Monthly walk: 13th October 2007, Culmination

Greetings to all SHC members,

Our monthly walks for 2007 were conducted on the 2nd Saturday of each month, except February. It has been our pleasure to share some new as well as challenging routes this year.  We are delighted that many of you have enjoyed these trails.

As year end draws nearer by the day, let’s culminate this year’s monthly walks with yet another nostaligic walk, a journey through time, perhaps.

Majestic trees are the natural heritage of our Island.  They serves as important green landmarks of our Tropical Garden city.  Some trees take more than hundreds of years to mature.  The world’s largest rainforest is in the Amazon River basin, BUT the oldest rainforests are found in Singapore! and Malaysia.

That’s ,,, our Botanic Gardens! a dynamic and living monument.  The Gardens at its present site was founded in 1859.  It has come a long way evolving into a leading equatorial botanic garden of 52 hectares.  Today, the Gardens, which is more than a hundred-years old is a "star" visitors’ attraction!

It seems like yesterday, our walk at the Singapore Botanic Gardens but, as I scrolled through the past walks, it was rather a long way back…..Sept06.  Some had then, requested to take the trail again. Though many months late, here it is, to fulfill certain wish!

Come, Be Enchanted by our Gardens…..’lights off’ at midnight.  emoticon

Start Time: 4.15pm

Duration: approx 2.5 to 3 hours.

Date: 13 October 2007 (Saturday)

Meeting Point: Botanic Gardens @ Tanglin Gate, one of the major entrance. At the junction of Holland/Napier/Cluny Roads(traffic lights).

Getting there: by Buses via Holland Road: SBS  7, 105, 123, 174 and SMRT  75, 77, 106.  Alight at the bus-stop at the after US Embassy (after Tanglin Mall) OR if you are coming from the opposite direction, alight at Gleneagles.

Car Park Facilities: at Singapore Botanic Gardens’ Visitor Centre, Tanglin Gate and Public Parking along Tyersall Avenue.  Standard fees apply.

Within the Gardens, there is the Taman Serasi Foodcourt; the Halia Restaurant at the Ginger Garden (was told that it serves good food at a price) or head towards Orchard Road for dinner and to chill out.

Look forward to seeing you at this Last Walk of the Year.

Register here.

Need clarification, drop me an email : chrischan5575@yahoo.com

Till then………Stay cool!  Be cool!     emoticon

  1. Hi Christina,

Thanks for organising another ‘walking down memory lane’…despite the changes in these places over the years scenes of yesteryear still lingers on…remember we are YOUNG ONCE (Cliff Richard The Youngs Ones – one of my favourite song from him)…I’ll be there if no important issues pop up…Cheers!

    J.C.

  2. Chris
This time I hope to be able to join the walk at the Botanical Gardens which I have not been there for umpteen years.
Is the entrance that you mentioned is just at the corner along Holland Road going towards Gleneagles Hospital?

  3. Wow! Christina,

Another exciting and interesting walk, I am definitely going. Thanks for organising all the walks, it is indeed very enjoyable and energising :)

    Ah Nee

  4. hi Christina,

….Is Meeting Point: Botanic Gardens @ Tanglin Gate, one of the major entrance. At the junction of Holland/Napier/Cluny Roads(traffic lights).

Is it the entrance close to Gleanagles Hospital?

    Steven

  5. Hi Steven
I asked the same question too. May I know how are you going there? Is there ample car parks?

I would think its the right gate, as you travel along holland road before gleneagles hospital.

    Jane

  6. aiyo StevenC, you go everywhere, for sure u know.

JaneY, thought I replied via email earlier. Anyway, both of u’ve got it right, no worrries.

I had rushed out the posting in the wee hours as these 2 days working till past 2am…going zzzz Appreciate all the early registration. It shall be an interesting walk, as I shall be providing some insights. Look forward to more members’ participation.

  7. Hi Christina,

There are a few entrances to Botanical Gdns.

You still have not replied my question.

Is it the one we meet at the entrance near Gleneagles hospital ?

Pls. reply.becos Bot. gdns is a HUGE place.

    Thanks
    Steven

  8. Hi Steven

It was stated above in the post by Christina:

Meeting Point: Botanic Gardens @ Tanglin Gate, one of the major entrance. At the junction of Holland/Napier/Cluny Roads(traffic lights).

This is main gate along side the Gleneagles Hospital. Hope this helps.

    Cheerio,
    Susan

  9. Hi Suzhang,

That helps a lot. I am not good at road names. And had not been to Bot.Gdns for a long time.

The other time we were there the taxi driver took us to another entrance where tourist buses passengers can alight from there.

    Thanks Steven

  10. Hi Christina,

Yes, it’s a long time since I last visited the botanic gardens and it definitely would be fun to join you all for the walk. I will make out my calendar for this event. Pls count me in.

    Cheers,
    YL.

  11. Hi Christina

Have a while not visit the website, and I think I miss your posting in my last visit. This result a late response. Sorry.

    Please count me in. Thanks

  12. Dear StevenC…replied you already see #15 : “both of u’ve got it right, no worrries”
From Clementi, take SBS #7 it stops right in front of Gleaneagles, need not take taxi lah.

For those who take the MRT; from Orchard Stn exit towards Orchard Boulevard Road, then take the relevant buses as had indicated in this post, alight after Tanglin Mall, should be 4th bus stop.
Alternatively, start the walk from the MRT to Tanglin Gate, no kidding, I do so sometimes, less than half-hour walk :D

  13. Dear Andrew, we know we share 1 good principle.. “we do what we say and what we say, we shall do”. I know you will come, no apology needed, even if you can’t, I know you would have good reason. Appreciate you take time to register; c U! :D
ps: need slumber now, shall continue chat thru email .,,

  14. Hi Christina

Just saw the comment from Lily, I’ve to attend a briefing of our Korea trip on 13 Oct. @ 4pm

So, I cannot join the walk of BG. Sorry

  15. Dear All,
I have noted your registrations, very happy you can join us. :D
Whether you have been to BG recently or long ago, be assured there are things I mean plants u never noticed.
It shall be an interesting walk; besides I will also share jus a wee bit on the evolution “of Plants” naturally. Even those who had joined us in Sep06, you will be energized (as Lee Ah Nee said)& once again charmed by our very own Gardens! ;;)

  16. GraceK…. sure join us, but u didnt tell me you’re the apprentice of David Copperfield!? Even himself needs some years to practice each of his skills le — to be at the same place at the same time… sure or not?
Suggest u ask LilyH: possible to change the date & time of the briefing for the Korea trip? much easier and definite.. :D
ps: btw, have u got the new CD ‘I see grace’…it is beautiful! I m listening to it now. Ooooh gotta get ready for my morning walk.. c u at the dance 2nite.

  17. Hi AndrewY: now there’s GraceK… both of u ask dear LilyH… all the best. Otherwise, I wonder when will I see u again, next year seems forever ;(

  18. Arrrhhhhhhhhhhuh………”count on” and “count in” not quite the same leh………count me in as a participant and also count on me to provide the sedan chair if you refuse to walk………….

  19. Tim, count on me Singapore…sing a song of sixpence a pocket full of rye,…, the king was in his countin-g house, countin-g out his money, the queen was in the parlour baking bread and honey, the maid was in the garden hanging out the clothes, down came a black bird and pecked off her nose.

Tim, if you will carry me in the sedan chair, I will be there. One person how to carry leh…

  20. Hi Christina

I dun make the rule, only suggestion. Since the group of us are being invited to a lunch party that will end at 3pm, I merely suggested that we go from there to the travel office for the briefing. Those who cannot make it can always make arrangement to go another time. So Grace and Andrew, please feel free to change plan.

  21. Sorry Christina

Wah piang, a friend who read my comment here said that I sounded rude. So I wish to clarify myself lah. I am just too direct and to the point, please dun take it as an intention to offend hor. Andrew & Grace, please go ahead for your walk, just let the travel agent know when you will go for the briefing ok.?

  22. Pong cha cha Pong cha cha (backward steps hor) ….Dear Christina,

“I see Grace” is probably the best CD amongst all the cds sold. Truly a great blessing. Played thru’out the day and humming thru’out the night, I love it so much!

Hmmm wat’s this about Copperfield’s? Perhaps it could be possible. Let me check further; will let know be closer to the day.

Taking my leave … forward step … Pong cha cha cha oops I missed one — never mind repeat again ……….:D

  23. gee… LilyH,
    TQ for #44 …. phew!
When I read #43… the 1st sentence I was jammed stuck! wat rude? wah pianz peng san! ;) I was not offended on the contrary, I was petrified! perplexed! wondering blimme! wat have I said wrong this time.
Seems we are 2 of a kind, equally direct but I learn to keep my comments to myself more these days.. I learn the hard way!
Message understood :D No apology needed the clarification is sufficient.
Admire your boldness & sincerity. :D

  24. hello AndrewY & GraceK…. no excuse liao … c both of you at the walk!

GraceK… still wondering abt DCA? remind me on 13Oct, if explanation required ;)

  25. Thanks for your registrations, I have noted. It is good to know who are coming… :D

Those who had emailed me that u are unable to come much as u want to, due to prior arrangements, whatever… it is okie, it happens.

Those who are “pending”… hurry up put your name down!
This team has faithfully organized these walks month after month because of your show of support. My personal passion is to try to make it more than just a walk, those who had joined me knows but, without your support… this passion dies!

  26. Christina

Aiya, don’t said like that, not excuse lah. Walking is my first priority (I already have good record on it, right?) if there is no particular event. So, sure I come. Thanks for your effort. Must see you lah, otherwise may be have to wait until 2008 (Ay, don’t make me wait so long lah).

    Lily

If the travel agent staff breifing us is a beautiful lady, book a time (anytime, weekday or weekend) for me for the briefing. Otherwise I prefer you give the briefing for me, ha ha. Thanks.

  27. ps: #48 is not a plea. Just speaking my mind with honesty and Boldness!

All of us join SHC for many reasons but I believe the core is to fellowship and networking. Most have expressed we lost many friends because Work was our companion for years.

In fact, the last 4 months, I have lost a couple of friends… hence, it has once again changed my priorities!
b4 it gets too drama, not my style… I’ll take off now to get my adrenalin charged at the East Coast for the Go Kart Challenge yea! that’s my other growing passion!

  28. ps: #48 is not a plea. As in all matters, it works both ways…Just speaking my mind with honesty and Boldness!

  29. Joy, where were you to see all the happenings in the palace…you cant be under the emperor’s bed where I was but I did hear a poooooooot rising to a boooooooom coming from his adjoining toilet………you in there and tried to gas the royalities to death huh?

Chris, when any community grows, it’ll inevitably splinter into sub-groups taking with them their affinities. There’ll be fresh talks of true friendship all over again.

Frankly, at our age, if there’re true friends to make, we wd have made them by now altho the quota need not be closed.

    Many are plagued by loneliness.

Yes, do pls be the honest and bold you built on integrity and compassion. Be yourself and heeee, be like tim……..we go for ice cream as we pursue & beam in our dreams

  30. hi Christina,

thks for the reminder, pls add my name to your list.

btw can share a little abt “I see Grace” that u n Grace are talking abt?

  35. Hi Kenneth,
ya lor, sometimes I too cant remember wat I had for lunch even on the same day! hhahah

  37. Hi MaryC, answer to your request: they are still doing some works at the RainForest Trail but they have opened up another trail, which I believe should be ok. Anyway, if I can get up early on the 13th morn, I’ll check out that trail first before making a decision.

  38. Hi PeggyH, our short conversation refers. I have not decided on the route is because on 29Sep I saw that the maintenance team are carrying out some works to the RainForest Trail. I want very much to include this trail this time, as last year we didnt have enough time to do so.

  40. Hi MaryC, didnt login earlier tonight. Missed u at the dance. Heard abt your coming knee op. Trust it’s gonna be alright! Please rest, there will be time enough to take a walk when u are ready :D

  41. Dennis, dont worry lah, she wont tie you up & hang you from a tree. There’re at least 4 gates to exit but do make a bow at everyone b4 you take leave……..

(Must be rushing off to place yr bets on the international matches huh? No problem, can tip you here, England to beat Estonia and quite safe to go for sporepools’ half ball).

  47. Tim.
Oh, sorry about the mistake. For a moment there I thought your “schizo” half was talking.
It DOES serve you right for making such remarks all over the place, but I apologise for misunderstanding.

  48. Hi JaneY, now that I read #82, sorrie, as I had mentioned in #79, I will not b able to login on Sat. I am so glad u came for the walk.

  51. Thanks Christina for conducting the Bot. Walk and giving us commentaries of the garden along the way.

We enjoy the company of SHCians and it is like 1 BIG extended family of 36
going for a grand “kai kai”

At dinner, we,John,Lawrence,Veron,Gingko and me had a great time “salvaging” paper thosai twice with Indian veg, dishes and fruits and talk about our good old childhood days playing marbles,5 stones, kena hatam on our top if we lose in the top spinning game, ping pong /shell game.

And sharing stories of their favourite pet dogs, chickens, cats and snakes and rearing fighting fishes.

That really brings back our childhood memories that we MISSED so much.

Although Silverhairs, yet we are “YOUNG” at heart, spirit and mind.
    Jia yu! Jia Yu!

  52. Hi Chris

  54. Dear Christina,

You said “… tell me if I have missed out your name…”. Okay, my dear pal, where is mine? Catherine Yeo, were you there? Naughty you, did not come to say hello!

Christina, Albeit, thank you very much for organizing this wonderful Gardens tour. Appreciate your efforts, making it so easy for me to just stroll along, listen to your commentaries and take in the beautiful and interesting sights. The Gardens is like two different worlds apart since I last visited it umpteen years ago. There have been so many changes. Unbelieveable!

Enjoyed the good company and meeting more new fellow members.

It’s Auld Lang Syne for now, until the next walk in 2008!

  55. Hi Charles
Thanks for the beautiful albumtof pix take at the walk.
They are well taken and sharp. Good to keep for remembrance.
    Thank you again,
    Jane

  56. oops sorie Charles,
Some typo error there. I mean to say thanks for the beautiful album of pix taken at the walk. They are well taken and sharp too. Good to keep for remembrance. Thank you once again.

    Jane

  57. Hi Christina

Many thanks for organizing the BG walk. This is CG. Ha! ha! I like it when you yelled out CG!!!

I enjoyed myself very much and I apologise if I get out of hand sometimes :)

Also apologise for “caboting” early cos i had something on that evening.

Looking forward to next year’s walking programme.

Also thanks Charles for the lovely photos. You never fail to give us good pictures.

    Have a nice day everyone.

    Warmest Regards
    Caroline Gee

  58. Dear Chris,

A Big thank Q for organising the interesting BG walk and the knowledge u imparted. U really done your homework well! I used to jog/run alone in BG from Jervois Rd, but did not explore, and yesterday’s walk was an eyeopener.

Hi Charles, thanks for the well taken shots and not forgetting or our handsome Ben for being the pro behind your camera. U r very efficient, fotos up within 24 hrs.

Steven stated: “we,John,Lawrence,Veron,Gingko,Chris and me had a great time “salvaging” paper thosai twice with Indian veg, dishes and fruits”. I cant imagine, we all behaved like African kids or overstayed “hungry ghosts”. But, it was real fun! fun! fun!
Mind you, after that, Gingko and I proceeded for another round of chicken pie and cheese cake with earl grey tea. So, the conclusion is =light weight people are great eaters…….

Aiyo! I have to wait for 1 year, from 2007 to 2008 to resume the walk.

    Have a great weekend !
    veronique

  59. Dennis (W), hope yr wkend haul has been good……for me it’s a repeat of “2-legs good, 4-legs bad”.

Mary (C), unlike the humkarchan, I dont see any need for any apology….if we’re of the same calibre, we trade barbs and enjoy the spikes and at the end of the day, you’ll be one up on me………you’ll get to tickle my armpits.

    Fair?

  60. Christina,

thks again for so painstakingly working on this latest walk. it was indeed very enjoyable and educational.

    Gingko & Veron,

you both could be so terrible – breaking away fm us and enjoying some more chicken pie, cheese cake n earl grey tea! I know what Lawrence is going to tell his camels to do to both of you on the 27th!!!hehehe. No chicken pie for me but wholemeal bread n Skippy after coming home. See what you did, ah niahs?

TO ALL OTHERS: it was nice getting to know all of you. it’ll take us a few more meetings for us to get more acquainted. we’ll get there!

Hi Grace Wong: after asking for your name 3 times, I’d better remember you. c u the next time

Hi Kenneth Tan: you’re coming for cycling isn’t it? put your name up leh. business for this activity rather slow.

Gingko: where art thou? got seafood after that you know?

Yew Kwong: I’m trying to drum up support. these uncles n aunties so slowwwwwwww one.

    cya n keep smiling…johnhowe

  61. Hi John

Appreciate ur great efforts n lending me ur hand. I rather not worry abt e number cos Sat is quite bz dy 4 most. Anyway I shall cya.

Take a break n hv a kat kat.

  62. Aiyo John, here comes the tiger, hear you roar…

Don’t be so cross with Veron and me. We felt very embarrassed to wanting to eat a third or fourth round infront of so many of you.

I could eat a cow and she could eat a horse. So we decided to go to a barn to eat to our hearts content when no one was watching. She was not telling the whole truth when she said we only had cheese cake, chicken pie & Earl grey tea. She deliberately skipped the part on the double-whammy triple-scoop banana split ice-cream.

Now you’re getting me into trouble. Revealing so much of these behind her back. Better scram before she gets to me… Adios!

  63. Walau Veron and Gingko,

The cat is let out of the bag.

Both of you are big eaters after all and yet so slim.

Never invite the rest of us after “savaging’ the paper thosai to Swensen to eat the Earthquake yummy yummy ice cream.

  64. Oh dear me, John

I was so frantic, I short-changed her name. It’s Veronique, Veronique. Please remember to address her Veronique the next time you see her.

  65. Hi Gingko/Veronique,

I thought I was branded once a BIG eater by my ex-colleagues.

but NOW, someone else has beaten the record.

……I could eat a cow and she could eat a horse. So we decided to go to a barn to eat to our hearts content when no one was watching.and ..MOO… MOO and Neigh Neigh..to our heart’s delight!.

  66. Hi,Christina.Just want to express our thanks to you for taking the time and trouble to recce the B.Gardens in the morning and then leading the Walk in the afternoon. I am sure all of us enjoyed the informative Walk and the warmth and friendliness of all those who participated. The Gardens have indeed been beautifully transformed.

We also need to thank Charles and Benson for taking the snap-shots for all to enjoy and
    to remember the friendship.

See you all again, soon …. Philip and Anne

  67. Dennis, dont put yr annuities on england to beat russia 2nite.

Robinson is presently not Paul but Poor (form) Robinson, and he may sneak in goals. Sol campbell isnt john terry either.

In the home game when england beat no-hoper estonia, the 1st goal slipped thru Poom’s legs; the 2nd & 3rd were all deflections so the 3-0 scoreline was flattering than honest.

And they will be playing in cold cold russia on plastic turf.

If you’re adventurous enough, do keep an eye on latin world cup qualifiers………there’ll definitely be very strange results meaning big juicy returns.

    Keep well !

  68. Tim, will b watching the England vs Russia game 2nite. I think it will b a draw game. Yes u r right, Robinson is having a bad games letting in silly goals..butter fingers huh?

I dont watch the latin world cup qualifiers as the game is played very early in the morning.

My annuities is safe wif me.

  69. Dennis, by now it’s h2o under the bridge…..russia beat england 2-1 and it’s a juicy 32 times for A-H.

In fairness to him, Robinson din play too badly. The 2 goals which went past him consisted of a penalty and poor defending – in fact, the english defender cd hv kept the ball out with a lunge.

Yes, latin american football is a lot less predicatble like germany losing 0-3 to the czech republic last nite.
