Tibet, Nepal anybody?

Hi folks at SHC.

I wrote a new post yesterday with the above headline but dunno how come it didn’t appear. I had to borrow Charles’ Laos thread to pose the question. Mr Terence Seah has advised me to try again. So here goes:

Wow! Rene Leong has gone to Nepal and planning to go to Tibet next. Lum Fook is planning to go to Nepal next year. Wee Jee is interested to go to these two places as well. It’s so exciting. Charles, Rene, why not plan to go to these places. I bet there’ll be more SHC members who are willing to come along. Right folks?

But a leisurely package lah. I’ve never done any trekking before. The only trekking I’ve done is up to Bukit Timah Hill and through MacRitchie Reservoir. emoticon

With warmest regards

Norhayati

Hi folks. My name is Nur, short for Norhayati. I came across SHC website by chance on 7th April 2008 and decided to join the following day, after reading the many activities organised by the club. I take this opportunity too, to thank Terence for his warm welcome. I’m working in a senior citizens’ home (so, anybody who wants to chope a bed can call me, just kidding). I’m not a nurse, just working in the HR office. I used to enjoy reading (thrillers, legal, criminal and of course romantic love stories) but after being 'diagnosed' as being long-sighted several years ago, I began to cut down on my leisure reading, as I tend to get headache if I put on my reading glasses for too long. Now, I’ve switched to watching Korean series, travelogue and documentaries on television during my free time. I used to travel with friends too but after one by one they got married, I didn’t want to be a lamppost and stopped traveling with them. I’m hoping that by joining SHC, I would be able to make and meet new friends and to join in some of the activities. I may not be able to attend all the activities though, as I’m almost the main caregiver to my 70plus mum (being the only unmarried sibling). Another thing I must confess to. I’m one of those hopeless persons with VERY poor sense of direction. If the activity is being held in Tampines, don’t be surprised if I end up in Clementi!! Don’t be surprised too if you find a foreigner in Singapore probably knows Singapore better than I do. So, please bear with me OK if I need detailed directions of how to reach a certain destination for the activities. My other interests include morning walks on Sundays (I work alternate half day on Saturdays). Want to learn to play badminton like a pro. Right now, I can anyhow hit the shuttle. My 10-year-old niece can play better. So, at the next activity, if you see a tudong-wearing lady, that would be me. I'm looking forward to meet the other members and join in the activities organized by SHC.

  1. Yes, I certainly be interested to do some trekking there. Have to admit that I’m out of shape though. Havent seriously trekked for more than 20 years now. dont even know if my old boots would fit me.

Let me know the date! :)

  2. Helo Yati..can i address u by this?

Wow!…yr post is very interesting indeed..i love to trek…used to do only locally & Msia..but not so far.
I want to join yr leisurely package,if timing is rite for me..so lets see how it goes.
May i know when roughly this trip wud be?

  3. Hi Nor

Selamat berpuasa. I don’t mind being addressed as Yati or Norhayati. The other members already know you as Nor, another Nor will make their kepala pusing.

It’s been my long-time dream to go to Tibet, Nepal (Bhutan, Uzbekistan) but no kakis to come along. I want to go to these places before I’m too old and frail. You selamat. Have done trekking. I’ve never. That’s why I prefer a leisurely package. Sikit2 trekking can lah. So Andrew, no worries lah. We can both trek slowly OK?

Lum Fook wants to go next year. I’m planning to go to Sri Lanka in May / June next year. I failed Geography but that’s near Nepal, right? Maybe can go from there.

Perhaps Rene, Lum Fook or Charles can organize this trip for us now that there are more members wishing to go there? How? Can?

    Regards

    Norhayati

  5. Hi Yati..
Now dah habis berbuka puasa can continue cakap2

how can i forget..been trekking at Magnetic Island in eastern Australia..its nearby my sister’s home…very beautiful island..but i think not as rugged as Nepal or Tibet lah.
Ive gone trekking at Bukit Shah Bandar also in Brunei..

I love the scenaries of the mountains..especially if there’s a lake..can rest & enjoy the serenity & tranquility of the surroundings…hhhmmm..
in short i simply like to jalan2 & explore..u r rite we better do while still ‘young’!..haha

Meanwhile Yati…why dont u join us to Chiangmai camping trip in Nov 20-25..its gonna be much fun with you..think about it :)

  6. Hi Norhayati,

Sri Lanka is at the bottom of India and Nepal is at the very top of India. They are no where ‘close’

About Sri Lanka, very nice place to visit if there is no war there. Thee was a lull in the fighting in 2004, I think and I went there for about 7 days. I would certainly recommend it if the fighting stops. The beaches are beautiful and the water, warm and clear. Shopping is very good in Colombo. I would recommend you to visit the Rock temple, the tea factory hotel, Anudarupa (something like that)

For those interested in Noritake, the is a factory near Colombo which produces the ceramics by the same Japanese original manufacturer. It seems they went to a lot of trouble to ensure the same quality clay was available in that area before they set up the factory. You can buy these ceramics for a fraction of the cost elsewhere and the savings would pay for your trip. But you will have to wait for the fighting to be over first. I did not buy any because it would be a crime to use them in my house with my kids and my maid around. Also we have enough plates but of course not that quality.
    Cheers

  7. “Sri Lanka is at the bottom of India and Nepal is at the very top of India. They are no where ‘close’” That makes India on earth, Nepal in heaven and Sri Lanka…………

Standing on sentosa I look up and see ah-wah-eat-bra-him playing the bottoms up in heavens and in hell I see yoke-do-yoke-no saying no to earthlings buying telephones.

Geographically, or flying a plane, you see no country is up or down another, yeah……………….?

  8. Good morning folks,

Tim, Tim. You always have funny remarks to add lah.
To those interested to go to the two places mentioned. I will try to find out when is the best time to go and let you all know. After fasting month OK.

    Hi Nor,

Actually I’m still keen to go camping in Chiangmai (eventhough I’ve never camped before, serious. I very suaku one) but I just came back from Vietnam (nice place)in August. And then in December I’m planning to go to Myanmar. How? No money leh, everytime go holiday.

    Hi Lilian,

Re – Missing post. Try waiting for several seconds after typing your profile before saving it. Right Mr Seah?

    Warmest regards

    Norhayati

  9. Alamak,Tim,
Nepal, many mountains, so must be at the top. Sri Lanka many beaches, so must be at sea level , so at the bottom lah. Lik dat oso donno. U must travel more and experience more man, world is flat u noe, except for Nepal, Tibet etc.
Travel more, eat more, see more, oso feel more.

  10. Hi Norhayti

Yes, you should go to Tibet before it becomes ‘civilised’. You don’t need half of SHC to go with you if you can’t find a tour – go on your own, not difficult. I went with just one other friend on our own; so that we share costs of hotel, driver/car, guide.

Singaporeans now don’t need visas for China, but you’ll need a special pass for Tibet.

But make sure you’re healthy as the air is rather thin. But Holiday Inn has oxygen tanks on stand-by. Don’t say you don’t need it; you never know!

Any time is cold in Tibet; so you might as well go between mid-Nov and mid-Mar when there is heating in the hotel. There is no heating outside this period!

Maybe can tell you more on 9 Sep? I can’t find where to register for the Monthly Meet!!

  11. Charles-C, got mountains is top and got seas it’s bottom. Our neighbour got mountains got seas so no wonder they have people fighting for the top job and the same people are accused of having a fetish for bottoms…..and you want me to see more and also feel more (necessarily meaning their bottoms), heee, you very the bien tai leh?

  12. Tim,
What’s ‘bien tai leh’? Is it Vietnamese or Thai? You mean I am good-looking, eh? Thanks but others have also told me that. (‘bien’=good, ‘tai’=hamsum or big izit?)
Thanks man, but keep it to yourself, want to be low-key.

  13. “What’s ‘bien tai leh’? ………… You mean I am good-looking, eh? Thanks but others have also told me that”.

Alright alright, my dear Charles, you covet for it so henceforth it’s yours to keep. Correctly, the full title is “Bien Tai Lou” a title which turns the heads more than a Tan Sri ever will………….

  14. Hi Norhayati

Holiday Inn Lhasa used to have piped-in oxygen & mask installed at the bedside in each room but these have been disconnected due to abuse. (One can gets equally sick from too much oxygen).

Tibet is cold in the early morning and after sunset but can get quite hot during the day. Tibetans will remove their robe partially leaving one sleeve dangling off their shoulders which they can slip on anytime it gets chilly like when they are in the shades. Sun-block is necessary in Tibet because you won’t feel the sun until it’s too late. Tibetans who work outdooor, have patchy skin discolouration on their face due to ultra-voilet ray.

Nepal is quite ‘damp’ in the valley where houses have moss growing on lower parts of the walls (being nearer to the ground). But in the mountain, or higher ground, the air is crisp and clear blue sky. Power failure is quite a common occurence. In Kathmandu, one would be joistling with tourists especially back-packers. There are quite alot of things to do in Nepal such as trekking, kayaking, ballooning, hang-gliding, mountain climbing, cycling, etc.

We have no high altitude problem in Nepal but in Tibet, all 3 of us when thru high altitude sickness. Food in Nepal is quite ‘Indian’ like so it’s ok. But in Tibet, it’s dry or greasy yak’s meat, yak’s tail soup, yak’s milk & butter, ….. >,< Due to the recent Olympic, visa is now required to enter China. Tibet being under China, and being a restricted zone means, special permit (on top of visa) is required from the Chinese authority. For Nepal, unless you are a Nepalese or India national, visa is required. Have fun. :)

  15. Yati..
U never go camping even at east coast beach?..so kesian:)
Come with us to Chiangmai lah..cancel yr Myanmar trip in Dec!haha…Next year we go together..nak tak!..deal?

  16. Boy, boys. No need to quarrel OK.

Nor, I stayed overnight at the beach, open air, no tent m-a-n-y years ago but dunno where. When colleagues ajak, ikut aja. That time still very very young.

re – canceling Myanmar and going to Chiang Mai. Hmmmm, I’m thinking, I’m thinking. So many places to go but not enough leave and money. Ha ha ha.

LilyHo, Dolly & SeokCheng, thanks for the useful information about Tibet, Nepal and visa. Appreciate it.

Hi SeokCheng, would love to hear more from you about Tibet on 9th Sept. Unfortunately however, I will not be attending. How to register yourself for the meet? Let me see, you have to log on first, go to “Choose your Category”, click to SHC Monthly Gatherings, click View, scroll down to 9 Sept and then click on Comments right at the bottom right hand corner. An empty box will appear for you to type that you’re coming. I hope it works.

    Alicia, noted your interest.

    Warmest regards

    Norhayati

  18. Thanks, Norhayati. We were going to just ‘walk in’ when we couldn’t register.

By the time you finish deliberating and go to Tibet (after the Olympics / Paralympics) you won’t need visas to China.

Yah, I forgot that it’s your fasting month. You can always email at lishuqing2002@yahoo.com.sg

    Have a good weekend!

  19. Hi Nor,

I think you meant Muslim culture kan? Not Malay.

Wah you so good ah. Can sleep until so late. I’m an early bird lah. Sleep early, wake up early.

After talking to colleagues who know me very well, they think I’d better try camping for several nights in East Coast first. They don’t think I can rough it up in Chiangmai as I’m not the rugged sort. Wait nampak semut or small insects crawling, I’ll be running for my life. That was why when I suggested Nepal or Tibet, it was for a leisurely package (still in hotel :)). So, I think I would have to give Chiangmai a miss. Don’t angry OK? You all enjoy the camping while I might consider going short break to Desaru on 8 & 9 Nov, heheee.

    Hi SeokCheng,

    Who is lishuqing2002?

    Warmest regards

    Norhayati

  20. hi Yati..

gonna be as rugged as u imagine…Terence will be there ..so no worries lah…

U very cute…lishuqing2002 must be her secret name!…haha

  21. Hi Nor

Ya lah. I rarely switch on the computer when I’m at home. Sometimes I wonder if I’m keeping a white elephant in my room. Usually on weekends I try to keep mum company. Bual2, chit chat etc. She pun dah uzur.

You know, that’s sweet of you to ask me to come along, knowing I’ve never been to a camp before. It’s OK. You go ahead and have a fun time in Chiangmai.

Next trip we go Tibet together OK. You bring sambal belachan, I bring cup noodles and biscuits.

lishuqing2002 is a secret name? OH!!! the emailadd that appeared on my email not the same, that’s why I asked.
