  1. Dan
It was thoughtful of you to include my “Golf Card Game” in your list. Now that you have included the game, I guess I will have to give you support right? Ha ha.
I will keep that date free and will be there.
One concern though. Do they allow card games and board games to be played there? The space is quite narrow and there are not many tables.

  2. Mary,

The lunch is the primary event, as for those coming for the board or card games we should be able to occupy enough tables. After lunch hours there will hardly by any crowd.

    Dan

  3. Dan

If the lunch can be confirmed at $7/-,
many of us may be interested.
    Simplicity without too much fanfare
    because of the other stallholders.

  4. Lee Patrick,

Yes, lunch confirmed at $7.00. The drinks will be ordered from the coffee stall. Therefore the business will not be generated from the lunch and dessert alone!

    Dan

  5. Dan,
As what Mary #3 said, the place is really quite narrow with table limitations and we may offend the other stall owners as the place will be almost full with SHC members shd the response be good and it won’t be fair to the other stall owners. Don’t forget, it can be quite a noisy crowd, so better check first. Unlike Hans, we could almost have one corner to ourselves and the public could still use the other side – just don’t want Anne to be black-listed for housing us.
Await your feedback before confirming attendance. Rgds, Lisa

  6. Nina Choo#11,

you must learn to play the Rummikub, it’s a very nice game, good for Silver Hairs, I pick up this game at the 17June gathering, thank to Lydia.

  7. Yeap, Dan, Lisa is rite abt space constraints at Adonais. It reli 2 small 2 hse boardgames there n m sure other stall owners will definitely upset wif this kind of arrangement without prior notis given 2 them. Of cos unless, $7 food can oso by extended 4 us 2 patronise at their respective stalls. Give a serious tots on this first. Cheers.. Dolly

  8. Sorry Dan,
I didn’t register myself for this event and doubt that I will be able to make it to the lunch, let alone man the Upwords Board game. Must have been a mistake so could you please de-register me. Thank you.

  9. Hi Nina,

Dun worry, Mary will be on hand to teach Golf card games. You may also have opportunity to learn Big two or Rummikub as Eileen suggested.

Lee Patrick, i shall be glad to entertain you with a game of chess. I am the current undisputed champion for chess and looking forward for more challengers!

Eileen Thean, do I get that you are coming?

Thanks Dolly/Lisa, appreciate your concern. Will get Anne to try and confirm our being able to utilise the tables and chairs. Rest assured that we will be patronising the drink stall for hot and cold drinks. If the response is good we will open up for member attending to patronise other stalls.

Our previous responses to Board games session has been poor. We started first with a kopitiam at Ang Mo Kio, and then at Kovan CC, and only a handful showed up.

The gatherings at Roxy Square was to introduce Anne Chua’s stall to SHC member and also to have our board games which have been inactive for a while because of poor attendance.

Amy, noted that you are not able to join us.

    Dan

  10. Dan, pardon me but no offence. I recalled dat u had done this b4 and by doing so now again is considered advertising which is not allowed in SHC website. YK/Terence, correct me if I m wrong. It must b solely for gathering sake dat u r arranging this, if not, both YK n me will definitely get bombard by pte emails from other members citing double-std which I hope not 2c dat… Dolly

  11. Dolly,

As I recalled, when William Seah put up his stall at Old Airport Rd, there was no one coming forward to question him because he is a member of SHC. Some of us even take the trouble to patronise his stall!

Wat wrong with having our Board Game Lunch gathering at Roxy Square? I have mentioned my difficulties in getting good response to out previous sessions. Whether it is at Roxy or for that matter at Han’s, the intention was not to advertise but making effort to get member to come together!

    Dan

  12. I may add, is having a Special lunch at Imperial Shark Fin restaurant as organised by James Tan not constitute advertising. The owner of the restaurant is not our member whereas Anne Chua is and she also help to create name tags for some of us!

    Dan

  13. Hi Dan

I surely would like to be a permanent member if there is a board game club in SHC. Meanwhile, please register me for this gathering. i’ll bring some board game which is not on your list.

    fris

  14. Was it advertising or was it an effort of a member bringing to notice (again, if you like) the good food a fellow member is selling? It’s a tough call as much as it wasnt easy to rule that the posting of one’s mobile number is discouraged, nay prohibited.

The pro ban people will argue that if advertising is allowed, it will lead to people joining SHC for the wrong reason and subvert its cause in due course. You just dot have space enough for an avalche of advertisements which might degenerate into folks promoting all kinds of everything.

On the other hand, isnt it the purpose of SHCians to help each other – mindful that we’re all silverhairs with opportunities to compete for the bacon few and limited? Cant we leave it to SHCians to decide for themselves whether to patronise the stalls/stores put up? Or to pick an ice with them.

I have no answer as I am less opiniated today. So, I tossed a coin for the answer – a $1 coin – and it rolled to the feet of a pretty wearing very short skirts. Although the coin is worth a lot to me, dare I pick it up without looking up to say thank you?

So, I still dont have an answer. It’s now opened to the floor…………and whoever comes up with an answer that meets consensus is entitled to pick up my coin and keep it.

  15. Hi Frisna,

Glad you could join us, we are curious as to wat board games you will be sharing with us. I wonder what you mean by permanent member?

Tim, you can be as vocal as you used to be. Thanks for attempting to clarify our stand with regard to helping one another.

    Dan

  16. This world is getting very complicated. H1N1 is scaring many into behaving strangely. This fella, who wrote in somewhere to complain, appeared to be happier if her spouse had actually caught the virus so that she wdnt hv wasted the money spent in calling the ambulance and at the A&E. Cd it be a case of her believing that once a person has lived thru the virus, one will develop antibodies to fight H1N1?

Precautions and preventive measures are everywhere but the infection rate has actually climbed & climbed rapidly so? Will it peak closer to year end when major exams are held, and so those who hv prepared round the year for the tests will hv to hold back their sneezes even if a monkey tickles their moses with its tail?

I am afraid we are living in a world increasingly kiasi, kiasu culminating in people afraid to kia lai kia ki without wearing some masks or other protection…….and then with their faces almost fully covered, another fear will come to scare…….is this fella a terrorist?

I believe in fate, that a different script is written to be acted out by each of us altho we can always temper our acting with some kindness and thoughtfulness for others. To me, taking my regular bath and observing personal hygiene is enough.

Then, we also read of adult children whacking their parents with hammers, flowerr pots.

Professional counselling took roots some 3 decades ago and the counselling biz has since boomed. The respected and feared cane was consigned to the bins, and counsellors hv had a field day since.

When counselling was new, and against the pain of a cane beating the butt, the kids listened. Then, the young who never knew what magic a cane cd do, started to talk back and louder than the counsellors.

These kids are brave but they are also the first to snatch a mask to cover their noses. We have many brave kiasis among our young. Yes, a new generation of bravehearts but weak noses to behold.

Talk too much today bcos wont hv a computer after 2mrw. Sleepy, koon liao…………

  17. Dan, u got ur point and likewise I got mine. We c at different eye level.

Both William and Anne did put up a post on their business, of cos, at different intervals, but I dun recalled any 1 questioned them also. Members also patronised these stalls.

Watever la, fully agreed wat Tim had quoted, let the members decide… Dolly

  18. Hi all,

Thank you all for the interest in making this effort to have the gathering at Roxy Square-Adonai. Dan, thank you too for your sharing with the others on Adonai as well which I sincerely appreciate your goodwill which I hope Dolly #18, I personally do not think this is to advertise on Adonai as I have put up my post earlier on to welcome anyone who happens to be in the East or truly want to make that special trip to visit me, as a SHC’s member.
Do not get Dan wrong and I seriously do not want anyone to think this is my way of advertising as well.
Thanks Tim #22 for that ‘super’ balancing of yes and no philosphy….let this be a mind-cracking haha…

Coming back, I have spoken to Dan on the possibility of having Roxy Square as another alternate gathering (sometimes it is good to have a change of place for gathering) and I shall leave Dan to follow up with the topics I have shared with him earlier but just that I can’t keep my fingers away from clarifying the fact that the gathering is not for advertising. Mind you, it is not easy to co-ordinate such events, especially to think about having the place right, time right, and more importantly to get everyone right!

For any other enquiries, I can be reached at everson_theblueplace@hotmail or adonaisd@gmail.com

    Thanks and best regards,

    Anne C

  19. Anne
To quote you : “and more importantly to get everyone right”

Each individual is unique in style, character, likes, dislikes, opinions, so it will be a mammoth task to get ‘everyone right.’

Let discretion be the better part of valour.

Put it simply, SHC members who wish to patronise your stall are most welcome. Due to the foodcourt setting of the place, SHC members are at ease to patronise other stalls if they so wish. Not to be seen as a monopoly by other stall owners. It is a public entity. We can still maintain the fellowship of SHC camaraderie.

Hope the impasse is unlocked. My personal opinion.

  20. Frisna
Good you are joining in. Could you please bring along the deck of cards I left with you at the SHC June monthly meeting? Then we can have more Golf Card games.
    Cya :-)

  21. Dan
I think the choice of food should be left to each individual as there may be some who want to participate in the camaraderie and games but who don’t particularly like pasta?
No offence meant to and no intention of taking business away from Anne Chua, but I do have a soft spot for the laksa there, haha.
In this way, perhaps more people may turn up?

  22. Mary,

Lee Patrick has also suggested to allow us to patronise the other stalls. I am sure Anne is open to it since it is in a foodcourt setting.

This is our first attempt to hold the board games here, whether is is viable or not depend on the responses!

I once operate a stall here, during lunch break I invited all my chess kakis to play chess with me. Unfortunately, we closed shop after three months!

As I try to explain before, when Chess Cafe was started the attendance as poor. Next we came up with the Board Game Cafe at Kovan CC, turnout was again disapointing. Now I am trying a different ball game and hope that our member will give your support and not hankering after wat should be and wat should not!

    Dan

  23. Hi Danz,

    I’ll come and support.
Chinese chess is my favorite but have to admit haven’t play
    for donkey years.
I can try out English chess too though must admit I’m very
    poor in this game.

  24. Hello hello everyone, I’ve not been reading the SHC website and really surprised to read so many comments abt a simple gathering which was meant to be a fun occasion.
If I may add my 2-cents worth, let’s all focused on the purpose of this meet i.e. “Boardgames Lunch Gathering” right? I’d like to believe that each of the members who have contributed their comments are either just doing their job or concerned, so just sharing their thoughts. So, in my own personal opinion, let’s all just get on with the decision and confirm if the venue is fixed and those interested to join, just sign up, now that most of us have said our piece. It’s a free world so let’s not all get stressed up and enjoy, smile and have a good time!
Dan, sorry I can’t confirm my attendance just yet as my father-in-law is critically ill so will play by ear for now. Have a good day everyone! Remember, “Life Is Short Anyway”, so Enjoy and Be Happy!!(by the way, that’s the acronym for my name, LISA), Smile and be Happy Always ok? Lisa

  25. Hi Dan,

Aiyah ! So damn hot today 36C :( after returning from a lunch buffet at Kushin-bo at Jurong point.

I will join you all for a game of Scrabble.
Hope the place is NOT too noisy or deafening like Hans at South Bridge Rd.

I need a quiet place to unwind , relax and chit chat about the birds and the bees. Ha! ha! :)

  26. Just had our sumptuous lunch buffet at Kuishin-bo with some friends and still feeling heavy.

For your info to those who had not been , Kuishin-bo is a trendy Japanese restaurant at JP2 that serve sushi , sea food including generous servings of crayfish, salmon, tuna, scallops, mussels, fruits, desserts and a wide variety of Japanese delicious delicacies with Jap green tea free flow and has more variety than Sake Sushi etc.

Highly recommended with good ambiance and food is moe tak theng :) but DON’T overeat, cos’ do not want to end up like Micheal Jackson with a cardiac arrest. :(

  27. Hi all,

I have no problem with you guys patronizing from other stalls. In fact, this has been my worry that if you qll only patronize from Adonai, it will defintely start other tongues wagging. Please feel free to have other choices, no worries..just looking forward meeting you guys is good enough…

    Regards,

    AnneC

  28. Hi James,

Thanks for your support, I know that Albert Tan is a chinese chess player too. He’s actually been asking around looking for an opponent!

Thanks Lisa for your understanding, we hope that your father-in-law will recover soon. Yes life is short, let make the most of it!

Steven, glad to hear from you. Let’s hope for more Scrabble players to join you.

So dear members, we are free to patronise other stalls. We are looking forward to more member to come join in the fun!

    Dan

  29. Dan
Don’t get me wrong. I took a look at the responses and made my suggestion only with the intention of helping. I wasn’t “hankering after…..” :-(
My idea was that more people might be motivated to attend if the choice of food was widened.

  30. Mary,

You are the first to indicate your coming for the lunch and card game and I appreciate that, the hankering was certainly not directly at you. Anne herself felt bad if we dun patronise the other stalls.

Yes, given more choices of foods the appeal would be wider. There’s a wanton mee stall that I go everytime I come here!

    Dan

  31. Hi Dan,

I am coming to join everybody for the Board Games on July 25. Am game to play an International English chess game with anyone. Except for Dan, anyone who plays with me and wins will get a plate of sphagetti (right spelling?) or wantan noodle. I have a small cute chess set and will bring it along.

    Terence Seah

  32. Hi Terence,

Good to have you around, we can have beer while playing chess. I also want to put a challenge to anyone who take me on and wins will get a can of beer!

Now, how else can we make it more challenging for fellow member to attend? At our age, any kind of games is good to stimulate the mind and help us to stay sane, ha ha!

    Dan

  33. Hi Terence,

Just an aside, I heard that you mention On-line tutoring before. Right now i am looking at teaching chess on-line, all we need is to get a skype account and webcam.

On a larger scale perhaps we can get interested member to meet and discuss the capital and logistics required. On hand we already have a handful of teachers. We would also need to have a website to advertise the kind of classes we are conducting.

let’s this be our own business run by SHC members. We welcome all those interest to join and brain-storm further. I am presently looking at a website that provide these services in certain countries. Will share further when we meet!

    Dan

  34. Hieee everyone!

I have spoken to the coffee shop owner and he welcome you guys in as I have spoken to him on the gathering. So, do make yourself free on that day as he has also prepare to send in more helpers to attend to you all too!

    Seeing you all soon…

    Regards,

    AnneC

  35. Aiyah, Mary, the participants are less than 15, please dont back down or else not enough people to play the games (yes, i will return your card).

Dan, I have several board games not listed on your list (e.g. reversi/othello, Fill or Bust, Battleship, backgammon etc) but looking at the attendance, may I just join the scrabble, rummikub or golf without bringing any game myself?

  36. Hi Dan,

It has been quite some time I didn’t attend SHC functions.
I will make sure to attend this time at 50, East Coast Road.

Commit me to the lunch. For board games Chinese Chess.

Where can I meet to pay you the $7.00 before 25/07/09?

    Regards,
    Chew Wai Jin

  37. BOTH English and Chinese Chess for me, not “effectively bilingual” but can survive lah. LUNCH @ 7 bucks? Why not? Some food for thoughts to complement the mind-boggling games. Count me in. Hi namesake, long time no see – and play. See u on the 25th.

    Dan

  49. Hi Rene Leong #68, Lilian #72, Maggie #73

Sorry for the late reply…has been quite busy the last few days…real real tired….surely I will welcome all SHC to join in the Board Games at Roxy Square…looking forward to seeing you Rene….

Just a brief direction to the Coffee Shop where the Board Game is going to be held :

    Direction 1
Adonai is at Roxy Square 1 which is along East Coast Road. If you are taking public transport, Roxy Square is between EastGate and Katong Village (where the HK teahouse is or you are aware where the Samy Fish Head Curry used to be). However, if you are taking public transport coming from town thereafter Mountbatten, then alight at the bus stop just after Katong Shopping Centre, cross the escalatored overhead bridge, walk, take that escalator down, make a turn back, the first coffee shop you spot, should be the right one.. Adonai has put up a sign just outside the coffee shop facing out so should be no problem.
Carpark is accessible just when you see Katong Village then the HK teahouse, turn to the left after that, you will be able to see an open air carpark.

    Direction 2
If you are coming along Marine Parade Road (which you will see Parkway Parade, and if you are taking public transport, make your way toward the Mercure Hotel (Roxy Square 2) into the shopping mall, walk all the way out, the coffee shop is the last before you hit out of the shopping mall at Roxy Square 1.
If you are driving, either from ECP, exit out to Marine Parade road, drive along until you hit the first junction, turn to your left thereafter keep to your right, turn out to Joo Chiat Road, drive along until you see Katong Mall on your left, make a turn, as usual, make your way to the carpark as per Direction 1. You should need further direction, please email me at everson_theblueplace@hotmail to get me contact number or otherwise, you can get it from either Dan, Maggie or Paul Kong for it….till then..thank you all for making that day special for Board Game…till then…ta ta

    Best Regards,

    AnneC

  52. Hi Susan,

See you for lunch tomorrow, seems you have the day all planned out. Some of us will also be adjourning to the monthly gathering to continue our board games over there.

Lisa, hope it okay for some to play board games at the canteen?

    Dan

  53. Hi Ng Ah Lek,

Your name sounds very familiar and welcome to our club. Were you a teacher from Outram Sec. School ?
The teaching staff called you Ah Lek, Ah Lek and you called me Ah Fatt , Ah Fatt .

You told me once you did not enjoy traveling overseas as you said it is a waste of money.

    Are you the one ????

  54. Dan..my (added) tuition lesson finishes at 12.30pm tomolo. Take about an hour to reach Katong (from Bishan)

Please EXCLUDE me for lunch. WILL BE there for the chess games.

  55. The Board games at Roxy Square did not happened as planned as the place was quite crowded and there hardly room to move about. My apology that we could only savour the foods and have to adjourn to Ghim Moh for the Board games.

It was nice having Terence with us and to meet some new members for lunch. They are Nina Choo, Pearl Goh, Angie Ng, Chew Wai Jin, an International and Chinese chess player,June Lee Siew Moi and her husband Philip Tan, Maureen Lee, Eileen Thean, Anne Chee and Richard Lian, the only chess player who can give me a run for my money!

Except for all other games mentioned we did not get a chance to play Rummikub and Big Two card games. Of the 17 members who signed and turned up we have are glad to have 8 gate-crashers!

    Dan
