Monthly walk: Sat 14Feb

Dear SHCians!

14th February….. Let’s think about love and friendship.  A Japanese once told me that in Japan it is also referrred to as Tomo-choko (???)
Tomo meaining friend; choko meaning chocolate.  Got the ‘hint’? …make this a Memorable Valentine’s Day!       emoticon

You are invited to a KOOL date….. to explore our Singapore’s latest downtown icon; the 1st reservoir in the heart of the city!
the magnificient MARINA BARRAGE!

This unique 3-in-1 provides:
1)  Water supply — will increase our local water supply source,
2)  Flood control — being a dam built across the Marina Channel to keep out seawater and
3)  New Lifestyle attraction — ideal for all kinds of recreational activities; set to become an integrated watersports hub and
premier tourist attraction.

A WALK THAT IS DIFFERENT !  An opportunity to        emoticon
(i)  "Walk on Water" by crossing the dam across the Marina Channel.
(ii) "Stand on a Green Roof"  to view our city skyline with the sea as your backdrop; definitely, a view with a great difference!
(iii) "Stroll in the park"  enjoy the fountains in the open central courtyard, watch kids running through the community water playground.
(iv)  an intriguing gallery awaits….. must try, must see…
(v)  have a "Picnic at the Barrage"  ….BYO picnic basket.  Yes, it is allowed but NO Littering & CLEAN UP! before you leave.

Date: Saturday, 14 February 2009   (in case, you didnt get the date right …) haha

Leaders for this walk: ChristinaCL Chan & Charles Chua

Duration:  less than 2hours; you may stay as long as you wish but, do catch the Last Bus out.
**Last Bus from Marina Barrage: 9.00pm

Meeting Point & Time: Entrance to Marina Barrage Main Lobby at 4.30pm sharp.

Though the Barrage is completed; the area directly around it is still under heavy construction.  I had recced this place 3x.  There are
shady roads but I believe no one would want to walk along the dusty roads where trucks with sand, stones rumbled past….
So, for the safety of all, take the MRT!

How to get there:
MRT Station:  Marina Bay, EXIT B, walk straight out, turn right to the Pick-up stop to board the Free shuttle bus service to Marina Barrage.
The shuttle is approx at 10 minute intervals, subject to traffic conditions.

Those who drive:
from ECP Exit 17A;
from AYE Exit 18;
from Cross Street/Central Boulevard;
from Maxwell Road/Marina Boulevard(NTUC Centre);

THEN travel on…. Marina Station Road/Marina Place/Marina Mall/Marina Grove/Marina way to Marina Barrage entrance/carpark. Free parking.

What to bring:

Your camera!
A shawl or something to keep you warm, might get chilly at sundown.
Sun visor or cap(hold on to it, lest it is blown away).  There are shades but one might not get a good view.
Bring umbrellas, but hold on to it lest it is blown away!

NOTE:
A cafe serves light snacks & from Sundown it will be a pub with ‘live’ music & serves finger food.
A restaurant serves ala carte dinner.

Sure I get the hint. Eat chocolate, I get constipation. “Eat” a friend such as you, you’ll get stuck on the way out of me and so where I go you go…..yes, very memorable and hopefully you’re malleable enough for me to pull out finally…heeeheee.

Will make an effort to join you all………………..

  9. Hahaha!!

What to do if lightning strikes? Make sure the tallest SHC member is there to act as a lightning conductor.

Food to be brought along? Must tag along with those who have brought a picnic basket.

Caroline: chi kee koo chi kee? Only for those who can fend off the hungry wolves from the picnic baskets.

Valentine’s Day Walk? All attendees must hold hands with a partner during the walk except don’t hold hands with the lightning conductor.

  10. CC

Hahaha my picnic basket, together with all the goodies got stolen. Must see what and how much I can pack into my backpack since we are going for a walk first.

    Rgds – Sarah

  17. #34 MaureenL, thanks for the info, hope you can make it as the place is beautiful & also to enjoy a great evening with many SHCians.
As for heights, worry not, stand a distance from the railings you can still have a marvellous view of our city skyline.

    Cheerio!

  18. Christina,

I don’t know who you are referring. Aren’t you all my ‘kawan’ ? I think it is more appropriate
for Maureen and I to have someone who will support us incase our legs go soft, right ? Any volunteers ? he he…

  19. To the lady who adds an “i” in her bra……….anything about you that is soft, soft legs included, you can count on me to upport…………

  20. Hey Maureen
I’m not accepting any text from you this time cause I’m going to see you there. It’s been quite sometime since and it’s high time too. C ya.

Thanks Christina. Am wondering what or whom I’m hiding from? Mmm…. Maybe you know me better than me?

    Hello Mary
Recall your very kind welcome when I first came on board. Shall look out for the beauty I hear so much of. See you then.

  21. Hi Daisy Yeo
Thank you for the generous compliment. I will keep a lookout for you too. I think we should all wear our name tags at the walk too, so we can identify each other right?

    EOs and Christina
What say you? Name tags will help a lot.

  22. Hi, Can’t join you all. Work calls but thought just mentioned it – those driving there, park lots rather limited. But … still, enjoy your walk@marina barrage.

  23. Hi EOs,

Am I right to say that this WALK at the Marina Barrage is not so much of walking but rather strolling & viewing the surrounding. From MAS building and in my office, I could see the whole of Marina South is under heavy constructions and blocking, no path or road for you to walk leh. My colleague said after 5.00 pm, it is very scenic and relaxing to sit around to munch potato chips, keropok, peanuts or crunch an apple. See you all this Sat, A WALK THAT IS DIFFERENT ! :)

    Ah Nee

  24. “……………..this WALK at the Marina Barrage is not so much of walking but rather…….viewing the surrounding. From MAS building…………I could see the whole of Marina South ………no path or road for you to walk leh………”

Ok, ANee, this is what you can do since you’re used to seeing from height and viewing the surroundings.

Find 2 longer than long stilts many times the height of MAS bldg (where to find them is a problem tho). Tie each to your legs (how to stand up after tying is another problem) and since you dont fancy walking you can stand to look and admire everything…..and you’ll see Abel and his gang unable to reach a deal with pretties at the doorsteps of their Tg Balai hotel. With such long stilts, one stride you’ll be standing in front of their hotel helping them in their bargain………..and one step back and you’re home again.

As a fun past-time, you can trap planes flying btwn yr stilts or join Danz & his dancers in an innovated version of the fox-trot called the zombie bounce…….then nobody needs to circle round the bamboo circus to do the laughing exercise. Heeeheee………….

  25. #43 DaisyY, there are a few Daisies but only 1 DaisyYeo, so I think I know you but not well {smile} and you would not be hiding from the sun/rain… how about MIA?
Glad you are in the walk :D

    Cheerio!

  26. #55 LTan, thanks for the reminder.

Yes, the carpark is considered small. I hope not many of you will drive, if you do, wish to suggest “car-pool”.
Also, not sure if you are allowed to park along the road & also I would not recommend it with all the on-going construction!

    Cheerio!

  27. #46 MaryC, thanks for the suggestion.

If you are comfortable to wear the name tags, go ahead; I will leave it to individuals to decide as
    1) this is an outdoor activity
    2) we are gathered in a public attraction

Honestly, the registration is beyond my expectation.
    THANKs much everyone!

    Cheerio!
    ChristinaCL Chan

  28. #60 Ah Nee,

    Bingo! you are right.

I did say “a walk that is different!” {smile} I will endeavor to provide a brief background and will try my best to ensure that ALL who are present will enjoy at least the 4 pointers I had mentioned PROVIDED all of you follow my directional signs — all will get to walk. :D

    c u!

    Cheerio!

  29. Dear All,

have noted your registrations, quite some new faces I sure have many names/faces to remember good exercise for my eyes/brain… hahahaha
    shall update your names later….

    THANKs MUCH!

    Cheerio!

ah ha AnnTo glad you are joining the walkers!

    Thanks :D

    Cheerio!
    ChristinaCL Chan

  31. Dare I say it?

Please put my name down for the walk but… it’s tentative!

I will be tagging along with anyone who’s got food… holding hands? Depends on what food…

  32. #72 RosalindK, you are in! c you!

#73 RogerL, thanks for info; no worries, there is always another walk. C you sometime, somewhere…

    Cheerio!
    ChristinaCL Chan

  33. Dear All,

suggest to linger till the lights are up! My friends had shown me some photos of the night scene @ Marine Barrage! Lovely!

    Bring a good/professional camera!

I didnt want to state this earlier …. fyi Gallery Cafe MIGHT have a surprise or sth special for couples celebrating Valentine! So, pop in!
ps: I am not promoting for the cafe, hor :D

Unfortunately, the restaurant do not have any special menus and I personally find their steamboat menus very pricey!

    Cheerio!
    ChristinaCL

  34. #55 #63 Those who drive

Just found this info but unable to check if it is still valid, or the carparks are blocked by constructions, so park at own risk….

    Marina Car Park A is located near Marina Park Drive; near Marina Mall;
Marina Carp Park B is located 0.1 kilometre away from Marina Mall; 0.2 kilometre away from Marina Grove

    Cheerio!

  44. Hi Christina

  45. Dear All,

  46. #102 CG, it was my pleasure… glad you make the effort to find the way there despite the misdirection from passers-by. I like that spirit!

Many people in Spore(not only Sporeans) are not aware of MB and/or how to get there… Schools are bring the students so it is good to go there now before it gets crowded! :)

    Thanks!
    ChristinaCL Chan

  47. #103 Oi Cheng, thanks for uploading the photos. I have yet to view them as had problems with my pc….

I wish to thank the photographers: Charles Wee, CJ, Kim Seng and Boon Liang for sharing his photos.

    Thanks much!
    ChristinaCL Chan

  48. Dear MaryC,

I just wish to touch base with you ….After we spoke and you mentioned that you will make another round of the 6 Galleries to find that ‘fun’ place I had mentioned…

Later, I went into the Galleries, to my surprise they were all well lit up. I visited MB twice last year, the lightings were much “dimmed” so when one arrived at #5 the feelin was different…as you try to look for familiar sites & stepped onto glass panels! followed by chuckles and screams :D
Perhaps some has complained about the dimness.. sorry, not fun anymore.

The other where you can snap a foto & emailed: it was ‘hogged’ by students… no chance to try :D

Well, hope you and all did enjoy MB.

    Cheerio!
    ChristinaCL Chan

  49. Christina C.

The walk was fun and informative. Now that you’ve explained I can understand why I thought I had missed the ‘fun’ place you mentioned. Yes, it was too brightly lit up and the excitement was taken out of it. I actually breezed right through that indoor section.

Anyway, it was an interesting kind of walk, especially the outdoors. The view from the top of the ‘spiral walk’ and the barrage was lovely. It was windy and surprisingly cool that day.

I think I missed one part which was at the lower end of the spiral walk, somewhere where the fountain and frolicking kids were. I only noticed it when I was viewing the photos.

Thanks for organising another great event Christina. You took the trouble to recci the place and even gave us a pre-walk description of the place! You are a fantastic EO!
