Volunteers to teach “Selling/Auctions on the internet”

This repeats a Post by Terence on 3 Aug 06. It says "We have a few volunteers to teach and coach this topic.  There might be some of you who would like to offer the same service.   if you are experienced in selling on ebay, Yahoo or other auction sites, and willing to spend some time with other SilverHairs who may be interested, please raise your hands here.  Those with online payment experience also appreciated.
The small group would form among themselves in max 6 people.  The location will be their apartment/house, and they would have their own PC, broadband and digital camera.  Session 2 hours.
So, if you would like to volunteer, raise your hands here.  Hopefully, you will get to meet new friends too with common interests."

So far, 5 members had responded to do or assist in the teaching  with only 11 responded to learn. To all other members who wish to learn, dont feel shy to come forward and put your names here. We dont want you to be left behind in the digital divide.

  1. I am quite puzzled as how this initiative which has been made sometime ago will eventually be implemented. It does not matter if the group starts small. I suggest that those involved can get together and set the snowball in motion soon.

If this is a mentor system then perphaps it is easier for those who wish to learn tell the rest what help they require and what are they trying to sell. Then we can match up the mentor who can best advise in the areas concern.

  2. Hi Kong Thean,

The idea to start some sessions on this topic first started to find volunteer trainers. At the same time, we thought it would be good if others who like to join such sessions raise their hands too.

Our group does need someone like you to mentor in this activity. You can also start a group, and invite others to join you too.

  3. Hi Chow Weng, Ronald, Kenneth, Cheong Kong, Cyeo & Margaret
I think you guys can form a group.

Hi Kong Thean, Patrick, Kaushal and Richy
Perhaps one or 2 of you guys can take up the role of mentor for this group.
Importantly, you guys must have enought PCs/Notebooks plus internet access for the hands-on part.

As for myself, I got a group of 6 fixed for 9 Sep 06 at one member’s house with internet access and 5 laptops/PCs available.

  4. Let’s discuss at the meeting.

I was thinking more like a one-to-one mentorship on something that the student wishes to value add. Group teaching is a little generic and hard to adjust to a useful pace if everyone starts at different level. Besides we may just be duplicating what is commonly available from many sources.

Group teaching also requires logistics not easily found in a single home. However we can easily adjourn to an internet cafe somewhere. They cost only a few dollars an hour. Alternatively, we can also wait for the exciting cybercafe that some members are trying to set up.

  5. Hi All,
I would like to learn too so do include me in. I do like the idea of one to one or at most, three to one coaching for the benefits stated. Also, this is easier to handle in terms of meeting date, place to conduct lessons, computers available etc. Hence, we can start almost immediately when a “coach” volunteers his services to assist this group. Lessons can be held at my home though it’s rather way out. I have a computer and a laptop (litte slow) which we can use though it would be good to bring your own if you have one as you’ll be more familiar with it.

  6. Hi Yew Kwong, looks like we were stuck here. I believed it could be the logistic for starting the class.

I can provide a laptop plus a Linksys-wireless router (WRT54G) with 1 USB, 1 PCMCIA adaptors and some RJ-45 cables. It is not difficult to hook up within a short period of time a network in any given place that has a Broadband internet access modem and some computers. Two to three persons can share one computer. So, with two computer (my laptop and the one at the site) we can easily starts a class for a coach and 4 learner. If one of them can bring along a laptop, we can have multiple groups of three in addition (Note: up to a maximum of 4 for RJ-45 connection).

My setback is I do not know exactly what topics to coach on, I only know how to buy online. Alternatively, maybe you can give me the guideline.

I wish this could unclog the bottleneck. Any suggestions are welcome.

  7. Hi Ronald Lee

Thanks very much for coming to the rescue. Its not so much of logistic rather than members who volunteer to train coming forward to form a group.

Logistic is quite clear – need internet access (broadband or normal dialup), two laptops/PCs and a place for 7 persons for duration between 2 to 3 hours.

In regards to the guidelines on the topics, I agree with you it will be good to have it in place but may take time to document it. I usually pick http://www.yahoo.com.sg auctions to start on after the introduction. The rest are mostly sharing session on our experience on how we go about doing it, security issues, the tips and tricks.

Now that we can add your name to those who volunteer to train, I believe, if no other members volunteers, that both of us can do one session each and unclog the queue.

Drop me a note at my email address : lohyks@hotmail.com and we can discuss this further. Thanks.

  8. i took a taxi today, and the driver had worked in an IT firm before he started driving a taxi a year ago. He told me he has an email address which he uses, but has not gone into the web to do any browsing. He wished he had taken the effort to learn the benefits of the internet.

One thing I have learnt is many SilverHairs are still trying hard to know more about how the net can help us. By the way, this includes me.

Keep your offer to help coach others coming in. On behalf of the learners, thank you to Yew Kwong and those who had put up their hands.

  9. Hi YK,
I would love to join the 2GreenDots Shopping Mall but until now, I have not been able to find time to make some handicrafts to put on sale. Can I just sign up first and think about the handicrafts later? So far, my experience with the internet is I bought some jewellery accessories and computer games – all paid by credit cards online. I have also signed up for courses with community centres – also paid by credit card online. If you think that this experience can help in any way, please let me know. Thanks.

  10. Hi Pauline

Welcome onboard to the pool of members volunteer to train. Your experience is already good enough to keep the class (if any) glue to the floor.

When comes to paying online transactions by credit cards, most are very wary of confidential information being disseminated easily over the internet after they are done. As long as you follow a strict procedure, whether you are doing it at home, office or even at public terminal, you must always remember to clear the cache, cookies, temporary internet files, historical records and last of all, empty the recyle bin even if the dump are not yours.

Nothing to sell? Perhaps you may not have thought of it. Buy in something you specialise in and which you think will make some money. Dont bother whether you make more or less. Just buy and resell it. It could be books, audio cd, etc.

  11. Hi Yew Kwong,
I used to buy accessories from ebay thru paypal account. I have plenty of stuff to sell but have yet to learn how to do it. But it seems that there are more learners than trainers..

  12. Hi Internet Trainers

I am interested to learn how to sell things in yahoo auctions, please include me in your training. Yew Kwong – if you do not mind teach me again. Thanks.
