  1. Hi Yew Kwong,

Please register me for the event although the timing is slightly early for me. I need about 150 minutes of daily exercises/jogging to get my body system to start functioning properly before I start my day.

I think I will have to wake up slightly early at 4.30 in the morning instead of my normal 5.30 am so that I can ready myself for the event.

  2. Yew Kwong:

I was a regular visitor to Pulau Ubin, and the proprietor on the first bycycle shop you approach from the jetty, Ms Koh Bee Choo, is a personal friend. I am unable to join you all for obvious reasons, but will be happy to arrange with her to give you to give you special rates.

I’ll speak to her on behalf of the group if you like. Just say the word.

    Ron Koh

  3. Hi Ron Koh

We have since been renting bikes from the shop owned by Molly Chua’s friend when she first rode with us.

Thanks for the good tips. We will try the shop.

  4. Yew Kwong, your pro cyclists group will be cycling to Changi village by their own bike? Are they allow to bring their own bike on board the ferry across to Pulau Ubin? Just kaypoh only lah…I will rent the bike at Pulau Ubin. Don’t think we need to wear helmet right? …..so uncomfortable…..

    Ah Nee

  5. From the 33rd level of my office, I can see that YK is almost in tears looking for toilet paper (no warning of depleted tissue, chan hei mo yum kong lor) so will answer for him.

    1. Whenecer a boat is filled to its licensed carry capacity (12, I believe), the ah pek tokang will kiss you and sails. If you kiss him back, he will take yyou further, sometimes to China and then propose to you (polygamy is allowed in the Middle Kingdom).

    2. Any resident and person who legally enters Spore can also land on P Ubin which is part of SG. Anyone who can pay S$ can rent a bike and hv a great outing there. However, if this person wants to tag along with the SHC cyclists, hee might get bashed up, thrown into the sea or burried in shallow graves as obviously it being our own event, it’s exclusive to SHCians. So non members can follow at a safe distance, make no contact (mouths or eyes) with SHCians and when approached, die de also must deny knowing anyone in our cycling group.

    You’re allowed 1 last question.

  6. Hi Jass

The bumboats ferry between mainland and P Ubin regularly. Latest we leave island should be 6 pm when the sky gets dark. Each time the boatman will wait till he gets between 12 to 14 passengers before moving off. Shouldnt be an issue if you are leaving at 2 pm.

    Hi Ah Nee

We will be renting the bikes from shops on P Ubin. As regular cyclists we usually carry along gloves and helmets as standard items. Besides helmets come in handy when we can use them as fishing nets to catch the big arrowanas.

    Hi Tim

Time for you to pay the Toa Pek Kong a visit to renew your ties.

  7. Yew Kwong, you’re right. The TPK is still wearing his 3/4 sawn-off pyjama pants hunting for a living, and has not benefited from the Renaissance.

Will take him to the mainland to see what he rub shoulders with high rollers in a casino instead of rubbing stones to make fire. If time permits, will also take him to Bidadari to provide some security altho he might be outnumbered in a fight, playing away from home.

So if I can take that Saturday off like I do today, will certainly like to join you folks.

  8. Hi Yew Kwong,

Will this cycling be continued after lunch? If so, hope to join in the 2nd part coz gotta work in the morning leh….

    Pls advise thanks.

  9. Hi YK @# 14,

Thanks for your reply. I’ll direct my last qn to your helpful assistant who sees all from his 33rd level office.

    Cheers,

  10. Hi Tim @# 13,

    This is my last qn:

In the event a bumboat ferry is unable to get its desired load of 12 pax, how is the situation resolved so that the ferry can sail off?

(Cautionary note: A cheeky answer may cost you an ‘ang pow’ at year end!)

  11. Jass-T, once upon a time, I was told not to assume when I had bases galore to do so. Now, you hv a qn for me and you assume I will answer it? Any basis for that assumption? Merely based on the assumption that if I know I will share?

Ok, I will then, being the bad man many-link believes I am.

The bumboat operators are OMOs, running not according to a departure schedule but follows a queue.

While a bb is licensed to carry a mximum load of 12 pax, on a low traffic day such as weekdays, it does sail when fewer than 12 pax board but the wait ttime may be a bit longer. So long as it can make to cover fuel, I suppose any extras are earnings to them and they run a bb service to earn a living, modest it may be.

But if you’ll promise him a romantic cruise to some idyllic destination, even if 1 pax he will sail with you. It’s not a bad idea to be a shipowner’s wife……….it’s towkay neo, you know.

  12. Jasmine

U are like a small kid – first time travelling huh?? (hahaha)

Don worry la … if u are stuck in Ubin – there is a holiday resort to stay overnight and the whole gang will be with u – u never alone when u are with “SHC”

    Soooo… relax and enjoy ..

    karen

  13. Tim @# 23,

TQ for reply to the qn.

btw, are u suffering from some short term memory loss? – Any basis for my assumption that you would reply, u asked. Refer to your comment @# 13 – you allowed me one last qn. How should I assume if not that you r prepared to give a reply?

ok, u are forgiven cos u dished out a tip – the romantic cruise bait. :)

    Cheers,

  14. Hello Karen,

Guess I’ve a kiasu streak and feel more secure with more info than less. Hope to see u one of these days. :)

    Cheers,

  15. I took a long while to remember I am tim. Sure, the bb man baits and if my memory is still of use, and if I remember it correctly, tim never baits but often bites. Heeee……………..

  16. Hi Yew Kwong,

Michael Tan may join us if he is free on that day. But he prefer to explore the island on foot. Can you walk with him……

    Ah Nee

  17. Hi Yew Kwong,

Can include me please? Thanks. Also can tell us more of the cycling route? Distance, any watering holes nearby or shd we bring more water, etc time taken, short cuts for those who want to cycle less, whatever?

    Thanks for arranging this route.

    Cheers

  18. Hi Charles

Can’t really tell u much on the route except that some parts we will be riding on tracks. No to worry about water supply. There are stalls selling them along the way. Just need to carry one in your bike.

  19. Nice to read that our indefatigable Douglas-C has confirmed his attendance, and Jass-T wil have company walking with Michael-T (or shd it be the other way round?).

Steven-C, you asked me to conserve my energy.

Dont think i cant take on the Doug or YK but shdnt hv a problem putting you on my palm and blow you away. Wanna do a triathlon? Loser will hv to try (putting on) Lily’s thong as soon as Ivan-L sounds the gong with the rest ssinging the burong kaka song.

    Game?

  20. Hi YK @ 35,

Sorry but have to back out of this again as I have to go to KL with my cousin.

WIll miss this as I haven’t been cycling for some months now.
The last I was in Ubin was more than 10 or 15 years ago. I actually brought my 2 girls there to cycle. It was a good trip but have not been there since then

Wish you and the rest good weather and a good meal. Those still craving for another meal from P Ubin can proceed to Joo Chiat where there is a Pulau Ubin restaurant.

    Cheers

  21. Good morning Yew Kwong,

Please cancel Michael Tan’s participations; he won’t be able to join us.

The weather is so unpredictable this day……a gentle reminder to all cyclists, remembered to bring raincoat, poncho and plastic sheet if you don’t want to get wet. Looking forward to this Saturday’s cycling at Pulau Ubin…..see you folks soon.

    Ah Nee

  22. Hi Yew Kong,

I look fwd to joining the gang for cycling & lunch.
    Pls book me in .thanks

Last year I went Ubin but rain washed us out and we ended up eating @ the seafood restaurant. Qlty is so ..so only and price is higher than Changi Point, but no choice eh !. Hope the weather gods are kind this week.

    Ronald Lam

  23. hi YK,

Susan Tan n me will join in the cycling/walk, but we have
to leave about 11am for the mainland as we have programs
    later on.

    C u.

    james

  24. Hi Y K,
Please include me, Jane Ong,for the Ubin walk.I cant cycle.Susan Tan would like to join us as well. She cant cycle either. Thank You.

  25. Nice to see the cyclist list growing.

As the ground at Ubin is likely to be wet and soggy, cyclists will do well to wear darker colour tops unless they want to be seen going home all in jersey cloth number 1. The throw-up of mud and dirt from wheels and staining our shirts is not smthg we can avoid.

Hopefully, the rainmaker honours his truce with me and go disturb other people.

  26. Hi Ah Nee #2

Paiseh…I’m unable to join you for cycling this Saturday. I have not been cycling for many months and I know my legs would hurt after the long ride. Better preserve myself, as I can’t afford to get hurt or sick prior to my holiday next day.

You & the rest of them have fun at Ubin!

    Cheers,
    Suzhang

  27. Hi Hougang cyclists……

I am driving to Changi Village this Saturday. Beside Ivan Lim, any cyclists from Hougang need transportation? I can “tonpang” another 2 cyclists.

Wow wei….Susan & Norlinda….happy holiday lah, me also holiday overseas…..hehehe…over to Pulau Ubin. :)

    Ah Nee

  28. Molly,

Two Saturday ago, I happen to be there and noticed that the free parking place have already locked by huge gate. I saw many car illegally parked along the road outside the locked gate. I don’t want to risk my car being tow away or getting a summon. I will probably park my car at Changi Village Hotel or coupon parking near the jetty. Molly…come and join us leh…….. ;)

    Ah Nee

  29. Hi YK,

I’m not been to Pengarang so unsure of the meeting point.
Would it be more convenient to meet at the Bus Terminal?
Which paths are you bringing the walkists in Ubin?
Any chance to go Chek Jawal?

    james

  30. Molly #50 n Ah Nee #49
“Be there early then go for breakfast”
Hv d same idea … but as I know; 7:15am to 7:45am, not many stalls are open yet ….. anyway, let’s see how it goes…
    James #52,
Actually, the same area/location – Bus Terminal very near to the Changi Village Jetty Terminal. I think you been there before – Conrad’s Ubin Walk…. same same lah!
    C U ALL,
    Ivan

  31. Hi James

Call me when u are there. There is a 24-hour coffee shop opposite the bus terminal across the road. The stalls at the hawker should be opened by 7 a.m.

As for the walk, I will be taking the path that has many foot prints painted on it. Guess it should lead us to Chek Jawa

  32. As i write – 3.45 p.m. – the sky is still overcast. Therefore, the rainmaker might not keep to his truce and so tomorrow’s cycling at Ubin is for the brave. The faint-hearted can send us off and wave us goodbye at the Changi jetty, in tears if they like.

There wont be too many shelters once we leave the Ubin jetty and so we need the walkists, armed with umbrellas, to follow us closely. Those who are wearing spectacles, you have tonite to instal wipers.

All said, it should be fun……….think, when was the last time you got to play in the rain?

  33. Tim-L,
U n ur F88L-mouth. Rem wat u said b4 our Ulu Pandan Walk!
Now, hv 2 go pack a full-proof water jacket 4 2moro Island Resort Trip liao…….
    Gdnite!
    Ivan

  34. Good morning!

Weatherman says, thunderstorm island wide today!

So, we gotta Playing in the Rain, Playing in the Rain.

Instead of trying to lose the extra inches, it seems like we’re going to gain the extra cause the only thing to do then would be to eat thru’ the morning or day, at the coffee shops.

  35. Many Thanks to Yew Kwong ,Boon Liang and Douglas for organising this cycle cum walk event.

In a way, the drizzle coupled with heavy rain occasionally was a blessing. It was so cool and the air was so refreshing too but the ground was muddy too.

Looking 4 ward to the next cycling from Pengarang to S. Ringgit and hopefully this time we had fine weather.

  36. I enjoyed the walk in the rain, climbing the 5 storey observation tower, the hot chilli crab lunch and picking the atap chee. thanks EO YK and all the walkies and ‘crabbies’!

  37. Another perspective…

    A drizzle started on outing day;
    Alamak! How? Asked the brain.
    Optimism prevailed,
So there we were – walking in the rain.

    With umbrellas, hats and ponchos,
Down the wet track we strolled, spirits high,
To the boardwalk, and there saw a strange, rocky outcrop,
And silent planes disappear suddenly in the sky.

A five-storey tower, basic and skeletal,
    Amid the wild vegetation, came in sight;
To the top deck gingerly we climbed,
    And behold! A panoramic sight!

A lake! No, it was a disused quarry,
    Now with rain water to the brim full;
A danger spot, a sign warned,
So, safe at the fencing we admired the placid pool.

Talk on ‘atap chee’ and animated reminiscing
    Of childhood games, continued in the rain;
No more squealing, naked-top, undeveloped kids,
Yet all were happy children once again.

In the light rain, only cyclists, vans
    And happy wanderers were on the go;
All forest creatures were in hiding
Save for five dogs sheltering in a gazebo.

At a fork, a white van behind us turned left,
    We turned right, for the jetty ahead lay;
Having the whole road to ourselves, how we jaywalked,
Till – oh no! We had taken the wrong way!

    A narrow U-turn to backtrack;
Not a step missed – it was part of the adventure
Of happy wandering in the rain,
And long after, fond memories to treasure. :)

    -copyrighted.

TQ to YK and all the other brave trippers on that wet Sat. morning…..a memorable experience. :)

    Cheers,

  38. VinceWong, I thot Jass-T sums it up very nicely in her #62 poem.

From my perspective, it was a cycling session well organised. No hiccup at all. Didnt count but think about 15 cyclists took off but when the rain became heavier, 3-4 decided to take shelter back at the coffee shops next to the jetty.

We rode on the tarmac roads and deviated only once into some bushes, hoping to find a short-cut to Chek Jiwa. No luck, it was a dead-end.

Rain came pelting down hard on us closer to noon. All but 3 had some form of raincoat/poncho as cover. The bespetacled had a hard time seeing thru their glasses. The desire to visit CJ was doused. We cycled back for an early lunch.

There was at least one bright spot. Rod Stewart wore a santa claus topi which he thot was a helmet. A red light flickered at the top of the rod standing high in the middle, sending out radar signals to her on the mainland, that he was not naughty but nice. Very lovey dovey.
