How we can fulfill the SilverHairsClub’s objective in 2007?

SilverHairsClub’s key objective is to provide a platform for SilverHairs to meet new friends.  Our group is diversed and growing.  Having participate in some of our events, please share with us your thoughts on how can further meet this objective.

If, so far, you have not participated in our activities, I am eagerly looking forward to hearing from you too.

  1. To my mind. all SHC can do is to create the opportunities by organizing meet-n-chat sessions, talentime, pot-luck, D&D, and challenge SHCians to ourselves initiate activities like cycling, walking, dancing with lions in a line & karaoke.

Most, if not all, of the founders and core activists hold jobs and have only so much time at their disposal. Therefore, SHCians will have to respond at the events organized without more coaxing by stepping forward to say hello to and mingle with each other. Interaction has to come from ourselves spontaneously.

The waves might be fascinating and the food, glorious & sumptuous but surely had she turned her head 1 more time she might find us nicer to look at than the sea. And why did he keep so much food in his mouth that impeded his speech and so conveniently said precious little? The name may be pot-luck but the game is interaction and making friends.

And what do we do with the friends made? Pls call them, email them, meet up for a cuppa or to share ideas, business, leisure or otherwise.

(My apologies to butties whom I have not kept in constant contact (my apologies come readily, no demand is needed). For now, my total devotion is to my kid, esp when her mum has custody. But I’ll make time to support SHC events insofar as is impossible).

Last, not least, a word of caution. SHC is a grouping open to all & sundry who have attained 45 & accepted the OB limits. There should be this discernment in us to tell a treat from a trick esp for those who have collected our CPF or need emotional companionship. Thankfully, there has been no unhappy incident (I believe) reported but do please exercise caution.

    G’day !

  2. Oh dearie me, Tim!

I didn’t notice any China babes at our SHC meetings…

So I think that our CPF monies should be quite safe.

No, on second thought, our CPF monies are snuggled in the arms of the unit trusts and insurance fund managers who have promised us that they will remain loyal and be true. But somehow they have managed to spirit away quite a bit of that money and their promises are sadly broken.

Yes, please excercise caution… you can’t just trust anyone these days, especially your bank!

  3. Hi Terence,

Since my retirement in Jan 2002, I have formed by own social groups which consist mainly my ex-colleages, relatives, and friends. Our main communication system is by phone, sms and email.

Our objectives in setting this informal and loose form of social network are as follows:

1 Attending free concerts in NUS, the Esplanade and elsewhere

2 Attending free self-development, motivational, insurance and financial planning and management talks at Intercontinental Singapore at Bugis Junction, NTUC HQ at Bras Basah Road, etc.

3 Monthly makan sessions cum karaoke

4 Regular weekly walks at MacRitchie Forest Reserves

Our social group is called RICH which means Regular Interaction Circle of Harmony. Like SHC, no money is collected and participants will share out equally all expenses incurred for the activity or function. If our SHC members are interested in our RICH activities they can request to be included in our email lists for the respective activities.

My wife, Kristy, and I are brand new members of SHC and we will be attending the forthcoming D & D function.

Wishing all and one a belated Happy and Prosperous Lunar New Year.

    Robert Quek

  4. Hi Robert,

As you meet other members, I am sure there will be some members who will be interested to join RICH. Many SHC members will be interested to meet up with you.

    Terence

  5. Sure, Kenneth, but do give the dragon lasses a bit more time to acclimatise and then, haha….lalalala.

I see unit trusts as a total misnomer. Burned beyond recognition, I hv anythg but trust for them. When the IR is up & running and with vengeance in mind, I will set up a bucket shop with a similar modus operandi : (to investors) honey only wants yr money but for a small fee, I’ll make you a lot of money. Bcos you’re so lucky (see yr winnings thru me), double up to make more money (and double yr fees to me) and I’ll make you more money. (To mr su-ka-tng kor) it’s yr fault that you’re so unlucky but you still hv to pay my fees. When that bloke is done for, there’ll always be a blighter thinking that he’s brighter running to me with more money.

Perhaps, if it fits, SHC and RICH can complement each other. Whatever, it was nice of Robert to share RICH with us, more so in this CNY season as we wish each other more wealth, better health.

  6. Yes, I m interested to join RICH and become “RICH’ too.

RICH in acquring new experiences n friends.

  7. Hi Terence and all,

Just some suggestions, I hope can help to fulfill SHC’s objectives for 2007 :-

    1. Our website need to be more informative and navigational to highlight monthly acitvities. The Headings of the sub-categories can be made larger ,with brighter colors. ( see this website for a contrasting view) http://www.espioneer.com/template.asp?vid=lds

    2. RICH is almost similar to SHC and maybe we can even let them have a Column here in SHC’s websites, and our members can see their monthly acitivities just as one of ours, and similar RICH members can view oru website too. Secondly, can SHC be affiliated members with RICH, so there is no need for registration, after all they do not collect fees either, and vice versa for RICH too ? If this is done, then more groups will benefit, and also more ideas of other new activites can be promoted.

    3. Lastly maybe we may need to set up an interest group of people who have experience to set up a marketing team to make our website, activities and interest group more attractive, appealing ,etc. In a way those who are interested to do marketing can try doing this as a free lance job to gain experience.

Let us hope, more people, or similar groups can join us and make SHC even better without being too commercial or objective orientated thus losing it’s free and easy style.

I just feel that new members and even old members should be able to find what they want and what is going in SHC more readily as what websites are supposed to be, that is provide quick info.

After all, i guess one of SHC’s main objective is to get people connected doing something that can keep their mind, body and emotions happy, and making money how ever little it is, should be secondary, so that friendships can then be made.

Just can’t help sharing what i just experienced after being a guest to a couple in Seremban , where i had a good stay in their Bungalow house in Seremban , good food, 2 good golf games and meeting very nice golfers, just for helping them to find a room for thier son studying in Spore.

Is this not one of our objectives, making good friends across the causeway, hopefully also soon in BKK, Xiamen, Perth ,etc, and being able to stay with friends who welcome us ,where money is not the reason for the invitation ?

Cheers , and hope for an even better year for SHC and thanks once again to the founders of SHC.

    Allrounder

  8. Timely of Allrounder to reiterate what SHC is and shd always be……..free & easy, a comfortable place for friendship to flourish with business & $-making taking a backseat.

Talking abt Seremban, thot it was horrendous to read of that poor chap who kena hacked 3 times outside of what shd hv been a very safe place. So what can we say here? Like gu loong liked to remind in his gongfu novels, the safest place is the most dangerous and yr loved ones may actually turn out to be yr most bitter enemies. So if that chap had stayed with a friend & not a relative, he might live today to enjoy paying 7% GS 2morow. Spouses……………safe? (haha, must hv ruffled a feather or 2 here but I aint going to give anyone an appollo gee ride hor)

  9. Yes we must be careful in the way we talk or do things lest we offend people and still think its a joke then no nice.

Those not so rich got no worry ,like me a poor chap so no worry abt china jaws ladies hehe

  10. Hi Terence, Tim, Yew Kwong & Guest,

Thank you for accepting the concept of RICH and providing us with the encouragement & motivation to carry on. I hope that RICH can be a Sub-Group ( hopefully, one of the many Special Interest Groups)of SHC. In this way, I am sure SHC will grow from strength to strength.

Guest’s suggestion that RICH have a column in SHC’s websites is a wonderful one. I will promote SHC and its programmes to our RICH members and perhaps invite them to join as members too. By the way Terence, how do I address Guest when I meet up with him? I would like to address him/her using the real name.

You are most welcomed Yew Kwong to RICH and its activities. We are now part of one big happy and carefree family.

My wife, Kristy, and I look forward to meeting all of you at our D & D function.

    Robert Quek (RICH)

  11. Hi Robert

I especially like the concerts/performing arts and talks (financial/health) part of RICH as these are also my interests.

I am looking forward to attending some of the performances and events at the NUS Festival of Arts in March. Unfortunately, by the time we meet at our D&D on 24 March, the festival would be over.

    Joy

  12. I do not understand why this guy must always sign up as “guest”? i guess he has overstayed his welcome. So he better change his name to Allrounder which would be most appropriate. And also that we can sue him if he says something defamatory…
    Hahaha!

  13. RICH’s meetings in freebie concerts and financial talks is right up my alley.
Local flavor at the Botanics Symphony is on tomorrow …is anybody going??
Maybe something can be worked out for the 25 {day after the D&D} March at the same venue for the Jazz session by the Thompson Big Band.
I agree with Tim’s opinion of the so-called financial advisers and bankers. They usually come out with spiels that is only to their benefit and advantage. The thing is to educate ourselves by attending talks and discussions among ourselves, the ordinary laymen.
    Am interested in joining in.
Let me know if I can fit in.

  14. Hi Joy,

If you could give me your email address, I could inform you of the concerts when they are on. My wife and I and other friends could meet up with you for a drink 30 minutes before the concerts. There is no need to wait until our DnD.

    Hi LH Jie,
We are interested in the performances at Botanic Gardens but not tomorrow. We also used to listen to the Jazz Session by the Thompson Big Band at Marine Cove but we have lost touch of them. Please let us know when they are performing.

With regard to financial advisers and bankers, perhaps we could msn to each other to share our experiences. Others who are interested to join in the discussion are also most welcomed. You could give me your email address and I will invite you into msn for our discussion.

  15. Hi, I’m Andrew. Sorry I login as a guest, because I haven’t register yet (without a password).

I think the SHC have done very well in providing a platform for our SilverHairs to meet new friends

For me, I’m not active; don’t like talking and am quite boring. After I immigrated to Singapore, I enjoyed my life very much with my family that make me like to stay at home all the time and nearly isolated from the outside world. That’s why I did not adapt to the SHC well at the very beginning.

But after I took part in some SHC activities – Walking; Cycling, and the Line Dance (recently), I found that I become more open and happy.

So, I’d like to take this opportunity to express my thanks and grateful to all the organizers and their assistances of the activities:

Walking Group – Charles, Veronica Wong, Christina Chan.
Cycling Group – Yew Kwong, Lily Ho, Jade Phua (also thanks for your e-mails)
Line Dance – Lily Ho, Ronald Lee, Oi Cheng

Please keep it up (sorry I just say but don’t give any help)!

  16. Hi Guest,

I hope you can sign in as a members soon.

I guess you are well aware of the objectives of the SilverHairsClub. thanks for all the good feedback. Do join us, and that is the best way of meeting fellow SilverHairs.

Hope to meet you some day, although you dont have a user name.

    Terence Seah

  17. Robert,

I encourage you to continue keeping the SilverHairsClub informed of what RICH is doing. And, I would encourage the RICH group to join SHC if they meet the club requirement.

    Terence

  18. Hi Joy: Thanks for your email address. I’ll keep you posted.

Hi William (ref: Guest): Thank you for sharing your name.

    Hi Terence,
    Thank you for your encouragement.

    Robert
    (RICH)

  19. Hahaha, good Kenneth, yes, how can anyone file a dafamatory suit vs an “allrounder”? If it means a rotund, there’re many who fit the bill’. If it means a jack of all trades, that too we can find many out there. Seriously, “guest” shd be used by those who want to feel the water but once he/she wants to be part of this motley family, then he/she shd stand up and be identified.

Thanks, Jie Jie, for standing on my side & not on my toes. It’s funny that, usually, when we dont need banks, they come banging our doors with offers impossible to resist but when we need them, their doors they slam. No wonder why many want to open banks……….bankers hv this bit more choice than borrowers.

Am never comfortable with the word ‘sub”….. “ubservient”, “submissive”, “sub-standard”, “subordinate” “hum hum sub sub”……..so there’s no reason for RICH to be anyone’s sub-group, or vice versa, but we can all work together if there’s a common objective i.e. to give the silverhairs esteeem & a deserved status.
