Video DVD for Year 2010 SHC Activities

Dear SHCians,

Happy New Year 2010 !!! emoticon

Time passed very fast. One year has passed and another has begun.

As I reflect on the numerous activities organised by SHC, how I wished I can attend every single
activitity as they are filled with fun, education or bond-building.

However, like many members, my time is limited and I can only attend a handful of events.

As such, how I wish I can cherish those moments I was there and if I was not present, someone
can record these events and organise them in one form or another for everyone to share.

So starting this year 2010, I wish to offer my service to put together pictures, videos and
anecdotes of as many events organised by SHC as much as possible. I will create a Video DVD,
one in the middle of the year and another at the end showcasing the humorous, exciting and
human aspects of you participating in those regular or ad-hoc activities from time to time.

To succeed, I would need the cooperation of EO/EC to send in the pix or short video (< 2min)
(can ask a photographer in place) and write a short summary of the event for my compilation.

Possible (and not limited to) events are:

Regular Features

Monthly meetings
Monthly Cycling
Monthly walk
Dance Lessons / performance
Annual Dinner and Dance
Travel Trips
Games / Sports
Educational Talks

Ad-hoc Programs

Potluck / makan sessions
Cabaret Nite / Star-in-Concert
Movies / Picnics
Special Talks (eg: on jewelry)

In short, any event which you think is of value, please send them to:

jamestancl@gmail.com

So EO/EC for various events and members in general, please feedback your input whether you support
this idea for the benefits of the whole SHC club and any suggestions you may have.

Note that this is not going to give you much additional work other than writing a good summary
and send the video separately as Oi Cheng can only accept photographs (need not send
separately to me).

I await to offer my humble service.

sincerely,
james

  1. Hi JamesT,

I am impressed with this desire of yours to make a CD of the different events, pix/videos. This is going to be a tough job. Support will depend on those taken videos and pictures. Taking videos depend alot upon the interest of the individual; the same goes with the phtographers.

Even Oi Cheng has her share of headaches. But, you may be able to do so differently. I wish you all the best; and we can review this towards the end of 2010.

And, may I know what do you intend to do with the video when it is completed?

  2. Hi James

While I do not know what you intend to do with the completed video, please do note that there are members who do not wish to have their pictures up even on the SHC website.

It is easier to remove a single photo but editing a video?? not gonna be easy if you want the video to run continuously.

  3. Hi James,
Kindly note that while I dun mind my pics 2b in SHC photo album but I do mind very much my pics to be your video, hence, wuld appreciate that you have this in mind while planning ur video making.. Cheers and keep this up…. Dolly

  4. Terence, Dolly, Oi Cheng,

Your points will noted when I do the compilation.
As you have rightly sounded out, this project involves a lot
of work, but hard work is not the main concern here.
The success will depend largely on the cooperation of the
various EO/EC and although I’ve got the agreement of a few personally,
the majority or the organisers have yet to respond.

Upcoming events which I believe could be in the VCD are:

Countdown at Kovan – Ah Nee is discussing with Kovan cmtte
    Cabaret nite by Terence
    Chinese NY lunch by ???
    Valentine Day event by ???
Monthly Walk by the Walk team
Monthly Cycling by Yew Kwong’s team

I plan to have a preview of the VCD for members sometime in
the middle of 2010 before it’s officially burned.

Thank you for the contributions and pls keep the comments
    coming.

  5. James

No problem except photo taken by other members, u hv to seek their permission for use.

    Thanks for your efforts.

  6. Hi James.
I enjoy photography and videography but hates to be in front of a camera myself.
From Oi Cheng and Dolly’s comment it seems that I am not the only one who don’t like to be photographed.
With photography it is easy to ‘siam’ without effecting other peoples enjoyment but with videos it will be difficult to avoid. So can I ask that you let us know when a funtion is to be videographed, so that people like myself can stay away.

  7. “I enjoy photography and videography but hates to be in front of a camera myself”.

That statement too echos my butty Bayi Sengh’s sentiments when he said “I enjoy rearity (sic.) but hate to be in front of a camel myself”.

So the reality is, many, I included, like to do what we wont like to be done on, such as scolding people.

Jokes aside, permission of people shd bee obtained before they’re filmed or their image recorded. Also, the purpose and where the films/images will be posted should be made known at the outset, and further permission sought shd there be a deviation of purpose/posting site. Even then, not sure how control of downloadingg by viewers can be exercised.

In the final analysis, there’s legitimate fear that a well intended exercise, if the film/images end up in the hands of the furtive, will be exploited altho I do look forward to my foto being billed as the most sought after midnite cowboy in Uganda, vying pride of place with Idi Amin………byt then I cant control it if it becomes nite-soil cowboy instead.

  8. Tian Soo, Tim,

    Thank you for your concern.
For video taking, it will be done on mainly big event like
Annual D n D and Cabaret Nite, and mainly the focus will be
performance on the stage itself, although to a lesser
extent, some coverage will be on the floor too. Of course,
permission from the EO/EC will be sought if official request
is required. For other events, it will depend on whether
there is videographer present and contribution is totally voluntary.
For photo taking, it’s no different from the current practice.
Finally, before the VCD is officially released, a preview
will be orgnised for all SHC members for their comments.
If objections, they can be raised at that time.

    Hope this answer your queries.

  9. Seriously, I have no problem with your desire to do what I see as a help and boost in giving SHC a bigger publicity. To my mind, if I allow myself to be seen at a functtion, then I shd have no 2 minds that I can be recorded. Although not as tall as Steven is, I do like to think that I stand tall.

However, there maay be others who might not wish to be seen with some folks; worst, if the images are reproduced and posted somewhere else.

It will be hard work on your part and you cant now shirk the responsibility to work hard on it……….afterall, who asked you to raise your hands and now you’ll have to grapple with how not to show yr armpit hair…………..

  10. Thanks to voices from Oi Cheng (#2), Dolly (#3) and Tian Soo (#6). I echo Tian Soo’s sentiment.

Although James had (@ #8) indicated that “objections can be raised during preview time”; I doubt very much, that personal objection(s) raised during preview would be entertained as extensive editing would involve much work esp when project has reached this far. More often than not, (I find) protests or objections of personal preference are lost (or “mis-interpreted”) amid supporters’ chants.

    Prevention is better than cure.

Should a video-recording is deemed unavoidable for certain events, may I suggest on day of activity that a “line” be drawn segregating a “video” and a “non-video” zone? Members who love the camera could participate and have their faces captured on the videoing ground while others, like myself, who preferred to stay out of the camera, could relax and enjoy the same activity in peace and bliss in the non-video zone?

  11. Hi James.

Thought we already have an archive of our function photos in SHC website for our memebrs’viewing, so why do we need to do more work in doing up a vcd?

I may not be a professional photographer but the photos I had taken for the various SHC functions on voluntary basis. Time and effort were spent in post production and I reserve the right to restrict the usage of my work only for publication on SHC website.

I am not sure if you are also doing this on a voluntary basis but if you intend to charge members for the VCD then I shall reserve my right not to have the photos taken by me to be included in your project unless the proceeds from the sales are donated to SHC to defray the admin costs and to cover shortfall in the major events.

I am ok with members downloading the photos for there own keepsake but I would appreciate it very much if member could refrain from posting these in their own web/blog pages.

I would like to take this opportunity too to let members know that all the photos I take will be handed over to Oi Cheng for uploading the SHC site. Soooo if anyone would to see me pointing the camera your way and you do not wished to be photographed, please let me know and I will respect your request. Of course for those who like to smile in front of the camera, yours truly here will always be at your service.

    Sockie

  12. Hi all! I have received via email some photos taken at the last monthly gathering taken by Robert Quek. I suppose there are others beside me who are not sure who the appointed photographer for the said event is and so we all happily posed.

Robert compiled the photos he took in an album and in a way it was nice to be able to see other members with their name tags on. It helped me to remember who is who.

  13. Dear James,

Thank you for this desire; but I cant help but think (same as others have asked) what do you intend to do with all the photos & videos?

I too hate to be infront of the cam / camera; I will “siam” whenever poss (so, now Terence you’ve got your answer when you asked me Why you never have a pic of me!).

As it is there are already many photos posted on this website. If I could have a say, I do not wish my photos posted here or any websites! You never know when your face surfaces in undesirable places!

    no offence, personal view!

  14. Hi James,

I have the same question as Terence and Christina. What is your intention?

I agree with Sockie that we already have an archive, so what’s the point of compiling twice a year?

If you are planning to sell them, it is totally unacceptable. If you simply want to be of service to our club, this compilation is not necessary.

I am a private person. Do not wish to see myself (photos and videos) all over the website or god forbid, in someone’s personal blog, whatever.

I do not mind to a certain extent having pictures taken during a gathering with the understanding that it ‘remains’ in our archive and members downloading as keepsakes (as mentioned by Sockie).

By the way, it’s not up to the EOs and ECs to decide whether or not to allow photos or videos to be compiled.

  15. Dear all,

Thank you for all your valuable comments and suggestions.

Just a little bit more details of what I already briefly
mentioned in the main post about the purpose of this compilation.

Yes, we have lots of pictures of various events in the archive
but they do not tell a story. Also, up to today no video was
    available (officially).

With a compilation, there would be words and description of
various events, plus a short video segment if it is suitable
So the whole project would be akin to a movie, capturing the
life, fun and hilarious (but not embarrassing) moments of our SHC events and the people organising and participating
    in it.

There will only be good and beautiful people featured, with
no ‘baddies’, unlike a movie. Definitely, all pix and video
taking will only capture the best of the moments, with no
embarrassing, compromising or intimate takes whatsoever.

Those who have attended Yew Kwong’s class on MMM (Microsoft
Movie Maker) and seen Paul Kong’s video on the Padang &
Batu Pahat trips would appreciate the beauty of their artistic
works. Theirs is just a sample of what I intend to do.

Now come to the issue of cost and price. I would readily
handover this function to the SHC management to decide, if
they want to, as I’m just doing this as a service to the
club. No intention of profit or gain do I want to get out
of this project, other than the benefit of sharpening my IT
    skill.
Nothing in SHC that I’ve taken part or organized in this
club had benefited me with even a single cent in my pocket,
including last year D n D and the lunch time buffet at
Grassroots club. I’ve no intention of doing so even in future.

In conclusion, since there is insufficient support in this
project, this issue should be aborted and the thread close.

I thank all participants for their valuable inputs.
That shows you have a great interest in the issues of SHC.

    sincerely,
    james
