Anybody interested in joining me on a walk around Pulua Ubin?

Venue : Pulua Ubin

I am planning a short walk, passing through the herb garden, inland ponds, kampong, look out for hornbills on the way and end back at the Ubin jetty for coconut drinks and lunch.  Not too strenous – bring water, hat, umbrella, cameras, wear light clothing.

  1. Hi Conrad (comrade)
Please include me in the walk with nature. The serenity of the open and the leisure pace of walk is totally refreshing.
The joy of the natural environment enlivens our elements.
Thank you for organising this walk.

  2. Mmmm…this looks interesting. Had been ages since I last visited Pulau Ubin. What’s the cut-off date for registration for this walk? Please advise. Thank you.

  3. helo Conrad(cute name!)
U only cater for ‘bo-chokang’ people ah?..apa macam,nx round u organise on a saturday la..then more ppl will stroll..now only the boys follow…no girls no fun u know!..hee

Steven,ya lah..ride bike is better,we can also walk when need to & want to rest our ‘pamelo’…haha

  4. Hi Conrad,
Any possibility of changing the PU walk to Tuesday or Wed a.m? If not, I’ll try to reschedule my Mon a.m. commitment and let you know the outcome. Where do we assemble? time?

This is an interesting and enjoyable ramble. Sure hate to miss it. Thanks for organizing :)

    Cheers,

  5. Ok..not very good at this..can someone tell me how to make a participant list? So far we have:
    1. Lim Tian Soo
    2. Lee Patrick (Song Juan)
    3. Marilyn Tang

Thanks for coming along. We can meet at bus no 2 terminal near POSB ATM. Early birds can join me at the nasi lemark stall for breakfast, say 8.30 am. Quite good. Appreciate the company.

#2 Steven – I am OK either way but am mindful that some may not know how to cycle. Ubin could be difficult for beginner cyclists – plenty of slope and unpaved tracks. Let’s see who turn up on that day and if all are comfortable to cycle.

#4 Ivan – I am easy. Say Wed 4 Nov.

#5 Hi Norlinda – No lah. “Wa wu-chokang”. Happen that I am on long leave in Nov and I thought it would be interesting to organize a small group walk. Also am trying to add vibrancy with weekday outing. Will think about organizing a weekend trip another time.

#6 Jassmine – I have other appointments for rest of week. My apology.

  6. Hi Conrad,

This sounds interesting. Haven’t been to P Ubin for ages and would be interesting to go back again and perhaps bring back memories. I will keep myself free for this trip. Pl count me in.

    Andrew Koh

  7. Ivan #4

    Hope you can come.
We can get real Tonic water to go with our Gin, unlike in Padang. Changi Village Nasi Lemak with Gin and Tonic… must try.
Also Tonic water from F&N contain Quinine, so we don’t have to worry about contracting Malaria from the mozzies in Ubin. I’ll fill my water bottle with the real thing and you carry the ice box.

  8. Hi Tian Soo,
Ahhh….I ran out of Bombay Sapphire Gin, will a bottle of Camus VSOP helps? If yes, I can bring it along………. provided I am going for the hike……still many days to 09Nov.
If Camus VSOP not OK, have to check my store again….to see if other Gin is available (may be there is a Gordon somewhere in the store room).

  9. Hi Conrad,

Please include me in this walk. I need the physical exercise.

This is a long walk, so please walk slowly otherwise I will not last for 3 hours.

    Thanks & Cheers

    Bernie

  10. Conrad & all walkies/cyclists

Hhhmmm…pretty interesting walk cum cycle activity in an old Ubin island!
Though we’ve been there many times..even we had our cycling day there b4..i still love to go there..nice & serene place to hang out..very kampong,nostalgic..

TianSoo/Ivan..u can makan your nasi lemak plus ur drinks under the coconut tree at the island by the beach..more cooling & breezy than the warm & hot ChangiV foodcourt ..just pack the makan2 & bring along in your backpack..sound fun rite?
I & others can drink coconut juice…just to accompany & chit chat..like in the kampong environment…

Well…that’s my dream only, very sum yok yok2 to take leave le…but then,
im taking off on 2Nov (KL trip on weekend)..13 & 16Nov for pre & post Batam getaway…apa macam?…so busy bo chokang,if kena sack..bo looi to enjoy life!…hahaha :)

Anyway you all have a pleasant outing..perhaps next time we can jalan2 together…pluck durians & rambutans!

Ok..now feel like going to hv some swings at MarinaBay,any golf beginners
    wanna come?…Dolly,Bira,AhNee & pro LinChuah?..hehe..
I din forget YoonChin…cos u are shunning away from the sun for beauty theraphy rite…haha

    OOppss!..sori Conrad..curi your thread.better cabot!

  11. Hi Conrad @# 8,

Thanks for reply. Will confirm whether can go or not asap. Can sing “I love to go a-wondering, along the Ubin tracks…”? Will frighten off the hornbills there or not?……….lol!

    Cheers :)

  12. Hi Conrad,

Need to borrow your thread. Thanks!

    Hi Ivan and Tian Soo,

I enjoy gin and tonic besides wine. My favourite gin is Beefeater and tonic is Schweppes.

I like my drink to be strong, thus heavy on the gin with a dash of Cointreau, top off with tonic water. For added shiokness, I would chill my glass in the freezer before making the drink.

I rather like Bombay Sapphire for the oomphh but Beefeater for the bouquet, dry and crisp and the lingering after taste. I add Cointreau for the zing.

    #12 admin – thanks

#15 Bernie – no rush. The idea is to enjoy the walk. Do bring along water and some bread/cake etc. Will help to replenish energy during the walk.

#17 Jassmine – with a sweet voice, you would probably attract them instead.

  14. GT #19,
I like my Gin with lots of …………. lime – cheap n good. Haven’t tried Beefeater before though. May be, someday, when you are in SIN, TS can join us for GIN togo plus Mega, Feztus, Ah Huat, Dolly, Andrew, Bpk Chin etc etc….

  15. Ibu Nor #16,
“TianSoo/Ivan..u can makan your nasi lemak plus ur drinks under the coconut tree at the island by the beach…..”
I think all the coconut trees gone already ….. making way for “Unproductive, Economically Useless Red-Dot Citizens” but have a lot of CPF money (that the ChengHu cannot return in one shot) to pay by installments …… for a pigeon plot (about 6ftx2ft) in the latest MEGA project of UBIN RETIREMENT VILLAGE RESORT by NT you C Resort Group”.

  16. Hi IvanL #23,

Your latest comment has caught my Sunday morning attention, and I need to say some words. Please feel free to discuss issues on CPF and the village resort in a new Post as this is a walking event. May I remind you that this forum is accessible to the public, and that you are accountable and responsible for justifying the comments you made. Some parts of your comments are politically sensitive. Do take note of club rules.

  17. Ivan #23

The walk is in Pulau Ubin. I know Changi Prison is nearby but they don’t allow Gin in there, so lets go to Ubin.
We can sit under the remaining coconut tree and talk about Norlinda in her office pretending to work.
    Maybe Geraldine can join us.

  18. Hi Tian Soo,

Wish I could join you guys. I am arriving on the 10th, the day after the hike. What a pity!

We can still meet up during my stay; would be nice if whiskey/beer/brandy/wine/water/milk drinkers can join in the drinking session.

    I am already thirsty……….

  19. Hi Conrad,

I’ve always enjoyed P.Ubin, and wish i could join you. However, I am working, hence unable to join you on a Monday morning… sigh!

27th Nov (Fri) is a public holiday. I’m looking for some interesting activity for that day. Perhaps someone could organise a cycling/hiking trip to P.Ubin on 27th Nov?

Conrad, would u like to do another trip to P.Ubin on 27th Nov? Or maybe someone can do a karaoke/dance/potluck session? I can provide the venue. If anyone is interested in organising an outing on 27th, please get in touch with me.

    Cheers, Lydia.

  20. TianSoo@26
    Ssshh!..don say i pretend la..i work hard & play harder,that will keep me alive & active..stay young & youthful!..hehe

    Dear Geraldine..
Nvm u cant join them ,we can hold our very own after Batam..im on leave, shall we gather some gang & explore?
Conrad, u still off?…can go again with us?

  21. Dear Nor,

A good idea to go after Batam; say on Wed or Thur (have to give ourselves a few days to recuperate after our wild time in Batam).

Want to drink gin under the remaining coconut tree. Kekekekee.

  22. hello Conrad,

I log in on behalf of Chin Boon. He feels shy because
he said he hasn’t met you.(Towards women he is never
shy hahaha!) Please include Chin Boon for the walk. Thank you

  23. Hi Conrad

Please include me in your walk/cycling/drinking or whatever. but please tell me where’s the exact place to meet on that day. thanks.

  24. Hi Conrad,

Please count me in for the walk.Is there a MRT station near the venue where I can meet u guys ? Coming from the west lah…not familiar wth eastern territory.sorry !

    Thanks & regards

  25. Hi Conrad

I was in a hurry just now. Please excuse the poor English. I meant I have never been there before not “never been to there”.

    Sorry.

#28 Lydia, #29 Norlinda – sorry, can’t make it on those days. Another time?

#33 Frisna, #34 Grace, #35 sbkhoo – you can take SBS service 2 from Bedok Central (bus stop just outside Bedok MRT station toward Changi), ride all the way to the terminal (Changi Village terminal), when you drop off you will see a POSB ATM about 50 metres away. Wait for us there by 9am. If you are early, turn right to the hawker centre, search for the famous nasi lemark store (you will see a long queue) and join us for breakfast.

We will cover the Sensory Trail – starting from the jetty, walk into a herb and vegetable garden, round some inland ponds then back to the jetty (approx 1.5 hours). A more comprehensive walk further inland will take longer.

  27. Hi Conrad

I would like to be on the tentative list. Shall confirm next week if its okay with you.

Will you consider doing Chek Jawa as well?

    dAISY

  28. Hi Conrad,
Pls log Thomas Lau in for the walk. A friend of mine whom I introduce to join SHC. Membership approved. Was given a password but to this day cannot log in to post his profile.

Can some good soul pls help him. Thank you.

#39 Daisy – Maybe next round. Covering both the Sensory Trail and Chek Jawa on foot may be too difficult for some. I usually do both when I am cycling.

  30. Hi All,

The walk officially end after lunch. For those who have the time and want to explore P. Ubin further including Chek Jawa, I suggest we rent some bicycles after lunch and cycle there. We will then end the day around 3-3.30 pm.

Please include me in this nature walk.

The island would probably be less crowded on a weekday? Been there twice with SHC members, cycled and walked round the island. Very refreshing and tranquil…

#53 Gingko – yes, it’s more peaceful on a weekday. Very different from the weekend scene.

  34. Conrad,

Well done, for being able to bring so many SHCians together for a weekday walk. While there are many active SHCians still working on a weekday, it was nice of you to encourage those who are available on weekdays to join activities.

May I encourage you to continue, with this healthy activity. You have our support.

    Terence Seah

  35. Hi Patrick Lee @ DJ / Conrad ,

It is so good to see you; DJ and others joining the PU hike. Back to mother nature. Yes! Conrad,we need more of these energizing adventurous walks which we missed badly while we were too busily earning a living and not much time for our recreation.

Thanks for organising this EXCITING walk during the weekdays and we are all anxiously looking forward to it.

  36. Hi Conrad @# 54,

Sad to say I’m unable to join this interesting and refreshing hike.

The idea of a weekday activity is excellent and I hope you would organise a weekday trip to explore Chek Jawa before your long leave is up. Qidai.

Thanks and see you one of these days :)

  37. Hi Ann @# 55,

Sad to miss your company. TQ for bus info – didn’t know bus no. 109 goes to CV. Will catch up with you one of these days :)

  38. Wow, Conrad,
Looks like it’s getting a bit crowded. Hoepfully, we dun destroy the transquility there…..
    Hello, TS,
I think one bottle of JIN/VSOP is not enough with the list getting longer………… so, how?
    Ivan

  39. Ivan #63

If you offer your bottle to all, they will say ‘no thank you’. But like in Padang, they will later ask for a sip and finish the bottle. So if you come, we will drink discreetly.

I think walking in Ubin is not like line dancing or pre-school outing. We don’t have to line-up. We can have a sip ‘on the side’ as we walk.

    Conrad

I’ll be there 8.30am for breakfast. How do I recognize you?

  40. Final count below. A bit on logistic:

    – Meet at Changi Village Bus terminal 9am, Mon 9 Nov
    – Bumboat trip cost S$2.50 per trip or S$5 to and fro
    – Toilets are available only at both side of jetty.
    – For safety sake, please form group of about 5 per group and look out for each other during trip.
    – Bring water and some snacks, eg fruits. bread etc

For those coming early for breakfast, I will be wearing a white hat with SHC letterings

  43. Hi, besides EO, TS and myself going for Breakfast, anybody else joining us?
And EO Conrad, will we be walking in “muddy paths/tracks”. If yes, I better wear slippers and not my son’s sport shoes … if not you know; he is going ask me to wash the shoes before returning it back to him!
Also have googled a bit on Pulau Ubin ….. WOW! WOW! and WOW! got restaurants, biking, cultural attractions, marine-life, eco-@#$%*8976 ….. better build my retirement home there ….. OK, this trip recce for the “DRAGON THRONE” Fengshui Plot of Land to build this …….. hahah just dreaming away lah!! gotcha!!!

  44. #72 Ivan – half the walk will be on dirt track and the other half on paved track. The dirt track normally dry quickly so should be OK unless there is heavy rainfall on Sunday. It’s always better to wear a good pair of walking shoes. As a precaution, I normally take 2 plastic bags along. If the track gets too muddy, just wrap the plastic bag around the shoe and walk across.

  45. Hi Conrad,

It is wonderful you give a day of your vacation to EO a weekday walk,,, I envy all those who have time to roam whilst many of us are at work.

For lunch, I recommend the 1st restaurant on the right(cant remember the name); diagonally opposite the 1st bicycle stand. It is owned by a relative of 1 of my friend. It is not as nice looking as the other but the price is more reasonable, service a little slow but the seafood has always been fresh through the years.

Yes, Conrad is right, always wear a good pair of walking shoes where the soles are still ridged. If you have never tried walking in shoes in plastic bags, take smaller steps as it could be a little more slippery.

    Enjoy your walk!
    ChristinaCL

  46. Hi Tian Soo #64,
Checked the store-room today, no GIN found but have one Apricot Brandy and Henessy VSOP (1/2 bottle size). Both goes OK with 7-up. Which one you prefer? If no reply by Sunday 10pm, I will bring the Henessy VSOP ……….. bcos this one is better.
    Cheers,
    Ivan

  47. Hi Conrad,

A BIG THANK YOU for organising this trip to Pulau Ubin.
Walking the “Sensory Trail” had been a great education for all of us – discovering many herbs & spices for the first time. Tian Soo also had been very informative -providing some interesting history about the trail.
The fine weather we had today was a blessing!
Thank you all for the company -making my very 1st visit to P.Ubin memorable.

    Cheers,
    Constance

  48. Conrad Tang

Today was very enjoyable indeed. The weather couldn’t have been better.
The walk through the Sensory trail was fun and informative in spite of the occasional bites from the pesky ants, haha.

Lunch was ‘cheap and good’, homecooked and delicious.

I’m glad we proceeded to walk along the Changi Coastal boardwalk. I’ve walked some parts of it, but never managed to complete the whole stretch until today.

The best part was the ‘tea’ we all had at Changi Village. After all that walking, the tim sum was exceptionally yummy and I will surely be back for the pig’s trotters soon, haha.

Thank you for organising this walk and I hope there will be more of the same again.

  49. Thanks for paving the way for a wonderful time, Conrad and indeed the weather today was just perfect for a walk not to mention it being on a weekday, we practically had the island to ourselves.

Some us even saw a wild sow on the island! It was tame enough to be hand feed though, so not certain if it can still be considered wild.

Taking a day off for this walk had certainly been worth it!

    Cheers

  50. Hi Conrad,

Thanks v. much for making this walk a successful one and a good time for SHCians to interact together like an “extended family” :)

As if not enough with the P.Ubin’s walk, we continue the
Board Walk, Kelong Walk and Sunset walk at Changi Point and replenish our fuel at the coffee shop with pig trotters and tim sum.

Beautiful weather today, no rain but rather gloomy weather. I had not sweat even a drop despite the long total 2.5h walk as it was v.breezy.

  51. StevenChan, ConstanceWong, MaryC said it all. Although it was my third visit to PUbin with SHC members, I had a good time. Thank you again Conrad for organizing this thoroughly enjoyable outing.

  52. In the end, 22 of us cross over to the island. Some are “lao ma”, while others place their first footprint on the island today. Regardless, I thank all of you for your company this Monday morning.

We can now confirm Christina’s recommendation – the service is slow but the seafood fresh and prices reasonable.

Hope to meet up with all of you again.

  53. Hi Pulau Ubin walkers

I’ve sent some pics to Oi Cheng requesting for them to be posted. Do send yours to her soonest if you would like to share them.

Sorry, Conrad if I seem to be jumping on this initiative.
Sent mine early since I had the time to do so.

Hi Andrew, any of yours for sharing?

    dAISY

  54. Daisy Yeo,

I’ve already sent Conrad’s and my photos to Oi Cheng on Tues 10 Nov. So you are not “jumping on this initiative”, haha. Nice of you to send the photos to her. Waiting for OC to upload the photos.

    Andrew Koh

  55. Hi Andrew

Oh ok. So yours include Conrad’s. From Daisy’s email, it seems she has more to send me, unless I am mistaken. Once she confirmed, I will go ahead to upload them.

  56. Hi Oi Cheng

I have just send my photos to you again and they are all. Thanks again!

    Hello Andrew Koh

Ha ha ha. I sent my photos to Oi Cheng at 10:44pm on Mon, 9 Nov. So, I had beaten you to it!

Will let you win the next time!

    Daisy Yeo

  57. Hi Daisy

Yes I have received the first batch of 4 photos sent on Mon, 9 Nov.

Last sentence in your email says “The second batch will be sent in the next email” but I have yet to receive this next email.

Please confirm asap if 4 are all or more to come so I know if I should wait or go ahead with uploading.

    Hi Conrad,

Have just received from you those forwarded by Ivan.

  58. Thank You Conrad, Ivan, Daisy and Andrew for the fantastic photos posted on our Ubin walk. And not forgetting Oi Cheng
    who posted it.

One photo stood out strong and clear is the one with Conrad, Bernie and Steven chan. The demographic of genetics.
    Well taken shot !!

I hope Oi Cheng can teach me the teach me the art of loading photos to email or whatever and post or send for posting. Totally ignorant on this aspect. Thank you

    LeePat SJ

  59. Aiyah, Lee Patrick, no need to thank us for the photos. Actually, it could have been better if the group did not split up. More fantastic photos could have been taken all round.
Anyway, afterwards, I will be walking around in P12, D10, TP HCM ……….. in Vietnam. Anybody care to join me?
Very Kesian; like what Nor will say………walking alone and walking blindly around with nobody’s companies….until may be get pick up by …… you know what lah!!!

  60. Hahaha! Ivan(Ho)Lim
Perfectly, understand your plight when you are all alone in an exotic country like Vietnam. With a tall handsome guy like you, sure someone will pick you up and the rest is ‘ecstasy’. During the flea mart, did you patronise Terence for the ‘thingie’ to protect you, aha!

Howlian to say, I was used to life alone overseas and for that matter stayed in Myanmar for two years and came back in one piece without a miss……stress. No stress lah understand! Heheheee!

  61. Patrick #95,
“Chay-Chew-Timb-Ma-Day” for what you mean; sure someone will pick me up …… of course lah! Walking blindly surely get lost and then have to be picked-up by four wheelers – Vinasun Taxi and then go back hotel lah!!!! What you thinking ya? ;0)

Btw, your two years there doing what ….. something related to religion-ous stuff or trying to improve human lives?
I was thinking of going to Myanmar to see some of my buddies there. Long time no see them already …. but the return airtickets very expensive leh! Even for budget airlines.
Is there another cheaper way, like cross over from Thai-border or via Bangladesh-border or from China-border?

  65. IvanL. Two years there looking for 3 concubine to wait on my Empress Dowager lah, hahaha! The servants and staff are so cheap. Each is paid S$15/- per mth and my manager is paid S$30/- at 1996 rate. Not sure now. Was running my own business there.

Just buy a package tour now for 3 or 4 nites stay in Yangon for about S$450/-. Those years the return airfare alone was S$830/- on SilkAir or MyanmarAir. Good Luck.
