Improving the SilverHairsClub website

We have received a number of suggestions and ideas on how to improve the SHC website.

Some of the complaints include difficult to register, the password never come, the text colours are too light, very difficult to find a posting, and not beautiful.

Some of the latest recommendations include taking out the "Guest" user and closing this website, password control to only registered members.

Tell us the type of changes you would like to see on this website, give us your recommendations.  We are taking orders now, on this website.  Give us a whack.  Order close 30 June 2007.

  1. Somewhat bemused by the “complaints”.

Difficult to register – lucky me, no prob with that & my password came almost instantenously. The text colours are too light – ok, fair enough, at our age, darker fonts helps reading. Very difficult to find a posting ? Can it be bcos not many of us post? Not beautiful? Haha, beauty in the eyes of the beholder lah so even if Terence isnt so beautiful, he’s a ravishing handsome.

Yes, “recommendations” sounds more cool than “complaints”. I join those who recommend taking out the “Guest” user – we dont need gas/smoke to hide an identity. But closing this website is like closing shop so how can?

Perhaps, we cd ease communication one member wishes to have with another, such that by clicking on the nick of the target member, it establishes a direct email link straightaway.

Also, we sometimes need to edit b4 posting, smthg we cant do at the moment.

  2. Firstly, we must give credit to those members who construct the silverhclub website.

However, there is STILL MORE ROOM for improvement.

Frankly, I truly HATED the name
SILVERHAIR Club name bcos it made us sound so OLD and I almost turned off when I first saw the website.

However, upon reading the INTERESTING monthly activities , I realised that I found the IDEAL platform for socialising.

Why not post to our our members’for their suggestion for a more APPEALING name ?

Surely with a pool of 3000 members, the chances of receiving a more appealing name
    is NOT a Problem.

Don’t underestimate the “POWER” of our members.

Some of the complaints include difficult to register, the password never come, the text colours are too light, very difficult to find a posting, and not beautiful ( AND FAR TOO DULL.) I fully agreed with this comments.

Some of the latest recommendations include taking out the “Guest” user and closing this website, password control to only registered members.

( YES I fully support this too.)

Silverhairs Club is EXCLUSIVE and so no guests should be entertained.
    (STRICTLY for MEMBERS only )

  3. One more improvement, I CANNOT find a link where I can change your password to my own easily remembered password similar to that of an ATM machine.

This is an area of concern that you should look into.

Thanks and appreciated the effort put in by the silverhairclub admin website comm members

  4. Hi all,

We need to invite more free forum but of course along SHC Guidelines. Many feel they want to comment or just joke freely but also feel, they can be more comfortable under a known identity, a registered known identity, not open to non-members.

I for one, am registering ‘Allrounder’ and i am sure most, should know who i am by now.

So let us create a free for all Daily Column for comments or jokes, etc , as i heard many have enjoyed Tim’s comments and jokes.

Though i enjoyed Tim’s comments, i would rather have his jokes as an editorial in the ‘Free Daily Column, like an editorial comment’ so as not detract or distract the Intended column purpose. Sometimes people may enjoy the joke so much ,they may forgot what they want to say in the first place or feel, their comment maybe taken in the wrong context.

So let Tim have a ‘Lat’ or ‘Snoopy’ column that others can also join in ? Maybe call it “Tim’s Sum” for Tim’s summaries as he seems to do quite a bit of that,in a clever ,amusing and funny way too.

    Cheers
    Allrounder

  5. After saying nice of me, you actually wanna put me in a cage afterall? Hahaha, you really very the allrounder, man !

    Ok, back to serious biz.

I note Steven’s point. However, personally, I am ready to see and acknowldge myself as a silverhair. Silver is distinguished and symbolises seniority. It becomes ambiguous, say, if we call ourselves the BotakClub bcos babies too are born botak, but nvr with silverhairs (unless it’s an unfortunate congenital problem).

Let’s see what other names can one give to a spade.

  6. Hey!

You guys are supponsed to come up with suggestions and “recommendations”. So let’s have some:

    SHC = Some hairy creatures
    Sane handsome citizens
    Somewhat hopeless causes
    Shockingly hard-up case
    (Pick one or two)

    No more “guests” pleeeze!
Allrounder please make it your last post as “Guest”!

Moderator should continue to vet and censor all unhealthy posts i.e. dull, unfunny and polite comments.

Finally, get some 17-year-old to redesign website so that we can be more hip Ah Peks and Ah Sohs.

  7. When I first wanted to join in an event in SHC, I find that there is no link to the “Participate” link where one can leave his/her name and check more details reg payment and so on.

I found out how it was done by looking at other comments . And that is how they inform the admin that they want to join for eg SHC D and D.

Wouldn’t it be better if it is better linked to participtn instead of to comments.

Rather CONFUSING when I wanted to register for D and D for the 1st.time. What more for beginners like me ?
    Steven

  8. I note Steven’s point. However, personally, I am ready to see and acknowldge myself as a silverhair. Silver is distinguished and symbolises seniority.

Well Tim , do we need to advertise ourselves as a silverhair grp when it is so OBVIOUS to everyone that most of us had silverhairs , some even with no hair or some sporting the “bird nest” head.

Sorry,do not take offence but I am speaking the truth.

By having a more appealing name does not mean we can DENY the fact that we are AGING day by day. Phaps another name to reflect our seniority
    status.

It becomes ambiguous, say, if we call ourselves the BotakClub ??? EVEN WORSE NAME than the SHC name ) bcos babies too are born botak, but nvr with silverhairs ( TOTALLY IRRELEVANT – We are talking abt adults not babies.)So don’to stray out of focus.

Phaps Robert and Kristy could help us. They had their organisation called the RICH grp which means
RI Circle of Harmony. Can’t remember what the 1st. two initials stand for.
Robert, could you pls. enlighten us the actual meaning of the RICH grp that both Kristy and you had concocted.

  9. Please include a hyperlink
for Pet Lovers,Gardening Lovers to connect with other members with similar interests at your extreme right hand column

Thanks and looking forward to this improvement to our new website.

    Steven

  10. Steven,

We have considered a Pet Lovers or Garden lovers corner before. It’s a good idea.

Please keep the Pet lover discussion going on, and we shall set up the Pet Lovers corner.

Stay on the scene, and lead on.

  11. You guys – Tim, Steven (are there 2 Stevens? see comment no.8), Ronald Wi, Kenneth & Terence – having fun? Seems only the boys are interested in this subject. Here are my 2 cents’ worth :

    1) Remove “Guest” user – fully agree.
    2) Bigger darker fonts – helpful.
    3) Editing b4 posting – already available except for posting of comments.
    4) Change password – already available.
    5) Click to ‘participate’ – helpful & expeditious.
    6) Click to communicate with another member – not necessary.
    7) “Sliver Hair” – hate it.
    8) Moderator to vet & censor – agree (especially the dull, unfunny, uninteresting, useless, uninformative or boring posting).

  12. Hahaha, Kenneth, if any of yr suggestions is adopted to replace “Silverhairs Club”, i will cut my finger at tao yuan and invite you to be my 2nd brudder after sumokong. Btw, do you know where he is presently, after coming home with the scriptures?

Steven, in any healthy discussion, it’s never adversarial so no worry. We can agree to disagree.

It’s one thing to call ourselves effortlessly by the obvious – Silverhairs – it’s another to find a need to advertise it. Sure enough, we can be called “Supreme High Commanders” as some military junta do to satiate themselves after a coup. But what has this appealing name got to do with the fact that the principal criterion for SHC eligibility is an age no younger than 45, by which time most of us are spotting silverhairs (unless play cheat, go dye your hair green for envy)? Nay, my baby illustration is to drive the nail hard & deep to bring home the stark truth.

That we are called Silverhairs have attracted Steven and 3,000 more members and the number is growing. Interesting. And pertinent.

Finally, Lily, you very the fierce hor. Hehe, what’re you holding behind yr back? A rollerpin?

  13. No doubt, we are Silverhairs but I do not wish to be further reminded with the name. Initially, I am hesitated to join. Wondering, whether I will be label as a group of heartlanders associated with Ah Sohs wearing pyjamas and Ah Peks never use Gatsby one, at Tiong Bahru and Bukit Merah.

Yes, the current site colors are dull. Can we make our golden years a more vibrant, witty and entertaining one. A name associates with a new lease of lifestyle after 45s, in addition to changing the site colors to a more colorful one that reflects a group of funky and techie Ah Sohs and Ah Peks.

We appreciate the founders (one of them is Terence) have been so supportive and provide this platform for people from all walks of life with different characters, personalities –some serious, some jovial by nature to come into this Living Room to chat. One man’s meat is another man’s poison. It is good to have a Mr Bean column for all those who enjoy daily “Tim Sum “. (Ah Liu papa is the chef). Laughter is the best exercise for your facial muscle and can keep you young at heart (dun laugh too hard lah, otherwise plenty of railway tracks).

SHC is a FREE club. To revamp the functionality of the site and enhancement of features need funding. There will be a lon…..g ‘wish list’. Keep to basic minimum, user friendly, easy navigation and security.

    :)) Rene

  14. I have been reading all your responses and feedback on How to improve our website? High on the list is the name of this club. There had been similar requests earlier to change it to GoldenHair, Young Ones, etc.

Let’s keep the discussion on the name going. Feedback from other SilverHairs.

The name SilverHairsClub is pretty well-known in certain circles in Singapore.

    Terence

  15. 1 ) Hi Terence,

Based on the report of the survey made by SHC it listed
abt 15% of 3 000 SHC are RETIREES,ie abt 450 members and they have MORE time at hand .

I appreciate if you can have a hyperlink for RETIREES in the right hand column so that retirees CAN CONNECT one another to share their experiences and other simiar interests , health matters, hobbies etc……

    2 ) Hi Renee,
You wrote :- ( You guys – Tim, Steven (are there 2 Stevens? )

No, Renee you are NOT seeing double. The Steven happens to be the same Steven but posted his comments at different times.
    Chia boh !

    Steven

  16. The plain and simple site looks just nice. No need for eye-popping fonts, garish colours and complicated layouts.

Only one request – a link “Today’s Comments” which would contain the new comments, indicating reference to which post, from 12am to 12 midnight each day. Makes it easier to find and read new comments for the day.

New posts would already be at the top, so that is fine.

    Just a thought…

  17. Hi Terrence

Since all the SHCians were young once, i think it will be nice to name our club The Young Once.
I agreed with Joy that we have a column for the the latest comments bcos its rather tedious to keeping scolling down to chk 4 new postings. In fact, I enjoying reading the postings especially from ah liu –
you must be a lau hock kien hor!

    veron

  18. Rene kena yellow card liao. Heee, by calling ah liu “papa”, you hv linked him to a very famous party (& grading the party with an “A” somemore…..clever gal).

Frankly, the only party worth looking forward to is our own SHC D&D party which I’ll grade it as an A*Star, with flip-yoke & leeway-link both coming to continue their exciting d’bed.

I am with both Joy & Veron on making it easy to find & read the latest postings if this doesnt create too much work for our IT friends…thanks !

Calling ourselves golden-hairs…..i like that bcos at long last my primate butties’ll get their due recognition. And “Young Once” shd pip “Young Ones” after popping heads at the foto finish.

Me…..a lau hock kien? Me….a lau hor, can? Prefer to be a tiger bcos only this animal can do the original feted show.

  19. l am a member but l can nv log on as they alway say my password is wrong.so l hv no choice in order to write a post l hv to log on as guest.

Hw abt “young at heart”, or “Life after 45”

Take a look at the website http://www.stomp.com.sg where they hv individual topic for members to log on interact or voice out.of course we cant afford something so big but having individual topic will be good so members can go straight to topic not having to go thru whole page to go to the topic they want.
    we can hv meetupouting,kopi chit chat,pet,ktv,line dancing,cooking,business,welcome newbies,etc

  20. Rene ah Rene, you very the nasi lemak alamak, man. Why offer ah liu pek an appollo gee spin? ah pek kena spin sure groggy one. Anyhow, calling ah liu “papa” is anytime better than calling him “mama”. Tata.

  21. Alamak! liu san, I don’t like to eat nasi lemak lah.
Just enroll in the “University of Society”. First lesson is “Apology”. Those silverhairs who come into this Living Room for daily “Tim Sum” already know “this chef” ah is a Multi talented tasker (normally award to gals only leh) So, not surprise that you can wear more than two hats i.e. Ah Liu Baba’s papa, mama, sing like Thai pop queen Tata, dance the salsa, Screen any gate crasher at D & D like teletubby lala.. Venture into Chomp Chomp and bookie business gaga) Dada….haha

  22. Hi Steven, Please refer to your comment (No. 8) above regarding the full name for RICH. It means: Regular Interaction Circle of Harmony. Thank you for publicising for us.

With regard to the name of the club, the committee may like to consider either GoldenHair Club (GHC), GoldenYears Club(GYC) or SeniorCitizens Club (SCC). Perhaps a pool of suggeested names could be collected for the members to choose by means of referendum.

To Terence, May I know how I could create a category for a new posting. I would like to post our regular Tuesday walks at MacRitchie which will be resumed in April.

    Robert Quek

  23. I would like to say something about club’s name. The founders and myself accepted the name when we launched the club.

We looked at the age group; and decided on 45 and up. We went over a few names. Then, we search the website. And, SilverHairsClub was available.

I was told, in English, there is no such thing as Hairs. Only hair, single or plural.

The name SilverHairsClub has caught on. So has the abbreviation SHC. I prefer to stay with SilverHairsClub.

But, if you think the name should change, don’t give up. Keep trying.

    Terence Seah

  24. Yes, I too was told that “hair” is used in both the singular & plural.

But over the years and as the language evolves itself, I hv come across many instances when “hairs” is used to describe different types of hair such as goat’s hair, horse hair, my hair….so many hairs were found after a fight among these animals. Similary, many different breeds of “fish” come together, we have “fishes”. Too for “furniture”, “machinery”.

“SilverHairsClub” is unique and I agree, the name has caught on. But always the democratic and consultative he than weighing in as the founder, Terence greets differing opinions with a grin and will never treat the dissenter as another Mr Bean.

  25. “Guest” has been used by “Allrounder” and a few other members. I am quite tempted to take out the Guest feature, as many SHC members have expressed we should take away anoynomous persons.

There has been no misuse todate.

But, there is the element of fun and surprise. The Guest idea came from members. It aims to to help the new members and the naughty hearts get started.

Username is “Guest” and password is “guest”. “Guest” cannot be used for registration of activities.
