Only Individual membership to the SilverHairsClub

The SilverHairsClub is for Singaporeans, over 45.  The taboos on activities and discussions of the club are "No politics, sex, religion, race, direct selling and MLM".  Its objective is to provide a platform for SHCians to meet new and more friends.

From time to time, we get requests from expatriates and PRs to join SHC.  The answer is we will exercise discretion, and membership is subject to our approval.

It is important to note that only individuals are allowed to join this virtual but real social club.  In other words, corporations or companies or external organisations are not allowed to join SHC.  Corporations cannot be represented by a member, altho members may be part of that organisation.

As this is a "free to join" club, advertising is not permitted on the forum and during club activities.  Therefore, we do not support promoting external organsiations.  There are requests from members to promote external organisations or sell products.  I am reviewing this but unfortunately, I have not found a solution to meet such requests.  Basically, we do not have the human resources.

However, SHC has always been very open to members who are entrepreneurial, runs their own business and able to provide handy men services.  Some degree of mention of what you do will be accepted on this forum. Again, external organisations are not permitted to be mentioned here.

Here are some examples of what can be accepted on this forum:

  1. You are attending a sales talk at ABC company.  You may invited other members to join you.
  2. You are the owner of XYZ flower shop, and you can offer flowers at discounts of 10% to members.
  3. You provide PC fixing services, and would like members to know.  You may mention this in  your profile when you introduce yourself to fellow members.
  4. You can organise activities at BBB karaoke, and invite members to participate. This is acceptable, as long as you are attending.

Here are some examples of what would not be accepted on this forum:

  1. You put up news that there is a sales or service available at ABC company.  ABC company does not belong to you.
  2. You are a member of HHH club, and you like other members to join.  You would like to put up some advertising.  We do not promote external organsiations.
  3. You read some news in the newspapers about a company offering health products.  You would like to copy this information for other members.

Some of you have expressed disappointment and even anger at this rules.  I am not so sure how to handle this.  SHC does not have a management or a committee.  We are unable to monitor or keep track of all activities and going-ons.  So, a simple set of rules is sufficient.

If in doubt, feel free to write to me.  You are free to express your views and comments here too.

  1. Terence, I can say for sure and bet you to my last dollar (which is all I have most of the time) that you didnt write this thread. There are just too many cogs not fitting in nicely………I must be cock to believe otherwise.

  2. Whoever wrote: “You are a member of HHH club”???
There is indeed such a social (running and booze) club too.
HHH aka Hash House Harriers, there are many chapters too…
I was from the Seletar HHH Chapter and my Hash Name was “S**T-P*P*R” …. had been a loooooooonnng time since I last ran with the Hash. Most of us has a “Hash-Name” christen by the Hash-Whip and there is a story behind all these names – as always! :))))
I just checked their website ….. many of my known HHH buddies were listed on the “OnHome Memorial Page” liao….
    Cheers,
    Ivan

This might be off topic to this thread but it’s good to know there are HHH members past or present here. I too was from Seletar HHH but now am with Siam Sunday HHH.

By the way there’s a harriet here too, Veronique Lee from Thirsdae HHH. I’ll end off here and not write too much about the HHH since it’s off topic.

  4. Ooops, umwittingly, seems like I got myself mired here with my earlier observation. Certainly owe an explanation.

What I meant was, going by his style and nuances, the write disnt appear to be by Terence’s hand. However, quite obviously, he must have instructed and approved the writing which contents consistent are consistent with the position SHC has taken. It could be his dictation albeit he was chewing betul nuts or worse, with pacifier in mouth as well.

  5. Hi TimL, RobertQ #1,

Rest assured, every single character in the Post was written by me. Glad you thought the post was written by someone else. It really depends on which hat I put on.

Now, this post hopes to solicit new ideas into SHC. Perhaps, the yellow lines are too rigid and not flexible. Maybe we should have dashes in between the lines. Makes driving easier.

If you have been a SHCians for at least one or two years, I do look forward to your contribution. If you speak out, others may agree and support you. If you dont speak out, others may continue to stay quiet. Hopefully, a new Club Manager will surface by then.

  6. “Corporations cannot be represented by a member, altho members may be part of that organisation.” Singular and plural mix-up.

“There are requests from members to promote external organisations or sell products. I am reviewing this but unfortunately, I have not found a solution to meet such requests. Basically, we do not have the human resources.” Vague >>> the human resources needed to help members promote their external organisations or to mee their requests?

“may invited”, “there is a sales..”, “this rules…”.

That said, Terence cd have been up on a branch entertaining the macaw on a rare occasion as a talking cock at the expense of keeping the cogs in line.

  7. Hi TimL #9,

I think you are getting close to making sense. Maybe if you elaborate more, the picture will get clearer. So, why was the tree standing there for the macaw on that rare occasion?

  8. Even twins are different so each individual has his own writing style and nusnaces such as in your case, Steven-C, you can be nubile and liang liang chiang.

Terence, I aint making sense, in fact, in 1 terrible sense I am in the abyss, cant return to sleep if I wake up say for the loo. So befriended that macaw which brought the tree to stand on and later for you to perch atop as well. Why you had to do the cock-talk was obvious andd understandable……..how cd you speak aanything less witth another bird, and a talkative bird to boot.

Yes,I too think it’s timely to remind of the dos and donts of this very unique Club, in any language or vernacular so long as they – and you – both make sense

  9. Hi Tim Liu @ 12,

    What is nusnaces ?
I coudn’t find this unusual word in the Wikipedia Eng.
Do you mean “nuances” ? and what is liang liang chiang ?
You mean toong toong chiang ? LOL.

    Pls. clarify. Thanks.

  10. Steven-C, last nite I spent time with my daughter as usual, going thru her Chinese test work. She thought I was down by another kg so I took off my long pants and stepped on the scale to weigh.

I kissed her g’d nite when it was time to leave and was reminded that i hadnt put my pants back on.

Ageing is a scourge which spares no one. Much of me is failing……….eyesight, typing, memory, gusto. Yes, you’re right, the word is “nuances”. Boy, you’re not just tall but clever too.

The letter “l” in “liang liang chiang” shd rightly be “n”. Will that help you to know what it means? If not, it means : a girlie voice matched by an equally gelek gait which of cos cd portend a tong tong chiang march soon……………

  11. I am a newbie here. Perhaps I am stepping out-of-line, but here is my 2 cents worth.

While I agree that blatant advertising is not desirable, I feel that we could allow for comparative pricing where it would benefit members. Examples of beneficial comparative pricing:

    1. Bank interest rates
    2. Sale commission for unit trust purshcases
    3. Essentials, like milk powders, diapers, rice, oil etc

Having say the above, SHC is a voluntary body and unless someone is interested to be EO in comparative pricing, it would not be a concern.

  12. Hi Conrad #15,

Your comment and viewpoint are definitely acceptable within the SilverHairsClub forum. The examples you have given are also useful and can be taken up for discussion by any member, including you. So I hope to hear from you soon. Give it a start.

As for advertising, it is still not acceptable. So far, no one has come up with suggestions on how to handle advertising. Maybe someone can add another $1 worth of suggestion.
