Pictures of Kelong trip 19-20 April 2008

The Kelong trip was just over last weekend, 19-20 April 2008.  Very exciting, we started at 6am on a Sat morning, and returning to Singapore safe & sound on a late Sun afternoon.  Ronald Koh was our Event Organiser, great job, however he did not catch any big fishes.  He was also the photographer for these pictures.

Instead, the prized fish (a grouper) went to SB Khoo.  Look at the pictures, and see the big smile on his face.  His family had the wok waiting for him when he came home.   SB, tell us how you enjoyed your fish, or you went to the market.

And, by the way, no one claimed the prize for the smallest fish.

It was a fun relaxing overnight kelong trip.  It was definitely a good opportunity for fellow SilverHairs to get to know one another better.  A big thank you to Ronald Koh.  And we look forward to another one next year.  Fishing leaders, please raise your hands.  To view the pictures, click here taken by RonKoh.

  2. Andrew Koh and Boon Liang sent me some photos taken by them during our recent trip to Hotboys Kelong. I felt it would be a shame keeping these photos to myself, and decided to put them on the web at http://picasaweb.google.com/ronald.origami, where I have my photos for my other fishing/photography kakis to view.

Take a look – you might fine the additional photos interesting.

Boon Liang took some photo of the island hopping trip to Pulau Sibu Besar, which Andrew and I did not go on, as we figured our time would be better spent going after ‘that big one’. Bad mistake ….

  3. Hi

Tim @ #1, Yes, I thought the kelong was fun, ready for the next one!

Ron Lai @ #3, Thanks, further must also thank you for hauling up the fish with the net, you were the nearest one to me so had to call you. You are right, my icebox (specially bought for the trip) was not wasted. I guess it will be useful too for future fishing/ke;long trips.

  4. Thanks Terence for uploading the Kelong photos to the SHC forum and Ron Koh & Danz for being our photographers.

It was very fun to be able to enjoy with a group of SHCians at the Kelong. If not for my flu, I would have braved the sun and sea breeze to hook some fishes. Though catched no fish, we had lots of fun at the Sibu Island, swimming & playing along the beach. I want to thank Ron Koh for the effort in organising this Kelong Trip. Cheers :)

  5. Hi Tim Kor,

….I thot of StevenC. With his height I wd be able to see how much water my next door neighbur used for her bath.

You better not, otherwise Terence and his Charlie Angels teams will karate you left and right!. LOL.

  6. Hi Tim Kor,

….The kelong was fun as one watched the droppings falling thru the hole in the toilet cubicle and experienced fish-bombing for real.

That relieves my memory of my younger days living in Govt. quarters in K.Lumpur.

At that time, they still use the unsanitary “bucket” system.

Everytime I let go “bombs” , I had to ensure to raise my butts and thighs because sometimes the bucket can be full of urine and it splashes up my butts if left in the sitting position. Serious talk not LOL.

  7. Hi All Kelongers

Agree with Tim wholeheartedly, his descriptions, with fine details, from A2Z, can fill up the whole ferry from bow to stern. For the first time Kelongers, should be a good experience, even it meant no fishes or small fishes. Disappointment in fishing cannot be helped, it would have to depend on several factors, like, season, weather, the correct bites, the hook sizes, and not all areas you can find good fishing ground.

SBKhoo’s giant ice-box had not gone wasted, at least he managed to carry from SIN2SIBU and back 2SIN with the biggest fish intact, congrat.
Luckily not CNY season, otherwise I would have to believe Tim’s story on YUSHENG dish.

Terence lone 2hrs sleep in the open sky, lucky only counting stars or talking to the moon, otherwise mermaids would have appeared from the SIBU seas.

If any Silverhairs would like like to stay longer than 1-3 days, please apply to HOTBOYS for jobs of looking after the kelong, win-win situations, can get time to enjoying fishing in the kelong, and $$$$$.

  8. Hi Tim and other kelongers,

I had a good nap, maybe 2 hours, under the moonlight, counting stars. Luckily, no one pushed me off the kelong.

Think about it, I thought the idea of living on a kelong for 3 months would be a good idea. But, no internet, no cable TV, no newspapers, no aircondition. So, I asked one of the Kelong workers. He said most people stay at the kelong for 2 – 3 days. No one has stayed there for longer than a week.

So I conclude fishing is not a full type retirement activity.

  9. High definition photography of a very professional standard, thank you.

“His family had the wok waiting for him ….”. Yesm they were waiting for him not for his fish. Luckily, Terence tipped SB off and so he spent the nite playing hide-n-seek till Selamat pagi when they shared the garoupa raw and enjoyed the best yusheng ever.

The kelong was fun as one watched the droppings falling thru the hole in the toilet cubicle and experienced fish-bombing for real. I thot of StevenC. With his height I wd be able to see how much water my next door neighbur used for her bath.

If avid fishing hobbyists like the 2 Rons, Andrew Koh, SB, Terence…….were disppointed, that was understandable cos my prayer that the big ones stayed in the dragon palace was answered. They came out waving goodbye with their backsides 7 tails when our overloaded boat pulled out of the rickety jetty.

Some of us went on an island hopping. Sibu Island was a little run-down and the sea was less than crystal clear altho it was still good for a leisurely swim. With 3 young pretty shapely mermaids in bikinis gracing the waters, even the choppy sea behaved and became placid & tranquil. I could not shut my eyes even when a fly perched on my eyelids.

To the hungry like me, the food was good with enough servings to go round the table.

My mattress was a bit damp tho but knowing what a kelong stay was and more importantly who probably slept on it previously, i had no 2nd thots falling asleep after relocating myself to a plank nearer the windy entrance.

(Terence spread-eagled himself outside on the floor and spent hours talking to the moon)

On the whole, the kelong stay was memorable. On a scale of 1-10, I am happy to give it a 7.
