April 2008 – Our fishing time on a kelong

Now, thinking ahead, with all good ideas from SHCians, and flowing in before 31 Dec 2007, we have now scheduled a day fishing trip to a kelong on Sat, 19 April 2008.

And, for those who love fishing ikan with reel and line, like eating fish porridge with kanna, chye poh, kiam chye, play cards or mahjong until the wee hours of the morning, coffee round the clock and able to sleep on wooden planks,  with rats and cockcroaches running around, you can also stay overnight on the kelong.

Let the fresh sea breeze flow past your face, enjoy the quiet away from the city, and have a chat, a long chat, with fellow SilverHairs over the weekend.

If you are prone to sea sickness, we shall prepare some cough mixture for you.  They are proven to calm you down.  In April, the seas are calm too.

However, only the date is finalised.  The place has not been found.  I found a classified travel advertisement in the Straits Times, spoke with them, and found the program interesting.   Haven’t got an Event Organiser to raise her/his hand yet.  But, the gathering is ON.  So, keep this date in your diary.

Please click on this website.  Estimate cost for 2D 1N: SGD 100, inclusive of transport from a Singapore MRT, meals on the kelong.  Have a look and see if you like it.  If you like it, we go for it.  We will limit to 42 pax only, to suit one bus.

Strictly for SilverHairsClub members only.  Here is an earlier POST for those interested in fishing.

  1. Can’t imagine rats running on my face…. must be water rats, cannot figure out how rats ended up in kelong. Shall leave this pleasure to others to enjoy. Really, have a great time, enjoy the camaradie, the company of rats, cockroaches, ikan bilis and what-have-you…

btw, Merry X’mas and a Happy New Year to all SHCians!!!

  2. Terence, if I am still around on Sat, 19 April 2008, will definitely join you to sleep on wooden planks and let the rats and cockcroaches run al over usas well as indulging in a long chat with them and geting them to join SHC.

(Todate, the eligibility criteria for joining silver excludes “species”)

Btw, AnnG, those rates are the descendants of Pied Piper…………remember him and where he walked the rats & those litle boys into?

  3. Heehee Terence

You forever get the date wrong. What are we going to do with you???

Please register me for this kelong trip and I want to stay overnight.

  4. Hi Terence,

Please count me in for overnight stay too.

Am looking forward to living near the sea and frolicking wth fellas SHCians. I like fishing and chessing, are you game?

Not sure whether the mahjong session will chase the fishes away!

  5. Hi Terence,

Your Kelong Trip on 19 Apr 08 coincides with the Cycling which Yew Kwong had scheduled earlier. I have not been to a Kelong for decades and would love to go with all the fun SHCians. But hor, cycling is also my passion, so how? Hello hello dear Yew Kwong, can reschedule your Cycling to either before or after the Kelong Trip? Thanks thanks…hoping he say ok. :)

  6. Hi Terence,
I’m keen, but the thought of the cockroaches and rats scare me. Anyway, please sign me up. I hope insect repellants act on cockroaches as well. As to rats, I think I will sleep standing up, hehe. Can I bring a hammock?

Hehe, Dan likes ‘chessing’ lah Caroline, ;-) or perhaps he did mean ‘chesting’, hahaha.

  7. Terence,
A little bird told me that you have to pay for each and every comment made on this website. Is that correct?? I hope not. If it is, I’m so sorry I incurred so much cost with my chatter. Please enlighten. Thanks.

  8. Ah Nee

Dun wori abt e clashes of both events. Nevertheless, cycling is still on not 4getting tat those who cant go 4 e kelong trip. I wun mind 2 cycle 2 destination if its nearby otherwise I will gv it a miss. Tats y I din register.

Btw, cycling is my top priority 4 2008.

  9. Hi Mary,

Your little bird is NOT correct. We dont have to pay for every comment made on this forum. All SHC members are encouraged to chat as much as they like.

We do pay an annual fee for hosting and traffic. But that’s it. The amount is small, and manageable, so no worries.

Please continue to use this SHC forum, as a forum to meet new and more friends.

  10. Teok lor, in preparation for the upcoming D&D, cycling can trim trim those unwanted “fat” away mah. Then we can look our best for that night….ha…ha…ha…saying is easier than doing, nonetheless will try my best! so I better go cycling also.

    Ah Nee

  11. Dear all,

Kelong could be just a yearly affair! Cycling every months. Do you see the different?

Terence, is our chest game on? Don’t forget to bring the beer, we can drown ourselves.

    Caroline, don’t gostan!

I feels that kelong can be a fishing, chessing and romantic affair!

  12. Ouch Dan! You having what game with Terence?? Hahaha. Naughty, naughty.
Well, with a combination of beer, chest and drowning, perhaps you are talking about a treasure chest hunt in the sea with pirates and all?

  13. Correction! Kelong Trip is after D&D. Anyway cycling is a form of execise to keep fit and healthy. Dear all, enjoy your Kelong Trip and me happy cycling. :)

    Ah Nee

  14. Dan

Wif U hf dunken in beer, I guess U cant c e difference. Kelong is a everyday sight but cycling is a mthly affair. Got it!!!

Anyway, I choose 2 stay put cos we cant afford 2 lose credibility. Rain or shine, we are definitely there 4 U.

  15. Terence : I m coming. I tink Vwong’s recommendation (see #12) looks good.

Dan : U r rite..it is a once a year event and shall not miss it…hey, can join in the chest…ooops..sori chess game b it english or chinese and also beer drinking?

    Dennis not the menace

  16. The late Major Fong Sip C used to be known as a rat-catcher to his constituents has in tim his last disciple so gals, dont worry abt rats running on/over you.

Moreover, I hv been told that DanH tosses & juggles rats & cockroaches with his chest, smthg even the stuntmen fr the Moscow Circus cant do.

Terence, on the price issue, think you hv looked at it straight but no worry, even there’s a price to pay, tim has paid them for everyone in advance, till the youngest SHCian starts to draw down on his/her annuities at 85.

We hv the when but where’s the kelong and who’s looking at it? It can be a lalalalala or a tatatatata………………

  17. Yew Kwong,

Kelong no doubt a daily sight, but we are talking about living on in. It’s about fishing and chessing and mahjong and drinking!

We are not out to snare the cyclists away, and we don’t need a big crowd to scare the fishes away.

On that day, we may see each other and wave to each other, but never be envious of each other.

Here, I think I am speaking for Terence.

  18. Dan

I 2 think I m speaking 4 those who cant go on e trip. Guess e numbers will add up 2 more than 1 Terence.

Anyway e trip will still be njoyable n fun w/o us. We will go on a ptely organised one e nx rd.

  19. Hi everybody,

It is always nice to have alternatives. At least, the fishing group will have something to talk about the cycling group. And, vice versa. I think we will have more than enough numbers to join the fun.

Many of us have not seen STARS at night, for a long time.

    Terence

  20. Unintentionally, 2 events will coincide on the same day. Certainly it cant be a case of Terence doing the ” kelong” so please pls, folks dont get too excited over it otherwise poor Terence will hv to cycle to the kelong or kelong the kelong or do something wrong like every bike he potong which will end up with everyone kosong.

If there’s a silver lining, it is that SHCians will be spoilt for choices. It may be possible that the cyclists can join the kelongangs after their ride if a boat can be arranged.

  21. Hi Ah Nee,

We go cycling together. Give Yew Kwong the support and since I have not been to one at all.

Terence, I think John is seeing STARS everynight and day organizing that countdown!! Right John?

  22. Im in cycling too..dont wanna sleep with rats & cockroaches even once hor..eeeeii..so geli!

anyway…cards, mahjong, drinking ..aiyo not my cuppa tea leh…& waiting for the fish to wallup the bait…alamak, i very impatient…tak boleh tahan lor…hehe, sori Terence & gang..u all enjoy yourselves!…but pls bring the fresh fishes back for us to cook…very sedap!…hahaha :)

btw…im phobia of the sea..scared what’s under the seabed…so miss Carly, how can i be mermaid lah..tak matching!

Lina..we go danzing tonite & talk abt life..no need at kelong lah hor :)

  23. Dear Yew Kwong

As a helper in the cycling event, I am terribly sorry to have abandoned ship and opt for the kelong. I’ve only been to kelongs in my lifetime. And each time, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Be it the rustic setting, the romantic sun-set, the lazing around under the stars, the thrill of anticipation and watching the kelong operators hauling in their catch, …I can go on and on …is all very appealing to me. I’ve been waiting for a kelong trip since Batam. So, hope to have your understanding.

  24. Wow, so enchanting…….like that how can I miss the kelong and so will hv to buy a bit of time from my creator………ah Seah, limbeh lai liao…………

Heee, after the days @ K, ah Dan closes eyes also knows whose chest to play liao…….

  25. Wow, after checking out the link provided by vwong @ #12 – I am excited about this trip.

It’s about the same price as the Batam trip if we can get 42 pax. It will cover 2D/1N full board & lodging plus land & sea transport.

This kelong is again different from the other 5 that I’ve been to.

  26. Lily

No wori. Each has their preference n priority. Anyway U can join e one we going 2 hv at a later date if U still dun get enuf funs at e latest kelong.

  27. Dennis, can join in the chess game together with Terence.

Lily, mine, Dennis n Terence. Yes, going to the kelong is like a walk along the beach, it does conjured up those sentimental feelings about life and blissful relationship and the eternal bigness of Him who hold the universe by the forces of gravity!

  28. Wow Lily,
You are right. That site, (provided by vwong) looks very attractive.
Terence, what about that? Then I won’t have to worry about rats and cockroaches.

  29. The kelong facilities recommended by VeronicaW (# 12) appears from the website information to be professionally managed.
I am interested to join in the outing. thanks VeronW

  30. Hi Charles,

Am really surprised you want to join. Don’t even need to twist your arm this time.

No proper toilet facilities you know. And no hot water. Everything goes into the sea and gets eaten by the fishes and then you eat the fishes for dinner. And that’s why the seafood tastes so yummy!

Make sure you secure everything properly, like your dentures, ‘cos once they fall into the sea, it is ‘sayonara’ forever. People lose eveything in those waters, handphones, glasses, wigs, etc..

But must say this kelong is strictly a money making concern, so up to your standard. Used to hang around my father’s kelong every weekend, off Danga Bay in JB. And that is why I am going cycling!

  31. Hello hello, all the Kelong enthusiast, this was the Kelong ever mentioned before, some time ago when Daniel Kang was proposing for a Kelong Trip. The Trip did not take effect then, but I think Susan & Bessie went ahead with the Kelong Trip at another Kelong, which is next to this Kelong that recommended by VW. Both Kelongs are near Sibu Island. You all may want to check with Susan or Bessie, they may be able to help or source for a “money for value” kind of Kelong. Now I recalled, the problem is that you have to provide your own transport to the Jetty. This morning so free mah…Kay poh Kay poh……leh long lei long to Kelong Kelong….. he…he…heee…

    Ah Nee

  32. The last time i went to the kelong sited off Ponggol was a distant past in 1963 during my school days. It was a memorable experience and I could still remember the fishes heaving their last breaths after being brought up from the waters. You can literally hear them! That night, the moon shone brightly but there was nothing in sight except for the distant flickering lights. Very peaceful. You could only hear the soft lapping of waves against the kelong sticks. Ocassionally as you glanced below, you could see the eyes of the squids or manta-rays reflecting the lights of the kelong lamp hung below the fish trap area. Truly wonderful.

  33. One more check with another kelong, and we will then decide which one we will go to, by early Jan 2008. Looks like we will have good participation, and this should be great fun.

Keep the names coming in. We will draw up a list of interested participation in Jan.

Charles, very romantic description. I share your memories too.

    Terence Seah

  34. Hi Terence
Briefly glance over the comments. Count me in for the trip for the time being.
BTW, my friends showed me pictures of fish they caught. Really really v big eh! and many too. Of course your expertise also counts.
Can check on more with friend if you have doubts/questions on #12

  35. Good day Terence,

Myself(Paul Leong and wife(Jenny Leong) would like to sign up for this April 2008 Kelong Trip (overnight). Please include us in. Do no want to miss trip.

  36. Hi Paul,
    Finally u r in2 correct thread, bravo..

Now u only need to register in the correct thread for our SHC 2nd D&D on March 2008..

Hope 2c u soon.. cheers.. Dolly

  37. Dear Charles #44

hmmm… reflections, I was there too! on another kelong another date heehee…
When the fish I caught took its last breathe, I felt so sad, didnt throw my line out again. The moonlight nite, the gentle breeze, softly lapping of the water made you feel a gentle sway.. slowing, slowly lull away the dis-ease. Truly a one of a kind experience!

I look forward to such a trip again but might be away in Apr08, so I’ll juz kiv the date for now…

  38. Hi Paul & Jenny,

Wow, long time no hear frm u guys. How’s the trip 2 Shanghai? Nice 2 hear u r joing the kelong trip. We will have a good tym.

    Cheers, Dennis

  39. Hi Charles,

Talking about the kelong at Punggol, i used 2 stay tir during my school holidays in the 60’s. Ur description of the old place brings bak some 1derful memories 4 me.

    Cheers, Dennis

  40. Hi Terence,

Count me in for the Kelong trip…..I hope it is not as rickety as it used to be, years back. will still try to guard against sea-sickness.

    Tks ………….Jie

  41. Hi Terence,

I am interested in this overnight kelong trip. Please register me. It will be my FIRST overnight stay on a kelong. Featherweight me, a bit apprehensive since this kelong is right in the middle of the Sibu Sea, but ought to be fun with the company of fellow SHCians, fishing, chatting, makan-ing, playing games and spending time “offshore”.

Veronique Lee is coming too. Please include her. I am going to tag along this barracuda catcher who has had many overnight stays on kelongs and is affirmative that I would enjoy the experience.

Hey Veron Wong, are you joining us? What about you, Joyce Tan ? Since our countdown one didn’t materalise, come along.

Also, MJ Queen Catherine Yeo, hope you can come too. Here’s a chance for you to play MJ till dawn, relish the sea breeze and watch the sun rise.

  42. Daniel Kang, if you are available to come and cook some paranakan fish or cuttlefish, plse join us. We will get the spices along the way. We have fresh fishes and sotongs at the kelong.

If you are a seafood cook, plse raise your hand, and come to the kelong.

Will be putting up the list soon, based on the replies.

Yeah, am looking forward to the seafood.

    Terence Seah

  43. Terence,
looks like your kelong will be overloaded from the looks of the response. Sure can take the weight or not? Got life jackets or not? Hahaha.
Now not so concerned about being mosquito bait. Any sharks around apart from the mj sharks?

  44. Yes yes Mary has raised a good point about safety. Remember we are out there in the open sea. Overloading can be a risk. Those not able to swim need to be extra careful not to fall into water. In the night, with the crowd & noise nobody will notice the difference. So many people, the tranquility is gone!

  45. Hi Gingko,

Actually I was still contemplating whether to sign up for this kelong trip but since I hear my name being called….yes ok pls sign me up Terence.

Even if we do not play mj we can still eat the fresh catches and tell ghost stories amidst the backdrop of the dark night, lapping waves and chilly sea breeze? ……can’t wait!

Have a Merry Christmas and a healthy joyful 2008 everyone!

  46. Goody, CatherineY you are coming! We will have a good time together. Ghost stories? Err, ermmm… okay I will bring my MP3 ;)

Hmmm, the festive mood is all around. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!

  47. Hi Gingko
Thanx for thoughts. Signed in alredi. You don’t know meh. I recommended the Kelong and I think Terence taking it up with so many supporters.
A commercial one- sh be able to take many people. Tan boh chiak if cater only for small crowd.
I check with friend the condition and the boat and come on again in 2008.
All the best to the New Year!
    veron

  48. Hi Gingko & all,

Was away for a few days… Yes, i’d like to be included. Am marking down this date and awaiting for confirmation on the destination.

    Cheers

  49. Charles, if the fear of falling into the deep blue sea is a concern, worry not for I shall collect all the xmas ballooons & count-down balloons released by hotels for you, all inflated and tied round you so that safety will be a certainty………..heeee, but you’ll look quite funny like that & might scare the shiit out of the kelong operator so ai mai?

  50. Good morning Eyvonne Chew & Josephine Yap. You two enjoyed your Christmas Eve party until tao gong gong ah? Lost your way to Terence’s thread for the kelong fishing trip signing up in Daniel Kang’s OLD post. Haha, Jospehine you were already “dreaming” of the kelong at 4.16am on Christmas Day!!!

Terrence, please include these two sleepy dames in your list for the April’08 kelong/fishing trip.

  51. Hi Veron Wong, at first you said “try to join” and then “count me in …..for the time being”. Fishing line or rod isn’t casted yet, already you tarek tarek. Now you sure sure coming liao. Fantastic!

Say, another kaki, Joyce Tan confirms she is coming. This is excellent, we can all join forces and hopefully reap rich harvest. Joyce, hope your right arm is fully recovered. We will need every ounce of arm, leg, body and mind strength for this fishing trip ;)

Hey Veronique, are you ready to impart your skills on hooking barracudas?? Budd, be sure you keep an eye on me…. I mean the fish. I know you have more meat than me, don’t ever let any big fish yank me into the Sibu Sea. Sharks will pass me by without batting an eye, just don’t want to be washed out to the South China Sea and never find my way back East.

  52. Gingko,

Thank you for redirecting these two blurr dames to the right track. These two had been spending until dou gong gong.hehe.

    Terrence,

Please add Julie Gan in your fishing list. Thanks

  53. Hey Gingko bell!

Surprisingly U r very sober n sharp on the 1st day of X’mas hor! Last nite never booze enough or must hv gone to slumberland pretty early. Hehehe……

Regarding how I managed to hook a 18kg barracuda? It was juz luck, correct bait and a good set of fishing gear. I hv no skill at all but used to go fishing wif a group of fishing experts who are mostly guys including my brother and they helped me to tie the hooks and even took turns to struggle wif the barracuda for about 30mins B4 we pulled the fish up. U cant pull the big fish up immediately cos the line will snap. Until now, im still blurr2 and dunno wat is fishing all abt, juz joined my friends to kelong to relax, njoy n plenty of food to eat.

Anyway, those who have siged up, U will not regret.

  54. We are likely to confirm the Sibu kelong on 15 Jan 2008, as mentioned in the Post.

Alex from the kelong has confirmed the place can hold 140 people. For us, the limit is 42 pax, to fit the bus.

Am awaiting confirmation if we will get a bed each.

If you have an another kelong to suggest, please share the info, before 15 Jan.

I read your comments, but am not sure who has been to this Sibu kelong. Veron, have you been there? Anybody, who has been there. We need some tips from you.

    Terence Seah

  55. If by your “wish to overnight as well” it means to stay in the kelong for the nite, think you hv no choice cos there wont be any sceduled ferry to take us back on land unless a tsunami comes a sweeping us all into the deep blue sea.

If “overnight wish” as a 2nd meaning then the plot thickens………………….

  56. Hi Alice,

Thanks for the tip. I remember seeing this name whenver I go to the Harbour Front. I think it is off Indonesia, but not too sure. Will give it a check.

Meantime, I am back Singapore during 1st week of January. Anybody likes to meet up wtih one of the people running the Sibu kelong? We can have a chat with him, and then I shall firm the kelong reservation by the 17 Jan 2008.

    Terence

  57. Terence @72

“…confirm the Sibu kelong on 15 Jan 2008” but you posted “scheduled a day fishing trip to a kelong on Sat, 19 April 2008”.

Re your comment #78, you mentioned “then I shall firm the kelong reservation by the 17 Jan 2008”.

May I know the final exact fishing trip day – in April or in Jan 2008?

I have makred my calender for 19 April 2008 leh.

    Rene

  58. Charles #58
    Tim #64,

Charles, so you must be relieved that the kelong can take 140 pax. Don’t think the operator would overload and risk losing their licence and lives as well.

For added safety, you can wear a life vest at all times, or take Timothy’s advice and have the inflated balloons tied around you. But if you are still not happy with both safety features and you should fall, I will be there to rescue you!

  59. Hi Rene,

The kelong dates are 19/20 April 2008.

Subject to meeting up with the kelong guys, the other dates in January are for us to confirm reservation, meaning we would put the deposit down. Sorry for the confusion.

    Terence Seah

  60. Terence, if the meet-up is not in suibu but in temasek, I can join you anytime in the day before 5 p.m. but pls pls, do byo eo….and Lina, anytime you want to be a lifejacket or a lifebuoy, I am just a step away to be the first to try you out……….

  61. Lina
Yes, Tim’s imagination does get out of hand very often doesn’t it?
I think he’d lurve to sink with you without the life jacket, hehe. Right TIM??

Then he’ll hope you’ll do mouth to mouth resiscitation on him after that, hahaha.

  62. You know why some people drowned even with lifejackets next to them?

They tried out all the LJs to look for the one that fits to a T, then wear the tuxedo over it to look good…….

I survived in an emergency bcos I simply hugged the LJ tightly, with my legs wrapping round it like tentacles.

So if L is is a LJ, she can rest her worry that I’ll put jer on.

Well, I dont mind any kisses but whoever wants to kiss me will hv to play to the rules strictly.

So, hv you brushed yr teeth this morning? At least twice hor…………….heeee.

  63. Tim,
There have been cases of people drowning because of loose fitting LJs. Instead of keeping them afloat, they either slip off or choke them when the person sinks and gets his jacket around his throat.

People don’t realise that brushing your teeth, whether twice or three times, in the morning doesn’t totally remove ‘morning mouth’ or bad breath in the morning. Only a drink and food will do that. The ‘bad breath’comes partly from an empty stomach. So people who skip breakfast tend to have bb. and smokers believe that a cig will remove it. It only adds another foul smell to it. Sorry Tim.

  64. Aiyayayaya……………Mary, what shall i do with you when you give me academically straight & politically correct answers?

But I cant do anythg you hv said for me to do if L is a LJ………you dont try to revive a cooked turkey when the food is for immediate taking.

“….people who skip breakfast tend to have bad breath”. and smokers believe that a cig will remove it. It only adds another foul smell to it. Sorry Tim.”

Well, let me complete it for you…..more honestly.

“… while people who skip breakfast tend to have bb, they’re a lesser pain than people who eat only onions for breakfast and then start whistling from the butt for rest of the day. Smokers believe that a cig will remove it (the bb)which has been overwhemingly confirmed by their wives/gfs Detrators argue without a basis and so weakly that it only adds another foul smell to it, forgetting that they themselves shd eat more than only onions in the morning.”

Heee, sorry Mary but it’s so real.

  65. It looks like the people responding to the kelong trip are doing so on at least two different forum sites, and the number who responded positively so far appears to be far in excess of the 42 available seats on the bus.

Would it be possible to provide a tentative list of those who want to go, and to come up with a formula to decide who gets to go and who gets to sit at home and grow green with envy? :o)

    Ron Koh
(I want to go! I want to go!)

  66. Oh yes Tim. I’m not disputing what you said about onions. Garlic too and durians.
It’s especially bad when your dance partner just had chicken rice for dinner or when the taxi driver had that too.
I avoid them when I know that I’ve a ‘social’ activity lined up for that day.
So people who are reading this, please remember. There’s nothing worse than being forced to breath in all that repugnant smell, cigarettes included. Unless of course, everyone is having the same. Then pity the ‘outsiders’ who aren’t, hehe.

  67. Hi Mary,

Of course, Timothy would love to do mouth to mouth resuscitation, but the Oxy-Viva Resuscitator with an attached oxygen tank(introduced in pools and gyms) does a better job. Want to try, Tim?

Ron #89, So does it mean stone, paper, scissors for those who are interested?

  68. Hi Ron Koh,

We will put up the list mid Jan. I guess the feedback comes in sequence on this forum, so this should suffice.

Ron, are you akelong fishing enthusiat?

    Terence

  69. Hi Terence

Please include me for this kelong trip. You may wish to check out on Likly Enterprise Kelong 511, near Pulau Sibu. I went there in Jul this year. The contact person is Wong Pak You (Ayu) HP 013-721 2332, 012-771 1775 Kelong tel 011-718235, 07-7970729. Pulau Sibu, is a resort but was closed and under renovation when I went there.

  70. Hi, Terence,

Re #93, I enjoy fishing in general, anything from catching ikan pasir at the East Coast (many moons ago, when ikan pasir was plentiful there) to kelong and deep sea fishing.

Have not been fishing for sometime, though. The last kelong trip was in July ’05 (Chia Soon Kelong in Pengerang). That kelong is definitely not recommended, unless your idea of a kelong trip is to play mahjong and sing karaoke all night long. I’m not sure if it was the singing that did it, but the only fish that were caught was four tiny, odds-and-ends fish between several people who were actually fishing.

    Ron Koh

  71. Hi Terence
Wish to join this KelongTrip, kindly
let me know the payment and who to remit to?
May I wish you and your family,
A Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year – 2008

  72. I wish all a healthy & happy 2008
    Dear Terence
    RE:#72
There are a few kelongs in Sibu. Almost same pricing. HB kelong is the only one owned by Singaporean. I have not been to HB kelong. Check with friend who had been there.
Beds are two levels or one level. Can see the beds from the outside,wh means no private rooms for the beds.
    Donot expect 5-star.
Bell rung when meals are ready. Seating 10 to a table. Arranged in groups. So if 42. 2 has to share the table with another group.
2-3 hrs ride to Johore. 20-30min boat ride.
Boat can take about 20 persons. If you decide on this, if you can, arrange with owner that we take all 1 level bed.
Since it is not peak period in April, check whether owner can be at jetty to meet us to board the boat. Owner to make sure enough life jackets on boat.
Others: Bring your own fishing rod. Rental ones may not be in good condition.
As this is a commercial K for recreation, you will not find anyone hauling up the nets for fishes. Such kelongs still exist but not for large group of visitors to stay overnight.
Alternative: There are some Ks in the Indonesian waters. Air cond. rooms. You have to pay more.
Roughly $150 instead of $100. No baits provided. Any SHcians know the website??
    All for now

  73. Hi everybody,

The kelong trip is confirmed. This week, we will make arrangements to meet up with the kelong organisers. Have emailed them; and one of their partners Alex will meet us after working hours. If we do not meet this week, Alex would meet us all at the 17 Jan 2008 gathering at Hans. You can throw questions to him eg if the beds have springs, what kind of fish we will have for breadfast or whether our “outputs” will drop into the sea for the fishes to eat.

Thanks to Ronald Koh. He would be helping with the kelong organising.

  74. Hi Ronald,

Thank you for your assistance with the kelong trip. Please start a new Post, with the registration list.

One of the kelong owners will join us. See you on the 17 Jan 2008.

  75. The high tide on April 19th is at 11am. Tide is high – around 2.7M. This may mean that when we go to the kelong by ferry, the sea may still be choppy coz monsoon season is just over. Expect to get wet and those prone to sea sickness take some precautions eg seasick pill, light breakfast, plastic bags, etc. Its beginning of a new moon phrase so can expect sotong at night! My contribution to the kelong weekend! Cheers.

  76. Hi, Terence:

Re #105, I’m working on the list. Found the other thread. Should be up tomorrow.

So far, barring inadvertent ommissions, it looks like 35 people have registered for the trip – including two tentative registrants and excluding two ‘go stan’ cases.
