. My character is quite lonely since I was young. In Singapore, before SHC, I seldom contacted people. That is why I am not used to remember faces and names.

The worse is when there are many people, I prefer listen to talk and make others feel I am as you said – arrogant.

Last ITIG meeting, I sat at a corner, near Peter Lim. Peter was talking about his tablet and some applications, suddenly he stop and asked me: “are we make you feel boring”? Actually, I was listening.

That is the impression I give to others, sigh.

  34. Hello Andrew,

I am Geok Suan, and you sat next to me at the IT meeting on friday while Peter sat opposite us and you were talking to Peter about computer.

I am also not good at remembering names. but I will smile. Anyway, I can’t remember many peopl’s names becos I do not regularly attend meetings.

You can sing so SHCians will know you and will come up to talk to you about you talent in singing. So keep attending the SHC meetings to get to know the members and eventually you’ll remember their names.

    Geok Suan.

  35. a hiccup…

Like looking for a needle in a haystack,
I looked for HL in a crowded food-court.
    “This is bad,” i thought.

A man was approaching the food-court from Yamaha.
“It’s JHowe!” I recognized his cap; I tried to recall.
The man got closer. Alas, it was not JHowe after all!

Back to looking for the needle …
And there was HL buying coffee!
“Hi,HL!” “I thought i was late,” said he.

“Where do we meet?” i asked, waiting to buy a coffee.
“That corner,” HL said, weaving his way there.
A minute later, holding my coffee with care…

I weaved my way to “that corner”.
    Strange. No familiar faces were there;
HL seemed to have disappeared into thin air!

Coffee in hand, standing amidst the seated patrons,
A lost sheep contemplated her fate forlornly,
Till help came in the guise of a slim Japanese lady.

    She knew me but dumbly i looked at her;
And all at once it dawned on me:
“This cool Japanese doll is … Jacque!!”

    Her eyes, now razor sharp, spied a dim corner yonder;
She made a beeline there with a confident air,
And behold! HL and company were all huddled there! :)

    2-ct’s worth

  36. Hi Geok Suan

I remember you, the lady sat next to me in the ITIG meeting.

Thanks for still remember me singing, I thinks that should be in the Beach Night one or two years back. Yes, everybody can sing if they want, I also can but sure not the good one (or may be not so bad lah, haha)

  37. Jassmine #61 – I’ve always enjoyed reading your poems. This one made me LOL. LOL. LOL.
    Quote-

  38. Andrew #57 –

    “Hi Jacqueline
Next time when we met, if I still cannot call out your name, please knock 3 times my head.”

Andrew #57- If we meet again, and you don’t remember my name? I’ll simply shake hands again, and say to you, “HI, I’m jacqueline.” No, no need to “knock head”.

    Cheers,
    Jac

  39. Hew Lee –

Thanks very much for organizing the IT information session.

I’ve received your notes, via email. It was very helpful.

    Thanks a lot, again!

  40. Hi Steven Ng,

Yesterday has tried to google with the phrase “free video downloader”, and downloaded one – “Freemake video downloader”.

To day tried it out, worked – can download video from YouTube, but only in .flv format (for video) or .mp3 format (for audio).

Will try to use the Zamzar website to transfer the downloaded file to another format tomorrow.

    Thanks again for you information

  41. Hi Steven

Can u please provide the link for this free converter ?? I hv been using Zamzar converter and at a lost now that they block this link.

    Thanks

    karen

  42. Hi Steven Ng

Have just try to convert the video file I download yesterday from YouTube (flv format) to avi format using the Zamzar website, worked. As my internet connection is a low-end one, it seems to take me a life-time to upload the video file to Zamzar.

Sure will try other multi-format downloader and the free video converter you mentioned.

    Thanks again for your information.

  43. Hi Karen

Long time no see, how are you.

As mentioned in Steven’s C#56, you can surf with the phrase “free video downloader”. A lot of choices will show and you can try out which one is suitable for you.

As mentioned in Steven’s C#67, you can also surf with the phrase “free video converter” to get a converter to change the video file you get from YouTube from one format to another. (Haven’t try this, will do this afternoon)

  44. Yeung/Young

After the comment , I managed to find the web for the convertion. I asked Becos I tot Steven may hv a specific link/converter that is user friendly to old folk like me meh !!!

Zamzar is very simple n I taught a lot of my fren to use this web
to convert YouTube video to MP3 format.

Thanks for help n hope to meet u soon .

    Karen

  45. Hi Karen

I think Steven (C#54) is using the Firefox browser and make use of some of its add-on/extensions to do the download.

Firefox is a good browser (my son told me), but you have to download, install and learn to use it, a little bit trouble.

I think many of us are missing the time, when we can use Zamzar to download video from YouTube, so convenient and easy, and so many format to choose. Sigh

When can we meet? Hope I can join Sockie’s event, then we can slide together, or you join the next walk, then we can walk together.

Now just can say “See you when we see”.

  46. Yeung

I m using Firefox in my Apple laptop n google on the desktop but Zamzar still my favourite n is fast as well.

Just tried one of the converter – it take more than 5 min to convert just a small file . Begger got no
Choice la since Zamzar is block.
