Using MS Office (Excel) – (17th May 2014 – Saturday)

Microsoft Office (Excel) is a wonderful spreadsheet program. We can use it to develop our own family budget planning. I am no financial guru but a person who through life had managed other people’s money (as a purchaser). The bottom line is always the final balance sheet, the IN and OUT of money flow and how justify we are to spend the way it was spent. There is no one answer to every solution. If it is our own money, then plan and spend it wisely.

My intended talk, with details below, will just demonstrate to you the effects of any change in monthly income (gain or lost) will affect your projected family lifestyle.

  1. Thanks Hew Lee for organising.
I will be attending. I wud prefer u teach us the basics of Excel – how to prepare a simple spread sheet or simple graph charts using the various icons etc.

managing family budgets are very personal , not enough in 2 hours.

  2. Ronald, the proposed meeting in LKCC is just a “talk” only, no teaching on how to “design” the template to the objective of family budget spreadsheet. If there is demand from the class that they would like to learn how to design a family budget spreadsheet together with all the rules required to work on Excel spreadsheet (as what I have done with YWCA) then I can consider to start a 4-session class in Bukit Merah Library (subject to NLB’s approval and cost). The standard minimum of eight participants is required to start a class.

Only sample values of a standard family of four is used for the discussion. No one is required to provide any confidential information on their family budget expenditure to anyone.

  3. Change of Venue: For those who requested for a place, so far, I have registered all of you, thank you. But please note the CHANGE OF VENUE to Queenstown Community Centre (nearest MRT is Queenstown).

Direction: when you come out of the Queenstown MRT, turn left and down escalator. The CC is just one bus stop away. You can take any bus number. Check with bus captain that you are going the right direction, i.e. towards Commonwealth MRT. When you alight from the bus, the CC is just less than 5-minutes walk away.

  4. Hi Hew Lee,
    I am interested to learn.
17 May is one of the rare Saturdays that I am free because
    my grandchildren will be away.
But I don’t have a laptop. I can borrow one from the CC.
    Thank you.

  5. Hi Hew Lee

Thank you very much for taking your precious time to organise this informative session for the benefits of SHC members.

At the session I took notice of the attendance. Only 16 out of 21 registered participants turned out. There should be basic courtesy accorded to you for absence which I don’t see in this Post. Else those seats can be reallocated to other interested members.

I believe our members look forward to more such sessions of yours in future to keep them continue their learning. Thank once again.

  6. Hi Yew Kwong,
Thanks for your compliment and observation in bringing out this topic of courtesy of participants in pre-arranged talks that have limited sitting capacity. My record showed that out of the 5, one informed, one sick and only three non-conforming. 3 out of 21 is 14% of the group non-conforming. Yes, there is room for improvement in SHC or in any Club. Another term on this topic is “Graceful Living”. We cannot always take and never give. Give a word of thanks after the class, as some has done or say a word of “sorry” if you cannot make it this time and if possible, with sufficient notice. This will allow others to have a chance to attend. All events arranged by EO/EC are not like in the food court, “choop” first the seats with some tissue paper, then give it up if we find something better. Here we are not dealing with “tables”, we are dealing with “people/humans”, the EO, the EC or the team in the organising committee.

  7. Hi..YK / HL…it is easy to create a “blacklist” with EXCEL, literally.
When your input to a cell matches a pre-determined text, the cell will turn black; followed by the word “REJECTED” flashing madly on the screen and disapproving noise from the speakers. EXCEL can be fun — and furious.
