MONTHLY WALK – APRIL 07

Date: 14th April 2007 (Saturday)

Walking Trial: Ulu Pandan Park Connector

  • Start Time:  4.30pm
  • Meeting point: Ghim Moh Block 12A

Getting there:

  • by MRT – Buona Vista MRT Station: pass Control station, straight down the next escalator.  Then turn left walk thro’ the tunnel, it is sheltered all the way to Ghim Moh Block 12A.
  • by Bus – Bus service nos. 92, 100 & 111.  After the bus turns into Ghim Moh, alight immediately, walk against traffic flow and Block 12A is on the opposite side.

Introduction: The Park Connector Network is an island-wide network of linear open spaces that link up major parks, nature sites and housing estates in Singapore. When the entire network is completed, it will form a green network, spanning over 300 km across the whole island, making it convenient to travel from park to park.

For this month, we have selected one of the park connectors ie., the Ulu Pandan Park Connector.  It is about 9 km long. The T-shaped park connector has three end points: at Bukit Batok East Avenue 2 (near Bukit Batok Nature Park), the Ayer Rajah Expressway near Pandan Reservoir, and Commonwealth Ave West near the Buona Vista MRT station.  Stretches of the Ulu Pandan Park Connector are fringed with lush landscaping beside a canal, while other areas have been left virtually untouched.

No worries, we are not walking the entire  9km  {smile}.  Be assured it is a leisure walk.

The track is paved, making it an enjoyable and safe walk or even for cycling.  Do look up among the trees and shrubs, you would probably see colorful birds and butterflies flitting among the greenery.

Recently, someone had written to the ‘Forum’ (as Ghim Moh flats are to be redeveloped soon) commented: why disturbed…the connector has served as a tranquil retreat for a great many neighboring residents…to start building on such a piece of well-used, mature green lung would be a shame.

So, let’s get our feet on it before another stretch of lush greenery is gone!

We shall curtail our walk at Clementi Avenue 4.  For the growling tummies, at the nearby blocks of flats are some coffee-shops or walk another 10mins to the Central where there are more selection of food at both coffee-shops and food centre.  I heard there is also a small joint serving Japanese food (near NTUC).  The Clementi MRT station is in the vicinity.

Note: For those who wish to continue the walk, you may proceed all the way to Jurong East.

See you there!   Stay cool!emoticon

  1. Dear SHCs walkist,

a sweet person pointed out a typo error.
It should read as “Walking Trail” but
if you didnt notice the error, yes! it might be, it could be a “trial” walk for those who ‘never’like to walk… (previously you can count me in, I dun like to walk esp I could not even complete any shopping mall, but with Nature walk, it is simply tranquil!). So, come on down for a trial!

  2. Yes indeed.

The trail may be the 9-km Ulu Pandan Connector but the manner/objective of the walk could be a trial, like they do with newly imported thoroughbreds which are put on barrier trials and time trials. In this instance, walkists may try (as in a trial) to push their maximum limit & challenge the entire 9-km or try a mere 9 metre and start ogling. To each his own.

The scourge of the 2-time rapist/sodomist at Ulu Pandan is now in jail so it’s a lot safer, esp with the muscled Charles as the protector and probably tall Steven and his short dog patrolling the full length of the trail, even if we were to wear Terence’s weeny teeny pokka dot bikini, we’ll still be very safe…..

  3. Hi Christina,

I am Robert Quek and a new member of SHC. My wife, Kristy, and I were at our last D & D and we enjoyed ourselves very much. It was Steven Chan who introduced us to the Club.

It is a good idea to have a monthly walk. However, we are unable to join this month’s walk with all of you as we have to attend a function. But we will definitely join all of you in the May walk.

I have discussed with Terence about the activities that we are organising for
SHC members such as free talks, free concerts and regular weekly walks at MacRitchie Reservoir. I hope you don’t mind that we invite members to our weekly social walks on Tuesdays at 5 pm and Saturdays at 9 am. I hope you will welcome our weekly walks as complimentary to your monthly walks. I feel that both types of walk will serve the needs of our SHC members.

Please rest assured that if our two walks coincide on the same day, I will withdraw our weekly walk for that day.

    Robert Quek

  4. Hi Robert,

With you, Kristy and the friends in RICH, we are one bigger, happier family of silverhairs and we can only thank you for making this happen. RICH and SHC will complement, and when the occasion arises, supplement each other.

Walking is a very healthy non-exertive exercise and there can be a lot of sharings even gossipings while walking. So, the more walks we can organise, the better, vitiated perhaps only by the weather.

I am sure Christina, a wonderfully affable & vivacious lady herself, wont have any objection to more walks.

  5. Hi Christina, I will be joining the walk on 14 Apr.

It’s also very kind of Richard to invite us SHC members to join his weekly walks.

  6. Hi Robert,Kristy and other Johnny Walkers,

I was very HAPPY to hear that R.I.C.H. which stands for( Regular Interaction Circle of Harmony )and SHC walkers are now slowly integrating as a whole and also the encouraging remarks from Ah Tim Kor.

    EXCELLENT idea and MISSION
    POSSIBLE.

Do get in touch with Charles Wee too. He is a
    REGULAR AMK,MCR Resvr.
and Bishan Park weekly walker with his buddies.

Heard from one SHC member that Terence had HUGE MUSCULAR hairy ? legs.?
Yet to see becos he always wear long pants.

Judging from this fact, I believe he is an AVID walker as well.Am I right ?

Robert, perhaps, you can discuss your timetable with Charles how to accomodate one another’s walk so that you can have instead of two to increase to 3 or more daily walks per week in addition to our monthly SHC walk to PROMOTE a HEALTY LIFESTYLE for both RICH n SHC members as well.

I am truly convinced you are a very GOOD leader in this walking exercise as you have been doing your regular daily walks for 5 yrs or more.
    And you Walk the Talk.

As for me, my “cowboy” would give me a WAKE UP call up at 6.30 a.m. daily and it is time for him to bring me for my regular walks and most important both of us enjoy our walks.
Strangely, at home,he sleeps like a PIG most of the time becos he is BORED, nothing to do BUT in the open fields he is ALIVE as a dragon.

Once in a while ,if time permits I would also like to join you all.

    Have FUN, and pls.drag
Tim Ah Liu along as he leads an UNHEALTHY Lifestyle SMOKING himself to his ( I.T.E. )

I would then SADLY missed all his HOKKIEN and Cantonese karaoke songs and his humourous jokes on our
    SHC website.

    Steven Chan

  7. Hi Steven,

I would like to thank everyone including you, Steven, for their acceptance and encouragement of RICH. Steven, thank you for your compliments although I must admit somewhat superfluous.

I have been able to maintain and sustain the activities of RICH since my retirement because of my philosophy and approach in the way I implement my programmes.

We must let things grow and evolve naturally and at a comfortable pace and not be too ambitious, taking in more than we can chew. I am more than satisfied that RICH has grown slowly and steadily.

However, I want to stress that I do not focus on the activity itself which is of course important but I focus more on people. I merely use activities as a means of getting in touch with people, maintaining old friendship while making new ones.

Yes, Steven, we will have fun and we hope all our friends and members in SHC will also join and share together in the fun in the midst of all the hustle and bustle of our hectic life.

Thank you Mary for your kind support too. By the way I am Robert, not Richard (Smile!)

    With Loving Kindness,

    Robert & Kristy Quek

  8. So, Steven, am I Ah Tim Kor or Tim Ah Liu? If you can stutter over a name, how can I trust you that “Terence had HUGE MUSCULAR hairy legs” and “he always wear (sic) no pants. “? I bet my last $ that he does wear pants at least once in a while and at worst, his legs are outside his pants.

Fact that you can really give bright walk ideas from the by-line does suggest to me that you do enjoy talking & walking. So may I do you a favour & put yr prowess to good use………….. you can walk in & out of the botanical gdns to orchard rd and buy us food/drinks whenever we hv a craving and thereby, very gentlemanly, relieve us from lugging the same there . Thank you. Sure, yr cowboy can follow you and walk the talk with you as you both happily do the dog talk. We can do without a dog turning into a dragon in open field, and then cannot turn back to a dog again.

Steven, you’re my natural cutie-sweetie. I almost fell off my chair when you, in all innocence, asked to see the mole on the tip of my middle finger at the D&D. Honestly, it’ll be a morose tim without you. And your dog that can change into a dragon.

  9. Hello Robert & Kristy… met you guys in your car{smile}. Thanks very much for the lift.
The silence is unintended as I am very busy recently, just logged in now & read some of the postings.

After meeting you, I have told Terence & Charles about you & R.I.C.H. We SHC welcome all healthy activities and we welcome you to post them. I’ll send you a personal email later.

We appreciate your understanding as you had said it “if our two walks coincide on the same day, I will withdraw our weekly walk for that day”. Thanks!

  10. Hi Chris and all walkists!

I’ll be joining the walk this Saturday. And, if you’re thinking whether this guy will turn up at all… rest assured, he’ll make it!

Hey, may I say that it’s very unfair to make comments about our great leader, Terence.
I, for one, know that he cannot walk very far and very fast without panting. So he has his pants, whether they are long or short.

And we can have singing while we walk: oldies, karaoke, hokkien peng, whatever. It’ll be so much more acceptable than having some puffing billy, I mean puffing Timmy blowing his pollution our way.

So, on that note, see all of you this Saturday!

  11. Hahaha, Kenneth, at long long last, you hv emerged unscathed & in yr elements again.

Well, well, I know of only 2 great leaders – the kims. So for Terence to become another great needle, we’ll hv to pain him red, with or without his pants on.

Me love to join you folks for the walk but having made a promise to Yew Kwong to carry & deliver computers this 14/4, will make that my priority.

God willing, will coax him to deliver the computers at ghim moh so that we can walk together and you too can help carry the computers…..you’ll remember that as a more meaninmgful walk that benefits the poor, esp when lately there has been so much magnanimous talk of great leaders, small spiders and green panthers hissing with envy.

  12. AAArrrghh!

I have hurt my back AGAIN!! And cannot make it to the walk today! It seems that every time I plan to attend a walk, something happens!

Well, next time then… I’m planning to attend the 29th event at the Botanics though.
Oops… better not say anything more.

    Sorry, Chris
