Privileged Life Project

Did anybody get to see this 4 part serial on retirement.  The last episode was aired last the Sunday before last on Channel 5 according to Mediacorp. If so, can you give us a summary of the lessons learned. I am dying to know what  privileged life means in Singapore.

Thanks.

  1. I think there is no such thing as retirement in Sinkipore, it means different things to different people. If you are into your silverhairs years and are jobless, you tell people that you are retired to save face.

There is only retirement from Singapore which means get the hell out.

The different is the word ‘in’ and ‘from’ used in the above 2 sentences.

  2. Basic retirement needs in Singapore include the following:-
    1. Regular monthly income stream/s adding up to S$750 per person minimum, or S$1200 per couple, excluding housing rent(assumed owned HDB flat or other house). This sum is best funded by life annuity, pension, and/or interest/dividends.
    2. Medical insurance including a Shield plan funded by medisave, with reserves up to aged 90 preferably.

Those with S$1000 per month to live on, may consider forming small groups of 4 to 8 and living abroad for 2 to 3 months – short-term – in Thailand, Malaysia, and possibly Philipines, Indonesia (not safe), China (Hainan, Guangdong, Fuzian)- places served by budget airlines – in order to make life more interesting. Some SHC members informed that it is possible to live in Thailand for S$500pm, pp. If one has S$1000pm, life can be quite exciting. Hope to hear more info and views on such short-term living abroad.
    Cheers !!
